EDITORIAL

3 December 2011- AFC Monton

November has been a terrible month for us as our mini run of 4 games unbeaten in October came to an abrupt end and the last few weeks have seen one problem after another resulting in a slide down the Premier Division table from 4th to 8th place. In the recent reverses against Hindsford, Dukinfield, Royton and Walshaw we have paid a very heavy price for conceding goals in the first few minutes of each half which has given us a mountain to climb in getting back into games. Last weekend it was the same sorry story against Walshaw when we had to come from behind just after kick off when we were punished for an early mistake and although we got back in the game with an excellent equaliser we didn’t convert our first half dominance into more goals. Then we got caught again in the first couple of minutes in the second half and when the 3rd followed about 20 minutes later there was just no way back from a dismal damp afternoon in Tottington. WELCOME AFC MONTON This afternoon it’s time for the return fixture against Monton and they are always welcome visitors to Brookburn Road. There is a long and varied history of encounters between our two clubs dating back several decades to when we were both members of the Lancashire and Cheshire League, albeit under slightly different names. AFC Monton became the club’s new name for the start of this season when they were also newly promoted to the Premier Division. So far they have been inconsistent, a bit like us, as they have adjusted to life in this very competitive league. However we know they will be out to avenge the 2-0 home defeat we inflicted in late October and we will need to concentrate for 90 minutes this time out if we are to get back to winning ways.

ENJOY TODAY’S GAME.

FROM THE DUGOUT Since my last notes I reflected on the journey we have been on over the last few years, both in terms of the players, facilities and non playing members at the club, all of which have been essential as we look forward to the exciting days ahead and prepare to raise the bar further. Looking closer at a disappointing November where we have had some bad results, I felt changes to the squad were necessary and five players left us to go to pastures new, I want to thank them for their support and efforts in the time they have been with us here (in some cases for a few years). This inevitably has impacted on the team as new players have come in and others have staked a claim to be considered on a regular basis. What has been very pleasing has been the team spirit and effort in our recent games when things haven’t gone quite to plan, this together with new players settling in at the club will ensure results improve. Finally, I am sure you were as shocked as the entire football community at the beginning of this week when we heard the sad news that Gary Speed had died, events like this make you reflect on life and put football into context, I met Gary at Bolton and certainly echo the sentiments of thousands of others, you couldn’t wish to find a nicer guy, our thoughts are very much with his family at this time Andy Nelson

This month the 200 Club winners are: £100 James Harris £60 Scott Jones £40 Kiefer Tallow

Reserve Team ‌ 19th November saw the second team play at home in a hard fought game against East Manchester. West started quickly moving the ball well all around the pitch, West created a number of chances forcing the East Manchester goalkeeper to make several important saves, Daniel Mclaughlin at the other end being a virtual spectator. Despite the territorial advantage in the first half West went in at half time with the score at 0-0. West again started the second half the way they finished the first and dominated play, going into a deserved lead from a free kick. East Manchester soon equalised from a defence error. With 15 minutes to go West went into a 2-1 lead from the move of the match, Danny Blaylock playing the ball down the left, Stephen Madden running onto the ball beating the defender and cutting the ball back to the edge of the box for Gary Lilley to drill the ball low into the corner of the net. Both Nicky Grimshaw and a returning John Crimes both came close to making it 3-1. Unfortunately another defensive error 5 minutes before time allowed East Manchester back into the game and the score ended 2-2. Saturday 26th November saw a change from the league programme with a cup game away to Beechfield United. West started well with Kyle Hendley and Miguel Garcia again dominating the midfield, the defence controlled the play moving the ball quickly from the back, with Tommy Hendley and Ruairi Quinn being the pick of the defenders. West went in at half time 1-0 up following a very good individual goal from Gary Lilley. Stephen Madden soon doubled the lead in a second half which again West dominated. Kyle Hendley made it 3-0 breaking from midfield. Jordan Casey coming on as a late substitute to make the score 4-0 and rounding of a very impressive result. Robert Madden

A Team Since the last programme report we have maintained consistency with another 6 points being added to the board. In November we had 2 away victories, 3-2 against Dukinfield Town which is always a tricky fixture and 2-0 at Royton Town, our only set back was a 2-1 defeat against Springhead. The league appears to be relatively wide open at this stage and it is hoped for positive progression towards the top end over the coming months. Chris Argent

Youth Team ‌ The youth team started the season late but has got up to speed quickly. There have been some pleasing performances overall and even in the games West lost we ve been competitive in them and not been thrashed. 30-10-11 v Cleaveleys. Lost 4-0. A disappointing result which flattered Cleaveleys. It was played away in Salford. No changing facilities, long grass, terrible uneven pitch with dog excrement. You get the picture. 6-11-11 v Broadheath. At 1pm an hour before ko Broadheath coach rings me to say Broadheath cant get enough for a team to play.Such is life in amateur football. No worries we ll get the 3 points and the unbeaten run continues. Thank you Chorlton! Last Saturday saw the club putting on its annual Community Bonfire and Firework celebration. This event has now become established as a real flagship Community Event as well as a principal fundraising event for the club. This year again saw several hundred people attend a well managed and hugely enjoyable evening. These included many families who are now regularly attendees as well as a number of people visiting Brookburn Road for the first time. Whilst we have been running the bonfire for a number of years now, the growth in the numbers of people attending the event and the positive feedback we receive has increased significantly over the past three years, with everyone agreeing that this was the best yet. Organisation of the event involved a significant number of club members taking responsibility for:      

Collecting admission monies Running the bar and beer table Selling sweets Setting off the firework display Stewarding the event Clearing up on Sunday

and the Club Committee offers its thanks to everyone of you. In addition, it would like to give a special Thankyou to a number of people who are friends of the club who also helped us on the night. These include: Margaret Scott, Anne Cooper, Isabel Turley, Laura Turley, Megan Meacher, Anna Morrison, Joe Traynor… and last but by no means least Paul Kierman for yet again building a stunning bonfire, and Mike Brough for helping on the night and in the clear up afterwards. A great effort all round and testimony to ourreputation and community offer when so many people again stayed local and loyal despite competing events elsewhere. Our Visitors – AFC Monton Monton Amateurs Association Football Club was formed in 1916 as a schoolboy team playing friendly games on Monton Green during the First World War when no organised football was available. In 1922 the club moved to play at a ground on Worsley Road, Winton and became one of the founder members of the now defunct Eccles & District League. In 1924 the club joined the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur League where it remained until 1985. After a slow start the club gradually increased it's influence and won the Aggregate Trophy three times and the League Championship eight times as well as numerous other league trophies. The seventies were Monton's golden years when with the advent of Eric Mullender as coach and the Mayo brothers as players the whole club had a period of spectacular success, winning a total of eighteen trophies including the much coveted Lancashire Amateur Cup, beating arch rivals St. Dominics from Liverpool 1-0 in the final at Wigan Athletic's old ground with Dave Mayo scoring the winning goal. In 1936 the club moved to play at the newly built Cleavley Playing Fields, Winton, provided by Eccles Corporation and stayed there until construction of the M60 motorway necessitated a move to Brookhouse Playing Fields, Eccles, in 1969. For many years the club had been looking to acquire a ground of its own and in the late 1970's managed to lease a site at Salteye, Liverpool Road, Eccles, from Salford City Council and with financial assistance from the Sports Council built changing accommodation there jointly with Mitchell Shackleton F.C.[now Irlam F.C.] in 1979. The two senior teams entered Divisions 1 and 3 of the Manchester League in 1985 with the second team being promoted to Division 2 in the first season under manager Jim Preston and the first team being promoted to the Premier Division the next season as well as being beaten finalists in the Manchester Amateur Cup, again under Jim Preston. The major successes since have been winning the Gilgryst Cup in 1998 with Kenny Davies as manager and the Open Trophy in 1990 & 1992 under Dave Muscat. At the end of season 2006/07 the first team were relegated from the Premier Division after several narrow escapes but under new manager Ron Hodkin made a quick recovery in season 2007/08 and were denied the league and cup double only in the last two games after looking favourites for most of the season. Finally we achieved our aim of returning to the Premier Division at the end of season 2010/11 in a very close finish. In 1995 the Salteye Park assets were sold to Salford Rugby League Club and the club moved to the present site at Granary Lane Winton, an 8 acre site with considerable development potential previously occupied by Eccles Town and Winton United. A ten year Development Programme was undertaken to expand and upgrade the facilities and broaden the club's activities to embrace a wider age range of people from the surrounding community. The burnt out clubhouse has been replaced with an all-metal sectionalised building purchased from Weaste C.C. which was dismantled and re-erected on site. Two mini-soccer pitches, and a junior pitch have been constructed and the senior pitch has had a drainage system installed. A large training area has been provided, the car park increased in size to accommodate 100 cars and the general appearance of the site improved. Action is now in hand to raise finance to commence Phase Three of the Ground Development Project, the total requirement being around £500,000. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

CLUB NEWS In the last programme we referred to the clear and explicit Vision of where we want this club to be and the next step on the way to getting there involves two initiatives which are now underway. The first is completion of the transfer of additional land to enable us to create another margin on the southern boundary of the ground similar to that next to the adjoining houses and we will be proceeding with work to erect new fencing and then remove the old 1960’s concrete post and panel fence. This is part of a wider plan to Improve Chorlton Meadows and further details are on the centre pages. The second is that an application has been submitted for membership of the North West Counties Football League for season 2012-2013 to ensure we meet the 31st December deadline. We have notified the FA and Manchester League of our intentions in this regard and now await acknowledgement of receipt of our application and details of arrangements for a ground grading visit from the ‘Counties’. This is another major step for the club as we continue to progress and we have also been invited to play Maine Road FC from the Counties Premier Division next Monday night at Brantingham Road at 7.45pm. CLUBHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS – Following your suggestions a new flat screen TV was installed at the end of July and we will now be screening live Premiership games after our Saturday home games. This has involved considerable ‘investment’ in new equipment and subscriptions for ESPN and Sky Sports 1 and 2. With increased running costs and membership subscriptions at the same low level the additional funds we need must come through the clubhouse and other events…SO… PLEASE SUPPORT these initiatives at your club as we all have a stake in its success!
