LAWA staff gives recommendation to move runway 260 feet north Could the North Runway be moving 260 feet north? At the Monday, December 3 Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) meeting, LAWA staff presented its recommended Alternatives, based on the LAX Specific Plan Amendment Study (SPAS) and the Draft SPAS Environmental Impact Report to the board. The SPAS report looked to identify possible changes to the LAX Specific Plan which called for the “modernization and improvement of LAX in a manner designed for a practical capacity of 78.9 million annual passengers, while enhancing

safety and security, minimizing environmental impacts on surrounding communities and creating conditions that encourage airlines to use other airports in the region.” The report identifies nine potential alternatives to components of the LAX Master Plan, known as “Yellow Light Projects,” and include LAX ground transportation systems, improvements to terminals and north runway configurations. When the SPAS report was released, the public had from July 27 through October 10 to review the document and make public comments. Three public meetings in August were held,

and according to LAWA more than 370 people attended and more than 2,000 individual comments were received. LAWA states the majority of these comments were focused on the selection of a particular Alternative and the importance of moving forward with the SPAS process. At these public meetings, the community largely came out in favor of Alternatives 2 and 9, which are the only proposals that do not call for moving the North Runway closer to Westchester and Playa del Rey. At the time, the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa came out in favor of both of these Alternatives.

At the BOAC meeting, however, LAWA staff made their recommendation for combining SPAS Alternative 1 and 9 as the Preferred Alternative to be considered by the board. BOAC made no decision on the staff’s recommendation at the December meeting, but will consider the issue again early next year. Alternative 1 would move the North Runway 260 feet north and construct a center taxiway between the two north airfield runways. It would also address runway safety area and taxiway/ taxi lane deficiencies, create a new Terminal Zero, redevelop (continued on page 12)

Police warn shoppers to harden the target during holiday shopping At its annual meeting, the Westchester Town Center Business Improvement District encouraged shoppers, residents and business owners to pay special attention to security during the holiday season. The meeting included pleas from several LAPD officers to take basic precautions to avoid burglary and theft from motor vehicles and provided a few simple steps to keep from becoming victims of these crimes. While overall crime is down in LAPD’s Pacific Division, Lt. David Crew told attendees gathered at the L.A. Turners building in Westchester that property crime continues to be a concern in and around the airport area. “The irony is that if folks would take a few extra seconds to properly store their belongings, this crime could be eliminated. There is no good reason to be the victim of a one of these crimes,” he said. “These crimes are our own fault sometimes. There’s no good reason to leave your iPad sitting on the seat in your car. Of course, I’ve done it myself. I’ve left a camera on the front seat of my car and become a victim.” According to the LAPD, the average cost of burglary and theft from motor vehicles to each victim is roughly $1,885. “I think the message is loud and

clear,” said Don Duckworth, executive director of the BID. “We all need to do a better job of hardening the target, of hiding those things we want to keep, of locking our car doors. Basically, we need to keep from making ourselves easy victims.” The message from LAPD and the BID is simple:

Lock It: Lock your vehicle every time you leave it unattended and take your valuables with you. Hide It: Hide your valuables in your trunk, under the seats, in the glove box, or other compartments within the vehicle. Ideally, take your property with you. Keep It: Personal responsibility is the

best prevention to safeguard personal property and to prevent becoming a victim. Cedric Sutherland, COO of City National Security Services, which oversees the ambassador program for the BID, said his team will be interacting with shoppers, tenants and business owners to promote the LAPD’s suggestions. “Our BID Ambassador, Steve Rhodes, will be on his bike, traveling throughout the BID and reminding people to be safe during the holiday season,” said Sutherland, who added, “We will also be working with local retailers to make sure that businesses do what they can to not only provide a safe environment for their customers but also to protect themselves from would-be thieves.” Det. Alicia Elliott said shoppers, in particular, should be extra vigilant. “When you go shopping and put your purchases in the truck of your car, you’re still not guaranteed to be safe,” she said. “There are plenty of thieves who will follow you from one store and wait for you to go into the grocery store. The Marina del Rey Boat Parade is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with what hopefully will be the largest event in the group’s history. This year’s parade takes place on Saturday, December 8 starting at 6 p.m. at Burton Chace Park. This year, the golden anniversary will kickoff with an event for families and kids at Burton Chace Park from 1 to 4 p.m. Activities at the event include crafts, face painting, balloon animals, making a winter bird feeder, fun, music and more. As in past years, fireworks at 5:55 p.m. will make the start of the parade. Organizers are hoping for more than fifty boats to participate. This year, Redondo Beach’s and Newport Beach’s boat parades are taking place on different weekends, which could lead to an even larger

Parade celebrates anniversary with gold medalists (cont’d) (continued from page 3) In honor of its golden anniversary, this year’s Grand Marshall is three-time Olympic gold medalist, Kerri WalshJennings. She will be accompanied by 2012 gold medalist swimmer Rebecca Soni and Steve Hegg, 1984 gold and silver medal cyclist. Walsh-Jennings, who currently resides in Manhattan Beach, began her career on the indoor volleyball court at Stanford University and garnered a number of records before transitioning to the sand. As a beach volleyball player, she has become one half of the winningest team in beach volleyball history with partner Misty May-Treanor. Married to U.S. volleyball player, Casey Jennings, she is also the proud mom of two young sons. Walsh-Jennings won her three gold medals with Misty May-Treanor in Athens (2004), Beijing (2008), and London (2012). She was AVP Best offensive and Most Outstanding Player in 2003 and 2007 and is only the second player in NCAA history to receive First-Team All-American honors all four seasons while at Stanford University (1996 – 1999). She is also the first player in Pac–10 history to record 1,500 kills (1,553), 1,200 digs (1,285) and 500 blocks (502). In 2011, she was inducted into the Stanford University Hall of Fame.

First American to medal in five-straight Olympics visits Rotary to share medals and stories about the London games Westchester Rotary had a special guest at its Wednesday, November 28 meeting, when gold medalist Double tap and Skeet shooter, Kim Rhode stopped by to discuss her time at the 2012 London Olympics and to display her medals. Double tap is a shooting technique where two well-aimed shots are fired at the same target with very little time in between shots. Rhode was born and raised in Southern California and started shooting at young age with her family. Winning medals and accolades at club shoots, she gained the attention of scouts and at the age of 13 began training for the Olympics. At just 16, she took home the gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and became the youngest female gold medalist in the history of Olympic shooting. She went on to win the bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and a 2004 gold medal in Athens. After double tap was eliminated as a sport in the Olympics, Rhode concentrated her efforts on skeet shooting and took home the silver medal at the games in Beijing. The road to the London Olympics were perhaps the most challenging and “more overwhelming” for Rhodes than previous games. Her team had planned to meet in Denmark to get in last minute training before the

games, which could involve shooting an exhausting 500-1,000 rounds a day. Getting to Europe early would also help acclimate the athletes to the time change. With only three shooting ranges in London, the team knew it was going to be difficult to get any training done there. With the rest of the team already in Denmark, Rhode tried unsuccessfully to board a plane to the country three days in a row, each

one cancelled. This left her having to train alone in L.A. without her team. When her dog ate her ticket to London, she began to wonder if all these were events were an omen. By the time she made it to London, however, even with the warm rooms in the Olympic village that made it hard to sleep, Rhode was ready for competition. The London games were the first time she would not participate

in the opening ceremony because her event was the next day. Watching the “best fireworks” she had ever seen from her Olympic village balcony, she had a sense of calm. Said Rhode, “I wasn’t nervous. I was very at ease. I figured I was either going to do it, or not do it.” The next day, Rhode ended up hitting 99 out of a 100 targets, tying the world record. At the podium, Rhode recalls being overcome with emotions. “At the London games many memories flashed in my head...Having my gun stolen, a breast cancer scare. It’s really about the journey and each and every time it has me bawling. It’s what’s gonna get me going for the 2016 games.” Winning a gold medal at the London games made Rhode the first American to medal in five consecutive Olympics and the only woman to win three individual gold medals for shooting. Rhodes estimates she has fired upwards of 4 million shots in her lifetime, and has days were she has shot 500 targets and only missed one or two of them. At the meeting she announced that she has her eyes set on the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.

Looking Back... Putting Our Town on the Map

Erasmus wrote, “In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.” Well I am here to tell you, there is nothing royal at all that comes with blindness. As a result of a little malady I was suffering through, I came up essentially blind in the left eye. Through the miracle of modern medicine, however, I have been measured for a new lens, and the problem will be solved shortly. It cannot be too soon for me. Reading and writing have been particularly difficult, and driving an automobile at night is almost impossible. But I am still, “looking back” nevertheless, and wishing you...Happy Holidays from Westchester and Playa del Rey! By the time you read this, you will, I hope, have had a very Happy Thanksgiving, and will be preparing for Christmas. As I wrote last month, Thanksgiving Day was more or less the birthday of Playa del Rey; that being the day in 1904 when the town and the early developments were dedicated. Unfortunately, in just ten or twelve years, nearly all of that first round of development burned to the ground or washed out to sea, although the residents of Santa Monica,“appreciated the firewood.” Until 1921, only a few homes remained and three or four

buildings. Then the arrival of Fritz Burns permanently put Playa del Rey, and later, Westchester on the map. For many years I have been writing and re-writing a screenplay about our town called Beach of the King. The history of the area is an exciting topic and maybe I will finish the thing one day, beginning with the account and subsequent annihilation of the early inhabitants the Tongva, through the Mexican Rancho Period; the written descriptions of Old California by Richard Henry Dana (Two Years Before The Mast), and William Tecumseh Sherman (Memoirs); the rise and fall of Port Ballona and the first attempt to build Playa del Rey, Mines Field (LAX), the development of Loyola University (LMU); and the glory days of Coach Tom Lieb’s Loyola University football and hockey teams; Sherman’s trolley cars; Daniel Freeman’s Inglewood and purchase of Rancho Sausal Redondo (Westchester); and the mythic boomto-bust-to-boom tale of the great Fritz Bernard Burns. One could write a book on any of these subjects, or in my case nine books, which I did write and I have two more about finished. And there are many interesting people associated with our area as well: Howard Hughes, Mae Murray, Rudolph Valentino, Ronald Coleman, Bessie Love, Father Joseph Sullivan, Barney Oldfield, Don Johns, George Beban, Mel Blanc (What’s Up Doc?), Cecil and Richard DeMille, Carmen

At one point, the Tongva roamed the dunes and seashore and crossed the ocean to Catalina in handmade boats, a Southern General and later a Scottish Lord owned most of Westchester, “the Waterman” Mike Doyle surfed at D&W and Gillis Beach was king. Finally, we are the undisputed home of the 1928 Air Races, a 1932 Olympic event, the Spruce Goose, the start of the Laurel Canyon Freeway, Randy’s Big Donut, the “baby” Vons, the Shack Burger, the Buggy Whip, the Loyola Theatre, the Lighted Pylons, Tower Pizza, Thrill Hill, Vinny’s Pizza, Saint Bernard High, Hank’s Pizza, Tompkins “Fireside” Square, the Westchester “cat woman” and “Christmas Candle.” Recently, there has been a great deal of renewed interest in the area, and I was lucky enough to be filmed by AOL Studios discussing the history of Surfridge and Palisades Del Rey. I hope that you have a chance to view it. The program, What Remain (available at aol.com) takes an interesting look at vanishing America including Surfridge, the Mt. Lowe Railway and the Saint Francis Dam. And the show must go on, even if you have to do it with a bum eye. After all, what we look back on and what we look forward to is up to us. Garcetti and Greuel neck-and-neck for mayor according to LMU poll Councilman Eric Garcetti and Controller Wendy Greuel are neck-andneck in the race to be the next Mayor of Los Angeles, though the contest is still anybody’s game, according to an exit poll conducted by the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles (CSLA) at Loyola Marymount University. Among voters who picked a candidate, Garcetti had 36.1 percent of the support, ahead of City Controller Wendy Greuel, at 32.3 percent, and Councilwoman Jan Perry at 15.1 percent. Radio personality Kevin James polled at 8.7 percent. However, those numbers represent only a third of the poll’s respondents – those who made a choice on how they would cast their ballots. More than two-thirds, or 67.2 percent, said they did not know who they would vote for in the March primary. Additionally, when asked how they would vote in a run-off between Garcetti and Greuel, poll respondents gave Greuel a slight edge: 50.6 percent to 49.4 percent. “While Garcetti and Greuel are the front runners, there are still enough undecided voters to swing the primary election in favor of any of the candidates,” said Professor Fernando Guerra, director of the center. The results are based on a tally of 4,411 completed surveys from 50 precincts in the city, collected by more than 150 student volunteers on Election Day last month. All polling places in the city of Los Angeles were eligible for selection, and fifty polling places were chosen representing 10 polling places of each racial/ethnic category: White, Black/African American, Latino, Asian, and Mixed race precincts. The survey uses CSLA’s sampling methodology called the “racially stratified homogeneous precinct approach.” This method addresses limitations in standard exit poll sampling that typically has not provided accurate sampling of ethnic groups in urban settings. The exit polls are designed to study the relationships between voting preferences, ethnic relations, policy preferences, community attitudes, government and community action and quality of life, while looking at the effects of precinct qualities on voting patterns. Undergraduate research is the driving force for the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey CSLA. Its students get hands-on experience conducting and analyzing exit polls, surveys, and demographic studies. The Leavey Center’s expertise in leadership studies, voting patterns, and diversity research puts it at the forefront of understanding the complex, dynamic city of Los Angeles.

NCWP Airport Relations Chair Craig Eggers doesn’t believe the runway needs to be moved and doesn’t buy the argument that the FAA is the one pushing for it. “People are pointing to the FAA as the ultimate foil for everything that needs to be done, and I get the concept for mandating all of this stuff and policing it all to death,” said Eggers. “But just as a practical matter, if you just look at the geography, most airports operate on waivers. LAX is as safe as it is because of who runs it, the air traffic controllers, the airlines. We have managed to do it this well so far, so beyond a bunch of projections down the road and fear mongering, there is no reason to move the runways fiscally, practically or safety wise.” Alternative 9 only contains options dealing with the transportation elements outside the Central Terminal Area. Alternative 9 features an intermodal transportation facility, an automated people mover connecting LAWA and metro facilities (once those become available), a future light rail station and a consolidated rent-a-car facility and parking at Manchester Square. “Recommending the combination of Alternatives 1 and 9, while not the optimal runway configuration, is an approach that balances the needs of the airport with the stated interests of the

neighboring communities,” said LAWA Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. “We promised to deliver a plan for LAX that is safe, environmentally balanced, sustainable, and financially responsible all while improving the passenger experience and ensuring that LAX will continue to be L.A.’s economic engine for years to come. We have done just that.” Still Eggers points out that the airport and government officials should be focused on modernizing LAX and regionalization, utilizing other airports like Ontario to help ease air traffic at LAX, rather than pushing for the runways to move north. “LAX has one of the smallest footprints, yet we still try to cram more into this small footprint,” said Eggers. “I must say that it’s really disappointing that Southern California has been unable or unwillingly to address transportation issues like other parts of the country have. I think this is a Secretary of Transportation issue and I think it should be looked at that way.” The final EIR on the project is expected to be completed in January of next year. It is expected that BOAC will then consider the staff recommendations, as well as public comments as part of their deliberations. According to LAWA, the decision, if any, could then go on to the L.A. Longtime Westchester resident passes away Lt. Col. Robert Razzeto, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Westchester on Sunday, October 28. Bob was born in 1928 in Chicago, IL, to Guy Razzeto and Margaret Walsh. He has two brothers, Guy and Jack, and two sisters, Peggy and Pat. When he was 18, Razzeto joined the Army. After serving briefly, he attended San Diego State and joined the Air Force ROTC program. In 1953, Razzeto graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Air Science. After flying B36 and B52 aircrafts in the Strategic Air Command from 1954-1961, he transferred to the Space and Missiles division and moved to Los Angeles. Razzeto retired from the Air Force in 1963 as a reservist. As a civilian, he worked at Douglas Aircraft, Hughes Helicopter, and the FAA. He finally retired in 1991. Razzeto and his wife Beverly married in 1952 and enjoyed almost 60 years of love and family life

Powerful men and emails By Nora Lee Owens Oh, surprise, surprise, as I write this, another powerful man– this time a powerful military man, and isn’t that just the definition of “power–” has fallen victim to the wiles of another heartless, marriage-wrecking woman. So far, I haven’t seen the dutiful wife standing up with her man on the dais while he does his mea culpa, but I’m sure it’s coming, or maybe I just missed it. Why are we always so surprised by this news? I’ll admit that when a young New York Congressman sent lewd pictures in emails to his love interest and got caught at it, I found it just the teensiest bit disgusting. Yuck, ugh, ick! And I liked him. So his case was a bit bizarre. I didn’t really need to know about it, but it was strange. Then we had the governor of South Carolina who told his family he was going out for a walk or something and actually went to South America to see his paramour. That is some long walk, and he must have secretly wanted to get

caught. Or maybe we need look no further than the past governor of our own state who himself looked no further than his housekeeper and managed to have two families merrily living under the same roof for many years. I think that one is another yucky one. Then there is my favorite, with the Speaker of the House calling for the impeachment of the President ostensibly because he was reviling holy matrimony by carrying on with an intern– all the while having an affair himself. Chutzpah, wishful thinking, or just plain politics? Maybe all of the above. Europeans find our political dalliances amusing and maybe they are. Certainly they aren’t funny to the wives who probably thought they could put up with their roving husbands so long as the spotlight weren’t aimed at them and they didn’t have to do the stand-up tragedy thing. The latest edition of “how naive are you America?” has brought out fangs from both the lions and the captives it seems. Some rude individuals are

opining that the latest wife is so frumpy that she deserved to get cheated on, and feminists on the other side are screaming that there seems to be a double standard. I’m trying to figure that one out. Does that mean that it would be okay to cheat on her if she were gorgeous, or does it mean that nobody would size up (no pun intended) the husband of a cheating famous woman? When are we going to grow up enough to realize that, hey, the human condition is not easily monogamous? People fall in love, they get used to each other, one party (or both) forgets to look and smell good, they flirt with another, they have affairs, they (almost always) get caught, and sometimes they get divorced. Are we outraged? Should we be? Is it our business? Can we throw the first stone? Meanwhile, people are still underwater in Staten Island and the Euro is in free fall. Maybe our obsession with infidelity and whether or not someone is a “Pretty Woman” are just escapes from reality. I hope so. Otherwise, we are pretty shallow as a people.

Utilize Westchester Parkway for fitness Editor’s Note: As stated in last month’s issue, organizing guru Mishele Vieira has relocated to Northern California and November was her last column. By Jeff Blair Like most, you probably face challenges maintaining a consistent exercise routine. Late work schedules and family obligations can wreak havoc on your fitness program and your health. While there are many open spaces to exercise in Los Angeles, such as parks and the beach, the omnipresent L.A. traffic can make it difficult to reach these spaces at times. Since proximity is one of the most important factors in maintaining a consistent exercise routine, these beaches and parks might not always be realistic. When biking, running or walking on L.A.’s busy streets, frequent traffic signals or stop signs can also make it difficult to complete an effective workout. Most exercisers prefer long, open stretches to avoid the “stop and start” frustration of exercising in hightraffic, urban areas. Busy traffic and distracted drivers may also pose a potential safety risk to local runners and cyclists on crowded streets. Local residents trying to overcome these challenges can utilize a local resource in your fitness quest: Westchester Parkway. Originally opened in 1993, the Parkway has long been one of our area’s best-kept fitness secrets. From Sepulveda Boulevard to Pershing Drive, Westchester Parkway

offers a 2.5 mile stretch (each way) of mostly open space to walk, run and bike. At almost any time of the day, runners, walkers and cyclists can be seen enjoying the Parkway. Mostly flat with a few hills, the street’s moderate terrain can be helpful for beginners trying to develop a new fitness routine. Designated bike lanes run on the east and west sides of the street providing a clear route for cyclists. A minimal number of stoplights means you will not need to “stop and start” throughout your cardiovascular workout either. Watching incoming jet planes land on the LAX runway can provide unique visual diversions to the south, while the open green spaces of the Westchester Golf Course can be viewed on the north. Grassy sections run on the south side of the street and trees line much of the middle of the street. The nice ocean breeze frequently blowing is another pleasant aspect you can enjoy in your exercise experience. At times, you may even find yourself exercising along with LAPD recruits who frequently make the Parkway part of the their training run. Follow these important tips when utilizing Westchester Parkway: • Safety First: Users should exercise caution during crossings and obey traffic laws. The speed limit is 50 MPH in places, so use appropriate caution when crossing the Parkway. If you listen to music while exercising, make sure you are aware of your surroundings. Keep a cell phone handy in case of an unlikely emergency. • Schedule your exercise: Calendar your workout like any other

appointment and try to maintain a consistent schedule to improve results. If you exercise only “when you get around to it,” human nature says you will probably not “get around to it” on a consistent basis. • Know your limitations: If you are a beginner, start with a twenty-minute walk or bike ride and progressively increase time and/or speed. Follow the “10 minutes out and back” approach: travel ten minutes from your starting point, turn around and then return to your point of origin. Increase your distance covered every two weeks. • Enlist your friends in your fitness quest: Try to find a workout partner or group. Having another person to answer to increases accountability and can improve results. • Take care of yourself: Users should also use appropriate sunscreen and hats and remember to hydrate, as the sun can be strong along Westchester Parkway, especially in the summer months. Finding joy instead of holiday stress By Fay Craton As the holiday season rushes forward it may be easy to feel like the world is full of Grinches and they have stolen Christmas! Everywhere we turn it seems we can be blinded by the advertising of toys, electronics, and all sorts of things to buy for gifts. The amount of money spent combined with frenzied activity can easily seem to be the entire goal of the season. The pace of the season picks up at a faster and faster pace until there is the grand finale– the family gathering (which in itself may invoke fear into the heart of the strongest of people). In Dr. Seuss’ 1957 book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, when the Grinch looked at Christmas, he had a hole in his heart. As he looked at the folks in “Whoville,” he only saw the importance placed on presents and the trappings of the festivities. It was just too much for him and he decided to keep Christmas from happening. The frantic and seemingly commercial activities overwhelm many people during the month of December! This overwhelm sets up in our bodies the biological stress response of fight, flight or freeze. The Grinch tried a little of it all, he fought, he flew and he attempted to immobilize Christmas! The Grinch is described as being “cuddly as a cactus” and “his brain is full of spiders.” In a way, that is what happens when we become stressed. Our thinking becomes distorted as if spiders are in our heads. Through our distorted thinking, we do and say obnoxious things making it difficult for others to be around us. It is no wonder we may experience tension resulting from holiday celebrations. Historical facts show holidays bring an increase in heart attacks, crime, homicides, and, in the aftermath of Christmas, spikes in divorce filings. There is no question about it, the holiday season can easily stress our ability to cope, stay healthy and communicate with people around us. During the holidays many people may feel not heard, not seen, and of little worth. Instead of relishing the season with joyful hearts, we may be feeling empty and disjointed. Mr. Grinch did a lot of mean things to stop Christmas. He was not a happy person and had a lot of angry behaviors. We each have a choice; we can either respond to holiday stress with an expression of anger, or we can make other choices. Perhaps the folks of Whoville can give us a map to what those new choices can be. In Whoville they were helping each other decorate, they were singing together, and raising their voices in harmonious (if noisy) song. They were even helping dress up “your uncle and your aunt with yards of whofult flay.” The folks of Whoville cared about one another. They were having fun and making light of the holiday. They were connecting with one another with

exuberance! When we attempt to be present with other people in an empathetic way relationship can transform. Healing within families can happen. The sense of being empty and cut off from other people can magically dissolve. When we find laughter in our activities tension is released. Simply laughing can make us healthier than when we scowl. But the story tells us still more! The Grinch thought he could make the folks of Whoville feel as miserable as he felt. Some people mistakenly think that if they can make a happy person feel sad it will make them more important and less miserable. Mr. Grinch, though his meanness and nasty behaviors, actually stole away all the Christmas stockings, decorations and treats. He took them far away to a mountaintop and placed them on a ledge where they were about to be shattered. He thought he was going to shock the folks of Whoville and they “will all cry boohoo!” But the Grinch was wrong. Nasty behaviors from one person to another person do not necessarily destroy another person’s happiness. People can choose to be happy in spite of mean people. This is done by simply deciding to respond in a positive way. It does not take a process to make the shift. It is a decision that can be made right now. The residents of Whoville knew Christmas was not in what the Grinch stole. Instead of crying, they welcomed Christmas singing, “Christmas Day is in our grasp so long as we have hands to clasp.” Through their happiness and connection with one another, a miracle happened. Grinch heard their song and understood Christmas is in our hearts and not in the gifts and decorations. The hole in his heart filled and healed. Joyfully he flew down the mountain with all the presents and joined in with their joy. He even carved the roast at the feast. During December, I hope you find joy. My wish for you is for you to experience the magic of empathy and connection with people around you. While Dr. Seuss died in 1991, within our hearts we can all join him in singing, “Christmas Day is in our grasp so long as we have hands to clasp. Christmas Day will always be just as long as we have we. Community benefits from space shuttle announced Councilman Bill Rosendahl recently announced that the California Science Center (CSC) will assist students and teachers in the 11th District with scholarships and special access to the space shuttle Endeavour. According to a letter from President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Rudolph, the CSC will assist with offering five days for students from within the Westchester/Playa Neighborhood Council’s areas to view the Endeavour; provide at least ten scholarships each year for the next five years; and provide five professional development programs for educators in the 11th District. The CSC offered the benefits as a way to thank the community for its support in making sure the retired space shuttle had a successful journey home. Back in October, teams of specialists throughout the City

orchestrated the slow-paced transport on surface streets from Los Angeles International Airport to Exposition Park. Westchester played a big part in the Endeavour’s journey to downtown and was stationed in a parking lot at La Tijera and Sepulveda for more than eight hours, while crews took down power lines along its route. “I’m thankful that the California Science Center worked so hard to bring the Endeavour to Los Angeles and for extending these generous benefits to my constituents,” said Rosendahl. “The West Coast’s largest science center is a first class operation and a point of pride for Angelenos.” The CSC has been working with Rosendahl’s staff and other neighboring communities to determine how to provide the best educational experience for those affected by the shuttle’s transport.
