WWII veteran readies to share his new novel and experience as submariner at book signing
By Shanee Edwards
At 98 years old, Playa del Rey resident and honored WWII veteran Patrick Zilliacus is going strong. He’s just returned from Normandy, as part of a small group to commemorate the historic D-Day, and this month, he’s launching his newest historical fiction novel and inviting the community to learn more about his experience as a submariner.
Getting to the U.S.
Born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1926, his mother was a beautiful and talented opera singer; his father was Chief of Staff for the Finnish National Guard. It wasn’t until war clouds started forming in 1938 that the Finnish President asked Zilliacus’s father to travel to the United States as a Finnish military attaché. Though his parents had divorced by then, his mother relied on the financial support to care for Patrick and his older brother.
“For some reason, my father stopped sending the payments,” says Zilliacus. “My mother said, ‘To hell with this, we’re going to go see him in the United States!’”
Easier said than done considering war was brewing, but his mother managed to finagle a six-month visitor’s visa to the U.S. for her and her sons to sort out the child support issues.
“So, we caught a ship and we came
to Brooklyn, New York, and that’s how I got here,” Zilliacus says. “I was supposed to be here for six months and I’m still here.”
When he arrived, he spoke no English–but that was just a matter of time, considering the teen was already a polyglot.
“I spoke many languages. Finnish, Swedish, German and Norwegian. A little bit of Estonian, a tiny bit of French and Italian because I lived for three years in Torino, Italy, when I was a little bambino from age two to five. And in the summers, we lived in Chambéry, France. It’s funny because I learned French before I learned English.
When I went to Normandy recently, I discovered that I spoke more French than I thought–it was there in the back of my noodle.”
War and a Path to Citizenship.
As a 17-year-old just learning English, Zilliacus wanted to remain in the U.S. permanently. The easiest path to citizenship was to join the military.
So that’s what he did, after lying to recruiters saying he had turned 18, the legal age to join, months before. His first choice was to be a Marine. But the day he tried to sign up, the recruiter had to leave his desk early for a hot date. Afraid the military would discover he was fudging his age if he waited too
long to enlist, he joined the Navy. He was quickly sent out to the Pacific, and into battle.
“I ended up on a submarine, and we were attacking the island of Kokusan To, destroying a radar station at a fuel depot,” he says.
Zilliacus spent his four war patrols in the South Pacific, torpedoing ships. When his sub ran out of torpedoes, the captain, known for being a risk taker, would make them surface so they could fire their five-inch guns at the targets.
Zilliacus says he and the other men were constantly in fear for their lives, because if their submarine were to sink, everyone would perish.
“Some guys got wounded. One guy lost his foot from a shell. One got splinters near his spine and had to have surgery on the submarine. One guy lost his front teeth when his face was too close to his gun. So, yeah, of course, I was scared. Who isn’t? You’re either scared or you’re a liar,” he says.
Despite the horrors, he says he looks back at the life-changing experience to include some positives.
“I met a lot of friends. I loved being in the Navy. It was fun. I stayed in the Reserves until they kicked me out,” says Zilliacus. “They wanted me to go to language school and go into naval intelligence. The language school was in Monterey for four months, but I had a (continued on next page)
WWII veteran (cont’d)
(continued from previous page) job, so I couldn’t do that.”
Life in the U.S. After the War.
While he didn’t go to language school, the military did pay for his education.
“I got a degree in mechanical engineering and a Master’s in electrical engineering,” says Zilliacus who also adds he’s an active member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Incorporated.
After his schooling, Zilliacus found himself excelling in several careers, including becoming a corporate recruiter. He even started his own headhunting business.
The father of four children and many grandchildren came to Playa del Rey some 30 years ago, and is happy living in the beach community with his wife, Mercedes.
Of all the places he’s lived during his storied life, he says Los Angeles is his favorite.
“The people are outgoing and varied. And, of course, I like the weather,” he says.
When selecting where to call home in L.A., Playa del Rey stood out at the time because he was traveling a lot for work and he wanted to live near the airport.
“We can afford to live where we are–a short walk to the beach–because of the airplane noise. I just take out my hearing aids and I don’t hear them!” he says.
Once he retired, Zilliacus decided to start a new hobby. Writing books and illustrating them seemed like a good plan.
“I needed something to do–I was a young guy in my early ‘90s!”
He’s now penned a total of four books, and he will be doing a book signing of his latest, “Blockade,” at Westchester’s Book Jewel on July 6 at 2 p.m. On July 15 at 10 a.m., the Westchester Senior Center regular will be doing a signing there as well.
“Everyone is welcome,” he says. Being Honored in Normandy, France.
Because of his membership in the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., last month, Patrick was asked to be part of a special delegation to Normandy for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, where he also had the opportunity to meet President Biden. He was surprised they asked him, considering he only fought in the Pacific, never in Europe.
“I didn’t kick the Germans out of France, but I guess they needed more World War II veterans. So I said, ‘Fine, I’d like to go.’ I’ve been in France a lot but never to Normandy. So, I went there and it was a wonderful experience,” he says.
They visited several small French towns, including Bayeux, which was the first city the Americans liberated from the Germans during the war.
“They loved seeing us! There were eight of us, and we’d sit in the street and the people would completely fill the street. Guys from the Army directed
traffic around us, and we’d sit there, sign things and pose for pictures for hours. It was an overwhelming display of gratitude and friendship on the part of the people,” he says.
Though he attended numerous official ceremonies, the one where President Biden and French President Macron made speeches was probably the most high-profile. Zilliacus can clearly be seen in the video clips that aired to millions of people around the world, making an impression on the nonagenarian.
“I was kind of fixated on this huge screen when I was looking at myself with Biden and with Macron, that was kind of nice,” he says humbly.
During the trip, the veterans went to many of the sites where Americans stormed the beaches, to museums and other historic locations. But unfortunately, new dangers presented themselves.
“They were all very moving experiences, but all of us caught COVID. Everybody in the veterans group got it,” he adds.
But fortune favors the brave and he’s now fully recovered from the illness.
Hope for the Future.
Looking back at the war, Zilliacus hopes future generations will do whatever it takes to find peaceful solutions to any conflicts that may arise.
“I hope they will take away the strong feeling that we should never have that kind of a war again. We should find other ways of settling problems than killing each other. It’s a primitive approach to settling problems and anything else beats doing that. And I have a personal principle: be nice to everybody, including people who are not nice to you because the best way to punish somebody for not being nice to you is to be nice to them,” he says.

Celebrating pivotal moments in history
By Cozette Vergari
Ask yourself, which are the most important moments in history? There are so many. But, over the last few weeks, we have celebrated four of the most important in American history. From Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy to Juneteenth and Independence Day.
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, honors the memory of all United States military personnel who have lost their lives in their service to America and its citizens. The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868, then known as Decoration Day, and observed on May 30. The holiday was proclaimed by Commander-inChief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the American Civil War.
This national observance followed many local observances that were started between the end of the Civil War and Logan’s declaration. Many cities and people have claimed to be the first to observe it. However, the Department of Veterans Affairs credits Mary Ann Williams with the idea of commemorating all fallen soldiers by laying flowers upon their graves on Memorial Day. Mary Ann Williams (1821-1874), of Columbus, Georgia, was active in the Soldier’s Aid Society and founded the Soldiers’ Home in Columbus. Official recognition of Memorial Day as a holiday spread among the states, beginning with New York in 1873. By 1890, every Union state had adopted the holiday. In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, establishing the holiday as “Memorial Day,” with the observance falling on the last Monday in May.
This year commemorated the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day operation of June 6, 1944 in Normandy, France, which brought together the land, air and sea forces of the Allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The WWII operation, given the codename “Overlord,” delivered five naval assault divisions to Normandy. More than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy. The name and date loom large in the history book of World War II, perhaps second only to December 7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. It is credited with commencing the liberation of France and the rest of Western Europe during World War II. Planning for the operation began the previous year in 1943. The planning included a substantial military deception, codenamed “Operation
Bodyguard” to mislead Hitler and the German Army. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt placed Major General Dwight D. Eisenhower in command of the Allied forces. Allied casualties were high, and many lost their lives, but the operation was credited as an Allied victory, substantially contributing to the collapse of German defenses throughout France and eventual victory.
Juneteenth, also known as “June Nineteenth,” and originally known as “Jubilee Day,” holds a profound cultural significance. It represents the moment when federal troops, under the leadership of Union General Gordon Granger descended upon Galveston, Texas, in 1865, seizing control of the state and proclaiming the liberation of all those held in the chains of slavery. This momentous occasion took place two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Lincoln proclaimed “I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves, are, and henceforth shall be free…”.
In 1865, freed men in Texas initiated “Jubilee Day,” celebrations which were held annually on June 19 thereafter. These gatherings often featured music, barbecues, prayer services and other joyful activities. Texas led the way by making Juneteenth a state holiday in
1979. Dr. Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” played a pivotal role in Juneteenth’s recognition in Texas 45 years ago.
In 2016, she made history again by capturing national attention. At age 89, Dr. Lee embarked on a 1,400mile trek from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington, D.C., petitioning for the official recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday. And, in June 2021, Congress declared it a federal holiday.
The date was July 4, 1776, and the document signed was formally titled “The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen States of America.” Today, it is just known as the Declaration of Independence and regarded as the founding document of the United States of America.
The day of the signing was two days following a vote by the Continental Congress for separation and independence from Great Britain. The declaration, written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, with assistance from Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston, described the reasons the Thirteen Colonies saw the need to separate from Great Britain and become independent sovereign states, no longer subject to British colonial rule. It was signed at the Pennsylvania Statehouse in Philadelphia by all 56 delegates to the Second Continental
Congress, now known as our Founding Fathers. Congress had previously created the Continental Army on June 14, 1775 , making George Washington Commander-in Chief.
Washington had led his soldiers through approximately a dozen military conflicts during the American Revolution. As the Declaration of Independence was being ratified, George Washington and his army were in New York. He was officially notified by a letter dated July 6, 1776, written and sent by President of the Continental Congress, John Hancock, of the ratification by Congress. On the evening of July 9, 1776, thousands of Continental soldiers were ordered by Washington to march to and assemble promptly at 6 p.m. to hear a reading of the declaration. July Fourth has been celebrated as Independence Day, recognized as our nation’s birthday, annually since the first celebration at the site of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence.
The Westchester/Playa Historical Society’s current exhibit, “Salute To Our Schools” will continue through the summer months at the Discovery Center. All students who attend a local school and visit the exhibit will be given a mystery gift card to The Book Jewel, the exhibit sponsor, if they fill out a postcard and return it to the bookstore.
The Discovery Center is open to the public on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon and, otherwise, by appointment. It is located at 6207 W. 87th Street in Westchester. Visit wphistoricalsociety.org for more information.
Cozette is an attorney and lifelong resident of Westchester. She is the President of the Westchester/Playa Historical Society. Together with a group of dedicated volunteers, the organization is working on creating new programming and events to celebrate the history of the area and engage the community in preserving it for future generations.

Celebrating 24 years OF THE LAX COASTAL FOURTH OF JULY PARADE
The LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be hosting the 24th Annual Fourth of July Parade. Since its inception in 2000, our local parade has continued to expand and has become a symbol within our community. Through the years, parade participants have included the 501st Legion/Road Squadron, LAPD flyovers, the Great Pyrenees, marching bands, and a countless range of giant and creative floats.
Every year, this event shows the strength and spirit of our community and is a testament to how the LAX Coastal area is unlike any other neighborhood in Los Angeles.
The parade would not be possible without the countless volunteers and sponsors, committed to lifting up our community. We’d also like to recognize the residents of Loyola Blvd. for their cooperation over the years. Thank you to Councilwoman Traci Park for joining us this year, and to our Grand Marshal, the Angel City Chorale!
The LAX Coastal Chamber loves celebrating America’s birthday with all of you and we look forward to another fantastic parade!
While we are celebrating the Fourth together, the Chamber is also celebrating another phenomenal year of growth. Over the past year, the LAX Coastal Chamber has been expanding our footprint, now with our highest number of members in Chamber history. Over 675 businesses are now members, ranging from global companies to local small businesses. Our 2023-2024 Board Chair, Ravi Singh, says it best, “Together, as a cohesive team, we have advanced toward a future marked by sustained growth, broader outreach, and heightened impact. Our collective efforts have been dedicated to enhancing the vitality of our business community and fostering opportunities for local enterprises.” The Chamber has experienced significant growth, which has been further strengthened by our dedication to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). At the heart of our organization, are our Core Values: Trust & Respect, Welcoming, Collaborative, Continuous Learning, and Supportive.
And we only have more growth ahead of us, as the LAX Coastal area prepares to welcome the world to our doorstep at the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The sports and entertainment industry is flourishing right next door in the “City of Champions” bringing with it new opportunity for advancement across all industries. The Chamber is prepared to help businesses “Get GAMES ready,” through advisement on RAMP LA., an initiative to provide equitable access to procurement opportunities to businesses, and through our Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Certification Program. The SBE Program takes place over four weeks, is offered quarterly, and helps business owners understand the procurement process, assists them with developing a capability statement, and provides an education of all local SBE Certifications. The Chamber is committed to helping local businesses take advantage of the opportunities we have coming with these major sporting events.
The parade kicks off a new year of leadership the Chamber. “Grabbing the torch” from Ravi, is our new Board Chair, Maria Canchola. Happy Fourth of July! The LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce and its many community partners work hard every year to put on the Fourth Of July Parade.
The chamber is honored to present the 24th annual event on Thursday, July 4 with the theme, “Sounds of Summer.” We invited our participants to create floats and entries that celebrate all the melodies they love to hear in July, August and September, from waves crashing and baseball cheers to the crackle of a campfire and the melodies of nostalgic class rock tunes. For our Grand Marshal, we wanted to keep with the music theme, so we are thrilled to welcome the Angel City Chorale as our 2024 Grand Marshals! The group was founded by Artistic Director Sue Fink, and what a sound they bring! Their spirit, diversity, and musical excellence led them to earn the coveted Golden Buzzer on “America’s Got Talent,” and since then they have delighted millions worldwide with their videos and performances.
We look forward to seeing you all along Loyola Blvd., hearing your collective cheers and feeling the energy you all bring on parade day.

Koshin Taiko Drummers
Koshin Taiko is honored to be a first-time participant in this year’s LAX Coastal Fourth of July Parade! Koshin practices nearby at its home at the Venice Japanese Community Center. Koshin traces its lineage back to the first professional taiko group in Japan, Oedo Sukeroku Taiko, who made history with its blend of classical Japanese music, martial arts and dance. The late Sensei Etsuo Hongo brought the Oedo Sukeroku style to his own energetic compositions when he founded Koshin Taiko in 1992. In Koshin’s unique form, powerful and beautiful taiko sounds are created through carefully choreographed movements.
The synthesis of powerful sound and graceful movement, along with their visually distinctive Okedou (rope tightened drums), makes Koshin Taiko one of the most dynamic taiko groups in Los Angeles. By incorporating aspects of other styles of drumming while still exploring the rich traditions of Japanese taiko, Koshin continues to live up to their name it was given more 30 years ago which means, “bright heart or spirit.”
For more information about Koshin Taiko, please visit koshintaiko.org or check them out on Instagram @koshintaiko or facebook.com/ venicekoshintaiko.

It’s been a banner year for sports at SMPREP, with Mariner Football winning the 2023 CIF Southern Section Division Championships, and girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball and girls’ soccer all winning their respective league titles! Congrats to the Stars of the Neighborhood
Congratulations to community volunteers Cory Birkett and Tracy Thrower Conyers, who have been named the 2023 NCWP Stars of the Neighborhood and will be honored during the annual Fourth of July Parade. The purpose of the award is to identify and honor those unsung heroes of our community who quietly, persistently and without fanfare voluntarily perform good deeds that serve the needs of their neighbors and/or the community.
Cory Birkett is a 28-year Westchester/Playa resident and alumna of LMU. Since 2007, she has been a local realtor helping home buyers and sellers navigate the unique Silicon Beach neighborhoods of Westchester, Playa del Rey and beyond.
Cory is dedicated to serving the people and communities she loves and spends much of her free time volunteering for local organizations. Ever since her daughter was in preschool, Cory has been committed to volunteering at local schools and has held leadership roles in the PTAs and Governing Boards of schools such as WPNS, Open Magnet Charter, WISH Middle and El Segundo High School. Her commitment to helping schools implement social-emotional programs, community service initiatives and parent volunteer programs has made her a driving force behind positive changes in local schools.
She was a co-founder of the “Open Hearts” community service club at Open School, where she led student volunteer projects with local organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Westside Food Bank and LAX Food Pantry. As an appointed community member of the Westchester/Playa Neighborhood Council’s Planning & Land Use Committee and Ad Hoc Community Plan Update Committee, Cory advocates for strategic and thoughtful development that enhances affordable housing opportunities while maintaining Westchester/ Playa’s unique neighborhood character. Cory has been very involved in the Community Plan Update process since 2019, studying City Planning’s Draft Maps, educating her neighbors about the process and advocating for a Community Plan that reflects the feedback and concerns of Westchester/Playa/Ladera residents.
In her free time, Cory loves to cook, garden and spend time with her husband, John, daughter, Delaney, and pet dog, Lily. Following her passion for cooking, Cory started a Facebook food group called “Quarantine Cooking - Westchester & Silicon Beach” during the pandemic as a way for local neighbors to share recipes during that more isolated time. The group is still active with more than 1,000
Tracy Thrower Conyers is a 23-year resident of Westchester. She moved here as a newlywed with a baby on the way. Once her daughter started school, Tracy found herself drawn to community activism and launched her blog, Living90045.com. Since then she’s been active in leadership with the Kentwood Home Guardians, Emerson Ave Community Garden and two Neighborhood Council committees, along with a lot of outspoken activism on social media regarding density development at the state and local level. When city planning sprung a new, radically different version of our Community Plan Update on us last summer, it naturally caught Tracy’s attention and galvanized her into action, teaming up with another community activist to form the Concerned For Westchester website and group.
In her professional capacity, Tracy is a realtor specializing in the Beach Cities, with a hyper-emphasis on Venice, Westchester and Manhattan Beach. She is a past practicing attorney and real estate tech founder. Tracy is an early adopter of all things digital and 22+ year real estate industry vet. She’s been quoted on topics of Silicon Beach real estate by trusted media outlets including the Los Angeles Times, KCET and The Argonaut.
Tracy and her husband are now empty nesters with their two cats and 5-year old “puppy.” Read more about Tracy and her latest professional projects at www. tracytalksreal.com.

Random Notes/Opinion
Consider a five-step plan to accomplish your fitness goals
By Jeff Blair
Opinion: Sarah and Paul are both in their mid-50s and have spent their lives working in stressful jobs and raising two kids, who are now in college. They decide to finally prioritize their health, at the urging of their doctors. The problem, is they have no idea where to start. They make an appointment with a certified personal trainer to discuss options. They do not want to be completely rigid about diet or exercise. They are a little apprehensive that the trainer will expect that. They simply want to maintain a good quality of life and feel better while maintaining some lifestyle flexibility.
The trainer sets up a consultation. Neither have injuries or conditions that would require physical therapy or a specific medical release. After considering their health history, goals and availability, the trainer lays out the following five-step plan for them.
LGBTQIA PROCESS
GROUP: NAVIGATING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS WITH SELF AND OTHERS
1. Strength train two days per week. Many people start to experience joint pain and a noticeable loss of strength somewhere around 50 years old. Loss of muscle is the primary cause of strength loss, so the trainer encourages Sarah and Paul to strength train. Muscle is the basis of all human movement and

as muscles weaken, movement can become painful in the joints. Strength training will not always eliminate pain, but it can be one of the best strategies to make joint pain more manageable. Strength training can improve bone health. Strength training can also improve many different health metrics, such as blood pressure, lipid profiles and even improve cognitive health. The American Heart Association even recommends strength training due to the various cardiovascular health benefits.
2. Begin to establish an aerobic exercise foundation. The trainer tells Sarah and Paul a long-term approach to health and fitness is the best approach. One reason is that dropout rates increase when people start at a very high intensity. He encourages them to start by walking or performing some other moderate aerobic exercise program, due to the many benefits for the heart and overall health. Walking and biking are examples of moderateintensity aerobic exercise. The government recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise at least five times per week. If Sarah and Paul exercise together or with another friend, they are more likely to continue.
3. Once they are confident of their good form, they begin to increase weights during strength training. The trainer tells Sarah and Bob that progressive overload is a fundamental strength training concept. Progressive overload means steadily and appropriately increasing weights over time will produce more benefits than using the same, lighter weights indefinitely. These benefits may be seen in improved bone density, greater strength and more muscle. Progressive overload doesn’t mean Sarah and Paul will become massive bodybuilders and at some point, weight increases will slow and potentially even stop. But for the first year or so, most people can expect to see steady increases.

4. Once an aerobic exercise foundation is established, add in aerobic interval training one or two days per week. Interval training is a form of aerobic exercise where you alternate higher-intensity exercise for a specific period (maybe 60 seconds) with lower or moderate-intensity exercise (maybe two-minutes) and repeat this pattern a specific number of times (six or eight is a common number). Interval training can be performed using almost any form of aerobic activity such as cycling, swimming or even power walking.

Interval training can help you get the same or better benefits as traditional aerobic training in much less time. Interval training can improve VO2 max and make your lungs and heart more efficient and stronger. Interval training is also excellent for cognitive health. 5. Find a way to add fun to your routine. While not all exercise will be completely fun, the trainer tells Sarah and Paul they should look for ways to have fun or even find joy in exercise. Many people find pleasure in outdoor exercise. Walks or bike rides on the beach, hiking a beautiful hillside or taking an outdoor yoga class are all ways people find more enjoyment from exercise. Finding ways to change things up at times and exploring new forms of exercise can increase Sarah and Paul’s sense of well-being and help make lifelong exercise a habit.

Developing skills to have personal freedom
By Fay Craton
Opinion: Summertime–a time for music, vacations, camping and exploring! Produce stands are abundant with watermelon, peaches, cherries, corn and other tasty treats. Warm weather and moonlit evenings create opportunities for friends to gather to enjoy barbecues, campfires and s’mores. There is a sense of freedom as breaks are taken from work and studies.
A childhood memory I have of summertime is outings with my Girl Scout troop. We did a lot of outdoor activities such as camping and backpacking. One of the skills we had to learn while camping was how to build and light a fire. We learned we could not just pile a bunch of wood together and toss a match at it. In most cases, it just wouldn’t work. A fire requires oxygen, fuel and a heat source. We learned to carefully construct a campfire, starting with the first piece of wood placed on to the ground. Then, we carefully crafted a structure in which a fire would thrive.
Skill development is also needed to maintain a sense of personal freedom. It takes more than breaks for relaxation to hold onto a sense of ease in life. Personal freedom is an internal perception about life. Think of your life as your own personal paradigm. Your views, beliefs and sense of worth are in your paradigm, or the pattern, in which you function in the world. If you have a strong sense of worth, you most likely are able to make decisions based on your values and needs. If your sense of worth is not strong, you most likely are living your life as a reflection of what you perceive others want from you. Personal freedom is when you are guiding your life internally.
How is a life crafted to have a paradigm where personal freedom is possible? First, it is important to recognize the more trauma you experience in life, the harder it is to have a good sense of worth. In addition–illness, disabilities, shame, experiencing being different from others, and struggling to obtain basic life needs can also make the task harder. However, even if it is hard, you can still develop self-worth. In developing any skill, you need to have a teacher, you must practice and recognition of progress is crucial–even if the recognition is only in a journal.
If you do not have a teacher or a therapist to help, consider the following:
• Start the process by observing your emotions and feelings. Emotions are sensations in your body. Feelings are the sensations, plus social conditioning as to their interpretation. How many variants do you experience? What triggers both your positive and negative emotions?
• Pay attention to your body. Does it feel better when you exercise? Are you obtaining medical care? Are you eating nutritiously?
• Nurture relationships with people who are supportive. If you are in abusive situations, quickly seek help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is (800) 7997299 or you can text 88788.
• Throughout the day, take a few minutes to breathe deeply to clear your mind.
• Are you participating in any activities that provide you with a sense of peace? If not, consider taking up a hobby that is enjoyable like gardening, meditation or listening to music.
• Consider your life priorities. Are you using your time to accomplish them?
• Take breaks from work and studies to relax.
• Ask yourself if the activity you are doing is something you enjoy or find valuable, or are you doing it because you think someone else expects it of you?
• This list is not all-inclusive. Consider activities that will help you to get to know yourself better.
My wish is for you to enjoy personal freedom this summer.
I hope you enjoy the moonlit evenings, warm weather, barbecues and good supportive friends.

A sense of freedom comes when life is internally driven, has meaning and purpose; it also comes from taking care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. In Scouting, when we built a fire, we thought about all the necessary steps. Personal freedom also requires considering all the steps.

St. Anastasia Catholic Church has nearly completed a remodel of the interior of their church, and they’re excited to share their progress with the community!
Planning for the project began before the COVID pandemic as a part of the “Called to Renew” capital campaign initiated by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. St. Anastasia committed to raise $1.3 million as their portion of the overarching Diocesan goal, of which half was to be directed back to help with the remodel, deferred maintenance and various projects for the school as well.
The physical renovation began in the late fall of 2022 starting in the sanctuary of the church. The first part was to remove the existing platform and altar to make way for the new marble flooring and custom-built retablo and altar. The retablo and altar were created
with inspiration from liturgical studies around the world to create the center of the liturgical celebrations. The beautiful wood-crafted retablo stands from floor to ceiling and was hand painted, inch by inch, creating details to resemble actual marble. The same marbling technique was used to capture the similar details on the altar and ambo.
The flooring was removed from the nave of the church, in preparation for specially designed terrazzo and porcelain tile flooring to be installed. The walls and ceiling received a fresh coat of paint just in time to allow the parish to celebrate Christmas in the newly refreshed space. While awaiting the new oak pews to arrive, the team took the opportunity to reengineer the sound quality with new speakers, wireless microphones and custommade acoustic panels installed in the ceiling. St. Anastasia was also able to
celebrate First Holy Communion and Confirmation, welcoming the new regional Bishop Rev. Matt Elshoff for their Confirmation.
St. Anastasia has been a pillar in the Westchester and Playa del Rey community for more than 70 years. The school and parish partner for numerous events throughout the year including their Parish Picnic each fall and the Parish Ball in March. They also collaborate on service projects such as the annual Turkey Drive (supporting St. Margaret’s Center), “Blessing Bags” for the unhoused and Adopt-a-Family, each Christmas.
This month, the community is invited to join St. Anastasia for a Bazaar and Parking Lot sale on July 20! Applications for vendors are being accepted through July 11.
This summer, they will also celebrate an Alumni Mass to congratulate all
