The holidays are a time for indulging in the treats and traditions we hold dear -but this year, my family and I are giving our celebrations a little makeover. A slightly healthier makeover. Don’t worry, we’re not canceling cookies! Instead, we’re mixing in some lower-sugar, higher protein, whole-food options alongside our nostalgic favorites.
Our goal? To create new, wholesome traditions we’ll look forward to just as much as the old ones. And guess what? It seems we’re not alone.
Nearly everyone I’ve shared this idea with has said their family is craving the same change. Whether it’s to support loved ones managing diabetes or prediabetes, heart health, food allergies and sensitivities, chronic inflammation, or simply to prioritize healthier habits, it’s a delicious way to give ourselves the gift of wellness this season.
For those looking to offer thoughtful, healthconscious gifts this holiday season, these recipes are a perfect choice. They’re easy to make, budget-friendly, and packed with flavor -- proof that healthier choices can still feel indulgent!
DARK CHOCOLATE
BARK
Melt unsweetened dark chocolate and spread it out on parchment paper. Top with nuts and a sprinkle of sea salt. Once set, break it into pieces and package it in a decorative
box or jar. Dark chocolate is lower in sugar, and the nuts and seeds provide healthy fats and fiber, making this treat both indulgent and nutritious.
PEANUT BUTTER STUFFED DATES
Yield: 1 dozen
Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
12 Medjool dates, pitted 1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 roasted peanuts, chopped 2 tablespoons dark chocolate, chopped
Slice dates lengthwise and remove pits. Fill each date with 1 teaspoon peanut butter. Sprinkle the sticky peanut butter with chopped peanuts and dark chocolate. Chill before serving.
MAPLE TOASTED COCONUT CASHEWS
Yield: about 3 cups or 12
servings
Total Time: 30 minutes
3 cups roasted, unsalted cashews
1/2 cup shredded coconut flakes, unsweetened
1/4 teaspoon salt (optional) 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted 3 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons demerara sugar
Preheat oven to 300 F and line a baking sheet with parchment. In a mixing bowl, mix cashews, coconut and salt. Melt the coconut oil with the maple syrup. Stir in maple syrup mixture to coat cashew mixture. Add sugar and stir once more. Spread the mixture on the baking sheet in a single layer with gaps for airflow. Bake 15 minutes, flip and bake another 10 minutes until golden. Cool for 30 minutes before storing.
NO-BAKE CASHEW COCONUT BITES
Yield: 32 pieces
Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
1/2 cup medjool dates,
chopped, tightly packed 1 cup roasted, unsalted cashews
1 cup shredded coconut flakes, unsweetened 1/2 cup oats 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons chia seeds 1/2 tablespoon pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Blitz dates and cashews in a food processor until chopped. Add coconut, oats and cinnamon and pulse. Add in chia seeds, maple syrup, coconut oil and vanilla and pulse until combined. Press into a parchment lined loaf pan and refrigerate until firm. Slice into squares.
The holidays are meant to be joyful, not stressful, and that includes caring for your health and your budget. By incorporating thoughtful, healthier homemade treats into your celebrations, you’re giving yourself and your loved ones a gift that lasts far beyond the season. Remember, it’s not about perfection but balance -and creating traditions that nourish your body, your wallet and your spirit. Wishing you a season that’s merry, mindful and filled with love! Cheers!

A partridge in a pear tree: Inspiring pear glass figurines
According to some traditions and a certain famous song, Christmas lasts for 12 days. And, at least in the song, with each day comes extravagant gifts; the first of which is repeated every verse: a partridge in a pear tree.
It’s clearly the inspiration for this glass pear figurine with a tiny 18k gold partridge perching in a tree inside, which sold for $2,520, passing its high estimate, at Rago Arts & Auction Center. The figure was made for Steuben Glass Works of Corning, New York.
While their early iridescent and colored glass is sought by collectors, they were making mostly colorless crystal by the 1930s. Designer Lloyd Atkins joined the staff in 1948. He is known for his figurines, often animals; like this pear and partridge, which was first made in 1968. Steuben, now owned by the Corning Museum of Glass, still makes and sells pieces based on designs by Atkins, as well as some holiday-themed figures, but this is not one of them.

Q: Is it true that former “Bachelorette” Jenn Tran is dating her partner from “Dancing with the Stars”? I hope so; they were so cute together. -- K.S.
A: While Jenn Tran and dance pro Sasha Farber haven’t confirmed that they’re a couple, it certainly appears so. If anything, they’re great friends who recently attended the premiere of the movie “Wicked” together, as well as a Taylor Swift concert in Vancouver, Canada. They both deserve some happiness. lamps. They are figurines minted on bases which were made to match. They are at least 70 years old. Can you tell who might have made them?
A: Unfortunately, we would need to see a mark to identify the maker. It is difficult to tell from a picture, but the figurines on your lamp base look like they are made of painted metal, probably spelter. Spelter is a zinc alloy that has been used in decorative arts since the 1860s. It can resemble bronze, but is softer and scratches more easily. It was often used for smaller, inexpensive replicas of bronze sculptures. Not many makers are known. Lamps with human figures on the bases were popular as late as the 1950s, which fits with your estimate of “at least 70 years old.” Lamp bases with similar human figures have sold for about $100 to $150. * * *

HOLLYWOOD -- When I was 17, I met an 18-yearold girl named Liza at the Hotel St. Moritz on Central Park, and we walked several times from there to Broadway’s Great White Way. She told me how she dreamed of doing a Broadway play someday. Imagine my surprise when, two years later, I saw a marquee that read “Flora the Red Menace” starring Liza Minnelli! I didn’t realize I’d been walking with Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli’s daughter. Now everyone can see how this incredible talent became a superstar in the new documentary “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story.” The documentary takes us through her 50-year career and features interviews with her sister Lorna Luft (daughter of Sidney Luft, who produced Garland’s comeback film “A Star Is Born” in 1954), the late Chita Rivera, Michael Feinstein, Darren Criss and Ben Vereen. It also includes footage from her 1978 European

A: Denis Leary’s best known work “Rescue Me,” which he co-created with Peter Tolan and starred in as troubled 9/11 first responder Tommy Gavin, ended in 2011. Since this time, he’s kept busy with many other projects both in front of and behind the camera -- and also behind the mic voicing Diego the saber-tooth tiger in the animated “Ice Age” movies.
His next series on FX was “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” in which he played an aging rock singer who recruits his

Leary started his career as a stand-up comedian before landing his breakout role in the comedy film “The Ref” in 1994. He’s returning to his comedic roots early next year in a new comedy series on Fox, opposite Catherine Tate (“The Office”) and Danny Pudi (“Community”). It sounds like he’s perfectly cast as

“Happy Days” are here again! Seventy-five-yearold Anson Williams, who was formally Potsy on “Happy Days” and directed 31 episodes of the ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” is joining forces with 51-year-old Brian Austin Green (who played David Silver on “Beverly Hills, 90210”).
They will star in the horror-thriller film “The Three Killer Pigs,” which follows a local farmer who puts a blood oath in place when the killer pigs return. Williams and Green serve as the producers as well.

Representatives and staff from 15 community serving agencies participated in the Home for the Holidays Bed giveaway at Slumberland on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
This year, Paul and his team at Slumberland helped facilitate the 130 full and twin size beds that were given to youth and adults in our Willmar community.
Paul stated the 121 Slumberland stores that participate give away an average of 21 beds per store. The Willmar store has continued to exceed this number year after year, participating in the program for the past 28 years.
Shelly Bormann from Goodwill Easter Seals MN coordinates with the 15 agencies to work with their clients who are in need of a bed.
The agencies gathered together at 8:00 am on the morning of December 11th to kick off the day of bed delivering.
This year, as has been for more than 28 years, 130 people in the Willmar community will be sleeping in a bed of their own, many for the first time.
STAFF REPRESENTED THE FOLLOWING: UCAP; PACT 4; Project Turnabout; LSS Youth; Woodland Centers; Salvation Army; Safe Avenues; Area Learning Center; Community Basics; Adult Basic Education; Willmar Senior High; Family Promise; Kandiyohi County Public Health; Jefferson/Kennedy Elementary and Goodwill Easter Seals MN. for the to our Willmar community!
