EDITORIAL - PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES 1874 NORTHWICH – Saturday 12th July 1, 2014 and TRAFFORD FC – Tuesday 15th July, 2014

WELCOME to our first two pre-season friendlies at The Recreation Ground as we entertain 1874 Northwich [league newcomers last season] and near neighbours Trafford FC from the EVO-Stik Premier Division. There is more information on each of our visitors inside and both clubs and their travelling support are most welcome as our visitors as we look forward to testing our squad against quality opposition as we prepare for only our second season at this level and the added challenges of FA Cup and FA Vase football. 1874 Northwich had an exciting and dramatic first season in Division One of the NWCFL last season with a few similarities to our own experience the year before. As the season ended the club was third in Division One and had just missed out on promotion to the Premier Division having been edged out of second place and automatic promotion by Formby. However, Formby notified the league shortly after the season ended that they were unable to continue and resigned from the league, therefore enabling 1874 to gratefully accept the invitation to take the place of Formby in the Premier Division. A year earlier WEST went into the last home game of the season knowing a win over Irlam would secure third place and our own promotion. Although Formby won the league that season they were placed in a relegation position for failing ground grading requirements and so WEST took their place in the Premier Division. Although we had arranged this game before the promotion outcome was confirmed, we have nevertheless continued with the pre-season friendly as the respective club managers know each other well and enjoy a firm friendship as well as competitive rivalry for the coming season. Trafford’s last promotion was to the Evo-Stik League Premier Division in season 2012-13 and last season they finished mid table in that Division and also won a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Gigg Lane, Bury FC to lift the Manchester FA Premier Cup for the first time in their short but illustrious history. Garry Vaughan’s side started the game as underdogs against Hyde FC, opponents from the Conference Premier Division, and fell behind after just five minutes. However in the 37th minute Trafford strung together a great move ending with Tom Schofield chipping the ball over the Hyde defence and Martyn Andrews heading home to make it 1-1 which was the interval score. Trafford’s second half performance was a revelation as they mounted attack after attack and dominated possession. Quicksilver striker Shelton Payne began to torment the Hyde defence and in the 66th minute curled a magnificent free kick in off the crossbar to put his team ahead and send the large contingent of Trafford fans wild with delight. An upset was on the cards and looked likely until the 83rd minute when Hyde equalised with a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. In the penalty shoot-out Trafford secured a 4-2 victory to end a marvellous season with cup silverware in a season when they finished a creditable 10th in the Evo Stik League Premier Division. FC United of Manchester are the next visitors here on Saturday 19th July, kick off 3pm, when we look forward to another enjoyable game against another high profile team and another test for our squad for the coming season. This is the last of our first team pre-season games at home as we will be giving the pitch another two week rest from use before the league campaign starts in earnest on 2nd August. Our first home league fixtures are against Winsford United on Tuesday 5th August, kick off 7.45pm and then Ashton Athletic on Sat 9th August at 3pm. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT TODAY – PLEASE ENJOY THE GAME AND WE’LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AGAIN SOON. Rob Turley WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

From the Dugout… It only seems like five minutes that we were saying our goodbyes after our final game of the season at Silsden. We didn’t end the season in the way we wanted have wanted but overall we can be very pleased with the progress that we made in our first season in the NWCFL’s top flight. For managers the preparation for next season begins the day after the old one ends and we were no different. The management team and I were no different and we’ve been working throughout the off-season to ensure that we are have made the necessary steps to improve this season. If you’re reading this on the Saturday I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of 1874 Northwich to Brookurn Road… 1874 were promoted this summer to the Premier Division in their first attempt after to the unfortunate demise of Formby having chased them to the very final day only losing out on goal difference. Manager Ian Street and I are good friends and go back a long way, as this friendly had already been confirmed before their promotion was announced we were both happy to still play the game and we are sure that the game will be played in the right spirit as we work towards the beginning of the new season. …and if you are reading this on the Tuesday night I would like to also welcome the players, officials and supporters of Trafford FC. I’ve had friends at Trafford for many years and it’s brilliant to see a club that has come from the NWCFL reach the Evo-Stik Premier Division and more than hold their own. What the club has achieved in such a few short years is a great credit to themselves and should be held up as an example for all sides at our level who wish to progress. Off the field at West, our terrific group of volunteers have worked hard in the off season to ensure that this club continues to progress with the most significant being the Reserve and Youth teams admission to the Cheshire League and North West Youth Alliance respectively. On the management side of things we welcome Rob Madden into the first team to support myself and Steve Settle. Rob Madden did an excellent job with the Reserve Team last season finishing seventh in difficult circumstances whilst ensuring that more than half a dozen players made their first team debuts. In his place we welcome James Plowright from Knutsford FC who has a great coaching background for someone so young and has been very impressive so far. Finally, I would like to congratulate all the players who won awards at the Presentation Day in May, you can see them on the back cover of the programme, all of them throughout the club deserved their awards. I was particularly delighted to present the First Team awards to Tommy Walsh and Antony Potts (pictured) it has been great working with them. Enjoy today’s game. Andy Nelson

1874 Northwich… our visitors on Saturday 12th July It is probably something of a misnomer to describe the next few paragraphs as a history of our football club. After all, by its very definition, the word ‘history’ suggests that 1874 Northwich have a proud and glorious past that stretches over many years and its long-standing supporters can look back warmly over many past campaigns – good and bad – with a great deal of pride, nostalgia and fondness. But actually, nothing can be further from the truth! You see, 1874 Northwich has only been in existence since Thursday 15th November 2012! For on that night that the members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run, democratic operated and transparent club. For those who elected to follow this path, this decision was not easy. Indeed, for most it was heartbreaking as most who voted to set up 1874 had followed ‘The Vics’ loyally for many years, worked selflessly for the club and had shared in all its highs and lows (largely the latter!). But in the end, after numerous off the field sagas and financial controversies – which culminated in the loss of the hugely impressive Victoria Stadium – the majority decided that they could no longer identify themselves with the club that they had once loved and that something radical had to be done. There was an overwhelming desire to bring the game of football back as the central focus, to re-build links with the people and businesses of Northwich and to put control of this new club into the hands of those people who ultimately would have its best interests at heart – the fans. And so, the members came together and took the step of calling into existence their new football club. In keeping with its democratic structure, the name of the new club was decided upon by the members and is a conscious reference to the long and proud heritage of the Vics - which the followers of 1874 clearly wished to acknowledge. In a similar way, the club crest and colours are both a nod to the past but they are also sufficiently different to set 1874 apart from the oldest of the Northwich clubs. Indeed, since establishing 1874, its 200 plus members have very much concentrated on creating and reinforcing the individual identity of their new the club. This has certainly been helped by the amazing amount of 1874 leisurewear that the supporters have purchased since the first items went on sale in the spring of 2013. Within weeks of their launch, 1874 replica team shirts, coats, hoodies, umbrellas, scarves, base-ball caps, woollen hats and polo-shirts were common apparel in and around the town. Indeed, the sale of these and other 1874 branded goods reached five-figures in the first season alone! The months immediately after the formation of 1874 proved to be very busy as the members worked hard to convince a number of key organisations that ensure that the club was a viable proposition that could successfully operate a side in the National Leagues System. Firstly there was the seemingly simple task of registering the club with the FA and applying for membership of the North West Counties League. Next on the agenda was finding a home for the club and this was achieved in the March of 2013 when a two-year ground-share agreement was brokered with neighbours Winsford United. Finally, following an hour-long interview by the FA at St George’s Park, 1874’s application to join the First Division of the North West Counties League was accepted! During this period the club had also appointed former Warrington, Winsford and Ashton Athletic boss Ian Street agreed to become 1874’s first manager and he quickly started to assemble a playing squad that would be capable of competing in the First Division. As the summer progressed, the ‘good news’ stories about 1874 kept on coming. Firstly came the announcement that the club had agreed two-season deal with well respected local company Britannia Carpets to become the club’s main sponsors – a move that clearly demonstrates 1874’s desire to create a new and positive relationship with the business community in the Mid-Cheshire area. Next up was the news that the well respected voluntary organisation ‘Ciarans Cause’ were to become the clubs nominated charity for the next couple of years. The aim of this initiative is to raise funds to supply defibrillators to local schools and junior football clubs and, by doing so, help prevent the needless heartbreak that many families have had to suffer as a result of the tragic and needless deaths of their children from sudden heart failure.

Finally, all the hard work and effort that everyone had put in was to come to a head on the evening of Wednesday 10 July 2013 when 1874 played their first ever game against local side Lostock Gralam. Prior to this game, there was still a nagging doubt amongst many members whether we had “done the right thing” and if the fledgling outfit would be able to attract sufficient support needed to make the new club a viable proposition. We needn’t have worried. For, on that warm and balmy July evening, just short of 400 fans - the majority of who proudly sported the kit and colours of the new club - turned out to see the start of something different, something new and, most importantly, something that they had a direct say in! The first game ended in a 3-1 win for 1874 and better was to come three days later when in the club picked up its first trophy in only its second game by beating fellow fans-run club AFC Rushden and Diamonds 3-0 to lift the Supporters Direct Shield – a success that was highlighted on the front page of ‘The Non-League Paper’, Not bad for an eight-month old club! The next major occasion was the staging of the first competitive fixture on August 3rd when Oldham Boro visited the Barton Stadium. Just under 500 fans turned up to see a little bit of history being made and although they didn’t see their team start with a win - the game ended 1-1 – the sheer joy and enthusiasm for ‘their’ club that was demonstrated that afternoon was both obvious and abundant. This level of support wasn’t a flash in the pan either as during our first season 1874’s average home league attendance was 320 – which put the club in the top 100 best supported clubs in non-league football. This total was boosted by the record breaking attendance of 541 who flocked into the Barton Stadium in early October for the fanslead ‘Bring a Mate Day’ initiative. On the park, things were as impressive as Ian Street’s men hit the top spot in mid-October and remained in the thick of the promotion race until the very last week of the season. However, there was to be no fairytale ending to the clubs’ first campaign as previous seasons’ champions Formby pipped Ian Street’s side to the second promotion spot on goal difference. But just as we had resigned ourselves to a second season playing First Division football, news came through about the sudden and unfortunate demise of Formby and as a result the league management committee asked 1874 if we would be prepared to step up into the Premier Division – an offer that was readily accepted! Excellent progress was also made in both the Cheshire Senior Cup and North-West Counties League Cup with 1874 making their respective exits at the Quarter and Semi-final stages. The defence certainly played its part in 1874’s strong showing as just 28 goals were conceded in 36 league games, a point underlined by the fact that ‘keeper Matt Conkie was voted as ‘Keeper of the Month’ on no less than four occasions – a league record. At the other end, the hugely impressive Mike Brandon notched 37 goals, a performance that went a long way to him being picked as ‘Player of the Season’ by the fans at the end of year presentation dinner which was attended by 120 supporters, players and back-room staff. The supporters and players have also enjoyed a number of other well attended social events, the highlight of which is probably the 1874 Beer Festival which attracts over 300 people and raises over £3000 for the club! A 200+ club has also been established and the money generated from this initiative will help reduce the clubs reliance on gate receipts as its principal source of income. Off the field the club also continued its progress with relationships being developed and nurtured with a number of key stakeholders. And looking to the future, a Stadium Development Sub-Committee has also been formed with the remit of finding 1874 a permanent home in or close to Northwich. So, all in all, it has been a remarkable period of time since 1874 was born and everyone connected with the club are delighted with the massive progress we have made in such a short space of time. With our second season now upon us, we can proudly say that we have achieved what we set out to create – a sustainable, democratic, fans-run community-focussed club that we and the town of Northwich can be justifiably proud of. But we cannot – and do not intend to – sit on our laurels. The club is determined to continue to develop and progress, albeit in a sustainable and stable manner which will allow the club to grow and meet its stated aims and objectives.

Trafford FC… our visitors on Tuesday 12th July The club was formed in summer 1990, being the brainchild of David Brown, John Harrison, David Law, and Bill Whitten under the name North Trafford, sharing Shawe View with Trafford Borough Rugby League Club. After initially being denied entrance, a late withdrawal resulted in the club being invited to join Division 2 of the Mid-Cheshire League for 1990/91 season. The first game at competitive level versus Macclesfield College was won 3-1,leading to a finish in second place, and promotion to Division One. As a bonus the club obtained sole tenancy of Shawe View via a 30 year lease, and substantial ground improvements were undertaken. Summary of the following Years… 1990/91 Manager David Law took North Trafford to 2nd place in the Mid-Cheshire League Division 2 & were promoted to the Division One. 1991/92 saw progress continue on the field as 4th place was achieved coupled with a successful application to join. Division 2 of the North West Counties League. 1992/93 the club had another good season ending with in 7th place in the NWCL Division 2. 1993/94 a magnificent second half of the season in which 20 out of 22 games were won, resulted in 2nd place and promotion to Division One. Additionally the first trophy was won via a 3-1 victory versus Maghull in the Lamot Pils Cup. Promotion was dependent on further ground improvements resulting in the erection of floodlights and the South Stand, which was granted. 1994/95 was launched under the club's present name, ending in 4th place and defeats in the finals of the Manchester Senior and Carling Cups, progress being maintained the next season via 3rd place and reaching the last 16 of the F.A, Vase losing to the eventual winners, Brigg Town. 1995/96 Trafford had another successfull league programme finishing in 3rd place. 1996/97 was undoubtedly our most successful, winning the N.W.C.L. and gaining promotion to Division 1 of the Unibond League but losing out in the finals of the Manchester Senior Cup and the League Cup. David Law who had managed the club since inception was named N.W.C.L. Manager of the Year, and the Reserves won the N.W.C.L Reserve Division, the Reserve League Cup, and the Manchester Amateur Cup. 1997/98 saw an indifferent start but the club finishing 12th, and a further trophy was won, the Unibond First Division Cup, beating Lincoln United 3-1. 1998/99 started with the appointment of Mark Molyneaux as assistant manager to David Law, taking over the reins in the December, and guiding us to a final place of 14th. 1999/2000 Manager Mark Molyneaux along with his assistant Wayne Goodison guided Trafford to victory in the Unibond President’s Cup Final beating Whitby Town in the 2nd leg on their ground. 2000/01 Trafford finished the season with thirteen games unbeaten run placing them in 5th place, their highest ever league position in the club’s eleven year history. 2001/02 saw Mark Molyneaux resign to take over at fellow Unibond First Division side Chorley, with the club finishing in 15th place. Trafford then appointed Joey Dunn as the new manager. Season 2006-07 saw Trafford finish in 5th place in the NWCL Division One the club’s best campaign since 2001 when they finished in 5th place in the Unibond Division One. The season included a good run in the FA Cup, two players in the top 20 goalscorers in the NWCL, with Glyn Barker in 6th place with 34 goals & Troy Hayder in 16th place with 20 goals, & a end of season run of 17 games unbeaten to round off a marvellous season. At the end of the season sadly manager Danny Johnson decided to move up to the Unibond League with Ashton United, with our player Ged Kielty becoming Trafford’s ’new’ Player Manager, assisted by Lee Southwood & coached by Tony Coyne.

2007/08 With the new look management Trafford had one of their most successful campaign’s winning the Vodkat League Championship title by 11 points with a club record of 95 points to be promoted to the Unibond League for a second time after winning the title in 1997. From September 2007 Trafford went on a 29 league game unbeaten run including 18 straight wins which is a League record. Manager Ged Kielty was also voted Manager of the Year & the club won Programme of the Year. Centre forward Andy Lundy ended the season with 34 overall goals putting him in second place in the League goalscoring chart, but was the League top scorer with his 28 goals in Division One. His ‘sidekick’ Scott Barlow came close behind in fourth overall place with 29 goals. 2008-09 saw Trafford return to the Unibond League after an absence of five seasons. Manager Ged Kielty led the team to the club’s second Unibond League President’s Cup win beating First Division South Quorn 2-0 on their ground in the final. Trafford previously won the President’s Cup back in 1999-2000. Trafford’s striker Scott Barlow finished runner-up as the First Division North Overall Leading Goalscoring charts with 40 goals. Trafford finished in 15th place in the Division. 2009-10 former Trafford stalwart Garry Vaughan in the ‘hot-seat’ as Ged Kielty decided to step down as manager. During seven seasons in the 90’s Garry played a record 305 games for Trafford & is still the overall leading club goalscorer with 89 goals. In his first season as a manager at Unibond League level Garry along with his Assistant Manager Loz Greenhalgh guided the club to a creditable 12th place in the First Division North & were finalists in the Manchester County FA Premier Cup. During this season striker Scott Barlow scored 21 goals to became the joint overall club top goalscorer with a total of 89 goals in his three seasons at the club along with Manager Garry Vaughan. 2010-11 Trafford had a poor first half of the season, then Manager Garry Vaughan made a number of personnel changes including bringing back former Assistant Manager Wayne Goodison & the clubs fortunes changed finishing in a respectable 14th place. 2011-12 Trafford didn’t have much luck in any of the cup competitions & had a rollers coaster season in the First Division North finishing in 12th place. 2012-13 In Garry Vaughan’s fourth season as Manager along with his Assistant Wayne Goodison they led Trafford to promotion to the Evo-Stik League Premier Division, after winning the First Division North Play-Off final against Cammell Laird 4-2 on penalties aet on their ground.

From the Supporters Club… First of all…apologies about the lack of a monthly newsletter…or even a quarterly one. I started with good intentions, I managed one and I envisaged sending all you fine individuals out a monthly update of what was happening at the club. Unfortunately, between the programme and the website about a quarter of a million words were written ahead of it. Throw in the social media and the ability to remain both entertaining and engaging was well out of the door (some say will say they never walked in). I did start issue two, I promise, but it is still, to this day, a work in progress so I’ve christened this end of season special edition the supporter’s club yearbook. Hopefully between each programme becoming available online, that was for your enjoyment too, and the website being updated each day you know that we’ve finished a respectable 12 th place and advanced past the first round in both the FA Cup and Vase. It is a miracle of an achievement when you consider we lost the first five league games and only came off the bottom because Wigan Robin Park were beaten 8-0 by AFC Liverpool. I had a few Atherton Collieries fans texting me that night I’ll tell you! It’s been a good year with visits to dozens of new grounds, meeting hundreds of new people, witnessing some special performances and even performing the odd upset here and there. Best of all it has been great to see so many faces come down for the first time and then come back! That means that we are doing things the right way when it comes to being both friendly and welcoming. As for next season the good news is that I have brought on board two new people to share the load and assist (take over from) me in the running of the supporters club. I cannot confirm any details yet but there are plans in place to ensure that you get even better value for your money than you did this season (I’m hoping it’s going to be Richmond Botchey iphone cases for everyone!) In the meantime if you wish to lend a hand or get involved please let me know at westdidsburychorltonsc@gmail.com I hope everyone has a great summer, keep your eye on the website for pre-season friendly announcements and I hope to see you there in July for the first one. Thanks, Rob McKay

FA Cup, Vase and Youth Cup draws - 2014/15

The Roads to Wembley begin for another year at West as the draws for first qualifying rounds of both the FA Cup and the FA Vase. In addition to West’s Youth Team will enter the FA Youth Cup for the first time ever.

FA Cup In the FA Cup West will play in their first ever away cup tie with a trip to recently reformed Cammell Lairds 1907. Lairds, who at the end of last season voluntarily accepted relegation from the Evo-Stik First Division North, have reformed as a new club and re-entered the league in the NWCFL First Division. The tie will take place on the 16th August and the winners will receive £1,500 in prize money. The winners of the tie will face reigning NCEL Champions Brighouse Town at home on Saturday 30th August. Brighouse were crowned champions of the NCEL amassing an incredible 101 points and scoring 138 goals and now reside in the Evo-Stik First Division North. The winner will receive £1,925 form the FA Prize Fund. The winners of that tie will then face Ashton United in the 1st Qualifying Round at home on Saturday 13th September with the winner receiving £3,000 in prize money.

FA Vase In the FA Vase West receive a bye into the second qualifying round of the competition where they will face the winners of Rossington Main v AFC Blackpool. Rossington Main, of the NCEL First Division, and AFC Blackpool, NWCFL Premier Division, will face each other on Saturday 6th September before West take on the winners at Brookburn Road on Saturday 4th October. West previously faced Rossington in the Vase year with West scoring a late Lewis Schofield winner to secure a 2-1 victory and West’s first ever FA Vase win.

FA Youth Cup For the first time in their history West have entered a team into the FA Youth Cup and will face Wrexham away in the First Qualifying Round to be played in the week commencing Monday 22nd September 2014. This comes hot on the heels after the club’s youth team were accepted in the first division of the North West Youth Alliance.

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 promises to be another testing season as the club adjusts to life in the NWCFL Premier Division, improves its spectator facilities, adds new grass pitches and youth teams as part of its development plan, and aims for long term consolidation and stability at this level whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club.
