Y R U B S D I D WEST& CHORLTON AFC

WELCOME TO

May I extend a warm welcome to all our guests and particularly the players, officials and fans of AFC Liverpool, this game has been arranged at short notice to fill a blank Saturday in both clubs fixtures list, many thanks again to all involved at both clubs for making this happen. Today gives our first team squad another chance to take on opposition from a higher league and I am sure the players will benefit greatly from this game, following on so soon from the friendly game on Tuesday when we beat Rossendale United 2-0 away. The team played very well on the night showing the progress we have made this season and the strength of the squad Andy Nelson has been developing as we ourselves strive to move up the football pyramid. In our normal tradition we held a community bonfire which was a roaring success with over 520 people coming out on a wet weekend to enjoy the fun, my thanks to all our workers, on the entrance gate, to the stalls and in the clubhouse selling refreshments to the team setting off the fireworks.

Of course we are also excited by the developments off the field where the club has plans being considered by the Planning Committee next week for the redevelopment of Hardy Farm. Whatever the outcome additional facilities will be developed so our facilities will improve as we seek to develop our strong links with Oswald Road JFC and the wider community. We hope you enjoy today and the refreshments in the clubhouse after the game. Brian Cripps - Chairman

FROM THE

LSON

WITH ANDY NE

We asked Andy for this thoughts on the season so far after the friendly game at Rossendale United which resulted in a pleasing 2 – 0 victory. Arriving at a club in transition was always going to be interesting and this has proved to be the case, but we are developing both on and off the pitch, pleasingly we are learning to adapt to the different surroundings in this league that are very different for many of the management team and our players. Pre-season I was happy with the structure and intensity of the training and we took this into the pre-season friendlies and equipped ourselves very well against some though opposition. Our progress in the club is clear, the quality of players we have is pushing up the bar as we strive to get as far up the football pyramid as we can.

Any disappointments? Have I got disappointments‌ yes, I want to win every game and see all our teams to be at the top of their divisions! It is pleasing that the strength

4

we now have at the club has filtered through with the Reserves and Youth team toping their leagues. I am also confident that as we manage the high expectations we have set ourselves we will be pushing hard for promotion with the First team as well.

Andy, you must be a bit frustrated with the irregular game pattern and poor weather over the last month? Yes, this has been a challenge, but I have introduced a series of friendlies against teams from North West Counties and above, to help address this. The first resulted in a good performance all round and a good victory on Tuesday night, our possession and passing was very good in wet and windy conditions. I am delighted AFC Liverpool have agreed to the fixture today and I am looking forward to the game immensely.

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

The story of West Didsbury began in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent. They joined the Manchester Alliance League where they competed until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). The club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and changed its name to West Didsbury AFC The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first team were double runners up in League and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23. In 1927, the club lifted the Rhodes Cup by beating Davenport 2-1 in the final, and by the early thirties the team had finished runners up in 1931/32 for the fourth time. It was third time unlucky for West Didsbury (West) as they were beaten in the final of the Rhodes Cup by South Salford, who won the cup for six consecutive years – a feat unequalled. The first team succumbed to relegation in 1952, losing a play-off 3-1 to Rusholme, but bounced back as second division runners up the following season. The first team were relegated again in 1959/60 and had to wait six years to regain top flight status. Indeed, relegation to the third division was narrowly avoided in 1963/64. The first team finished runners up in 1965/66 and were back in the top flight, although were relegated again in 1968/69. In 1969/70 West win the Rhodes Cup for only the second time. They faced a Monton Amateurs side that had dominated the league for a number of years. Yet against the odds West equalised twice and scored the winner in extra-time for a famous 3-2 victory. Current Chairman Brian Cripps skippered the side that day and received the trophy in near darkness. In 1970/71 West are promoted after securing runners up spot. Relegation in 1972/73 and 1974/75 meant that the team were playing in the third division. In 1976/77 West beat Heywood GSOB from the first division 2-0 in the Whitehead Cup Final. Rob Turley scored both goals. The first team won promotion in successive seasons, 1987-89, clinching both divisional championships – losing only once in two seasons.

&

The second team were unbeaten champions of Division B in 1987/88 and the club won the Aggregate Trophy for the first time in 50 years. After several years of uncertainty the club were boosted when, in 1997/98, they kicked off the new season at their splendid new home at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won silverware again when they lifted the Murray Shield with the nucleus of our previously succesful junior team and followed up last season with one of our best recent seasons when the first team just missed promotion to the Premier Division and reached the Murray Shield Final.

The Manager - Derek Goulding Derek Goulding joined AFC Liverpool as manager of the club in the Summer of 2008. He is well known in the non league scene as a successful player and manager. A tough centre half, Derek started his professional career on the blue half of Merseyside as captain of Everton’s youth team, despite being a lifelong red. He won the Lancashire League with Everton Youth and made 12 reserve team appearances before being signed by Altrincham, short spells at Bangor City, Stafford Rangers and Oswestry Town followed, before a return to Bangor City that lasted six hugely successful seasons. A stay at Conference side Chorley FC led to Derek signing for Southport FC where he won the Northern Premier League, the Lancashire Senior Cup, and the Liverpool Senior Cup in a four year stay. He finished his playing career at Fleetwood Hesketh in the West Lancashire league following a stop at Halifax Town and a brief return to Chorley. Derek also served Burscough FC’s as youth coach and Reserve team manager before being called on to take over the hot seat with the club languishing at the foot of the Unibond Premier League table. Not only did he save them from relegation but he led them to the Conference North play off finals. He stayed at Burscough FC for three years, the highlight of which was his masterminding of a famous giant killing victory over Gillingham in the FA Cup. Derek is an “A” Licensed coach and his footballing philosophy is simple enough. “You have two choices as a manager,” he says. “Try to win, or simply try not to lose. I like exciting positive football, so I always try to win!!”
