The YMCA is back! After most of its programming was put on pause due to the pandemic, on June 15 the community hub fully reopened its doors for members who were ready to get back to exercising on the treadmills, swim lessons, group classes and so much more. While the pandemic understandably caused a drop in membership, the Y’s Reimagining Taskforce is ready to take the nearly 70-year-old neighborhood institution to the next level with more programs and offerings, while making sure the Y is always mindful of serving its community. Get the scoop on this month’s spotlight by reading below and hear from YMCA Senior Executive Director John Loussararian.
organizations, groups or people you’d like to give a shout out to? A. That is absolutely correct, and we have too many partners and supporters to adequately list! First and foremost, a huge shout out to our members who kept their memberships active despite our closure as a contribution toward our emergency COVID response fund. We couldn’t have responded to our communities‘ needs without your support–thank you! We are also extremely grateful for our relationship with: the Inglewood Unified School District, which allowed us to provide distance-learning and preand post-school daycare to students from 85 families during this past school year; Aerospace Corporation, with whom we’ve partnered to bring STEM programming to our middle school summer day camp curriculum; and Clark Construction, who helped us provide construction career orientations. And, we’d be remiss to not recognize our most generous donors who have supported the Y since our beginning, including the Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation, Bob Abernethy, and the William H. Hannon Foundation, all of whom contributed toward our COVID response efforts.
Q. The YMCA fully reopened recently after more than a year of most of its regular programming being paused. How has the last year impacted the Y? A. The closure caused our active membership to fall by 81 percent, but we were able to forge new partnerships as we responded to immediate needs in the community. The benefits from those partnerships will outlast the challenges that the membership decline presents. Being forced to pivot due to COVID-19 restrictions amplified the need for us to re-imagine our Y’s strategic focus, since our programming has always been based around responding to community needs. A “Reimagining the Y Task Force” was formed and an expanded list of priorities came about as a result. Q. During the last few months, the Y has implemented a lot of new services and community outreach programs, like the Painted Pantry Project, blood drives and free produce distribution. Will these continue now that the Y has fully reopened? A. To accommodate the increasing numbers of our returning members, we’ve discontinued the shower program, but will continue with our community pantry, blood drives and produce distributions (Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Y’s Annex), as long as the need exists and our partners in those programs are able to participate. In addition, we’ve been able to begin offering swimming instructions to students participating in our remote learning program and look forward to continuing our Youth in Government led “Finding Common Ground” webinar series, bringing back traditionally popular programming such as the Adventure Guides, family/ summer camps, youth sports leagues, and expanding on the number of Page 4 • July 2021

exercise classes available now. Finally, we also look forward to relaunching our school-based Health & Wellbeing programs including youth yoga, which we provided pre-pandemic at 11 partnering schools, serving more than 3,900 students on school days. Q. Membership has understandably declined during this time. What is your plan for bringing people back and gaining new members? What are some of the Y’s goals for the year? A. We’ve managed to regain more than 42 percent of our pre-COVID
membership since restrictions began being lifted in May, and as we are able to continue to bring back staff and programming relevant to them, additional members are returning. Our goals are to continue to add back programming as we are able, to convert program participants into full memberships and to attract new members through inperson community outreach and communications. Q. I know the YMCA works with a lot of community partners to fulfill its mission. Are there any
Q. Is there anything else the community should know about the Westchester Family YMCA that you’d like to share? A. While health and wellbeing are central to our core mission, the YMCA is much more than a gym and swim. We have identified key needs in our community, including senior support, learning recovery, food insecurity, drowning prevention and equity and inclusion, and we will continue focusing on them through our partnerships and programming moving forward. We encourage everyone to come by for a visit, or to give us a try. Our pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and workout facilities are open and available, and we are adding additional programming options regularly. We have an app for class sign-ups, as well as court/pool reservations, and we look forward to seeing you there! Joining the Y is like joining a family, and a strong Y is great for the community. It’s Westchester Team Challenge time! Get ready for the high fives! The Westchester Team Challenge (WTC) is back, and you’re invited to create a team for a day of friendly competition, neighborhood spirit and field games. The WTC was started in 2019 by longtime Westchester residents Grant Francis and Amy Frelinger as a way to promote community, while getting some fresh air and exercise! After taking a pause last year, organizers are excited to be hosting the second annual event this summer. The WTC is scheduled for Saturday, August 7 and will be held at Loyola Marymount University’s Drollinger Field. The goal is to gather 10 teams of 10 people–businesses, nonprofit organizations, clubs, friends, neighbors–who will compete in a morning of field day games like the three-legged race, football toss, bocce ball and more. The winners will receive bragging rights for the year, a trophy and will have their pictures published in the September issue of the HTN. All net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association, which helps beautify the community. For more information and to register a team, please visit westchestercateamchallenge.com or email westchestercateamchallenge@ gmail.com. Head to Qargo for coffee and croissants. This is Qargo Coffee’s first location in Los Angeles, and it’s a family business run by partners Dr. Ashis Mukherjee, Kingshuk Mukherjee and Kushal Mukherjee. Qargo serves coffee sourced by world-renowned producer, Lavazza, and they want to become the neighborhood destination for hot and cold beverages, as well as buttery croissants and other tasty pastries. “Our main goal was to create a family business. Each of us brings different skills and experiences to managing a business and we loved the quality and taste of the Lavazza
coffee product. Qargo Coffee was a great fit for us. We’re proud members of this community, and we’re especially proud to operate a local hospitality-oriented business here,” said Kingshuk Mukherjee. So far they’ve gotten great feedback from the community, said Mukherjee, and they plan on adding more vegan and gluten-free options to the menu. Check out Qargo Coffee at 8601 Lincoln Blvd. in Westchester. Mental Health Guild readies to host vintage treasures sale. The Westchester Mental Health Guild is hosting a “Vintage Treasures and Memorabilia” sale on Saturday,
July 17 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. All the proceeds will benefit Airport Marina Counseling Service and the sale will take place at 7839 Henefer Ave. in Westchester. Items have been donated for sale by members and include antique glassware, crystal bowls, Lladro and Hummel figurines and other collectible items. The Guild is a nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of fundraising to support AMCS. During the pandemic, they’ve found new ways to raise funds, including virtual events and takeout dinners. AMCS is located at 7891 La Tijera Blvd. in Westchester and provides affordable mental health counseling to the community, while also training therapists. The clinic is currently undergoing renovations to get ready to welcome back clients for in-person appointments. Fireworks in Marina del Rey. The Marina is hosting fireworks again this year on the Fourth of July, but if you’re planning on viewing them at Burton Chace Park, you’ll need to plan ahead. Fireworks will kick off at 9 p.m. and will last about 10 minutes. Organizers are recommending arriving in the area as early as 1
p.m. and staying in the Marina to avoid traffic to view from the park. New this year is that Burton Chace Park will be closed to the general public on July 4th. Pre-registered guests will be allowed entry from 5 to 10 p.m., and capacity is very limited. There will also be no in/out privileges. Parking will be available for a special event rate of $20. Longtime Westchester resident Betty Smith recently celebrated a momentous occasion–her 100th
birthday on June 24! Surrounded by family and members of the PEO Chapter MP Westchester, a Christian philanthropic educational organization that raises money for scholarships for women across the world, Betty enjoyed sharing stories and pictures of her life over the last century. Originally from Tennessee, she and her family moved to Westchester in the 1970s for her husband’s job in aerospace. Betty quickly became an active member of the community through volunteering with organizations like PEO, the YMCA, Westchester United Methodist Church and the Woman’s Club. Happy Birthday, Betty!

SCENE BEST NEW EXPERIENCE IN PLAYA VISTA...
Welcome to Free Market!
Free Market is an amazing addition to RUNWAY, a game changer both in experience and offerings. The architecture and design draw you in, and the brands and experiences there make you want to stay! RUNWAY is already remarkably unique for the Westside of L.A., and Free Market adds a dimension that will add growth as a destination location. The local community has been obsessed since its opening, and for those that haven’t visited yet, it is a must see! Here are just a few of our newly opened favorites:
1
Joliet
Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite and some coffee, or looking for a spot for a cocktail with some friends, Joliet has got you covered. With eye-catching bar seating in the retail space and a “speakeasy” style bar in the back, Joliet infuses a new vibe into the Playa Vista Scene. This fresh experience is from the creator behind The Know Where Bar in Hollywood, and now you can be one of the first to visit this new cafe and bar right here in your neighborhood!
2
County Line Florals
County Line Florals is not your typical flower shop–it’s an experience all in of itself! Actress-producer Abigail Spencer has brought this flowerdelivery service to Playa Vista, and it’s not only a place to visit for an amazing flower arrangement, but also a place to hang out or host a unique date night! It’s the perfect compliment to other offerings at Free Market. We recommend grabbing a glass of wine or some ice cream, and then watching flower artists do their magic at the aptly named “florista bar.”
3
Alchemy Works
Alchemy Works is a coastal California retail, gallery and event space concept. Stocked with new and vintage items for your home and lifestyle, this locale is sure to help you step up your current aesthetic or find some new design inspiration. It’s also the place to find summer must-haves, gifts or ideas for your home. Next time you’re at Free Market, make sure to stop in for some retail therapy!
All places are located at RUNWAY Playa Vista at 12746 W. Jefferson Blvd. in Playa Vista.

It was the year 2000 and excitement was at an all-time high. The community was embracing a new century, full of bright futures and endless possibilities, and residents were coming together
in celebration. This is where the history begins for the LAX Coastal Fourth of July Parade. Read the complete history at laxcoastalonparade.com!
Most people recognize Chambers of Commerce simply as business organizations that advocate on behalf of their members. While working to promote the success of their members is one part of the LAX Coastal Chamber’s mission, they also work to increase the vitality of the neighborhood. As they like to say, “we are building a better community–together!” The majority of its board of directors live or work in the community and are also committed to a number of nonprofit boards that promote making our region a strong place to live, work and raise a family. Putting on the parade each year is a labor of love for the Chamber,
its staff and the volunteers who work for months to host this neighborhood tradition. While the parade is the Chamber’s most well-known event, they also host the Teacher Eddy Awards, ChamberFest LAeXpo and Protectors’ Appreciation Week, among others. The Chamber is proud to be a business resource with programs such as Lifestyles, the Education Committee and the Development Design & Construction (DDC) Group aimed at elevating local companies and professionals. For info on the LAX Coastal Chamber, its members and more, please visit laxcoastal.com.
Making business recovery a priority and reassessing the needs of the chamber membership through the strategic planning process, Chair Rae Lamothe (right) is ready to get to work. Rae splits her time between her Employment Law and Healthcare practice. She counsels both employers and employees on protecting their rights in disputes over wage and hour claims, as well as employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims. 4th of July Parade Program
July 2021 • Page 13
The LAX Coastal Fourth of July Parade means a lot to us, and we know it means a lot to our community, too. While we kept things festive last year with Spirit Week activities and we were planning something similar for this year, we had our fingers crossed that the parade would be back, and it is! After hearing the state was on track to be fully reopened on June 15, the Parade Committee quickly moved from organizing a virtual event to cramming six months worth of planning into a month and a half! After more than a year of so much uncertainty, stress and challenges, we felt it was important to host this beloved neighborhood tradition even if that meant it would be a smaller, scaled-down version for 2021. While you may not see as many grand floats heading down Loyola Blvd. this year and our marching groups may be smaller, the important thing is that we’re able to come together
to celebrate our community, our country and our neighborhood heroes, while having a little bit of fun and entertainment after this difficult year. We look forward to seeing you all along Loyola Blvd., hearing your collective cheers and feeling the energy that you all bring on parade day. Happy Fourth of July! -The Fourth of July Parade Committee Some things to note for our 2021 Parade: • It’s a scaled-down event with 30+ entries compared to our normal 50. • Since the parade falls on a Sunday, it has a special start time of 11:30 a.m. We estimate the parade will be about an hour long. • There are no bleachers at center stage this year. Please plan accordingly if you require chair seating. • Seating inside the gates at LMU will not be
permitted. Parking on campus is also not available. • It is recommended you arrive early to reserve your spot along the route. • County guidelines for this event include: 1. Stay home if you are sick with a cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever or chills or if you are currently under quarantine or isolation. 2. Masks are recommended if you are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and distancing is difficult. 3. Be considerate and keep you distance (about 2 arm lengths) from others. 4. Clean your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer after contact with frequently touched surfaces. • An EMT will be stationed at 83rd Street for any emergencies. • Water is available for free at announcer booths, as well as distributed by the Stephanie Younger Group along the route.

Continuing our annual tradition, the LAPD Pacific Area Junior Cadets lead off our parade and proudly carry the American flag. The Cadets range from ages 14 to 20 and work in close partnership with LAPD Community Relations. They will be marching all the way to 80th Street to give everyone in attendance the chance to salute our nation’s flag.
The LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce is honored to invite our Healthcare Heroes to serve as this year’s Grand Marshal in the parade. What a year it has been! Through the last 15 months these brave men and women have worked long and hard to get us through the pandemic. We cannot thank our doctors, nurses, and all the healthcare workers enough for staying on the frontline risking their health and safety for our community. Riding on a LAFD 1932 Bandwagon, we have representatives from both Cedars-Sinai and Kaiser Permanente. Please join us in standing and give them a huge round of applause!

The award-winning Marching Nighthawk Band and Color Guard first participated in the 2019 parade and went on later that year to place fourth in LAUSD’s Band and Drill Team Championship. Under the direction of Reggie Smith, Liz Hinojose, Cesar Lara and Drum Major Gabriel Mendoza, they’re representing their theme for the 2021-2022 school year, “Building Back Better!” The Nighthawk Band and Color Guard would like to thank the Mayor of Maywood, Ricardo Lara, and their City Council for giving them funding for their bus today, so they could have the opportunity to be ambassadors of good will and spirit to represent the beautiful city of Maywood! The Nighthawks would also like to thank Maywood Academy High School Principal Maricella Garcia and her supportive staff for their help in preparing the students for this trip. Celebrating on the Fourth of July
As we celebrate the Fourth of July, we think of American Independence Day. However, how much do we really know about the historic date, July 4, 1776, the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, which would become the day representing the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation? When the Revolutionary War broke out in April of 1775, those colonists who desired complete independence from Great Britain were few and considered radicals. However, by the middle of 1776, the tide had turned due to a bestselling pamphlet “Common Sense,” published by Thomas Paine earlier that year. The growing hostility against Britain had gained momentum. By June 7, 1776, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, Virginia Delegate Richard Henry Lee called for the colonies’ independence by
introducing a motion that was aggressively debated. Congress tabled the motion and formed a five-man committee, which included Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert Livingston of New York, charging the five with the task of creating a formal statement, justifying such a break with Great Britain. On July 2, 1776, the 13 Colonies of the Continental Congress finalized the debate and voted to claim independence from Great Britain. Two days later, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia held the first annual commemorative celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1777, while the Continental Congress was still occupied with the ongoing American War of Independence, later to be known as the American Revolutionary War that lasted from April 19, 1775 through September 3, 1783.

The tradition of setting off fireworks began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized Independence Day celebration. A ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies. On the same night, the Sons of Liberty, founded by Samuel Adams and John Hancock, set off fireworks over Boston Common. The patriotic tradition became more widespread after the War of 1812, after again facing Great Britain in battle. By 1870, the United States Congress proclaimed the Fourth of July a federal holiday. Independence Day remains an important symbol of patriotism, reflected in the tradition of displaying the American flag. John Adams always believed July 2 should have been the date dedicated to celebrating American independence and, in protest, repeatedly turned down invitations to appear at Fourth of July events. Coincidentally, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, our second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, both died on the 50th

During a June Westchester Del Rey Little League (WDRLL) playoff softball game at Carl Nielsen Youth Park, minor division player Annie Garcia turned in an exciting unassisted triple play. Ten-year-old Annie was playing third base with the bases loaded. An opposing player hit a line drive, which she maneuvered to get in front of and made the catch, resulting in the first out. She then stepped on third base, forcing the second out and then tagged the oncoming runner from second base for the third out. This is actually the second time this season that she has
accomplished this special feat! The first came against a visiting team from Wiseburn Little League in May. In almost the same scenario, there were runners on second and third base. The Wiseburn hitter popped up to third base where Annie bobbled the catch for a moment, and the runner thought she would drop it, so they advanced. After securing the ball for the first out, she then stepped on third for the second out. The last out came when she tagged out the runner from second. Congratulations, Annie!

Using the fresh start effect with commitment contracts to reach your goals By Jeff Blair

The answer can be back from our daily obligations and found in the “fresh start” effect. Ideally, we would maintain the same level of It’s a way to put past struggles in the motivation throughout the weeks, rear view mirror and move forward months and years after the fresh start with optimism. New Year’s resolutions are the most and this would help us reach our goals. A milestone birthdays (40, 50, 60, 70, commitment contract allows you to etc.) and other personally significant occasions. The first day of a new week, turn the fresh start effect into goal
achievement. For example, you might want to exercise at least 10 times in July. A commitment contract puts that goal in writing and establishes a deadline for the goal–but that isn’t all. Commitment contracts can also impose financial consequences if you do not achieve your goal. A commitment contract could say if you do not exercise 10 times in July, you will donate $100 to a charity. These funds are usually given to a third party such as a friend or coworker at the beginning of the goal period. If you reach your goal, the money is returned to you. If you do not reach the goal, your friend mails the money to the charity. Sometimes these commitments even come with a twist. Some people write their contract where the donation goes to a cause they are against. Imagine if you did not achieve your contract goal then you would have to donate to a cause you strongly dislike. This can be highly motivating for some people and might make you more likely to reach your goal. Other common commitment contracts are used for things like stopping smoking, losing weight and finishing a race or other physical challenge. Commitment contracts can even address career or other personal relationship goals. By pairing the momentum of fresh starts with the
practicality of commitment contracts, you can increase the likelihood of achieving your fitness goals. Try it out and tell me how it goes. Random Notes/Opinion
Finding freedom in your relationships
By Fay Craton
Opinion: Happy Birthday, USA! I grew up knowing we are a free country and valuing freedom. Listening to many different people, from many different walks of life, with many different perspectives about freedom, I learned that for some folks freedom in relationships can sometimes mean having little or no accountability to other people. Witnessing the outcomes of this perspective demonstrates to me extensive self-sabotage, a loss of selfesteem and damaged trust–in other words, poor quality connection with others. Let’s break down what I said into pieces. First, freedom in and of itself does not translate to contentment or happiness. Occasionally, a person may leave a committed relationship because they are just unhappy, only to find they still do not have the happiness they were seeking. Sometimes a person might not actually leave but is so withdrawn or cold they might as well have physically left. Other times, someone might just be bored, and they blame their boredom on their partner. The answer is not necessarily in leaving or isolating from the relationship. There are other, more lasting paths to gain long-term contentment and a sense of authentic freedom. Let’s look at self-sabotage. Relationships are destroyed by individual actions. In a committed life partnership, your partner must be more important than others. If you say, “I will do whatever I want because I am bored or frustrated,” you are damaging your partnership. Another form of self-sabotage is attempting to overly manage your relationship, denying your partners’ age and experience. Managing your partner is demeaning and makes it seem as if they do not have the same level of intelligence you have. Healthy relationships are built on trust. When trust is broken, there is always some form of self-sabotage which can take many forms. Take a few minutes to think about how you might have treated your partner as being less important than you. While considering, ask yourself, • Am I pushing my will onto my partner without consideration of their needs? • Am I acting needy or naïve as a means to get my own way? • Am I frequently critical of how
my partner accomplishes stuff? • Have I agreed upon an action, knowing I won’t pay attention to the agreement? • Am I acting as their boss instead of a partner? • Have I done the opposite of what my partner would like out of obstinance or anger? • Have I broken any understandings my partner and I have based our relationship on? • Am I faithful to my partner? Doing whatever you want and disregarding the needs of your partner creates a direct path to destroying trust between you. When accountability to a life partnership is lost, it becomes difficult to trust one another. Self-esteem is important. It partially comes from a personal sense of approval and acceptance reflected from another person. It also comes from developing new skills and gaining new experiences. Individuals and relationships need to be able to grow. Sometimes, the experiences could be outside of the relationship. A life partnership is not made of two cloned people. It is made of people who support and accept one another. Freedom found in relationships is a dance between your own needs and the needs of your partner. Success is tied to healthy communication. It requires being completely truthful about plans, events and interactions with others. Communication includes discussing your feelings, wants and concerns. It requires fully listening without judgment. The more you and your partner can express your thoughts, fears and dreams to each other, the greater will be your success. My wish is for you to experience a form of freedom which gives to you a sense of meaning. Humans are social beings. Contentment comes from authentically and honestly connecting with other people. To have quality bonding with another person requires trust, good communication and straightforward speech. Westchester AYSO boys soccer team captures championship for historic third consecutive season The Westchester Blue Jets completed a rare three-peat capturing the Western States AYSO soccer championship for a third consecutive season. The Western States Championship brings together the top AYSO soccer teams from California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington for a tournament to conclude the season. The Blue Jets first captured the Western States Championship in 2019 and maintained their championship throughout the pandemic-shortened 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Blue Jets competed in the U-13 AYSO Extra boys division for the 2021 season. The team finished in first place in the spring regular season for Section 1, despite playing against older competition, and earned a return trip to the Extra Championship Match in May in Redlands, California. There the team defeated Menifee 3-2 in the match. The Blue Jets finished the 2021 spring season with a 13-2 record and also captured a tournament title at the City SC Temecula Wine Classic in June. The team had several impressive victories over local club and Extra teams from San Diego, Cathedral City, Santa Monica, Glendale and Alhambra.

Over the course of their three years together, the Blue Jets amassed more than 100 victories and captured more than five tournament championships throughout California. The Blue Jets formed in August 2018 and represent AYSO Region 7, which consists of players from Westchester, Playa Vista, Playa del Rey, Inglewood, Ladera Heights, Marina Del Rey and Mar Vista. The diverse team competed in the AYSO Extra Program, which provides a more competitive and progressive soccer experience from the recreation core program. “The Blue Jets simply nailed it. The
boys had a remarkable three-year run together,” said Coach Robert Milligan. “We stayed in touch throughout the pandemic and began to train as soon as we were able. The team showed a great deal of resilience and sacrifice, practicing social distancing, and using masks and a variety of local fields to stay in form. We integrated a few new players, worked on our development areas, and by the end of the season, we really hit our stride, capturing the Western States Championship again and a club tournament in Temecula against a nationally ranked club team. The team’s perseverance, patience and
dedication during an unprecedented and unpredictable life event paid off with a third consecutive state championship. They’re a special group with championship hearts.” “We are very proud of the boys. The Blue Jets are a family, and we will have lifelong memories of fun, hard work, and success,” said Coach Harvey Galvan. “I almost didn’t come back [for the third season], but I am glad that I did. Over the course of three years, the team was simply unbeatable and embodied a winning culture of excellence. Their victory in the championship game was not a surprise and a demonstration of their championship character. They bonded as a group and never let any team outwork them on the pitch. Their success was no accident. It was because of their learning, studying, sacrifice and love of what they were doing. We will always remember Westchester’s Blue Jets. They are the champs!” AYSO Region 7 is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season. Team formation and practice for Region 7 begins in August, with play beginning on September 11. Visit ayso7.org for more information about the league and about joining a team.

By Consuelo Israelson Adaptable, adventurous and not afraid to get out of their comfort zone, the Holts are on the same page when it comes to spontaneity. This has led to great vacations, unusual experiences and serendipitous job opportunities. Martha, Zach and their three children relocated here from the Pacific Northwest three years ago and have fit in seamlessly. “It was painful for us to leave our neighborhood in Seattle for many reasons, but one of them was missing the families that we had connected with up there that made up our community. I had resolved that I wouldn’t find that again when we moved to L.A. and had made peace with it,” Martha said. “However, we hadn’t been in Westchester six months when I found myself with a new group of moms to call friends and put on the emergency contact list.” The Holts loved their new community so much, Martha decided to run for Neighborhood Council earlier this year. “While the outcome wasn’t what I’d hoped, I was overwhelmed by the number of people who were not only excited to vote for me, but willing to canvass the neighborhood and spread the word about me and my candidacy,” she said. “The decision to run was an easy one. Westchester is an outstanding community, and I was thrilled with the idea that I could represent my slice of it. It was a wonderful and humbling experience to be surrounded by that kind of support when I still felt like a newbie in the neighborhood!” The family found themselves needing to relocate to Southern California because Zach got a job as a software developer in Playa Vista. They discovered when house hunting that while they loved Playa Vista, many of the homes in their price range didn’t have yards, so they decided to look at Westchester. “We drove up and said, this is a little gem! You’d never know this place was tucked between Playa Vista and LAX. This is awesome,” said Martha. What sealed the deal was seeing so many families with children walking their dogs and looking content. “It’s a real gift to be in the second largest city in the country and find this small town-ish community. We love it!” she added. While Zach’s job in Playa Vista didn’t last long after the pandemic
hit, he was able to find the perfect position for him as a software developer with Biteable. The company works entirely remotely, which was a godsend during the mandatory Safer-at-Home quarantine. Biteable gives you all the tools you need to make short studio quality videos without experience. “I used the platform to make an ad for myself when I ran for Neighborhood Council, and it was so easy,” Martha noted. Martha is a stay-at-home mom for now, but anticipates re-entering the workforce after her youngest enters school full-time. Her adventurous streak manifested when she was applying for colleges and spotted a pamphlet for Westmont College, a small private school in Santa Barbara. She was living in Seattle at the time. “I was in my guidance counselor’s office and knew I was going to apply to three in-state schools. Then I saw a brochure for this college that was by the beach. It had volleyball nets. Now, I didn’t play volleyball, but I thought ‘How cool is that?’ Then I realized that the older brother of one of my friends went there and loved it. I knew we couldn’t afford it, but on the spot I decided to apply,” Martha said. She and her dad visited the college after she was accepted and both fell in love with the school and Santa Barbara. After meeting with college administrators, they made it work. “What if I hadn’t gone there? My life would have been fine, but how lovely it’s been because of it,” she said. Martha majored in Spanish and spent a semester abroad in Chile, the only one in her class. “As a 20-year-old, I could feel myself spreading my wings. Being alone, south of the equator, before cell phones and internet, I was figuring out who I was as a person, what I believed in and what I could do,” she remembered. “If I could do this, then I could do anything.” After college, Martha looked for jobs that kept her in Santa Barbara, eventually working her way into a bilingual career helping companies and employees with their benefits and retirement plans. Her job was to communicate with Spanish-speaking employees. She quit to stay home and raise their children, Augie, Nora and Abe. Abe, 4, attended Westchester Wonder Kids before the pandemic. He loves scooter rides and swimming in their backyard pool. Nora, 8,
will be attending third grade at Kentwood Elementary. Augie, 11, recently culminated from Kentwood Elementary and will be attending El Segundo Middle School this fall. Augie and Nora both play water polo for South Bay United and will be going to the Junior Olympics this summer, which thrills their parents because Zach played water polo in high school and college. “Nora asked to play when she was only six. I wouldn’t call her ‘fearless,’ but nothing stops her. She will try just about anything,” Martha said. “Water polo got us through the pandemic because they were still able to do swim practices that were no-contact. That got the kids out of the house and seeing other kids and adults. That was a big part of why we wanted them to keep doing it. It was a great opportunity for them to not only be around other kids, but also authority figures.” Road trips also helped the Holts survive the seemingly endless months of quarantine. “We are big road trippers. We love it! We took two big ones last year and they were both pretty spontaneous. We do spontaneous really well,” Martha said. “In September the air was smoky with all the fires, school was remote and it was very hot. It was like a trifecta of things that were making it pretty unbearable to be in the house, because we have no air conditioning. Within three hours, we packed our bags and all the school stuff and started driving to Utah. We picked up my sister-in-law on the way. We wound up staying in St. George, Utah for two weeks. It ended up being one of the best vacations we’ve ever had.” They also took a 10-day road trip to Seattle, but they gave themselves a few days to plan that one. “In my perfect world, we’d have a motor home, but that’s not going to happen for a while,” Martha said. “Now the kids know they can do 1012 hours in the car with the help of screen time and snacks.” The Holts also love how Westchester is the perfect place for their kids to spread their own wings as they get older. “Augie and his friends will hop on their scooters or bikes and just cruise around the neighborhood,” Martha said. “We don’t let them cross any major streets, but we feel safe for him to experience a little bit of independence as he gets older. They could be gone for hours and we know he’s okay.”

It’s our three-year anniversary! We moved here at the end of June 2018.
For our family, it would probably be getting Randy’s Donuts or Benny’s breakfast burritos to start. We’d then probably pack up the car for the beach, either Dockweiler or El Porto. We’d pack snacks, surf boards, boogie boards and be there until dinnertime. We love to cap our beach days with Cinco for the $1 tacos that feed us all! What a Southern California answer! After dinner, we’d come home, hose everything/everyone down, and watch a movie. Alternatively, when the LMU campus was open, we loved to ride our bikes there and have dinner at The Habit. The kids loved being around the college students. Fingers crossed that this comes back as things start to open up more.
It’s tough to answer that as we’ve only been here three years, and much of that was in quarantine. I will say that because of the pandemic, we have really gotten to know our immediate neighbors. A group of us connected over text message early on in the pandemic, some of whom I hadn’t even met yet, and we really started to look out for one another. We are so looking forward to having a block party where we can see each other face to face! This has been a welcome change for us since we moved in.
I have always loved living in areas where I can walk to get what I need. It was high on the list of priorities when we were looking for a home in L.A. One of the things that sold me on our home, was that so much was walkable. We get our cars fixed at B&J, groceries at Vons, and we all get our haircuts with Amy Cheyne, who is just a couple blocks away. When my older son played baseball, he could ride his bike to games at American Field, and when our youngest was in preschool, he attended Westchester Wonderkids, all within the confines of Westchester.
