WELCOME to the STEELES SHIELD FINAL This is the second final of the Manchester Saturday Morning Fooball League 2013/14 Season. The MSMFL is now in its twenty fifth year. It was formed in 1989 with the amagamation of the Manchester Education Football League and the Christian Fellowship Football League The STEELES SHIELD was originally a trophy played for in the CFFL League. It is now the the trophy that is played for, in knockout competition, by the MSMFL’s First Division clubs. Tonight’s final is between North Manchester FC and Torpedo Chorlton. Both teams have had successful seasons’ and sit second and fourth in the First Division respectively having played all their league games. Indeed North Manchester may yet be ‘pipped’ for Runners-up spot and Torpedo are five points behind in the standings. But the Chorlton side will be encouraged by two league wins (2 -1 and 3 -2) over their rivals. Add to this that Torpedo topped their Steeles Mini-league Group ‘A’ and then went on to beat Manchester Medics 1-0 in tense and keenly fought Semi-Final. In contrast North Manchester were Runners-up to Medics in Group ‘B’ - but then went on to beat Brushes Rangers 6 – 2 in their Semi- Final. Both teams play attractive football and have dominant midfield players who are well capable of making defence spitting passes to service quick - powerful forwards. A counter point to this ‘style’ is that both sides have excellent defensive capabilities. An interesting, intriguing and (let’s hope) exciting game is in prospect! On 9th April West Didsbury and Chorlton FC hosted the President’s Shield Final between Cassidys FC and Alkrington Dynamos. In a fast and pulsating game Alkrington ran out 4-2 winners. Last week the CFFL Trophy Final between AFC Middleton and North End FC saw ‘Middy’ crush their local rivals 8-1 – with Danny Murray bagging four goals. On Saturday 3rd May West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC hosts the ‘Open’ Manchester Evening News Cup Final between Division Two Champions AFC Middleton and Brushes Rangers Spartak. The kick off is at 10.30am. MSMFL Finals – Presentation Day Our LEAGUE PRESENTATION DAY will take place after the MEN Cup Final on Saturday 3rd May from 12.30pm at WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC. CUP FINAL, LEAGUE WINNERS and RUNNERS-UP TROPHIES together with INDIVIDUAL AWARDS will be presented in the Club House. ALL WELCOME!. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE MSMFL FINALS AND ENJOY THE GAME.

Torpedo Chorlton ~ Looking to re-live the Glory Years! Torpedo Chorlton were founded in 2001, the same year they joined the MSMFL. The team’s most successful season was in 2010/11, which included winning the Steeles Shield in a dramatic final against tonight’s opponents, ending in a penalty shootout in near darkness. They then went on to finish a close second in the league. Despite the rising standard of the league and a high turnover of players, Torpedo have remained competitive every year. Perhaps distracted by intense media interest in one temporary signing (some guy called Petrov), this season started poorly, but the team has become very difficult to beat over the second half of the season. Even in the face of huge selection difficulties in defence and goal, an unofficial club record for clean sheets has been set. Semi-Final Report: Torpedo Chorlton 1 Manchester Medics 0 Torpedo gained some revenge for a heavy league defeat inflicted by long-time rivals Manchester Medics. In the March Semi at Turn Moss, Torprdo produced probably their most impressive performance of the season. A spectacular long range strike from Paul Ross, after a fine build-up, gave the Chorlton outfit a firsthalf lead. Resolute defending throughout the rest of the game clinched a 1-0 victory.

The Men at the Helm ~ On the look out for Icebergs on the Mersey? Simon Hartley ~ Co-Manager Attendance at the final is in some doubt as Simon continues to work his way through announcing starting XI for season opener. Andy King ~ Co-Manager When not instigating touchline disputes, Andy regales younger squad members with tales of war-time East Manchester.

MANCHESTER SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Torpedo Chorlton ~ Player Profile Steven Delaney ~ Goalkeeper. A late-season arrival who possesses all the attributes needed to be a Torpedo goalie, namely two working arms and UK residence. David Stubbs ~ Defender. The club’s interim fitness co-ordinator has seen off multiple challengers for the right-back slot, albeit in suspicious circumstances. Thomas Crawshaw (Defender) Veteran full-back forced in season-long emergency circumstances to pioneer the “false six” role with mixed results. Pete Campbell ~ Defender/Midfielder. Another reluctant defender; the Turn Moss ‘Messi’ nevertheless has added shanking the ball over the touchline to his impressive repertoire of skills. Tom Ashworth ~ Defender. The classy stopper’s first choice status is only ever threatened by regular sabbaticals for his hamstring to find itself. Chris Taylor ~ Defender/Midfielder. Aerially dominant cheese-hawker held together by rubber bands, clingfilm and Ralgex. Luis Cardoso ~ Defender/Midfielder. Versatile Portuguese import has settled quickly and is now indistinguishable from any English clogger. Jon Hall ~ Midfielder – Captain. Last of the club’s original Geordie mafia, rarely found on his feet in any situation. Pablo Valls ~ Midfielder. Brings an unmistakeable Iberian influence, with his mix of fine technique, cynical brutality and chronic oversleeping. Louis O’Connor ~ Midfielder. Local youth product possesses good strength, quick feet and £5,000 worth of West Ham training kit. Adam Hancock ~ Midfielder. Apprentice currently embroiled in ugly dispute with managerial team over lack of playing time. James Robinson ~ Midfielder. Deceptively competent wide-man out with longterm injury, believed to be suffered in unfortunate celebratory post-goal leap incident. Gamma Tembo ~ Midfielder/Forward. Parenthood has resulted in the league’s most popular Zambian scaling back his daily football commitments to a mere 15 hours. Richard Cameron-Williams ~ Midfielder/Forward. 174th in line to the throne, a powerful runner who occasionally takes the ball with him as well. Arrey Tabetando ~ Midfielder/Forward. Fleet-footed medic regularly witnesses distressing scenes in his thankless occupation of chasing after passes from the Torpedo defence. Paul Ross ~ Forward. It’s the second stint at the club for the faux Italian, deadly from 25 yards, less so from 2.5. Tom Delaney ~ Forward. Young striker who drags opposing centre-backs all over the pitch, where his shooting attempts frequently end up.

The MSMFL Division One ~ Season Review Beechfield United have led the way a the top of the First Division all season Indeed the Salford based club were able to win nine out of their first ten games. Their only defeat in this period was a bizarre, high scoring, 7- 6 defeat at the hands of North Manchester FC - away at Maccabi Sports Club. Influential in them keeping ‘top spot’ has undoubtedly been ‘Beechys’ ability to keep playing, without any postponements, on their 3G pitch at Salford Sports Village. Then, in January, after the opening ten league games. North Manchester were able to beat Beechfield in consecutive Steeles Shield and MEN Cup games where they also restricted Beechfield from scoring. This dominance, in head to head games, continued at the beginning of February when ‘North’ went to Salford and defeated Beechfield 3 -2 in the league. The Achilles heel for North Manchester is that, whilst they have played to a high standard against the leaders, they have dropped points to other contenders. Nevertheless they have sat in second spot since the turn of the year. That’s because Beechfield United, good side that they are, picked themselves up and have won five out of six of the last league games, scoring twenty eight goals, with only four in reply. But, whilst this has been happening, Brushes Rangers Spartak and Manchester Medics have been making the late runs for honours for which they have both been famed. Add to the mix, a rejuvenated Torpedo Chorlton and the First Division has been highly competitive league, with a very good standard of football played throughout. Last weekend in their final league game Beechfield United travelled Dukinfield to defeat Brushes Rangers 3-1 to clinch the title. Congratulations to Beechfield United – MSMFL League Champions! NORTH MANCHESTER ~ Promise Second Season Success! North Manchester FC are in their second season under the management of Calton Jordan and John Coogan. They considered last season as disappointing because they finished in the bottom half of the division. But they did reach the Final of the Steeles Shield - only to be beaten by the League Champions, Beechfield United. This season they have really started to get it together. They were challenging for the league at one stage after a long unbeaten run - beating Champions and last years cup final ‘nemesis’ on four occasions. But a wobble has seen them lose ground on Beechfield. Nevertheless, they may yet finish as Runners-up. However, with some strong additions to the squad, they hope to gain some long overdue silverware tonight. And, with a few little tweaks in the summer, a big season is expected by all in the 2014/2015 season Semi Final Report: North Manchester FC 6 - Brushes Rangers Spartak 2 North Manchester met Brushes Rangers Spartak just a week after they were beaten by them 4-1 in the league. This was a completely different game. North Manchester had reshuffled, with Carlton Jordan dropping into centre back replacing Leon Jordan who was serving his first of a three match ban. The game started with North on the front foot with John Coogan repeatedly stretching the Brushes defence. He then fed his strike partner Lee O'Brien whose sharp shot was saved, but was followed in by Coogan for a tap in, O'Brien himself then grabbed a second, beating his man in the box and hitting another rasping shot that the keeper couldn't hold and only push into the net. The third goal soon followed. O'Brien, then Andy Long dribbled and passed swiftly in the Brushes half before feeding the ball to Andy Briggs inside the area. Briggs played a perfect first time pass into Long, who calmly chipped the keeper. In the second half Brushes briefly gained a toe hold in the game They won a penalty after North’s fullback Gill brought down the Brushes winger just inside the penalty area. The spot kick was duly converted by Scott Marshall. In past seasons, North Manchester might have allowed Brushes back in the game, but not this time. A quick counter attack found Duffy, who crossed to Coogan in the box; he rolled the ball to Long who made no mistake, beating the keeper at his near post, for his 10 th goal of the season. For North’s fifth Duffy was again provider with a perfect cross, this time for substitute Thongy, who met it with a clever header, just in front of the keeper. Brushes briefly rallied and got a goal back through substitute Adam Murphy. Carlton Jordan then got involved, calmly slotting in after yet another Duffy assist. Overall it was a fine performance by North Manchester, sweeping aside a very good Brushes team,

CHEADLE The REFEREE Team Eddie Aspin – Eddie has been with the MSMFL for several seasons and was Referee of the year in 2008/09 season. Word has it he recently returned to playing with Cartshift FC (We’d all pay to watch that) and on the day they won promotion ‘his other team’ Liverpool beat Man.City (sorry Blues, but they did also wallop the MancReds) - and he won ‘Play Your Cards Right’ in the pub. This prompted Mr Aspin to post on Face-book “If Carlsberg did days out - mmmmm” Daniel Cooney is ‘a chip off the old block’ following in the footsteps of his Referee father, Jimmy. Like his dad did, Daniel runs ‘Lines’ in the North West Counties League which can involve a fair amount of travelling. He Referees in the MSMFL and the Eccles Sunday League and is looking to gain promotion, to move up the Referee ladder – buy a fast car and travel the world! Adewumni Soneye is a fit lad and admits to being in his late 20s ? He is in his first year with the MSMFL. He got his Referees ticket in 2011 whilst serving in the Royal Navy. He was born in Islington-London but calls Manchester his ‘home port’. He’s has played as an amateur for Wythenshawe Town ‘B’, Manchester Rovers and Salford Victoria – and professionally for HMS Cambletown FC. He now works as an analyst and is studying for a postgraduate ‘masters’ in Terrorism and Security Studies. He uses his skills in conflict reconciliation to talk to players throughout games. Graham Warner – OK! Here we go again: Graham regularly performs the Referees version of ‘One Man and his Dog’ and continues to teach ‘Mitzi’ to ‘line’. Graham is a professional photographer, who is available for commercial projects and weddings – at least during the summer months. He has recently admitted to having an animal menagerie at home... Also that he is a ‘shed-man’... But does he use it as a kennel or a studio?
