Useful Information Removal of EV Grants and Charger Grants December 2021 has seen the grant scheme for zero-emission vehicles updated to target less expensive models. The government will provide grants of up to £1,500 for electric cars priced under £32,000. Grant rates for the Plug in Van Grant will now be £5,000 for large vans and £2,500 for small vans, with a limit of 1,000 per customer per year. Plug in Van Grant orders in 2021 are already over 250% higher than in 2020, demonstrating the strong shift to an electric future. The government’s approach to supporting the uptake of electric cars is clearly working – while the grant has slowly reduced over time, the sales of electric vehicles has soared. Record sales in 2021 have already exceeded those from 2019 and 2020 combined. The government is also setting out that it will introduce new rules next year that will increase confidence in our EV charging infrastructure. These rules will mandate a minimum payment method – such as contactless payment – for new 7.1 kW and above chargepoints, including rapids. Motorists will soon be able to compare costs across networks, which will be in a recognisable format similar to pence per litre for fuel and there will be new standards to ensure reliable charging for electric vehicle drivers. Generous tax incentives for EVs remain in place, including tax write down and favourable company car tax rates, which can save drivers over £2,000 a year and we expect the total cost of EV ownership to reach parity during the 2020s compared to petrol and diesel cars. The number of new cars sold in the UK rose in November for the first time in four months, fuelled by a doubling of sales of electric vehicles, as consumers increasingly look to more environmentally friendly forms of transport. Almost 22,000 pure electric vehicles were registered in November, more than double the 10,345 registered in the same month last year, as the share of total sales accounted for by batterypowered electric vehicles climbed to 19%. 10

Electric vehicle home charging scheme changes in 2022: What you need to know. The eligibility rules for grants to help pay for electric car home charger installation are changing – get in quick if you want to save money... The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) gives eligible electric vehicle (EV) owners grants of up to £350 towards the cost of having a home charger installed. Currently, all homeowners with off-street parking who are registered as the owner of an EV (including most plug-in hybrids) are eligible for the grant. However, the eligibility rules are changing from 31 March 2022. Owners of detached, semi-detached, terraced houses and bungalows will no longer be eligible from 31 March 2022. The grant will instead be aimed at landlords of rental properties, and those living in leasehold flats. The idea is to remove a key barrier to EV uptake in densely populated urban areas. Landlords will be able to make up to 200 applications for a maximum of £70,000 per year. Each property they apply for must have private parking, and there is no limit to how many chargers can be installed on a single property. We can advise on all the information you need about the scheme, including who is eligible for a grant, and how you can get money off the installation of your own home charger.

BIK information Benefit-in-kind (or BIK) is a tax on employees who receive benefits or perks on top of their salary. If you have a company car for private use, you will have to pay a BIK contribution, or company car tax. Every car has a BIK percentage banding. This is based on CO2 emissions, and a P11D value, which is the list price, including extras and VAT, but without the first year registration fee and vehicle tax. To calculate the company car - or BIK - tax, multiply the P11D value by the BIK percentage banding, then multiply that figure by your tax band - i.e. 20% or 40%. With circa 50% of new cars obtained by companies, and because BIK makes a significant difference to an individual’s monthly wages, BIK represents a very potent lever available to the government to encourage adoption of the lowest emitting vehicles.

Vehicle benefit tax

The HM Treasury is strongly incentivising full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) using these tax rates, and offers a more modest incentive on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). With all BEV drivers paying just 1% in 2021-22 and the tax rate frozen at 2% until at least 2025, a further increased uptake of fully electric company cars is to be expected. If your company provides you with a zero emission van for personal use, that van is subject to a van benefit charge. This is currently set at £3,500 for the 2021-22 financial year. While electric vans used to receive a reduction on the van benefit charge, you’ll now need to pay 100% of the van benefit charge. However, the cash equivalent of the van benefit charge was reduced to £0. Below is a company car tax calculation on the KIA EV6 77.4 kWh GT-Line 239kW AWD Auto.

EV FAQs

As the general public has become more aware of the environment, they are now starting to look for ways to help reduce pollution. Along with the Government pushing the issue and the general awareness of the booming electric vehicle industry, which is only going to get bigger. This means more and more people are interested in using electric cars or vans on a day to day basis. But there are a lot of questions that people need answering about making the move to electric. Here at Wessex Garages we have you covered, we thought it was only right, as one of the biggest stockists of electric vehicles in Wales and the South West, to help answer anything and everything regarding electric vehicles.

If you opt for electric driving, you’ll have three main choices:

FLEET BUSINESS CENTRE MAGAZINE

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR? This all depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. Charging can take anywhere between 30-minutes and 12-hours. A typical electric car with a 60kWh battery would take 8-hours to fully charge the car’s battery from empty to full when using a 7kWh charging point. The majority of electric car drivers never charge their battery from empty. They normally top up the battery’s power regularly which would speed up the charging process. This would mean hooking up the battery through the day when parked at work or a shopping centre, or charging your car overnight. The majority of electric cars can be charged within 35-minutes with a 50kWh charging point, to provide a range of up to 100-miles. As you can see, the bigger the battery and the slower the charging point is that you are using, the longer it will take to charge your car’s battery. ELECTRIC CHARGING AT HOME? You can buy a home charging point as this offers the best solution to charging your electric vehicle at home. It offers a faster and safer solution to charging your battery and offers the flexibility of charging your car’s battery overnight. You can use a standard 3-pin plug with an EVSE cable (electric vehicle supply equipment) to charge your car but this is not recommended as a permanent solution, this should be only used when no other option is available. Electric car charging points installation We would advise you to always enlist a professional to install your home charging point. The reason we give this advice is that to install a level-2 charging point that uses 240 volts, you need the correct circuit breaker installed on your home’s circuit board. You will then need to run a newly installed 4-strand cable to your chosen charging location to connect to your charging pod. If you don’t understand any of what we’ve said here, please have a professional to install your charging point at home. ARE ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS FREE? There are many free EV charging points available around the UK. To find where these free charging points are you need to take a look at Zap-Map Live (available as an app or as a desktop version). Make sure to ‘filter’ your results by ‘Payment’ and apply the ‘£ Free to Use’ filter. This will give you a map of the UK full of free EV charging points in the UK. It is worth noting that the majority of fast and rapid chargers will require payment.

HOW MUCH TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR? There is no one answer that covers this question. It all depends on whether you charge your EV at home, work or use a public charging station. We will base our answer on a typical electric car that uses a 60kWh battery, with a range of 200-miles. For the electricity rate, we will use a UK average of 14p per kWh charge to show you what your EV car could cost to charge. Home Charging: Full charge at home costs £8.40. Work Charging: Full charge can be obtained for free, as many employers will install a workplace charging point. Rapid Charging Point: Normally you wouldn’t use a rapid charging point to charge your battery to full. EV drivers would normally use these charging points on the motorway at the service stations. This is where you’ll place your EV on charge and go grab a coffee or some lunch. An average cost would be £6.50 for 30-minutes that will provide your battery with a 100-mile range. BENEFITS OF ELECTRIC CARS? When comparing EVs against your standard combustion engines (petrol and diesel) there are several benefits. • You are helping the environment by reducing your Co2 contributions. • Electric cars are faster on acceleration, Tesla has proven this with their Ludicrous mode. • Cheaper to run as it’s cheaper to charge a battery than it is to fill up at the pump. Plus servicing is cheaper as EV cars have fewer moving parts. • No more visiting fuel stations. Just charge your battery when you’re not using your vehicle at your convenience. Electric cars will soon be the same price as buying a combustion engine car, as the government pushes to reduce emissions. HOW LONG DO ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES LAST? When buying a new electric car you are more than likely going to receive a battery warranty with your car package. These are normally for 8-years or up to 100,000-miles, whichever comes first. Currently, there are no actual facts to prove the length of a battery’s life span as the technology is so new. We have seen a few high mileage electric cars that haven’t really suffered even a small amount of degradation. 13

News

We’ve been busy! Gloucester now a business centre/refit

Testimonial from one of our customers

The Gloucester site was approved for a £2m refit in 2021 and work is now underway. The new site will be the first Wessex Garages site to showcase the new KIA branding.

North Somerset Council carried out an ICE Fleet Replacement Programme in 2020 to implement our Green Agenda going forward.

Being a new business centre, Lee Bowtell, the new Local Fleet Sales Manager will be on hand to help with all your business fleet needs. He will be available for demos/test drives on all available vehicles, including the stunning EV6, the new e-Niro and Sportage that are being released later this year, as well as any other vehicle of interest.

Above; 3d modelling of Kia’s new store branded interior vision.

The vehicle requirements for our Highways Area Officers was such that the Kia e-Niro fitted the bill exactly with the majority of other available EVs being out of budget with specifications that were unable to match our needs. A total of 11 Kia e-Niros were delivered to our team in early 2021, they were all then marked up for Chapter 8 with an extensive lighting system, ensuring they were unmissable by drivers and the general public when out on the highway, as our 24 hour first point of contact/first responders for carrying out emergency duties, such as severe weather issues, fallen trees, floods, vandalism and anything that might occur. There was an initial reluctance within the Area Officer team to replace their existing diesel cars, with the majority of our staff having no knowledge whatsoever of what an EV car would be like to live with. These vehicles have now proven to be invaluable and highly popular with our team and are considered to be an incredibly reliable asset for them, with an easy manageable range. Some Area Officers personally installed home chargers for their vehicles, we have already installed a new rapid charging station at Portishead Marina to accommodate the increased need of the public and our own officers use, with plans to install more 22kW and 50kW chargers in Weston-super-Mare and Cleeve in the forthcoming months.

Left; one of North Somerset Council’s configured Kia e-Niros, ready for the road. 15
