Westchester High alumni aim to rename gym for beloved basketball coach
By Courtenay Edelhart
Westchester High School coaching legend Ed Azzam doesn’t miss being head coach of a varsity basketball team. Not one bit.
“I wanted to be an assistant coach. I was trying to get out of head coaching my last 10 years, but [Assistant Coach DeWitt Cotton] wouldn’t have it,” he said.
Azzam, 68, retired from coaching the boys’ varsity team at Westchester after 42 storied years comprising 933 wins and 285 losses. That made him one of only a handful of high school coaches in California history with more than 900 career wins.
Westchester Comets who have gone on to play for the NBA include Hassan Adams, Trevor Ariza, Bobby Brown, Amir Johnson, Gabe Pruitt and Sam Williams. He also mentored and trained Trisha Stafford-Odom, a former WNBA player who now coaches at North Carolina Central University.
In 2017, Azzam was inducted into the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) City Section sports Hall of Fame. His Comets were Los Angeles City 4-A Champions a whopping 15 times and were Division 1 state champions six times. With a record like that, there will be no slipping off to a quiet
retirement. The school wants to name its gym after him, and alumni held an event on November 12 at the Playa Vista CenterPointe Club, which raised $15,000 toward their $30,000 goal. The money will go toward replacing signage and installing new display cases in the gym’s foyer, among other things. More than 125 people were in attendance to honor the coach, including numerous former players, friends, family and community members.
Tamryn Wilkins is part of the Gym Renaming Committee.
“He’s a classy, professional guy with just amazing basketball acumen,” she said. “He’s a genius mastermind who’s been so successful, but he’s also humble. He wants the focus to be on the kids, not just on him.”
Wilkins played for Westchester’s girls’ team in the 1980s and was one of several female basketball players Azzam took under his wing. Their head coach was a good guy who did the best he could, Wilkins said, but when Azzam identified girls with D1 potential, he offered to beef up their skills so they could earn scholarships.
“He didn’t allow us to have any excuses. We ran all the same drills as the boys,” said Tiffany Baskin, who went on to play for Fresno State University and for professional teams
overseas.
Although he is often lauded for preparing so many players for the pros, Azzam said he is “just as proud of those kids who didn’t make it to the NBA, who have normal jobs whether it’s a teaching job or at a store or in a factory.”
“Our legacy is not the banners on the walls and the wins and losses and all that stuff,” said Azzam. “Our legacy is our kids who are leading a normal life raising their kids the right way. You don’t see them on TV, but they’re our true measure of success.”
If the team’s overall GPA exceeded certain benchmarks, he rewarded players with such prizes as dinner at a restaurant on him.
While it was a lot to leave, he is at peace no longer being at the helm of a varsity team. Not that he’s left the game entirely.
“I’ve latched onto a program near my house,” he said of his part-time gig assisting at North Torrance High School.
He doesn’t need to be in charge, he insisted, something he discovered during the COVID lockdown.
The 2020 season was canceled, and Azzam missed coaching, but not as much as he thought he would. He took advantage of his free time to take up new hobbies such as woodworking. Azzam still builds homemade ukuleles to this day, mostly gifts for friends and family because he says the quality isn’t high enough to sell to strangers.
Azzam did double duty as both a coach and a math teacher at Westchester, and always made academics a priority, he said, because he wanted his players to be college and career ready. Although the minimum grade point average to be eligible for sports was a 2.0, Azzam told players they had to earn a 2.5 or higher to start.
Azzam returned to Westchester for one more season after what he calls “the lost year” of quarantine, but even then he knew in his heart that it was time to go. He has two young grandchildren in Northern California and a third on the way locally, and he and his wife are looking forward to babysitting.

5 QUESTIONS WITH... ROBIN ZACHA
Janie guthrie skjervem
Janie Guthrie Skjervem has traveled the world and lived in some faraway locations, but for this proud Playa del Rey resident, there’s no place like home.
Janie has lived in Playa del Rey since 2007 after spending years in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, while supporting her husband as he worked overseeing construction for the countries’ airports.
Originally from Washington, D.C., Janie also had a career in the same industry for 20-plus years at Reagan National Airport as part of the management team before retiring.
When her husband took a role with LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal project, the two moved to Marina del Rey and began looking for a neighborhood where they could put down roots. When their real estate agent took them on a tour of PdR, they found a house that they instantly fell in love with.
Wanting to make some new friends and acquaintances, Janie signed up for a yoga class held in a neighbor’s home. She enjoyed the class, and the camaraderie, and quickly volunteered to host the classes in her own house, complete with an after-workout social
hour. The class would lead to meeting some wonderful friends, including numerous women that were involved with the Westchester Mental Health Guild (WMHG), who encouraged Janie to get involved with the nonprofit. That first year, she signed up to be a stop on the Holiday Home Tour, and now she proudly serves as the President of the WMHG, and as a board member of Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS).
“Mental health is such a great cause to support. A lot of people can’t afford services, so it’s so important that we raise money for AMCS,” said Janie. “There are so many hard-working people there. It’s really amazing to see all the therapists that apply to work at the clinic to help.”
This month, Janie is excited about the Guild’s Annual Holiday Lights Tour & Contest, a fundraiser that supports AMCS. The community is invited to buy tickets to the event (held December 10-26) to receive a map of Westchester/ Playa’s most wonderfully decorated homes, and have the chance to vote for their favorite dazzling display.
We recently sat down with Janie and asked her to share her thoughts, so here is “5 Questions With...Janie!”
If you’re looking for the perfect evening out, where are you going?
My husband and I are ordering an Uber and going to dinner at Caffe Pinguini in Playa del Rey. You feel welcomed by the owner Toni and his wife Mary, and the waitstaff as soon as you enter the restaurant. We love to sit outside with a bottle or two of wine while enjoying a delicious meal. It is amazing how we always seem to have room for their sea salt caramel gelato!
What’s one local spot you couldn’t live without?
That is Tower Pizza in Westchester; however, my husband would laughingly say Playa Pharmacy to pick up his prescriptions and get his shots. Tower Pizza is a family-owned establishment and community supporter that was a life-saver during the pandemic. They maintained their food delivery, and we were regular customers. We still call on them frequently for delivery when we realize it is time for dinner and nothing is cooking in the kitchen. They always try to fulfill your entrée selection, even if it’s off menu!
What do you tell people that are new to the area about Westchester/Playa?
I’d say, “Welcome to the neighborhood, you chose a great place to reside!” The year-round ability to head out your front door to take a walk on the nearby hiking trails and the beach is amazing. Additionally, we are fortunate to have the Ballona Wetlands in our backyard to discover the many different species of wildlife that visit and live there. I’d also share that this is a village that helps their neighbors when in need.
What’s a local organization you’d like to give a shout-out to?
I’d like to give a shout out to Airport Marina Counseling Service and its sister organization, the Westchester Mental Health Guild.
AMCS is a nonprofit clinic in Westchester that provides affordable mental health counseling to the community and trains the next generation of therapists. During these times, they are needed more than ever. The Guild is celebrating 60 years of service this year and continues to be a nonprofit organization whose sole purpose, through its work and fundraising, is to advocate and support AMCS.
Some of our “FUNdraisers” have included wine tastings, flower and cooking demonstrations, takeout dinner events, a spring tea party, style hacks and wine, and of course our upcoming Third Annual Holiday Lights Tour & Contest. We are always looking for members and new ideas for fundraisers. If anyone has an interest in joining us or ideas, please feel free to reach out to me at info@westchestermhg.org.
What is your favorite tip or trick?
A great tip is you can safely dispose of your household hazardous and electronic waste at the neighborhood Hyperion Plant S.A.F.E. Center on Saturdays and Sundays. This is so convenient; you don’t even have to get out of your car and it’s way better than items ending up in a landfill.

Holiday traditions capture our community spirit
By Cozette Vergari
Happy Holidays!
The Westchester/Playa Historical Society (WPHS) is celebrating an amazing year of programming at the Discovery Center, and its first successful series of Holiday Candle Making workshops! These five workshops, which doubled as a fundraiser, are helping resurrect a 70-year-old community tradition, which was started in the 1950s by Dick Birch on Chase Avenue, and drew busloads of “tourists” to see the holiday wonderland of giant red candles.
This holiday happening drew the attention of local Spectrum News 1, which was on site for the final work day in late November to get footage as part of their December coverage. Make sure to follow us on facebook. com/WestchesterPlayaHistory, where we’ll post the link to the story once it’s ready to air. You’ll also be able to view the story on spectrumnews1.com/ca/la-west and wphistoricalsociety.org/candlemaking-workshop.
Thank you to the creative community members who participated in this first fundraiser and are now the owners of the next generation of Westchester/Playa candles that will bring some nostalgia and holiday magic to neighborhood streets.
Once the decorating season is in full swing, you will be able to see the red and blue candles at the following locations:
In Westchester:
• 6716 W. 87th Street
• 6433 W. 82nd Street
• 6610 W. 81st Street
• 7526 Kentwood Avenue
• 7536 Ogelsby Avenue
• 5912 W. 78th Street
• 8001 Denrock Avenue
• 7800 Stewart Avenue
• 6963 W. 85th Place
• 8031 Nardian Way
• 8035 Nardian Way
In Playa del Rey:
• 7738 W. 80th Street
You may also be able to see a candle or two on the map for the Westchester Mental Health Guild’s
Holiday Lights Tour & Contest. You can learn more about this fundraiser for mental health at Westchestermhg. org.
If you missed the opportunity to make a candle this year, you still have one more chance! The WPHS is holding a raffle where one lucky winner will win one of these special decorations.
If you’d like to buy a $20 raffle ticket, please email
cozetterotary5280@gmail.com for more information by Sunday, December 4. The winner will be chosen December 5 and will receive a fully assembled candle and lighting kit, painted blue or red. The candle will be ready in time for pickup to display at your home this month.
The Westchester/Playa Historical Society will offer this workshop again in 2023, and there is already a waiting list! Add your name to the list by emailing cozetterotary5280@gmail. com.
The WPHS Discovery Center is currently closed for renovations and will reopen in the new year. Starting in January, the center will once again be opened on Sundays during the Westchester Farmers’ Market and by appointment. We also offer small group tours and are available for special events. The Discovery Center is located at 6207 W. 87th St. in Westchester.
I wish to acknowledge and thank the Westchester/Playa Historical Society board members and donors who make our existence possible. We are so thankful to our donors and have acknowledged each of them on our website. Please visit wphistoricalsociety.org/support to view the list and join our efforts! Donations are tax-deductible.

Get Involved in Creating A New Community Plan
WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY PLAN?
It’s the zoning that identifies permitted uses of land in a community. The Community Plan results in zoning maps and zoning code specifications. It also identifies specific land uses and development standards within the Westchester-Playa del Rey area. This is the document that informs developers and residents about what types of uses are permitted and governs the way in which these uses can be developed. Other goals of the Community Plan include identifying and providing for economic opportunities; maintaining significant environmental resources; seeking to enhance the community’s identity; and recognizing the unique character of neighborhoods.
Our Community Plan is 18-years-old and in the process of being updated. Right now, there is an opportunity to for everyone to participate in planning the future of our community.
HOW IS IT CREATED?
The Community Plan is developed collaboratively by the Los Angeles Planning Department with stakeholder input (community meetings, input from Neighborhood Council’s CPU Ad Hoc Committee, direct stakeholder communication with Planning)
WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE COMMUNITY PLAN UPDATE FOR WESTCHESTER/PLAYA?
In July of 2020, the City Planning Department released Draft 1.0 of the Community Plan Update and held information sessions to inform stakeholders.
In 2021, the City Planning Department solicited stakeholder feedback and compiled a summary of feedback regarding Draft 1 of the Community Plan.
Today, the City Planning Department is working on Draft 2.0 the Community Plan update.
Note: All of the Westside Community Plan updates are being updated as a group.
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?
In the second half of 2023, the City Planning Department aims to release Draft 2.0
Once that draft is released for public input, community stakeholders will be able to provide input. Once that input is received, the EIR process will begin.
The EIR process will continue through 2024 and 2025 as ther environmental analysis is conducted, released and ammended based on community feedback.
In 2025 or 2026, the Westchester-Playa Community Plan will go before the full City Council to be discussed and voted upon. The Plan will not be finalized until the City Council votes to approve and implement it.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
Visit our website www.ncwpdr.org, and sign up for email notifications to be informed of upcoming Community Plan Update Committee meetings. These meetings are held on the fourth Monday of every month and offer the opportunity to provide feedback and monitor the process. The NCWP is also planning on having a “resource center” on its website where people can go to find out more about the Community Plan Update and how to participate.

Meet Runways Newest Attraction, RVIVL!
RVIVL was conceptualized to offer cutting edge, fitness recovery tools in the most convenient and accessible way. Founders, Dr. Adam Sands and Ken Silver met several years ago when Ken suffered from a sports injury that landed him at Dr. Sands chiropractic office. As their doctor/patient relationship evolved, they realized they had a shared passion for educating themselves on natural methods of healing, as well as discovering ways to be proactive and reactive in regards to injuries and restorative techniques. This motivated them to get to work, researching and curating the most effective treatments on the market for their fitness recovery brand.
We’ve officially opened our doors and we’re so excited to offer the following services at The Runway Playa Vista— infrared saunas, ice baths/cold plunge, red light therapy, vitamin iv injections, and compression boots!
If you’re searching for a fun and reviving winter activity, we will be introducing our ‘Dip at Dusk’ starting Thursday, December 1st at 7-8PM. For this event, we invite our current members to bring a guest - free of charge - for an hour of ice baths with the RVIVL community.
We look forward to building a strong and healthy community here! For more information regarding our services and membership options, please visit RVIVL.CO

Focus on positive changes from exercise
By Jeff Blair
Opinion: I have a clear childhood memory of looking down at my arm, straightening it and wondering where the heck my muscles were. It seemed like all the athletes on television had muscles, so why didn’t I? I was just a 10-year-old kid and I was comparing myself to adult professional athletes, but I remember being discouraged and thinking I could never be like the people I saw on TV. It is funny to recall but today I see similarities with that memory and some of the fitness industry today.
Much fitness information can be downright misleading or discouraging. The images shown on fitness sites are often of fitness professionals, models or professional athletes. Many of us probably expect those images, but if we compare ourselves to these people, we might feel that we come up short. When compared to them, we might think, “I can never be like that, so why even try?” We might hesitate to start or just not start at all.
Here are some suggestions to help you change focus and develop a mindset that works for you rather than against you.
1. Realize a lot of fitness marketing
you see is borderline gaslighting. I could only laugh recently when I opened a fitness site and the headline was something about “move beyond focusing on your physical features and focus on your internal wellbeing instead.” Right next to this headline was a picture of a fitness model with a perfect physique. The words say “move beyond appearance,” but the images communicate something entirely different. Many of these sites feature 20-something models who work out many hours per day and who prep hours for photo shoots. The pictures might even be altered in various ways. Whenever I see a site like this, I always wonder how much it impacts the typical person trying to get started on a fitness routine. Some might use these physical ideals as motivation, but many might be discouraged. Some might re ject these idealized images completely.
2. Focus on how consistent exercise makes you feel. While starting an exercise program can be tough, most people seem to feel better almost immediately after starting. Many of our clients even say they feel better after just a single workout. I have probably heard that hundreds of times over the years. Many say they feel less stress and more energy on workout days.
They have more mental clarity at work. They sleep better. These good feelings often cause them to add an extra exercise day as they want more of those good feelings. This can even cause a “cascading effect” as they start to slowly make nutritional and other changes, like cutting back on alcohol. This process can produce a cycle where physical, mental and emotional health all improve. By not obsessing on our physical imperfections, it is easier to recognize progress. Rather than constantly thinking, “I really wish I could lose those 10 pounds,” focus on the wins generated from exercise. I have found many people develop this attitude naturally over time. Like many things in life, for most there are things about your physical appearance you are happy with and things you wish you could change. By focusing on the positive, you can develop an appreciation for how exercise enhances your life.
3. It is also okay to have appearance goals. Whenever I have written articles about focusing on how exercise makes you feel, I have not always mentioned that appearance goals are also fine. Exercise can help you tone certain parts of your body, add muscle or lose a few pounds. While focusing only on
appearance can sometimes be counter productive, it is also great if you have goals in that area. We all know losing weight can be challenging, frustrating and takes a lot of effort. If you are not in the place where you can make that commitment due to work or family obligations or simply choose not to do so, focus on exercise’s other benefits. Maybe at another time you can return to appearance goals. It is completely your choice. Whether you do or not, consistent exercise can dramatically improve your quality of life.

Opinion: It is the time of year when we are likely to hear Christmas carols such as “Joy to the World.” However, this well-known Christmas carol is not the only song with this title. There are others, such as a 1970s pop song sung by Three Dog Night. With the fast pace of the holidays, the focus on decorating, finding the perfect gift for those around us, travel plans to join family or friends, rounds of parties, special holiday food preparations, all on top of normal, everyday lives–is there time to find joy during the holidays? Joy is something sung about, wished for and dreamed about. You and I may know it is important, but it may easily feel like a mirage that is seen but can never be quite reached. In today’s world, to experience joy requires being intentional. Otherwise, it is lost in the hustle and bustle of life. It requires allowing a lightness to form at the center of your being. How do you become light when the stress of living feels heavy? It requires being able to laugh, being true to your own values, setting aside time for you to take care of yourself and your environment and being brutally honest about what keeps you from being your authentic self. It also requires nurturing the quality of your significant relationships with others; yes, there are times when we engage in activities because it makes loved ones happy. Whew! It may appear as if there is not enough time in a day to build within you the possibility of joy, while at the same time trying to earn a living and participate in “expected of you” activities. However, with effort you can increase the amount of joy you experience.
Let’s start with smiling. The pop rock Three Dog Night version of “Joy to The World,” is upbeat and snappy, beginning with, “Jeremiah was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine, I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him a-drink his wine.”
Let your imagination roam. Do you smile when you think about being good friends with a bullfrog? The characters in the song obviously communicated, even if they didn’t always understand each other. The chorus of the song is “Joy to the world. All the boys and girls now. Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea. Joy to you and me.” Again, in your imagination, what do you see? Thinking about happy fish makes me smile! In fact, it makes me want to giggle. Smiling and laughter translates to a lightness of being. All that is required is to let your imagination go and allow yourself to smile.
What about being true to your values? Do you know what your
values are? You may want to do some journaling to bring them into focus.
Next, think about the last time you did something which was not in alignment with what you value in this world. How did you feel? Did it make you feel empty, or numb, or unimpressed or heavy? Now think about a time when you did something which was aligned with what you believe in. How did it make you feel? Did it make you feel content, or satisfied, or upbeat or a little bit lighter? Do you prefer being upbeat or unimpressed? One of the factors of feeling joy is an accumulation of doing things in alignment with your life values.
Another element in experiencing joy is how you take care of yourself. Joy and resiliency both require taking care of your body and the surrounding environment. Consider the amount of sleep you get, eating healthy food, not abusing substances, obtaining regular exercise, caring for your body and immediate environment, and scheduling “me” time. A lot of people struggle with some aspect of self-care. Compounding the struggle may be a sense of shame surrounding the area of neglect and/or difficulties being experienced because of the neglect. Frequently, a struggle in this area involves some emotional aspects needing to be healed.
The holiday season brings us into contact with family we may only see on special occasions. It offers opportunities to connect with special people we do not often get to see. Consider the quality of your connection with others. Are you looking forward to seeing family and friends this year? Humans need meaningful connection with other humans. If gathering with family is difficult, you may want to form a “family of friends.”
My wish is for you to make space in your life for joy during this holiday season. It is possible to intentionally create a life in which joy naturally emerges. Try starting with opening yourself to laughter. Consider finding a picture of a bullfrog and hanging it on your bathroom mirror. Every time you look at it, imagine yourself attempting to understand the words it is saying. I think each “ribet” is saying “joy.” That bullfrog is singing, “Joy to the world.
Joy to the girls and boys. Joy to the fishes. Joy to you and me.” I hope you have a joyful holiday season.

Best holiday present? The gift of wellness!
By Sheri Weitz, RDN, CDCES Contributing Columnist
Opinion: ‘Tis the season for holiday get-togethers, over-indulgence, stomach aches and headaches. We eat and drink a lot, give many gifts, and then wait until January to start a diet as part of our New Year’s Resolution. But what if feeling good during the holidays was the gift you give to yourself?
By staying mindful at gatherings, you can avoid feeling post-party doldrums and can most importantly avoid the urge to start a diet after New Year’s. Diets don’t work, and every gimmick comes with a warning label, so why not avoid the gimmicks and stick to the gifts? Research shows diets lead to extra weight gain, and for some, can even lead to an eating disorder.
Perhaps you already have a goal of starting one of these “diets” in 2023: • Keto diet in January? How long can you keep up never having bread? One
month? Two? Maybe even six? And then what happens when you go off the diet? Many people springboard into overeating carbs, and their bodies suck them up like kitchen sponges.
• Going more plant-based in January? There are easy ways to eat plant-based the whole year through, including during the holidays. The plate method is one way: try filling half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables. Avoiding meat or animal protein is easier if you get protein with your carbs. Try lentil or garbanzo bean pasta instead of regular pasta. Consider a Banza brand pasta salad for your holiday party. Another idea is bringing high protein and fiber-rich crackers made with nuts and seeds to a party, perhaps with vegan or regular cheese.
• Intermittent Fasting (IF) in 2023? This lifestyle or diet isn’t the best fit for everyone and can lead to binging for those prone to compulsive eating. But there are health benefits to IF, and if you want to give it a try, here’s one
easy way.
The adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day is becoming old news in the nutrition world. If you don’t miss breakfast, then skip it! If you avoid eating late at night, then voila–you’ll be intermittent fasting, even during the holidays. For example, an eating window of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. is a 14-hour intermittent fast. I don’t recommend skipping lunch, as this leads to overeating at dinner time.
As we head into the last few weeks of 2022, here are some mindful eating techniques to help keep you from feeling the need to diet in the new year:
• Fill your plate with low-carb veggies such as broccoli, Brussel sprouts, asparagus, dark green lettuce and cauliflower.
• Eat your veggies first.
• Chew each bite 25 times.
• Practice mindful gratitude about the food you are receiving.
• Aim for 25 grams of fiber a day,
which requires eating all the plantbased food we can get our hands on. (continued on page 24)

• Notice when you’re starting to feel satisfied, but not full. Check in with your body two-thirds of the way through your meal. Imagine your stomach is a Ziplock bag and when it’s two-thirds full, pause and see if you might actually be finished.
• Add nuts and seeds to your daily menu. They’re high in fiber, have significant amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals, keep us full, decrease inflammation and contain plant-based protein. A 1/4 cup serving of nuts or seeds goes a long way.
• Pair fruit with nuts or seeds as a great and portable snack.
• Consider donating to a hunger charity instead of being a member of the “clean plate club.”
If you can keep the overindulging to a minimum during the holidays, then perhaps you won’t have to kick off the new year with diet plans. Here’s hoping your holidays are filled with copious parties, moderate portions, gratitude and the best gift of all–wellness!

Coach Azzam (continued)
(continued from page 8)
“The only thing I really miss from Westchester are the relationships you have with the kids, but I’m getting a little of that up at North,” Azzam said.
That doesn’t surprise Ahmaad Cook who played for Azzam in high school and earned athletic scholarships to Ball State University in Indianapolis and Northwest University in the Seattle area.
For countless players, Azzam was a father figure doling out wisdom that went far beyond sports.
“Our conversations weren’t just about basketball,” Cook said. “They were more about life in general.”
Azzam said when he was teaching and coaching, he saw himself as “the extension of the parent,” recognizing that between class, practices and games, some kids spent more time with him over the course of a day than with their own families.
“We had kids we had to bring along academically and socially,” Azzam said. “If you didn’t go to class and weren’t respectful to staff and students, we didn’t want you around, and they usually didn’t stick around.”
Jason Sanders played for Azzam for three seasons before earning
scholarships to San Diego State and Azusa Pacific University. He’s a physical education teacher now, and has previously coached track and basketball, including a twoyear stint as Azzam’s assistant at Westchester.
“He’s genuine and sincere,” Sanders said. “At the same time, he’s a taskmaster–very demanding, but fair. He’s going to get the best out of you by building personal relationships.”
Azzam said players have to fear coaches a little bit for them to be truly motivated, so he could be tough and set high expectations.
“At the same time, you’re never going to get 100 percent on fear alone,” Azzam said. “I think the kids knew down deep that we cared about them, because we did. It wasn’t just about basketball. If it was only about basketball, I don’t think they would have played as hard as they did.”
The Gym Renaming Committee says that their goal is to hold additional fundraisers and host a ceremony in 2023 to dedicate the gym and unveil it to the community.

SEASON,
Looking back at 2022... Our favorite moments and stories of the year...
In January, we kicked off the year by featuring Alison White, who is known throughout the community for her beautiful home renovations. Alison also enjoys being an admin for the “Westchester Renovations Group” Facebook page.
Nearly 100 community members of all ages came out to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Fourth Annual Kids’ March for Equality on January 17. Attendees marched down Sepulveda while holding signs with positive affirmations.
Local business took the spotlight in our February issue, as the community welcomed Chad Maender as the new President/CEO of the LAX Coastal Chamber. The organization boasts nearly 600 members, and will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2023.

The Del Rey American Little League (DRALL) kicked-off its 2022 season with Opening Day Ceremonies in March. The league was almost back to its prepandemic numbers with 25 teams and close to 300 players this year.
In May, dancer and entrepreneur, Rachel Butler-Green shared her inspiring story about being a stroke survivor. The successful fitness professional is using her experience to help others get fit, find calm and have a positive mindset.
In spring, we highlighted one of Westchester’s hidden gems–Sam First, a top-notch jazz club and cocktail bar located on Century Boulevard. The club is open five-days a week, with two performances nightly.
At AMCS’ Spring into Well-Being Celebration, Val Velasco was honored for her volunteer work in the community and for her role on the LAX Board of Airport Commissioners. More than $350,000 was raised for mental health at the event.
The pandemic lockdown sparked new hobbies for many and in the case of Frank Nesta, turned his love of cars into a thriving blog. “Frank’s Cars in the Hood” features the automobiles that he finds around the neighborhood.
In July, we featured the Widmer family, who for more than a decade have been keeping the Fourth of July Parade route chill by serving up snow cones. Every parade, the family serves up $1 treats to a line of friendly faces.
Hundreds of people headed to Toes Beach to attend the 50th and final Gillis Beach Volleyball Tournament in late July. Founders Steve and Dave Cressman were recently honored by the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame for their dedication to the sport.
The weather was hot and the cheers were loud at the Second Annual Westchester Team Challenge
Westchester
In September, we featured the Westchester-based synchronized swimming club, the L.A. SeaStars. After a COVID hiatus, the group is back practicing at LMU and getting ready for competitions.

celebrated the opening of comedian Kevin Hart’s first eatery, Hart House, on August 25. Since opening, the fast food joint has been wowing customers with its 100 percent plant-based eats.
More than 7,000 community members flocked to Emerson Ave. to enjoy the festivities at the 7th Annual WAM Block Party at the end of September. The event raised more than $20,000 for the YMCA.
October, we featured Playa del Rey resident Monica Kahn and her nonprofit Helen’s Room. The organization helps brighten the spirit of women battling cancer by providing wigs and other head coverings.
