In the 50 years since Westchester Del Rey Little League (WDRLL) was founded, the league and its field–for many people an extension of their own backyard–has built community, friendships and a tradition that is spanning generations. When the first softball is thrown over home base at the Westchester Del Rey Little League’s (WDRLL) Opening Ceremony on February 24, it will mark the organization’s 50th anniversary season. Not only is it a huge milestone for the beloved sports institution, it is also a moment of celebration for all local sports fans– especially the women and girls it has served for the past five decades. WDRLL was founded by Mary Ann and Kent Mace in 1974, with approximately 50 girls playing softball that first season. Today, the league has grown to more than 300 players on 27 teams, with ages ranging from 4 to 16. Over the years, the league has added co-ed tee ball as well, and recently announced its expansion to include the communities of El Segundo and Manhattan Beach, to provide even more opportunities to play ball. Talk to any volunteer, coach or

WDRLL supporter, and you’ll often find they have a long history with the league that can go back decades. Current league President Jim Evans started as a softball coach for his daughters’ teams and then became a board member. His wife even played on the 1978 WDRLL All Star team! Recently retired from his fruitful career in human resources, he happily says his complete focus is now on creating a place where all the league’s athletes can thrive and have a memorable experience. “It’s all about the girls,” says Jim, who describes his responsibility as threefold. “The first priority is kids. Because I tell the parents, it’s not kids with an apostrophe ‘s,’ it’s kids first as in all the kids. It’s really thinking about what’s in the best interest of the girls.” His second priority is building community. But Jim knows that (continued on page 16)

Donations sought for Corsages and Cufflinks events. Seeing a need to help parents and students offset the cost of prom season, local event planning business Katie’s Kreations Events is hosting its second annual “Corsages and Cufflinks” in Westchester next month. Owner Aisha Harris is looking for the community’s help with donations of formal wear— dresses, gowns, suits, purses, slacks, blazers and accessories—so students can “shop” during the complimentary experience without the worry of a price tag. Donation boxes are available at Lily Love Boutique (8125 W. Manchester Ave. #B in Playa del Rey) and the Westchester Family YMCA (8015 S. Sepulveda Blvd. in Westchester) through February 28. Corsages and Cufflinks will be held on March 9, and is open to high school seniors that attend a local high school, including Westchester High, St. Bernard, WISH Academy and Venice High School. Drollinger Properties and Grass Roots Neighbors are helping sponsor the event. For more information on donating or attending the event, please email katieskreationsevents@yahoo.com.

The shop is one of two locations collecting donations for an upcoming event where students can peruse complimentary prom gear. Harris, a mother of a high school student at Venice, hopes the event will help students and their families save funds that can be used toward college. Last year, thanks to the community’s support, she was able to collect more than 200 dresses.

Cantalini’s owner, Lisa Schwab, is grateful for the community’s support and all of the diners who have stepped up to support the restaurant’s goal of raising $100,000.

LAWA relaunches Residential Sound Insulation Program. During Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) initial Residential Sound Insulation Program (RSI) from 1997 to 2014, more than 7,000 Westchester and Playa del Rey homes qualified to receive new doors and windows to help cut down on noise from the airport. Now LAWA has reopened the program based on the latest FAAapproved noise exposure contour maps. Homes within the program

boundary with a noise level of 45 decibels or higher that meet certain criteria may participate in the program, which aims to improve interior noise levels by at least 5 decibels. Homeowners that declined to participate in the program previously can now participate if they qualify. To check eligibility, visit lawa.org and search “LAX Sound Insulation Program.” There residents can enter their address to see if they qualify and then start the application process.

Save the date for Spring Rummage Sale. The Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey is readying to hold a spring cleaning rummage sale on March 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. to noon. Cantalini’s nears fundraising goal thanks to community support. For the last 24 years, Cantalini’s Salerno Beach Restaurant has been serving up delicious pasta and homemade ravioli to locals and visitors alike, making it an important part of the fabric of Playa del Rey. Behind the scenes, owner Lisa Schwab, has been a huge supporter of the community, volunteering her time–and food–to support numerous community organizations. While running a business is never easy, the last few years have been especially challenging, and now the woman behind Cantalini’s, who is usually the one being asked for help, is looking for a little community support instead! With the help of community members, the restaurant has recently raised more than $90,000, with an ultimate goal to raise $100,000 by February 4. Schwab says that the funds will give the restaurant a muchneeded infusion to make some updates (including building a permanent outdoor patio) and keep the eatery serving up plates of gnocchi for years to come! Public Safety Committee, LAPD Address Recent Crime Wave in NCWP Area

By Theresa Torrance, NCWP Board Member

On Tuesday, January 23, the Public Safety Committee of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa held its first meeting of the New Year. Committee Chair John Logsdon invited LAPD Pacific Division Captain Applegate, our area Senior Lead Officers Pinell and Perez, other LAPD officers and burglary detectives, to address the issue of increasing crime in Westchester and Playa del Rey. The hot topic of the night was the staggering number of residential burglaries as well as the recent car break-ins of 51 vehicles in the early morning hours of January 20. The crime streak began in the area between 80th and 85th street and Loyola as well as the areas of 80th and Berger, 81st and Rayford and 80th and Park Hill, and they believe it occurred over a period of roughly six hours between 12:45-7a.m. based on some eyewitness accounts. The meeting started off with Captain Applegate introducing our Senior Lead and other attending officers, and Detective Lieutenant Samuel Rhone introducing some of the burglary detectives who are handling the investigations. A considerable amount of time was dedicated to providing crime stats, the status of pending investigations, and tips for the community to protect themselves and their property. LAPD Detective Robyn Salazar provided crime stats for the period of October through December 2023, reporting there were 91 burglaries between October and December of 2023 in Westchester/Playa del Rey; 75 of them were home burglaries and the remainder commercial. She also made it a point to advise that there is a significant difference between a “burglary” and a “robbery;” – a burglary is when someone enters your property and commits a felony by stealing your personal property, while a robbery is when there is a threat or harm to a person in order to take something from them. Some important take-aways and advice from Detective Salazar included: • Most of the burglaries happened on Mondays and Tuesdays between noon-8pm, and are rear entry with the suspects smashing sliding glass doors or windows. • She advised the public to NOT touch anything if they are the victim of a burglary, as it taints any analysis of

fingerprints and DNA. Unfortunately the wait for the crime scene analysis can take several hours and the test results can take anywhere between 3-6 months. • Side gates are definitely a deterrent. Although criminals sometimes will hop gates, most prefer easy targets of an accessible side yard. Homes with high vegetation are sometimes targeted so good to have motion detection lighting around your home and prune vegetation. • CALL 911 if you hear anything like breaking glass at your neighbors house, or if you see a group of people in a car wearing hoodies and masks. Do not wait. • Lock your doors and windows even when you are at home. • Use double paned glass on windows and doors if possible. • Use an audible alarm and make sure to always set it when leaving the house. • Consider adding glass break sensors to your home alarm system. • Dogs are also a good deterrent. LAPD Detective Levesque (310-482-6367 • 35094@ lapd.online), who is in charge of the investigation for the 51 car break-ins, said he has spoken to many of the neighbors trying to gather information, including camera footage, and that although he has received footage to date, it is grainy and tough to clearly see the criminals but he said they appear to be between the ages of 16-20 and were breaking into cars that were parked on the street. During public comment on this agenda item, community member and NCWP board member Debra Huston read a statement on behalf of a resident who could not attend the meeting but lives in the area where the car break-ins occurred, and she encapsulated the magnitude of the crime spree based on what she saw when she said, “It was like an act of terrorism due to the scale of damage caused.” Some take-aways and advice from Detective Levesque included: • If you can, park your car in your garage, or at least your driveway. All of the cars in this 51 car break-in streak were parked on the street. • Always lock your vehicle if parked outside. • It is best not to leave anything in your car, but if you must, hide them from plain sight. Committee member Chip Mallek brought up the

importance and necessity of Neighborhood Watch programs throughout our community as it is the best first line of defense when neighbors know each other, know each other’s schedules/patterns and have each other’s contact information. Neighborhood Watch street signs can also be requested and installed by the City Council office. For those who want to create a Watch on their block, you may contact our Senior Lead Officers at the emails contained at the bottom of this article for some helpful tips to create and maintain a Watch group. Dylan Strickland, CD11’s Field Deputy for the area, advised that the Council Office is exploring and researching the possibility of Real Time Crime Centers. In short, the idea would set up infrastructure within the Police Department that allows LAPD to create a link between their internal systems and cameras of local residents, businesses, and willing community members. Several attendees and committee members expressed frustration over the RV dwellers that continue to reside in the municipal parking lot and pressed for their removal. Dylan wrapped up his update with a discussion about the addition of the LAPD Circle Team – an initiative from Mayor Karen Bass’s office that is essentially an LAPD subgroup, responding to non-violent LAPD calls largely centered around mental health concerns and others experiencing crisis. The evening ended with a brief presentation from head of Security at Otis College, Steve McQueen, mainly to address and speak about the challenges of the unregulated RV encampment on Loyola next to the campus. Although there has not been much crime to report, the school gets many calls from concerned and frustrated parents about the issue. He advised that the vehicle dwellers refuse to move but they are working with the Councilmember’s office on the issue. Anastasia Olmos from NBC news was present at the meeting to report on the incidents, concern in the community and action being taken by LAPD. MEET AUTHOR & JOURNALIST

Journalism is in crisis, but the solution is right in front of us. It’s no secret that news outlets are struggling to maintain their audience, and journalism jobs are being cut to accommodate tighter and tighter budgets–all while the public regularly falls prey to “fake news.” Today, news consumers have lost trust in journalism. They sense, rightly, they aren’t getting the whole story.

5 QUESTIONS WITH... Ahmanise Sanati ROBIN Morgan ZACHA Prior to her role working with the school district, Ahmanise spent years working in the L.A. County jail system, first as an intern and then as a mental health clinical supervisor at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility. While many things weighed on her during her time there, one thing was painfully obvious to the philosophy major and avid reader: there was a major shortage of books and no libraries. Confident this was an area where she could make a measurable impact, she began bringing in reading materials from her collection and from the local “Buy Nothing” groups, and they’d be borrowed as quickly as they were brought in. “After all these years, I thought, ‘I should do something about this, and I could do something about this,” said Ahmanise. “There’s a human being behind this situation.”

Closer to home, Ahmanise’s efforts have impressed the Westchester Rotary Club, which recently announced they will be honoring her as their 2024 Citizen of the Year at a fundraiser on Saturday, March 23 at the Flight Path Museum. For the club, which has held an annual book sale for the last 60 years, the decision to recognize Ahmanise for her work promoting literacy and making a difference in the community was an easy one.

We recently sat down with Ahmanise and asked her to share her thoughts, so here is “5 Questions With... Ahmanise!”

What’s one local spot you couldn’t live without?

AND A PRIVILEGE TO RAISE MY KIDS HERE. PLAYA DEL REY IS A SPECIAL PLACE.

“I am so humbled to be honored,” said Ahmanise. “I really feel like the club represents the community, and this is a win for everything I’ve been involved with. I feel so touched that people are responding to and like what I’m doing!”

What’s your perfect day in Westchester/Playa look like?

“ IT’S SUCH A GIFT

Once she began shining a light on the lack of reading materials and campaigning for more access to books, she gained attention from local media and the L.A. County Supervisors. In February of last year, a motion was approved to add shelving and an officially structured program, and now all L.A. County libraries can accept donations for “Books for Jails” in an effort to promote literacy, education and mental health.

Playa del Rey’s Ahmanise Sanati Morgan is full of energy and determination to make the world a better place. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker overseeing seven schools in LAUSD, she helps connect students to services like counseling and housing, and as a super volunteer with groups like Grass Roots Neighbors, Westside Pacific Villages and the Westchester Family YMCA, she dedicates her time advocating for society’s most vulnerable populations.

Because we are so active–between work, school, volunteering and two club sports–I especially appreciate the days of rest and relaxation. So, it would be a day with nothing on the calendar to start. Then it would go like this: meditate, jog/walk with my husband while the kids scooter to the beach and then have a picnic together. If it’s that time of year, we’d do some sand sledding. When we finish, I’d take the kids to The Book Jewel (love them!), and since we’re mostly plant-based, I’d pick up some dinner at Hart House for the whole family. I’d also introduce the kids to some of my favorite tunes for the drive home, and then we’d park it at home to continue the fun! Westchester Pharmacy! For a few years now, they have been keeping my family healthy, and we literally and metaphorically cannot live without them! Pharmacist Erin Cueto and the whole team are amazing!

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering with local groups?

The people I get to meet in service of others are by far the best thing about this work. I believe that most people want this world to be better. However, meeting those who actually “do the work” has led me to find my people…which is priceless.

Is there any business or organization you’d like to give a shout out to?

Not having family nearby has given me the opportunity to expand my family a bit differently. Since we joined the Westchester Family YMCA and the Westchester Rec Center, we have found our family! Also, to see how kind and loving everyone has been with my children is perhaps one of the most meaningful gifts a mother could witness. So, to all of my extended family in Westchester, especially at the Y and Rec Center, I am so grateful.

If you were a member of the city council what issue would you want to tackle?

Housing. Every day, I add another unsheltered family to my caseload. So, while many people think of the encampments, I think of my students and their families. It’s very personal to me, and when I think of the fact that their basic needs are not being met, I realize how our society has failed them. They deserve housing, first and foremost, and I know we can do better.

(continued from page 4) community support for WDRLL wouldn’t already be so strong without the efforts of the smart, well-connected people who came before him. “You know the old saying, ‘You stand on the shoulders of those who came before?’ There are people who did some phenomenal things with this league, so I get the chance to stand on their shoulders and then expand that footprint,” he says. Of course, some of those WDRLL superstars over the years have included the Mace family and Carl Nielsen, the namesakes for the league’s field and park, as well as the hundreds of unsung heroes who have helped the organization throughout its history with their time, talent and treasure. Jim’s third priority is ensuring that girls’ softball is a positive experience. “How can the girls learn and enjoy the game of softball? It’s about kicking in the fundamentals and building their skills, but making sure they’re having fun. It does no good to have someone coming out there and just playing a sport. With my own kids, the question I always asked them after every game was, ‘Did you have fun?’ And if they’re not having fun, I say don’t do it anymore.” Luckily, it seems that most former WDRLL players not only have fond memories of the league, but are also sharing their love for softball with the next generation. Erin Hennessey Chavez is one of those people who grew up in Westchester and looks back at her time playing softball with a big smile. Growing up, Erin adored baseball, so she started off her sports career with the Westchester Little League–which was all boys. At age 13 though, she made the switch to the community’s softball league. “Softball turned out to be more fun for me,” said Erin, who played catcher and third base. “I loved it and played from age 13 all the way up to 18. I was on the All Star softball team at 17, and I went to the Little League World Series in Kalamazoo, Michigan!” Although her team didn’t end up winning, it was an amazing experience that cemented her—and her family’s— dedication to WDRLL. Her daughter, Avery, 18, is a league alumna, and Sienna, 15, is in the league’s Junior Division where she plays shortstop, second base and outfield. A true family affair, Erin’s father, Mark Hennessey, spent years volunteering to mow the park’s 6.2 acres; her husband, Carlos Chavez, is a Junior Division coach; and her nephew, Rio, just started with the league playing tee ball. Oh, and her mom, Sandi, loves to root the family on from the sidelines! For former WDRLL players Kamyle Glover and Sabrina Tisdom, it’s all about giving back to the softball community that provided such an impactful

experience. The women became lifelong friends while playing with the league and went on to play in high school and college. “My experience has been pretty amazing, honestly,” says Sabrina. “We went to the World Series twice and were runners-up both times. The first time to Puerto Rico, the second time to Manila, Philippines.” Their softball skills even earned them both college scholarships. Now the two are giving back by coaching for the league and are having a blast.

Ultimately, it goes beyond softball. We’re teaching life skills, things like discipline, things that they take home. “Kamyle and I say all the time, ‘We don’t have kids on the team, so we do this solely because we love it,” says Sabrina. “I just enjoy seeing these kids grow and get better. For example, last year we had a completely new squad of girls that had never played before, and we ended up winning first place! So, I do it because of that. I do it just to give back those skills.” But playing in a league like WDRLL is about more than just stats or how many home runs you can hit. After all, the league puts a premium on promoting the virtues of character, courage and loyalty. “Ultimately, it goes beyond softball. We’re teaching life skills, things like discipline, things that they take home,” said Sabrina. “We have parents that tell

us, ‘Oh my goodness, I couldn’t get her to listen to me, and then she started playing with you guys and now she’s a whole new girl at home.’” Kamyle agrees that seeing her players grow confidence is super rewarding. “For them to be able to just do stuff with no fear is great. I tell them, the game is 99 percent failure. You’re going to succeed once, but you’re going to fail a lot, but it’s how you fail,” said Kamyle. “How do you respond to that? Did you just dig yourself a hole, or are you going to use that experience to learn? It’s about all that,” she says. Courtney O’Donoghue’s history with the league goes back more than 30 years. She’s grateful for how the league has grown, and that Nielsen Park has become a neighborhood hub for so many looking to cheer on their family, connect with neighbors and make memories that last a lifetime. Back when she played softball, the league didn’t have all the nice amenities it does today. “I played softball in this league from age 9 to 12, and we played at Westchester Park while they were building the new field. In my last year of playing, we moved to Nielsen Park. I remember it opening and having a dirt parking lot. Now it’s paved! It was so exciting because we knew that all these people had worked really hard over the years to save up the money, get the grants and get the space. Having our own field is really amazing,” says Courtney. These days, she’s back on the field a lot, as her daughter, Addison, 14, plays first base in the Junior Division. You’ll often find her and her whole softballloving family behind home plate ready to make some noise as Addison tags someone out or scores a run. She says playing softball helps teach a lot of lessons, especially confidence. “Last year, Addison made the All Star team and to see her become a leader on the field–help other kids, show them

how to throw the ball and give them a pep talk when they get to the plate–it’s a big moment for me as a parent to watch my child become a leader on the field. It’s very exciting to watch,” says Courtney. While a golden anniversary is a huge milestone, Jim continues to build on the past and look to the future for what the league and all its supporters and volunteers can accomplish. “Opening Day is always a very positive, fun experience for everyone who attends,” says Jim. “Not only are we celebrating 50 years, but it’s also an opportunity to look ahead and inspire our players to keep it going another 50 for the next generation of players. We should all be so lucky!”

Join WDRLL in celebrating the kick-off to its 50th anniversary season on Saturday, February 24. Special guests include Olympian Natasha Watley and Councilwoman Traci Park. There will also be a group photo where players will form a giant 5-0 and other festivities. Follow facebook.com/WDRLL or visit wdrll.org to learn more. Limited spaces are still available for the 2024 season.

Mary Ellen Cassman, nee Mary Ellen Gill, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024. She left exactly as she wanted–with family, in her Westchester home where she lived for more than 65 years. She grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the second of two children born to H. Walter Gill and Mary (Leinbach) Gill. She adored her parents and older brother, Norman. In her youth, she developed lifelong passions for riding ocean waves and writing. An excellent student, she graduated from Wellesley College near Boston, majoring in philosophy. When the U.S. entered World War II during her sophomore year, Mary Ellen joined the Red Cross as a hospital volunteer. After college graduation in 1944, Mary Ellen took on various jobs, including a stint as an Executive Assistant at IBM in New York City. She also ventured out to Stanford University to work as a Dormitory Resident Assistant for a year and fell in love with California. Mary Ellen and Alan Cassman were childhood friends. The story goes that Alan carried Mary Ellen’s books home from school in third grade. A high school photograph shows the two of them holding hands when he was President and she was Secretary of their senior class. But they did not become romantically involved until after Alan returned from the war. They married on October 15, 1948, and immediately drove across the country to California, landing in Los Angeles. Alan joined a downtown law firm. Mary Ellen took a job with the Girl Scouts of America. In April 1950, Mary Ellen gave birth to Ken, and she and Alan moved to Westchester to be nearer to the beach. In 1951, Alan opened his own law practice. Then came two more children–Joan in 1952 and Ted in 1955. During the 1950s and 60s Mary Ellen was the primary home parent for her three children, but made time for employment and a legacy of community service. She was a

photographer for the local newspaper, the President of the Cowan Avenue P.T.A., a Girl Scout leader, the manager of Pat Russell’s successful campaigns for the L.A. City Council, and a co-founder of the Westchester Family YMCA and the Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS). In the early 1970s, Mary Ellen obtained her teaching credential, and for a time, worked as a substitute English teacher at Orville Wright Junior High School. Then at a critical time in AMCS’ development, she agreed to become its first full-time Executive Director. Under Mary Ellen’s leadership over 19 years, AMCS grew to become the valuable community resource it remains to this day. Over the last 30 years, Mary Ellen continued to serve as a member, and at times, the President of both the YMCA and AMCS boards. Mary Ellen’s commitment to her community and society at large was surpassed only by her devotion to Alan and her family. Mary Ellen’s and Alan’s deep and abiding love was a romance for the ages. They shared an exceptional partnership and supported each other in all of their civic activities. They wrote poems to each other on special occasions and sang in harmony. Together, and by example, they inspired those around them to live life fully, to enjoy the blessings of each day, and to give back. Mary Ellen is survived by her three children–Ken, Joan and Ted–seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial celebration service will be held at the Westchester Family YMCA on Sunday, February 25 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who are inclined, to please make a donation to the Westchester Family YMCA or the Airport Marina Counseling Service in Mary Ellen’s honor. Take the right steps to improve your balance

By Jeff Blair

Opinion: Balance is defined as “physical equilibrium” and the ability to remain upright and steady. Balance can be stationary (static) or while moving (dynamic). Improving balance is one of the most common goals I hear from personal training clients. Almost everyone seems to want to improve their balance. Let’s take the example of a hypothetical client, “Amy.” Amy noticed her balance seriously declined after she turned 50. Her dad told her, “That is just the way it goes once you get to a certain age.” Her doctor disagreed and told her that balance could be improved with training. Amy felt confused but set up an appointment with her doctor to discuss options. Amy’s doctor finds she does not have any medical condition causing her balance issues. The doctor encourages her to act now by improving strength, increasing power and performing balance-specific exercises. The doctor also provides Amy with some education on the importance of balance. The doctor tells Amy that after 50

years old, people lose strength at a rate of about two percent per year. Those over 65 will experience an even faster rate of strength loss. This loss of strength can make maintaining physical equilibrium difficult while both standing still and moving. Amy realizes she has lost quite a bit of strength since her 30s. While her slow loss of balance is frustrating, Amy is concerned that her balance will become a major problem if she does not do something now. Amy tells the doctor her mom recently fell and fractured her hip. The doctor tells Amy she is smart to be thinking about the long-term. Slowing or stopping this strength loss can be the first step in improving balance. Amy’s doctor recommends strength training twice per week, as this number is supported by several studies. Amy learns leg strength is most important for balance as legs provide a base of support for the human body. However, the entire body contributes to balance. Back muscles, core/stomach muscles and hip muscles all help us stay stable both when stationary and moving. The doctor recommends Amy begin a full-body strength training program.

He also tells her stopping the steady loss of strength can make a huge difference in her quality of life when the alternative is losing two percent or more of strength each year. Amy’s doctor also tells her she can also expect to increase her strength as long as she remains consistent with her workouts. The doctor emphasizes consistency over intensity as she starts. Other advice includes finding a way to work out consistently, increasing the weight over time, and not rushing the process. The doctor encourages Amy to hire a trainer or find some other way to get into a consistent routine. Power training is the second strategy the doctor recommends for improving balance. Power training adds speed to strength training. Lifting a weight slightly faster can improve nervous system efficiency and this can improve balance. Power training can also improve coordination. Power training does not need to be extreme or dangerous. Moving a weight just 10 percent faster than normal can be a great power training starting point. The third recommended strategy for improving balance is to perform

balance-specific exercises. These exercises can include single-leg stands for 15 to 30 seconds, single-leg deadlifts and bicep curls performed on one leg. Single-leg training can be a great way to get stronger and perform balance-specific exercises at the same time. The doctor tells Amy to be patient with these exercises. She may feel shaky at first but over time she can expect improvement. (continued on next page)

Be kind to yourself and others By Fay Craton

Opinion: A song I have always loved is “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. It starts with: “When you’re weary Feeling small When tears are in your eyes I’ll dry them all I’m on your side Oh, when times get rough and friends just can’t be found Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down” We all experience times when we are sad and feeling down. Especially during these moments, some kindness helps. Kindness can come from a friend texting to see how you are doing. At other times, kindness comes from a person not known to you. An example I recently experienced was from a grocery delivery person showing kindness to me. Rain was coming down hard, and he did not want to leave my groceries on my front porch where they would get wet. Instead, he patiently waited until I opened the front door to hand me my items in a way I could handle them in a caring manner. And, yes, I did go online and increase his tip! His kindness made a pleasant difference in my life. Our words and actions connect us with others. The attitude with which we navigate life makes a difference to people we encounter–whether they are strangers or significant others. On the other hand, the lack of kindness also changes how life is experienced. Many years ago, I attended a meeting where a group activity was about peace. A man disrupted the group claiming peace is boring and he liked conflict. His attitude resulted in the group members being uncomfortable. The goal of the meeting was to connect individuals who were supporting another person’s goal of starting a nonprofit. The desired connection did not happen. Simon and Garfunkel sang, “When you’re on the street When evening falls so hard I will comfort you I’ll take your part

Oh, when darkness comes And pain is all around Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down” Sometimes, we are faced with people who do not care about connections and how others feel. They can be rude, demanding or even demeaning. Wherever you are when you encounter a situation like this—at home, shopping, at work, running errands, etc.–it can feel lonely and dark. It hurts. When the pain is great, it can be difficult to reach out to others to either help them or to receive help. It is also at this point that reaching out is most important. It is that internal pain causing many to lash out in anger, to use substances, or cram food in their mouths, in the hope it will numb the pain. Ask yourself, how can I be kind to myself? Then, consider the people around you. Is there some small act of kindness you can share? Kindness may be what keeps you and other people going. The feelings evoked by kindness grow each time it is expressed. Simon and Garfunkel sang, “Sail on silver girl Sail on by Your time has come to shine All your dreams are on their way See how they shine Oh, if you need a friend I’m sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind” My wish for you is to experience and share kindness. In this way, you will be positioned to connect with others in ways that empower both you and them. Kindness, caring and human connection steer us to healing pain and healing emptiness. Feeling self-empathy and empathy for others are stepping stones to achieving a life of purpose and love. WESTCHESTER/PLAYA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Westchester Pioneer Series: William H. Hannon By Cozette Vergari

Born in 1913, native Angeleno William H. Hannon dedicated his life to giving back to his community. His father, a rancher, and his mother, a homemaker, instilled in him a love of the history of the region. Upon graduation from Loyola High School in 1933, Hannon had his heart set on attending Loyola University of Los Angeles, which had just opened their campus in 1930 in a remote rural area of the City of Los Angeles, which would become Westchester. However, the money for such a college education was not something Hannon’s parents could afford. That did not dissuade him. With the support of his mother, he proposed an arrangement to the President of Loyola University. Hannon promised that if he was accepted by the university for his undergraduate studies, upon graduation and finding employment, he would pay his debt back in full. That promise, which began with a handshake, was the beginning of a lifelong dedication to, and support of, his alma mater. Upon graduation from Loyola University, Hannon served as an intelligence officer in the army. Shortly thereafter in 1937, he was offered a job by Fritz B. Burns on

the sales team of Marlow-Burns & Company. He had met Burns at the beach in Playa del Rey while he was a student. That friendship and business relationship would last for more than 40 years. He quickly became the Sales Manager for the commercial and residential properties for the Westchester and Playa del Rey communities. Together, they subdivided thousands of acres in Westchester, then built and sold homes to veterans returning from World War II. He served on the board of directors of the Fritz B. Burns Foundation, both as an officer and a director, as well as president, from 1978 until 1994. Hannon also became a major partner in the development of several other industrial parks, hotels and shopping centers in the Los Angeles region. Hannon continued in the real estate business independently and had an office in Playa del Rey. He was known as an innovator for his creative thinking and constantly dictating and/ or notating his ideas. In 1983, Hannon forged his own philanthropy by founding the William H. Hannon Foundation. Over the years, the Hannon Foundation has supported many Catholic schools, missions and hospitals, as well as numerous other public and

private nonprofit organizations in Southern California. The foundation continues to generously support community projects and organizations within the Westchester and Playa del Rey area. Hannon was also very proud to be named a Knight of St. Gregory and to receive the 1994 Cardinal’s Award Hannon (second from right) at the Westchester Chamber in the from the leader of the 1960s. This month, discover Westchester/Playa’s public art scene! These one-of-a-kind murals not only add bright pops of colors to otherwise beige walls, but also help tell the community’s history, make great backdrops for photos and are imaginative ways to make a little creative placemaking. Next time you’re walking or driving through the community, take a longer look at some of our favorite public art installations in the area: 1. “Into the Blue” was unveiled in the spring of 2022 at the LAX Police facility located on the northeast corner of Westchester Parkway and Loyola Blvd. The mural is an impressive 105-feet wide by 10-feet high and was created by Los Angeles artist Francisco Letelier in collaboration with Marybeth Fama. The artwork features a variety of colorful scenes that highlight the rich history of the area, including Rancho La Ballona; traveling and native flora and fauna. 2. “Downtown Playa” by Charlie Carroll, John Park and Aaron Rosenstock pays tributes to PdR landmarks of past and present. The mural is located on what is currently a real estate office at 323 Culver Blvd. in Playa del Rey. 3. The community’s newest mural, “Dream Big,” adorns the walls outside the Westchester Family YMCA and encourages viewers to “reflect on their passions and potential.” The mural was created by Mobile Mural Lab artists David Russell, Renee Fox and Hunter Culberson with help from the YMCA Mural Task Force members and teens. In the background, the “Welcome to Westchester” mural looms large and can even be seen from the runway at LAX! 5. Head to the Westchester Triangle to view this mural paying tribute to writer and poet Maya Angelou that took three days to complete by Westchester artist and professor David Russell. 6. Next time you pick up snacks at 7-Eleven on Sepulveda in Westchester, enjoy the vibrant artwork featuring a giant parrot and hummingbird!

Featuring the shout-out to the neighborhood, “Oh Thank Heaven for Westchester,” it’s also a nod to one of the convenience store’s memorable slogans. The mural was created by local artist Ernest Doty who is known for his bold, distinctive style often featuring birds. 7. In Westchester’s most decorative alleyway, you’ll find four distinct mural panels, including one depicting some of the area’s most recognizable landmarks like the Theme Building, the Loyola Theater, Randy’s Donuts and more. The paintings, located along 8636 Sepulveda Blvd., were created by Otis students in the Creative Action Program, led by David Russell.
