EDITORIAL
EDITORS’ LETTER What a wonderful summer it has been! It took a while for the settled good weather to arrive, but it came around mid-August and never left. What a joy it is to be able to sit outside sipping rosé until late in the evening. Or champagne, of course.
On 19 September, we received a visit from Baron Philip de Rothschild. We had the honour of welcoming him in person in Hotel New York and on the ss Rotterdam. He presented us with the official plaque ‘Champagne Barons de Rothschild Ambassador’, because our Michelin-starred restaurant élevé has been selected as an ambassador of De Rothschild Champagne. Four of our hotels are currently ambassadors, which is rather special in the select company of 25 Dutch businesses. We are very proud to serve the very best champagne in our hotels. You are more than welcome to come and enjoy it with us!
Photo Bastiaan van Musscher
And then we had another honour. KLM selected Hotel New York as the 97th KLM house. Every year KLM makes a new edition of these world famous Delft Blue houses, which are real collector’s items for the Business Class travellers of KLM. On the 7th of October, the house is festively unveiled at the ss Rotterdam, by Mayor Aboutaleb of Rotterdam and the CEO of KLM, Peter Elbers. In the magazine you can read a report of this special day!
Another highlight is the Alma-Tadema exhibition in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. AlmaTadema was one of the most successful painters in Friesland. His paintings have been flown in from around the world and brought together in the Fries Museum. Kris Callens, director of the museum, talks about it in this magazine. The collection can be admired from 1 October 2016 to 7 February 2017. We highly recommend it!
Art is the theme of this magazine. In this magazine, you can read about the authentic works of art on the ss Rotterdam, each one more special than the next. Monique des Bouvrie, Piet Hein Eek and Ans Markus, who each have their own individual interpretation of Dutch ‘A’rt, also have their say. That is definitely something to be proud of.
Terschelling has been a place where, for many years now, exceptional artistic interpretations can be experienced at the renowned open-air festival Oerol. Cornald Maas presented Oerol on television during the Oerol week in June. He tells us all about it in this magazine.
It was a wonderful summer, and we are very much looking forward to the coming autumn and winter. I hope you will enjoy reading this magazine.
Kind regards,
Harry and Jennifer Westers

YOU ALSO GIVE PEOPLE ADVICE ABOUT ART.
‘We have a lot of art here in Het Arsenaal, and we work with various artists and galleries. The main thing about art is that it should touch you; as far as I’m concerned, you don’t need to think it’s beautiful, you need to feel it. THE NEXT STEPS: • September 2016-April 2017: Putting up the rough structure from the basement to the roof. Up in the air! • November 2016: The advent of winter. Let us hope for a mild winter, so construction can continue during the winter months. • From May/June 2017: Depending on the progress of the structural work, the hotel rooms will be assembled in the building as prefabricated modules. Exciting… • June/July 2017: Start of the finishing process; construction is slowly nearing completion.
We can’t wait to see the end result, and are keeping a close eye on the progress of the building work. Would you like to keep up to date on Hotel Jakarta? Follow its construction on hoteljakarta.amsterdam/bouwblog.

WestCord Times IN THE NEWS New WestCord Hotel in Groningen • New sous-chef for Hotel de Veluwe • New work area in Hotel Delft
HOTEL DE VELUWE WELCOMES NEW SOUS-CHEF Hotel de Veluwe has recently gained a new sous-chef. Patrick Verkade has worked as a chef for 26 years, gaining experience in various restaurants and hotels. He considers it his mission to let his guests enjoy his food to the full and go home with a feeling of satisfaction.

BEING TYPHOON… EVERY DAY
WestCord Art Hotel more than lives up to its name. On 16 September, the popular rap artist Typhoon opened the exhibition ‘Being Typhoon… every day’ in the WestCord Art Hotel. Photographer Isabelle Renate la Poutré followed the rapper for two years, on stage and behind the scenes. The exhibition shows the struggle experienced by many artists: wanting to stay themselves and at the same time, having to live up to high expectations.

WADDEN WORLD HERITAGE IN HOTEL SCHYLGE The Wadden Sea area is an extraordinary part of the Netherlands, with its own flora and fauna. As for most visitors there is still a lot left to discover, Hotel Schylge has had various local animal and plant species printed on its room doors. They have also set up an exhibition in the lobby about the Wadden World Heritage.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE HOTELS Now the busy summer season has come to an end, we have the time to look ahead to 2017. Preparations for Christmas and New Year’s eve have started, but we also have plenty of renovations planned. Strandhotel Seeduyn will get new balconies, the bathrooms in Hotel Noordsee will be renovated and in ApartHotel Boschrijck they finished the new children’s paradise.
A NEW WORK AREA IN HOTEL DELFT
The comfortable lobby in Hotel Delft has been used as a work and meeting place for years. Last September, a nice work area was added to the lobby, and it was time for a make-over. The hotel’s good neighbour IKEA tackled part of the lobby, with impressive results!
NOTHING TOPS GRONINGEN! Everyone who has ever been to Groningen knows that it’s a wonderful city. That is exactly why a WestCord Hotel will open here in 2020. Construction of the hotel on the east side of Grote Markt will start in mid-2018. The hotel will be designed by none other than the Berlin architect Thomas Müller.
LJOUWERT CULINAIR Last September, the team of Restaurant élevé returned to the leading culinary festival in Leeuwarden: Ljouwert Culinair. For three days, they prepared their best dishes on the spot, impressing visitors with their culinary masterpieces. Ljouwert Culinair was a great success once again. We are looking forward to next year!
PLAYMOBIL PLAY AREA ON THE SS ROTTERDAM In celebration of the launch of a Playmobil toy cruise ship, a marvellous Playmobil Kids Room has been created on the ss Rotterdam. The cruise ship is no less than 66 centimetres long, making it Playmobil’s largest boat. Children (and adults too) can now play to their heart’s content with part of the collection in the Playmobil Kids Room and, of course, admire the cruise ship.
OFFICE FOR A DAY When the technical support service and financial administration offices were relocated, these left two empty spaces in the Fashion Hotel. What a waste! In order to retain the atmosphere of their former use, the offices have now been turned into ‘offices for a day’. The perfect place for a creative brainstorming session or an important meeting.

A good neighbour is worth more...
WestCord Hotel Delft and IKEA are neighbours, and the saying is certainly true for IKEA and WestCord. ESTHER DORHOUT MEES
‘It feels surreal to stand next to Galliano and Givenchy’ SOMETIMES, YOU MEET PEOPLE WHO WERE SIMPLY BORN TO DO WHAT THEY DO. ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE IS ESTHER DORHOUT MEES (35), WHO DREAMT OF DESIGNING FASHION EVER SINCE SHE WAS A YOUNG GIRL. STUDYING AT ARTEZ IN ARNHEM WAS A LOGICAL STEP, AND AFTER WORKING FOR BRANDS LIKE BRUUNS BAZAAR AND TOMMY HILFIGER, SHE HAS NOW BEEN RUNNING HER OWN LABEL FOR SIX YEARS AND - AS YOU HAVE PROBABLY GUESSED - IT IS FLOURISHING. THE DUTCH FASHION DESIGNER KNOWS HOW IT’S DONE, SO: READ AND LEARN! WHAT IS TYPICALLY DORHOUT MEES? ‘My designs are very feminine and wearable, but also conceptual and narrative. I always look for the balance between the two; the elements must be equivalent and enhance each other. I also think it is important that an item of clothing is wearable for the female body, that it accentuates her body in the right way and makes her look more beautiful. At the same time, that is not the only goal - the journey that the story and the theme make through the collection is just as important to me.’
PRIOR TO PRESENTING THE COLLECTION, YOU ALWAYS SHOW A FILM. IN MARCH 2016, DURING PARIS FASHION WEEK, YOU SHOWED THE FILM ‘NUBIVAGANT’ FOR WHICH YOU WON TWO PRIZES. WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THIS FALL/WINTER 16 COLLECTION? ‘I became fascinated by the gathering of huge flocks of birds moving as one silhouette without any clear communication - a hypnotising sight. I saw it by the side of the road last year. I stopped and I knew: I have to make a collection about this. How that’s expressed? For me, it’s about the whole story and the feeling that comes with it. Take the jet-black eyes of the models, for example, the spider-leg eyelashes or the hand-knitted, three-dimensional fabrics as a kind of animal fur or plumage.’
YOU HAVE RUN A VERY SUCCESSFUL BRAND FOR SIX YEARS NOW, WHAT’S YOUR SECRET? ‘I’ve wanted to design since I was a little girl; it’s one of my first memories. I felt that desire so strongly, from deep within me. I’m amazed too that it was so clear to me at such a young age. Whether you’re successful or not doesn’t just depend on whether you are good at something, it has much more to do with your

DE SEERUYTER RIDING STABLES and its Friesian horses
VLIELAND CELEBRATES! AT LEAST IT DID ON 1 JULY, DURING THE FESTIVE REOPENING OF THE FULLY REFURBISHED DE SEERUYTER RIDING STABLES. AND THERE IS MORE NEWS... The old riding stables were completely demolished and a lot of hard work went into building new, modern riding stables. Vlieland can be proud of the result which is truly unique. The stables are completely tucked away in the sand dunes, making them part of the landscape. Another ideal feature of this location is the vicinity of the sea. It makes De Seeruyter the perfect place from which to start a nice beach ride.
For connaisseurs of this breed, here is their parentage:
To top it all, they even have the pride of Friesland - the Friesian horse. These beautiful animals too can be found at De Seeruyter.
Marijke = Aan (from Abe) x Tsjerk Mara = Loadewyk (from Tsjerk) x Dirk
Last September, the riding stables welcomed two new Friesian horses: Mara and Marijke. These are two fouryear old mares who have come over from the Rijs in Friesland. On arrival, Mara and Marijke were eagerly awaited by the other horses and fortunately, they felt at home in the comfortable stables straight away. Obviously, everyone here is extremely proud of the beautiful Friesian

THE SS ROTTERDAM

THE SS ROTTERDAM BREATHES ART TOO! THIS IS THE LARGEST PASSENGER SHIP EVER BUILT IN THE NETHERLANDS, AND IT SET OFF ON ITS FIRST VOYAGE TO NEW YORK ON 3 SEPTEMBER 1959. Art on board
Kunst aan boord – which means ‘Art on board’ – is a handy book about the many artworks on board of the ss Rotterdam, made in cooperation with Klaas Krijnen and Sandra van Berkum. For over forty years the ship sailed across the oceans, while passengers lingered in the beautiful interiors full of art. Renowned artists made wall tapestries, ceramic panels, paintings, walls inlaid with exotic woods, as well as clocks and balustrades. In the rooms and bars, the staircase and the hotel rooms, up to the bottom of the pool. It’s very special that not only the ship, but also its art is so well maintained. A SANCHEZ ROMATE. pale yellow, very dry wine with a delicate yet rich taste, with a hint of spice and a slightly bitter after-taste. This Fino will certainly pick up on the typically Spanish flavours of roasted peppers, tomato and mackerel. The fresh acidity will cool down the spiciness of the tandoori and create a link with the creamy yoghurt. The average age of this sherry is around 10 years. This Fino owes its special character to the development of the Flor; this is a layer of yeast cells that forms a blanket on the surface of the wine. This happens after the fermentation has finished and the wine has been fortified with wine alco-

The end product is bottled from the lowest to the Solera system, which consists of a long row of cask, making this sherry a complex blend of several casks stacked up high. The young Sherry goes into the vintages. Cheers!

After a rather festive weekend, I start my Monday with a large cup of green For breakfast, I have a bowl of red fruit. I have lunch at a beach restaurant tea and two spelt crackers with peanut butter. At work, I opt for a Dutch raw and cannot resist ordering my ultimate guilty pleasure: a cheese toastie with beef spread roll and am treated to an old-school ice lolly by a colleague - yay! mayonnaise. Yum! I have it with a glass of Rivella. For dinner, I have this In the evening I prepare courgetti (courgette pasta) with chicken, pesto, basil delicious salad with raw spinach, fried beef tips, a classic mustard vinaigrette, and tomatoes.
walnuts and blue cheese!
TUESDAY I skip breakfast and have some strawberries and a spelt cracker with goat’s cheese for lunch. In the evening I visit my parents and because it is such nice weather, we have dinner in the garden. My mother makes fried potatoes especially for me and serves them with fresh barbecued sausages and summery cucumber salad with tzatziki. This feels like I’m on holiday!
THURSDAY My breakfast consists of a spelt cracker with goat’s cheese - again. In the afternoon, I rush from one meeting to the next and forget to have lunch. That evening, I visit the opening of a new hotel in Amsterdam and - besides a glass of champagne - enjoy the wonderful hors d’oeuvres on offer. Among others, I try the crab cocktail with avocado cream and a marinated tuna tartare with wasabi and sesame.

SATURDAY We have a really long lie-in and only start the day around lunch time. Oops: another toastie! But the very best kind: made by my sweetheart, with cheese, tomatoes, pan-fried and a bit of butter on the outside. In the evening, I go to the Foodhallen for a drink, a bite and a film. We share some sushi, flammkuchen and delicious yakatory satay.
SUNDAY Nearly every Sunday, I drag my loved ones to a food festival, tasting or nice market. Strolling around, sitting at a picnic table drinking wine, friends who come along and, of course, tasting everything: I love it! Today, we are at the Neighbourfood Market in the Westerpark and our snacks include this meze from a Libanese Food Truck with wraps, falafel, hummus and salad.
FRIDAY I have a large cup of green tea and oat crackers for breakfast. I spend the afternoon working at home, and when my boyfriend brings home hot cheese rolls, they are simply too good to resist! In the evening, I flop down on the sofa with my laptop and, while I’m blogging, enjoy the Plaa Chu Chee from one of my favourite Thai restaurants in town.
