The spirit of giving: local groups work to give back to those in need Local groups are hard at work making sure the less fortunate have a good holiday season thanks to food drives, toy collections and adopt-afamily programs. One such group is the Rotary Club of Westchester, which is hosting a donation drop-off for the nonprofit
Safe Place for Youth (SPY). Located in Venice, SPY acts as a drop-in center for homeless youth, offering much needed food, clothing, Internet access, health services and case management. The club regularly works with SPY by cooking meals at the group’s drop-in center a few times a year, but

a recent tragedy spurred Rotarians to hold a special donation drive after learning that SPY’s storage unit was severely damaged in a fire last month. The destroyed unit contained the socks, blankets and clothing that the organization provides its clients during the winter months to help stay warm.

The bakery offers a seasonal menu for the holidays through December. In addition to their normal offering of Chocolate, Red Velvet, Celebration and Lemon cakes, Chocolate Candy Cane Cake, a chocolate layer cake filled with chocolate buttercream and crushed peppermint pieces, frosted in mint buttercream and covered in festive sanding sugar is available for purchase in its entirety or by the slice. Other offerings for December include Frosted Sugar Cookies in a variety of festive shapes, oldfashioned Gingerbread Men, Spiked Eggnog Cupcakes frosted with rum buttercream, Pumpkin Cheesecake and Pumpkin Bread Pudding. They’ll also have New Year’s sugar cookies and Champagne and Mimosa cupcakes available December 29 through the 31. Truxton’s updates its menu every few months to include seasonal specials and favorites. For winter, the restaurant is offering a variety of new entrÊes and dessert specials. Kale and quinoa make appearances in the Cold Red Quinoa Bowl and the Chopped Kale and Red Quinoa Salad with Fuji apples, roasted pecans and fig jam. The hearty Mom’s Grilled Eggplant adds layers of charred broccoli, spinach and seared mushrooms to an otherwise traditional dish. For dessert, if you can resist ordering the Truxton’s Bistro Cookie for Two, the restaurant is offering up a homemade Pumpkin and Spice Cheesecake with a ginger snap crust, topped with fresh whipped cream and cranberry compote, the Salted Caramel Carnival Sundae, made with salted caramel gelato and cinnamon sugar churros filled with caramel, and a Flourless Chocolate Cake topped with salted caramel gelato, chocolate shavings and fresh whipped cream. Remember to “Lock it, Hide it, Keep it” to help keep your property safe By Cyndi Hench In recent weeks, we have enjoyed a reduction in the number of crime incidents in Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista as compared to earlier this year, but as we enter the holiday season, a period that often includes an uptick in crime, some reminders are in order. We should all take care to be aware of our surroundings, stay alert to suspicious activity and to be mindful not to create unnecessary targets for crime. The Los Angeles Police Department has provided several safety tips to help keep you and your loved ones protected during December. Many of us take advantage of the convenience of shopping on the computer, but with the increase in online shopping comes the increase in home deliveries and boxes being left unattended on front porches. According to LAPD Officer Renee Minnick, thieves will literally follow the UPS and FedEx trucks around our streets and steal boxes
Page 4 • December 2014
that are delivered to homes. It is recommended that arrangements be made so that boxes are not left unattended. Instead, have them delivered to your work, if possible, or to a neighbor who is at home. You can also try a service like Amazon Locker or The UPS Store, where you go to pick up your deliveries. Another safety tip concerning deliveries is to be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. Always take care when deciding to open your door to a stranger. During the holidays, it is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people by fraudulently soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes, although no charity is involved. Before handing out any money, ask for identification and find out how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied with the solicitor’s answer, do not donate. Better yet, do not transact any business with someone who knocks on your door. Instead, donate directly to a
recognized charitable organization. No matter the season, we have a large number of cars that are burglarized in the neighborhood. Many times, vehicles have been left unlocked and burglars get in and rummage around collecting what they can. Other times, a window is smashed to break into the car because something that appears to be of value has been left in the car. LAPD tells us time and again to “Lock it, Hide it, Keep It.” Remember, do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight. Other helpful reminders to help keep your property safe this season include: • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. • When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspapers and mail.
Joining a Neighborhood Watch can help you learn what is normal or suspicious behavior on your block.
• Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. • Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. Also, please remember that large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. Cyndi Hench is the president of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa and Public Safety committee chair.

The spirit of giving: local groups give back (cont’d) (continued from page 1) for us to jump in and help,” said Darlene Fukuji who is spearheading the collection drive as part of the rotary’s young professional group. “We hope that this donation drive will help SPY to alleviate their stress of trying to recover from the damage of the fire. SPY is a great nonprofit near and dear to the Westchester Rotary Club.” The donation drive will be held at Sifted:LA, an antique and vintage store located at 6259 W. 87th Street in the Westchester Triangle on Saturday, December 6 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The group is looking to collect new or gently used winter clothing, new underwear, socks, sleeping bags, warm blankets and hygiene products. Monetary donations will also be accepted. “Giving back is what rotary is,” said Westchester Rotarian Nora MacLellan. “It’s about giving back to the community or the world at-large. It can be as large as eradicating polio or helping these young homeless people in Venice or putting eyeglasses on kids.” In Playa del Rey, organizers are getting ready for the 11th annual community Toy Drive held at Triangle Park. Every year, the event collects hundreds of toys for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to be distributed to the hospital’s families. The collection is scheduled for Saturday,
Jane St. John (second from right) and Felicia St. Denis (right) help sponsor the annual toy drive in Playa del Rey.
December 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is sponsored by Jane St. John, RE/ MAX Estate Properties and Felicia St. Denis, Flowers by Felicia, with support from Beach Pizza, StarbucksMarina del Rey and Bristol Farms. Triangle Park is located between Trask Ave. and Waterview Street (off of Pershing) in Playa del Rey. This event takes on a festive atmosphere with neighbors socializing and sharing coffee and snacks while volunteers collect new and unwrapped toys. Gift cards for grocery stores and Target are also appreciated.
St. John, who is organizing the event for the first time this year, is grateful for the work of the drive’s founder, Playa del Rey resident Pam Stacey, in creating an event that gives back to so many in need and brings the community together. “This event is a great way for neighbors to connect with each other while supporting a good cause,” said St. John. “It’s important to give back to our community in whatever way you can, and we are always overwhelmed by the amount of generosity that our neighbors show in supporting the
event.” The animal shelter drive that is usually held in conjunction with the toy drive has been postponed, but donations for animals will still be accepted at the event. Through December 15, Visitation School is collecting toys to benefit St. Margaret’s Center, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support services to homeless and low-income families. The toys will be distributed to the center’s clients at its annual Christmas Program, which will be held on December 20 at Inglewood’s Morningside High School. Toys for infants and tweens are especially appreciated. A drop-box for toys is located at the school at 8740 Emerson Ave. in Westchester. The Neighborhood Council is also asking the community to give back this season. They are encouraging people to join in Councilman Mike Bonin’s efforts to donate to the Westside Food Bank’s Holiday Drive. The food bank supplies food to social service agencies across Los Angeles and is in need of non-perishable food items. Donations can be dropped off to the councilman’s Westchester office, located at 7166 W Manchester Ave. through December 20. Donations can also be made online at the Food Bank’s “virtual food drive” at 11thdistrict.com/wfb_drive.

Wild was an honoree at this year’s Fourth of July Parade.
Westchester resident celebrates 100 th birthday By Martha Horn and Diane Gonsalves Even at one hundred years old, Playa del Rey resident Fred Wild appears to be a man on a mission, trying to cram even more adventures into an already packed life. He celebrated his 100th birthday November 29th with a party for family and friends at the Proud Bird Restaurant where he could look out onto LAX airport, which he helped design decades before.
Born in 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Wild was living on his own by the age of 16. His mom sent a stipend of $15 a month to cover the rent on a room where he did his “cooking” on the bottom of an overturned iron. During a break from his classes at college, he toured the western states on a motorcycle he’d rescued from a trash dump and restored. He graduated from the University of Utah with an engineering degree at 17 and soon after met the “love of (continued on page 23)

Random Notes/Opinion Take a breath this holiday By Fay Craton Opinion: Are you struggling to adjust to difficult events? Over the last few weeks, several people have shared with me events that have brought to them bad memories. Bad memories can sneak up and throw off your best intentions to stay calm. The onset of the holiday season can easily increase your stress to a point where it does not take much to trigger painful past recollections. Clearly, the pressures of daily life, the constant negative onslaught from national and world news and the whirl of seasonal activities and expectations can make it difficult to keep feeling good. Many people are experiencing depression, anxiety, resentment and anger. If it looks like I am speaking to you, I want you to stop, right now, and take a very slow deep breath and an even slower exhale. Why is a breath important? Deep, slow breathing has been proven to offer many mental and health benefits. Here are a few examples:
¡ A long deep breath can clear your mind. ¡ It gets you to take a pause from what is happening around you and to pay attention to a centering process within you. ¡ Taking a breath helps shift chemicals made in your body that trigger stress or depression. ¡ A cleansing breath increases oxygen to your brain, which helps you to think clearer. The act of deep breathing can help you remember what steps you need to take to regain your own power in your life. Let’s take a look at the above list. First, clear your mind. As long as you allow an event to dictate how you choose to respond, you have turned over control of your thoughts and feelings to something other than your own wisdom. Do not cling to the appearance of an event. You have the ability to choose your own response to absolutely every situation. In choosing your own response, you choose you own experience. You can choose to act from bad, destructive habits or you can choose to respond in a new manner, which has a chance
TheHTN.com
of leading to a positive outcome. During the slow, deep breath, you automatically pause. In the pause, you can change direction. You can choose to stop being reactive to what another person says, or does. You can choose to trust yourself and stay calm. This is the tricky part, because sometimes what you are reacting to appears to be so significant that to stay calm feels strange. It feels strange because you are learning new ways of responding. Frequently, people need help learning new, healthy reactions. While learning new behaviors, it is important you learn to understand just because you feel anxious or mad, you do not need to let the feeling control what you do and say. Within you is much more wisdom than simply chemical hormonal reactions or bad thought habits. A cleansing breath will help your wise mind regain control of what you choose to experience in life. Your wise mind needs oxygen. There is some great research about how getting oxygen to your brain can help in physical performance. The immediate take away from the
research is healthy breathing helps your mind think clearly. In fact, improving the amount of oxygen to your brain can help turn around foggy thinking. When your mind is clear, your wise mind has a better chance of guiding you. It is very helpful to look at situations from new perspectives. Sometimes, even bad memories can shift when looked at from new ways of seeing. Right now, you have the opportunity to create new and contented memories. The choice is up to you. In many faiths, breath is considered to be an analogy for “Spirit moving in and through life. My wish for you is for you to experience the peacefulness of Spirit. I envision you now responding to life events based upon your own wise mind, instead of being influenced by what others do. I hope you have a holiday season full of happiness. Your holiday fitness survival guide By Jeff Blair Opinion: It’s that time againtime for parties, gifts, snacks and...fitness? Actually most of us do not prioritize fitness during December as social and family gatherings often ease out normal exercise routines for even the most dedicated. In this month’s article, I am going to share with you my three tips to maintain a winning fitness routine while still enjoying the holidays with friends and family. I have used these tips successfully for fifteen years, and I am sure they can work for you as well. 1. Remember a little exercise goes a long way. Too many of us have an “all or nothing approach to fitness. “If I can’t workout for at least 90 minutes, why bother? During the holiday season when we attend social events (and face more temptation), it is too easy to say “I will start back up in January if the only choices are all or nothing. I recommend aiming for a middle ground. By exercising in small bits daily, you can stop the “no activity/ overindulging snowball from gaining full steam this month. Almost all of my clients say they make better eating choices when they exercise regularly. By starting your day with a power walk or some bodyweight exercises, you improve your chances of eating better and getting through
December with your fitness level intact. Looking for a more specific suggestion? I will be doing 50 pushups every day throughout December as part of a December “Pushup Challenge. If you want to do the same, you can break them into 5 sets of 10 or any other way you want to do it (2 sets of 25, 3 sets of 17, etc.). They do not need to be done all at one time to be effective. You can also complete easier pushup variations (knee pushups or even wall pushups, for example) if you cannot do traditional pushups yet. I recommend getting instruction first (and checking with your doctor for safety), but committing to a reasonable daily goal can help you make better eating choices during this month as well as burn some extra calories. If pushups do not work for you, commit to performing 20 minutes of cardio daily and track it on a calendar or app. Twenty minutes of cardio is as easy as 10 minutes out your front door and 10 minutes back to your home. Either way, a moderate amount of exercise can help elevate your mood and make you less likely to eat for emotional reasons. As the holidays bring stress for many people, a little healthy mood elevation can go a long way in December. (Continued on page 22)

Holidays can create challenges for seniors By Freddi Segal-Gidan Opinion: With all of the holidays in December, it’s a wonderful time to share the joys of family and friendship. It’s also an important time to make sure the older adults in our families and community are living as safely, healthy and happily as possible. If you have older family members or friends with health issues, there are things you can do to help make the holiday season a little brighter. The holidays provide an ideal opportunity to reach out and be inclusive. Make time to visit with older relatives and neighbors, especially those who live alone. Plan a visit, invite them to your home, take someone shopping or go for a drive to view the holiday lights. Try to involve older adults in the activities of the season, whether
it is helping to decorate their home or yours, wrapping gifts or offering to prepare a meal. Break tasks down to small, manageable parts that can be done together with brief instruction. Doing things together is more fun for everyone and helps people feel included. For older adults with memory problems, the holidays can present unique challenges. Large family gatherings may provide too much stimulation and the person with memory difficulties may become confused or agitated. If this occurs, suggest taking a walk outside together or finding another room where they can sit away from the noise and activities and maybe listen to music. Use family gatherings to reminisce together, tell family stories, look through old photo (continued on page 22)

Schools Westside Neighborhood School (WNS) goes green! WNS has partnered with the nonprofit Grades of Green to expand on its green initiatives. Environmental stewardship is a core value at WNS and is reinforced at every morning assembly with the students “Pledge to the Earth.” The goal of the partnership is to both educate the school community on the importance of reducing trash and to see how much lunchtime trash can be reduced at the school. To help implement the program, volunteer middle and elementary division WNS students have been separated into two student-led green teams. With the support of WNS elementary science teacher Shellinda Barre and middle school math and science teacher Kaitlin Lester, these students will help lead WNS in its green efforts. One initiative is “Trash Free Tuesdays” where students are encouraged to bring lunches that contain reusable containers and utensils instead of disposable ones. A new waste sorting system was also recently introduced and includes bins for landfill trash, recyclables, compostable items and liquids. With the efforts of WNS and other Los Angeles County schools, the hope is that thousands of bags of trash

Guests were treated to a welcome from NASA astronaut General Kevin Chilton, SBHS class of ‘72, and award winning journalist for KCAL News, Sylvia Lopez, class of ‘79. Both spoke about their experiences at St. Bernard and recounted memories of lessons learned while in high school and how those lessons are still with them today. Members of the school’s drama department, dance team and cheer squad performed to a crowded gym. Performances were followed by tours
of the school’s newly renovated spaces and small group sessions, including information on academics, college preparation, the single-gender STEM program and a panel led by current students. Future Viking athletes had a chance to meet with coaches and a club fair rounded out the event. Due to the success of the open house, St. Bernard has added a parents’ reception scheduled for Thursday, December 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. For more information or to RSVP for the parents’ reception, please contact Christina McCole at cmccole@stbernardhs.org. A Look Back at Westchester/Playa By David J. “Duke” Dukesherer, Sr.
History of Loyola Football With the holidays approaching, the days are shorter, the weather is changing and we are all preparing for Christmas and the New Year. Around here, that means lots of college football; go Bruins, Golden Bears, Wildcats and Roll Tide! Many Westchester residents might be surprised to learn that not too long ago around here, we were the center of our very own college football team: the Loyola Lions. In the 1930s and later in the early 1950s, Loyola University was a football powerhouse. But despite all of this history and bygone fierce rivalries with the likes of USC, UCLA and the University of Santa Clara, the word “football” is used exactly once on LMU’s Wikipedia page. Football is not mentioned at all on the LMU Lions’ Wiki sports page. But once upon a time, the Lions roared. Shortly after the University opened in 1929 on land donated by Fritz Burns, Harry Culver and their associates, the acting head coach of the 1929 champion Notre Dame
Al Duvall at LMU’s Sullivan Field in 1934. COURTESY DENISE DUVALL, GRANDDAUGHTER OF AL DUVALL.
Irish, Tom Lieb, began to build a new sports program at Loyola University. Between 1930 and 1939, Loyola was a dominant West Coast football team. The wildly popular Lions played most of their home games at the now extinct Gilmore Stadium, but as their fanbase grew, a great many games had to be played at the Los Angeles Coliseum to accommodate the attendance. The team’s practice
TheHTN.com
location, Sullivan Field, located at 80th Street and Loyola Boulevard, is now the home of the school’s soccer program. Sullivan Field was used to film parts of “Knute Rockne, All American” in 1940, starring Pat O’Brien and future United States President Ronald Reagan. Gilmore Stadium was featured in a 1934 Three Stooges short featuring a football game titled “Three Little Pigskins.” The film was co-written by Domer Griffin Jay, father of local resident Mike Jay (my father-in-law) and featured Lucille Ball and many players from the Loyola varsity team. For the football game, Moe’s jersey number is H2O2 (the abbreviation for hydrogen peroxide), Larry’s is 1/2 and Curly’s is a question mark. But in real life, things were not so humorous, as the 1930s were still an era of racial segregation and colleges had either all black or all white football teams. Jim Crow laws were in full force across America, and unjustifiable hardships impacted many collegiate and professional athletes. Between 1932 and 1936 Los Angeles local All American, Al Duvall, led the Lions defense. During his three seasons as the defensive end of the Loyola University Football Team, they posted a record of 19-10-
2, and produced 12 shutouts during the 1933, 1934 and 1935 seasons. This remarkable record alone is worthy of praise, but what’s even more significant is that Al Duvall was an African-American. Al Duvall was born in Texas and growing up in Los Angeles he excelled in sports. As a youth, he was statewide handball champion and captain of the Jefferson High School football team. With no offers made by his choice of colleges, USC, Duvall was accepted at Loyola University where he shined both academically and in sports: football, track and field. Unable to afford the streetcar fair to the area, Duvall often hitchhiked and walked his way to campus from his parent’s home near Exposition Park. In October 1934, the Texas-Tech Red Raiders traveled to Los Angeles, and were defeated by the Lions, 12-6. This marked the first time in history when a Texas white college competed against an African-American player. The event went unnoticed by most of the major newspapers, and despite coach Tom Lieb’s worries, Duvall praised the Texans for their clean play and good sportsmanship. (continued on next page)

A Look Back (continued) (continued from previous page) After graduating from Loyola, Duvall coached local high school teams and earned extra money acting, appearing in many films, including “While Thousands Cheered” (1940) and “Go West” (1940) with the Marx Brothers. When WWII broke out, Duvall enlisted in the Army/AirCorps and served as a Commander with the famed Tuskegee Airmen. When he returned from the war, he married, purchased a home, started a family and was appointed varsity line coach at Loyola. But the glory days of the team had ended when Tom Lieb resigned and moved to coach the Florida Gators. In February 1947, Loyola appointed former Lion (1930) Bill Sargent as head coach, but Sargent’s team posted an abysmal record, and on November 10, 1948, he resigned. This is when the story of Al Duvall
becomes truly remarkable. Football historians have recorded that Willie Jeffries became the first African-American head coach at a predominantly white school, Wichita State, in 1979. This is probably not true. Upon receiving the 1948 resignation of Bill Sargent, Loyola’s Board of Control named two assistant coaches, Bob Shaw and Al Duvall, as co-head coaches of the team. This made Al Duvall the first African-American head coach of a white college in America, a full 31 years before Jeffries. Look for part two of this amazing story in a future issue of the HomeTown News.

Of course, most people are going to have a few (or several) “cheat meals during the holiday season. Rather than focusing on “not eating this or “avoiding that, focus on putting more things into your diet that can fill you up and limit the likelihood of overindulgence. Some of the best items to increase in your diet are water, vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. One of my holiday fitness secrets is I eat a normal, healthy meal (a serving of lean protein, vegetables and some healthy fat such as avocado) before I head to a big holiday event. The protein and the vegetables fill me up before I reach the party. Once I am at the party, I do not specifically limit anything I eat, but I eat less heavy food since I am already partially satisfied by the “pre-eating. I will try a little of everything, but I eat much less of it than if I arrived at the party hungry. I have overheard people say “I am going to a party tonight where there is going to be lots of food. I am not going to eat much today to make up for all the food I am going to eat tonight. For most people, this approach will backfire. They will be so hungry when they arrive, they end up eating more high-calorie foods than they would
if they went to the party having eaten beforehand. In my fitness experience, most people do better eating regularly throughout the day rather than eating one huge meal. 3. Make time for friends. Most of us have family obligations during the holidays and these can be a great source of fun. For many, these obligations also bring pressure and “baggage. Make sure you also spend time with friends during December purely for the fun of it. Whether you have a special holiday coffee with your college roommate or take a walk with your neighbor, the holidays can be a great time to reconnect with close friends. This reconnection brings many things to our lives; strong social connections make us happier and I believe are a huge factor in our overall health and wellness. Use these three holiday survival tips to enjoy the season while still maintaining your fitness level. Before you start this or any fitness routine, consult your doctor. (continued from page 11) albums or sing songs that draw from old memories. The holidays can, for some, provoke feelings of intense sadness and loss. In some people the “holiday blues may represent worsening of ongoing depression. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a real condition that occurs when there is less sunlight during the short days of winter, even here in Southern California. For people who are confined to home due to limited mobility, this can be especially
challenging. Encouraging outdoor activity and making sure depression is treated is vitally important in these situations. Taking the time to connect to the seniors in our lives during the holidays can provided an added sense of meaning to the season for all. 100th birthday (continued) (continued from page 9) his life,” Mariellen. She was 22, so he lied to her about his age and they married. It was a union that lasted 76 years. Wild worked in Nevada surveying and designing roads until he was drafted in 1941. After the war he spent three decades working for the Civil Aviation Administration and the FAA in Seattle and Los Angeles. In 1963, he was selected by the State Department to head a mission to Turkey to set up their aviation system. During their four years abroad, the couple toured Eastern Europe and the Middle East extensively. When he returned to Los Angeles in 1968, Wild was named Chief of Airports for Nevada, Arizona and Southern California. He retired from the FAA in 1972 and opened his own consulting business. He designed airports and heliports and was often called to testify on aviation matters in legal cases. When he retired, the couple continued to indulge their wanderlust and visited over 130 countries. Wild has been a proud and honored member of the Rotary Club of Westchester and active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. “Dad lives very much in the
‘now,’” says his daughter Diane. When asked about his favorite invention of the last one hundred years, he points to his iPad in its well-worn case. It goes everywhere with him. His favorite decade? “This one!” he says. Perhaps the reason is that he is enjoying the notoriety and attention that comes with being a centenarian. This year, he’s been recognized by the Parks and Recreation Department, been an honoree on a float in the local Fourth of July parade and had the opportunity of a lifetime to act in a Dodge commercial celebrating the company’s one hundred year anniversary. Wild’s recipe for a good, long life? “Socialize, exercise, and have fun!” and he continues to follow his own advice. He says he’s never turned down an invitation. He’s at the Westchester Senior Center most weekdays for lunch and a game of pool. He attends church weekly and joined the Westchester Playa Village for their social events. He tries to get out every day, so perhaps you’ll see him around town. He’s the one with the signature red beret set at a jaunty angle, a twinkle in his eye and his iPad at the ready. Feel free to wish him a happy 100 years if you see him around town!

collecting fees from its more than forty hotel, retail and business members. The concert is a great way to kick-off the holiday season, while supporting local causes. Guests were asked to bring toys, and hundreds of games, dolls, action figures and stuffed animals were collected to benefit the Pacific Area Booster Club’s LAPD Toy Drive.
Runway at Playa Vista. The Urban Land Institute hosted a tour of Playa Vista’s Runway development on Thursday, November 20. Guests were able to get a behind the scenes look at the mixed-use development, which will feature 220,000 square feet of retail space, 420 residential units and 30,000 feet of office space. Representatives from Playa Vista/Brookfield Residential and developer Lincoln Properties were on hand after the tour for a discussion on their vision in creating the $260 million project, which will feature anchor tenants Whole Foods and Cinemark Theaters, expected to open in 2015. Other tenants that have been announced at The Runway include Starbucks, CVS, Mexican restaurant Sol Cocina and Italian eatery 800 Degrees. Runway at Playa Vista is the heart of Playa Vista’s Phase II development, and, when completed, will contain 2,800 residential units. Page 26 • December 2014
Proceeds from the concert went to benefit local nonprofits Airport Marina Counseling Service, EmpowerTech, Jefferson Elementary School and the Airport Police Cadet Program. The concert featured the nearly one hundred student Azusa Pacific University Choir and Orchestra, which delighted the crowd with Christmas
and holiday favorites, including Joy to the World, The Little Drummer Boy and Carol of the Bells. For the first time this year, guests were also invited to participate in the concert with a carol sing-a-long. Eagle Scouts. Erik Godlewski, Niko Klein and Stephen Luxford of Westchester Boy Scout Troop 915 were honored for earning the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor led by Scoutmaster Joseph Apodaca in November at St. Anastasia Church. All three boys, graduates of St. Anastasia School, developed and led Eagle Scout projects that benefited the local community. Godlewski’s project improved the storage capacity and efficiency of food distribution at the food pantry at St. Margaret’s Center in Lennox by constructing a shelving system. Klein upgraded the landscaping and created storage for the St. Anastasia School playground and lunch area as part of the new Pastors’ Plaza. Luxford’s project involved cleaning out and reorganizing storage in the St. Anastasia Parish office garage, refurbishing wrought-iron furniture and landscaping the surrounding grounds.
