An eggnog event: Crafting holiday cheer
BY PATTI DIAMOND
Some things have a very specific window of opportunity.
Eggnog is one of those things. It’s also controversial, right up there with fruitcake. You either love eggnog or you hate it. I get it. Eggnog has been a holiday staple in my family forever, and I have a recipe we love. I figured if I were ever to write about eggnog, this is the week!
Eggnog is the quintessential sip of the season — a rich, creamy toast to holiday traditions that brings joy to gatherings and quiet nights by the fire. But did you know that making homemade eggnog is more delicious, and less expensive than store-bought versions? Plus, you can tailor it to your taste.
Let’s shake off the notion that eggnog is complicated. At its core, eggnog is simply a blend of eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and a touch of warm spices • ingredients many of us already have in our kitchens. Why homemade is better
• Taste: Store-bought eggnog often tastes overly sweet and artificial. Homemade eggnog has a velvety texture and a perfectly balanced flavor.
• Customization: You control the sweetness, the spices and whether to make it boozy or family-friendly.
• Cost: Homemade eggnog costs a fraction of prepackaged cartons, especially when made in larger batches for parties.
Here’s another reason you should be making eggnog yourself. Just look at the list of ingredients on commercially made eggnog. That creamy texture of store-bought eggnog often comes from artificial flavors, thickeners like gums and carrageenan,
and sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup. Choosing homemade eggnog lets you control the ingredients, avoiding unnecessary additives.
Let’s agree that eggnog is not a healthy food. It’s a celebratory sip to be enjoyed once a year.
THE BEST
EGGNOG EVER
Yield: 4 cups or 8 servings
Total Time: 2 hours 15 mins
2 cups milk
1 cup whipping cream
A pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus more for topping
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon cloves
6 egg yolks
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup alcohol, optional, see the note
Heat the milk and cream with the salt and spices in a saucepan over medium heat until it’s quite warm but not boiling. Remove from heat.
Meanwhile, whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a mixing bowl until smooth, light and creamy.
Temper the eggs: Slowly whisk the warm milk into the egg mixture, one spoonful at a time. Do this gradually to avoid making scrambled eggs. Once most of the milk is successfully added to the eggs you can gradually add the egg mixture back to the saucepan. Cook the mixture: Heat this gently, stirring
constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. For food safety, reach a temperature of 160 F — do not let it boil!
Chill: Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. For an adult version, add your spirit of choice. Refrigerate until fully chilled, at least 2 hours. Serve in festive glasses, topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
The note - If you’d like to add alcohol to your eggnog, begin with 1/2 cup of brandy, bourbon, rum or whiskey, adding it either with the vanilla or after the eggnog has cooled. Adjust the amount to taste, as desired.
Homemade eggnog isn’t just a drink — it’s an event. It’s about taking time to create something delicious with love, which is what the holidays are all about. So, why not stir up a batch and toast to a fabulous Christmas and New Year. Cheers!
½ cups of water, the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and butter; bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the butter is melted. Whisk in the cocoa powder. Pour the hot mixture over the chopped chocolate, and let stand for 2 minutes. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is combined. Whisk in the sour cream, eggs, egg yolk, and vanilla. (The mixture will not be smooth.) In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture, whisking just until combined. Spray a 10- or 12-cup Bundt pan with baking spray with flour. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until a wooden pick comes out with a few moist crumbs, 45 to 50 minutes. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes in the pan before carefully flipping the cake out onto a wire cooling rack; let cool completely. For the glaze: Place the chocolate in a medium microwave-safe bowl. In a glass measuring cup, microwave the cream until steaming, 1 to 2 minutes (do not boil). Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is well-combined. If there are still chunks of chocolate, microwave the mixture at 50% power in 15-second intervals until it is completely smooth. Place the cooled cake on a serving platter. Spoon or pour the glaze on top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Decorate with sprinkles, if you like. Allow the cake to set for about 20 minutes before slicing and serving.

Q: I finally subscribed to Paramount+ and started watching the newer episodes of “Criminal Minds.” I’m happy that most of the cast is back, but what about Matthew Gray Gubler? -- D.E.
A: “Criminal Minds” ran on CBS for 15 seasons and ended in 2020, before it was rebooted as “Criminal Minds: Evolution” two years later on Paramount+. Much of the original cast returned, including Joe Mantegna, Paget Brewster, A.J. Cook, and Kirsten Vangsness. However, one person who was noticeably absent was Matthew Gray Gubler, a fan favorite as super-intellectual agent Spencer Reid.
Showrunner Erica Messer explained to Parade magazine that there’s always room for Gubler. Since the seasons are shorter with fewer episodes, the window of opportunity to land another busy actor is much smaller with streaming than with network television. Gubler was busy for a few years filming the show “Dollface” as well as writing children’s books. (He’s authored two New York Times bestsellers: “Rumple Buttercup” and “The Little Kid with the Big Green Hand.”)
Fortunately, since the interview with Messer, the show has been able to secure Gubler for one upcoming episode of “Evolution.” Season three
of the series recently wrapped filming, but it won’t premiere on Paramount+ until sometime in 2025. It appears the only thing standing in the way of Gubler joining the cast full-time is his starring role in a series that is currently being developed at CBS called “Einstein.” If it gets picked up, this will certainly limit his availability once again for “Evolution.”
Q: Is it true that there will be a “Yellowstone” spin-off with Rip and Beth continuing their story? I hope so. -- M.E.
A: Without spoiling the ending of the series finale of “Yellowstone,” I can say there’s a strong indication that the show will continue, likely in the form of a spin-off, with the love story of Rip and Beth. According to Deadline.com, both Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, who portray the respective characters, have reportedly signed deals to reprise their roles in a new spin-off that will contain the name “Yellowstone” in some capacity in the title.
Rebranding the show with a spin-off instead of just continuing season six allows Paramount to air episodes on its own streaming service, Paramount+. The current “Yellowstone” series has an exclusive deal with NBCUniversal and can only stream on the competing streamer Peacock. The spin-off will likely be a huge hit and money-
maker for Paramount.
Q: Is it true that Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle have called off their engagement? Will she return to Fox News?
-- F.T.
A: Yes, the couple have split after Trump Jr. was spotted with another flame, a socialite from Florida named Bettina Anderson. Prior to their relationship, Gilfoyle was a host on the afternoon Fox News talk show “The Five” but left after she was accused of sexual
harassment by an assistant.
It’s doubtful that she would be able to return to Fox. In fact, she’s recently been nominated to serve as a United States Ambassador to Greece by incoming president Donald Trump.
