EDITORIAL

What a difference a month makes!! Last week was the fourth league fixture since our exit from the FA Vase and our tongue in cheek comment about concentrating on the league has proved correct. However we should not beat ourselves up over the Vase result as it was always going to be difficult against a well drilled team currently leading the West Cheshire League by some margin and last weekend they went away to NWCFL club Formby and won 1-0, to progress to the next round. October results to date have been really encouraging include away wins at Champions Gregorians [2-1] and AFC Monton [2-0] with the other games being the highly entertaining 2-2 home draw against Stockport Georgians and the 1-0 bore win over AFC Bury. This has pushed us up the table into 4th place level in all respects except alphabetical order with Old Alts. Ten points from twelve is great credit to the commitment of the players and management team. Today we welcome Hindsford to Brookburn Road for what will be a test of our recent improved form. They have been amongst the pace setters all season and will be anxious to respond to last week’s narrow defeat away at AVRO when they lost by the odd goal in a 7 goal thriller. There were only 6 Premier Division games last weekend as various teams had County FA cup fixtures and this was a golden opportunity for us to close the gap on the top teams, some of whom were threatening to pull clear of the pack. As it happened our victory at Monton resulted in a real boost to our league positions as we moved up into 4th spot with 2 games in hand on the new leaders AVRO. Other Premier results saw Gregorians get back to winning ways 2-1 against Wythenshawe Amateurs, as the only other side to record a home victory. There were away wins for AFC Bury who came way from Walshaw after a 3-2 win, Heywood St James who overcame Prestwich Heys 2-1 and Royton who defeated Springhead 3-2. The current league tables are printed inside as usual but another way of looking at performance is by points dropped to date. If that was the measure then East Manchester would be leading the way having dropped only 11 points, followed by Hindsford who have dropped 12 points, AVRO – 13 points and then ourselves and Old Alts having dropped 14. They say the table doesn’t lie and whichever way you look at we’re joint 4th!!” The reserves and ‘A’ teams have also had a good month and begun to climb their respective tables. The veterans are in good shape and sit top of the Cheshire Veterans League Premier Division, whilst the youth team of largely u-18 lads are finding life challenging in the Altrincham Youth League U-21 division. Anyway that’s the October round up thus far so enjoy the game today and don’t forget to put your clock back an hour tonight and get ready for the bonfire party next Saturday. ENJOY TODAY’S GAME.

FROM THE DUGOUT…

FORTHCOMING EVENT and CLUB NEWS

The reaction to disappointment is always the hallmark of a good team and I’ve been delighted with the reaction and response of the players and management team to the FA Vase setback at the end of September. In the following past 4 weeks we have taken 10 points from 12 available and this has pushed us back into a leading position in the division. However it’s still only October and with a heavy programme of fixtures until next March/April I can assure you we are taking nothing for granted in what is a very competitive league where the margins between success and failure are very tight.

COMMUNITY BONFIRE NIGHT – This not surprisingly will be on Saturday 5th November commencing from 6.30pm when the bonfire is lit. We need volunteers to assist with stewarding as in the past few years this event has attracted crowds of about 500 adults and children which means the club needs 10-15 people in addition to the Committee helpers. More detailed information will follow in next week’s programme.

We have again had to endure our fair share of injuries and unavailability with both Ben Simpson and Luke Lundy missing several games and at the other end of the field Lee Hendley has been struggling to shake off injury since pre-season, Tommy Walsh and Callum Jones have both missed the last 3 weeks and Danny Summers has been unavailable as he finishes his professional accountancy examinations.

CLUBHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS – Following your suggestions a new flat screen TV was installed at the end of July and we will now be screening live Premiership games after our Saturday home games. This has involved considerable ‘investment’ in new equipment and subscriptions for ESPN and Sky Sports 1 and 2. With increased running costs and membership subscriptions at the same low level the additional funds we need must come through the clubhouse and other events…SO… PLEASE SUPPORT these initiatives at your club as we all have a stake in its success!

However it has been good to see one or two new faces slotting into the side very well with Dean Thurston coming in up front and Andy Levandis gives us additional cover in midfield. Defensively we’ve been pleased to see Liam Coyne rejoin the ranks and his man of the match performance against Monton was impressive as was that of Gavin Lee. Today is another big challenge to us to get a decent result against Hindsford, who have been front runners and in the top 3 since the season started. They are a very good side and this game will help us hit a few honesty buttons and see just how much we are improving our consistency since the early weeks of the season. Andy Nelson

Our Visitors – Hindsford

Reserve Team … We were again away this time to sixth placed Prestwich Hays, our seventh away game in a row. We welcomed back Bobby Ashcroft following injury and Danny Blaylock coming into the squad following his excellent run in the A team.

Born during the Miner’s Strike of 1926 by bored miner’s, Hindsford Football Club started with no funds and no ground but lots of determination and grit, no shortage of which existed in the folk of that time. There was a boys team from before 1920 called Hindsford Church House which was a building near Swan Island but the only evidence of any links is the fact that quite a few player’s of that team were also founder members of the Hindsford AFC we know today.

Prestwich started strongly and had several early chances, however our defence held strong and we weathered the storm. Our midfield began to get a grip and after 10 minutes, following a poor clearance from the Prestwich keeper Kyle Hendley collected the ball in midfield, he passed the ball out wide to Gary Lilley who beat the full back and squared the ball to Stephen Madden to score. Within five minutes Migel Garcia picked Stephen Madden out on the Prestwich right with a 25 yard pass Stephen cut inside and beat the keeper on the near post for his second in a first half hat trick. After this things got a little nasty and a Prestwich player was sent off for kicking out at Tommy Hendley. In the second half Prestwich came back at us scoring an early goal to make it 1-3. This did not deter West and Gary Lilley made it 4 from a cross from Bobby Ashcroft. Bobby again broke down the right and was adjudged to have been brought down in the box and Gary stepped up to make the score 1-5. Prestwich pulled another back before Gary again scored his third to make the final score 2-6 to West. A rearranged fixture last weekend saw us play a rare home game against fourth placed Manchester Gregorians. Gregs took the kick off and following pressure from Gary Lilley on the Gregs left back he won the ball and chipped the oncoming centre back for Stephen Madden to score with a header in the first 23 seconds of the match. West dominated the game and came close with shots from Bobby Ashcroft and Gary Lilley but could not increase the lead and went in at half time 1-0 up. In the second half Gregs came at us more but our midfield and defence held strong with great performances from the spine of the team. We again came close to scoring with Nicky Grimshaw just putting over the bar from a corner and Theo Warmington making one of his trademark runs and forcing the Gregs keeper to push the ball onto the bar. We made the score line 2-0 following a one two between Stephen Madden and Gary Lilley who again chipped the Gregs centre back for Stephen to go round the keeper to score our second of the game. Two excellent performances beating teams higher up in the league.

Joining the Westhoughton League for the 1927-28 season see’s the first serious combat. Starting with no funds and a bare unenclosed ground at Print Shop Lane (the site of Fred Longworth School today) with no changing or washing facilities the officials and members began to show an astonishing enthusiasm to improve and develop the Club.By the end of the first Season the ground was partly enclosed, by the end of the 1928-29 Season the ground was fully enclosed with dressing rooms. By the beginning of 1929-30 Season the Lancashire Football Association had granted Full Membership to Hindsford AFC. It was recognised as one of the most progressive junior football clubs in the whole of Lancashire. None of this could have taken place without the generous help and encouragement of the local people and the massive efforts of the committee, members and friends of the Club. On the field Hindsford was developing quite a name for itself. In April of 1931 Hindsford played Astley & Tyldesley Collieries at Alder House ground on Good Friday in the final of the Tonge Cup a game watched by over three thousand spectators, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. The replay was played Friday 1st May 1931 at Westhoughton again in front of a few thousand people that saw Hindsford win the game 2-1 and win the cup for the second time of asking. The next Season 1931-32 saw Hindsford with two teams for the first time. One Team was entered into the Lancashire Alliance League playing in new colours of Green shirts with White collars and cuffs, while the Westhoughton team played in the usual colours of Red shirts and Blue shorts. So the Club as we know it today was formed and matured.

A Team Since the last programme report we have gathered four points with a good win against Walshaw and a . The squad is now becoming relatively well established and it is hoped that the next two consecutive home games will bring a maximum return against teams which they beat home and away last season. The league appears to be relatively wide open at this stage and it is hoped for positive progression towards the top end over the coming months. Chris Argent

Youth Team …

Results & fixtures - Reserves

West 5 v Flixton Juniors 3 The Youth Teams fourth match of the season resulted in us getting the first win under our belts. It ended up 5-3 after a highly entertaining match with both sides pushing forward at every opportunity. Against the run of play Flixton took the lead but it was a short lived advantage with Tucca equalising for West with the first of his three goals, a strike of the highest quality. He controlled the ball on his thigh inside the box, swivelled and volleyed it into the top corner. The other 2 goals weren’t bad either! One a shot from 20 yards out , and then after a huge melee in the Flixton defence Tucca stroked the ball in from edge of the box into an empty net. No chance of him taking ball home. . .Club finances wont allow that!! However,it wasn’t just a one man show.Danny Griffiths and Greg chipped in with a couple of goals and overall it was a great performance from the lads. West showed that they can compete at this level and kept going strongly for the full 90 minutes. More performances like this and we will be moving to the top. Mike Lewandowsk
