Editorial & Welcome to… Winsford United Welcome to today’s game against Winsford United, one of the Cheshire ‘town’ teams in the Premier Division, and a club with a proud non league tradition dating back to 1883. The Winsford club website refers to its fame for spotting players over the years who have then progressed into the professional game. More recently this has included international honours for ex-blue Lois Maynard, currently playing with Tranmere Rovers and who made his international debut for St Kitts and Nevis in a 1-0 win in a friendly against Andorra last November and then won a second cap in a 0-3 defeat against Estonia, in Tallinn, also last November. Born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, Maynard played for Daisy Hill, Chadderton, and Flixton before joining Winsford for the 2012-13 season followed by 2 seasons at FC Halifax Town prior to joining Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer last May. There may not be any full internationals featuring this evening but all our games against Winsford in recent seasons have been keenly contested affairs. The first game was in August 2013 when we lost the midweek home game here 1-2 and subsequently also lost the away game at Winsford 0-2. Last season we again hosted Winsford for our first midweek home game of the season when goals from Malkin, Mason and a worldly from Lewis Schofield saw us 3-0 winners in a game which we completely dominated. However, Winsford turned the tables in the midweek game at The Barton Stadium last February winning 4-1 against an under strength West team which was further reduced to 10 men during the game. This season Winsford also won the first Saturday fixture between us this season 1-0, in a game when West were unable to turn dominant possession into goals and were left ruing several missed chances as Winsford scored the decider with a fluke goal a couple of minutes before the end. Winsford started February in good form with an impressive 4-1 away win at Cammell Laird but followed up with only one point, a 2-2 draw against Congleton from three successive home games. The other two saw 3-0 wins for Darwen and then 1874 Northwich. Prior to the February games their home form has kept them away from trouble with only 2 home defeats in 11 games whereas away from home it’s been 4 wins from 14 games before last weekend’s trip away to AFC Blackpool. WEST by contrast have lost more home games than most very early in the season, but rectified matters with some excellent away performances. It will be intriguing to see who comes out on top this evening – the team which often struggles to win at home or the one which struggles to win away. We welcome everyone associated with Winsford United to the game today and look forward to an entertaining game.

MATCH DAYS AND GROUND SAFETY The Ground Safety conditions printed in every match programme refer to several aspects which we ask spectators to read and adhere to at all times. This includes keeping the area in front of the covered seating and stand clear at all times. This is where the ‘No standing in front of seating’ notices are. Normally everyone respects this but unfortunately we have received a recent complaint following the home game against Colne, when one of our older regular supporters had his view from the stand obstructed by two people standing in front of him. Despite requests to the two people to move they refused, causing distress and inconvenience to the spectator, who is disabled. We want everyone attending games here at The Recreation Ground to have an enjoyable match day experience that makes them want to come again. In particular, please respect the ‘NO STANDING’ notices and keep the area in front of the clubhouse completely clear at all times. Thank you again for your magnificent and growing support, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good Afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this evenings fixture against Winsford. It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome their management team, players, officials, and fans for what will be a tough game in the NWCFL Premier Division. Winsford come into today’s game in 15th position, and will be looking to close the gap between them and us. We will be looking to build on our excellent recent performances and cement our place in the league’s top 5. It was obviously very pleasing to look at the league table on Sunday evening and see us sitting in 5th position. An appropriate reward for the hard work and commitment that has gone into this season, particularly from my players! The game against Padiham followed the pattern of some of our recent away performances. Padiham had enjoyed an upturn in form and had drawn with EVOSTIK Lancaster City during the week leading up to the game so we knew it would be a tough fixture. At times this year our away performances have been exceptional. I think when teams are expected to take the game to us it really suits our style of play. In the end we won 31 but anyone present at the game would tell you we could have scored at least 5 more. There were plenty of positives to take away from the game. Firstly it’s another 3 points towards our target of 70. Additionally, having gone 1 nil down against the run of play it would have been easy for the lads to get their heads down or bemoan their luck. Instead they rolled their sleeves up and absolutely battered Padiham in the 2nd half! This week I’ve had lots of messages of congratulations from friends in the game in recognition of our good form. Both our management team and our players know and buy into the fact that 5th in the NWCFL Premier Division is not success for us. We certainly won’t be resting on our laurels or getting the cigars out just yet! Brocks, Steve Eck, Rob and I have been

looking at our squad more closely in the last few weeks and we will continue to do so from now until the end of the season. It’s important that the boys show us that they are capable of putting a serious run together, with a level of consistency that allows us to win games. This test will come in the run-in as we are still to play Linnets, Colls and Colne all away from home. It’s fair to say we can have a pretty big say in who wins the league. Selfishly, I don’t really care who wins our league, I want us to show in the games from now until the end of the season that we have what it takes with our current group to be in a position to challenge in 12 months’ time. If not we will be looking to add to our group and strengthen for next season. On the injury front we have been delighted to get Matt Eck back in the team last week. Matt has been an outstanding performer for us this season at centre half and it will give us a great boost to get him back in there. In addition Richmond Botchey and Scott Jones are both stepping up their recovery and have re-joined training sessions and although we are taking Winston and Paddy’s advice on a weekly basis we are hopeful that they may return to action in early March. Looking forward we now have 13 league games remaining and to hit our target of 70 points we still need 24 (8 wins). With only 5 of these games at home we will have to be at our very best, starting with tonight! Thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

West 2 Silsden 1 …match report West made it seven wins from their last 10 games with a hard fought 2-1 win at home to Silsden. With Manager Steve Settle away, Head Coach Steve Brockley took charge for the afternoon but was dealt a blow as Joe Shaw and Ben Richardson were re-called to their parent club Glossop North End. Matt Eckersley was still out with an Achilles injury whilst Scott Mason was also unavailable after impressing in the previous week’s 6-2 win at AFC Liverpool. In their place West Ben Steer and Gary Lilley returned to the starting line-up whilst they were given the boost of a returning Rick Gleave to the bench. There was also a debut appearance for Paul Socha at left back. Silsden themselves were buoyed by the return of former club favourite James Gill to take the position of manager the previous weekend. Having played so many games in recent weeks during the wet weather the groundsmen deserved much credit for getting the game on but the conditions made for a heavy pitch which prevented both sides from gaining an early foothold in the match. The game’s first chance came on 7 minutes via a set piece as Steer’s long throw into the box found the head of Ash Woods but he could only find the hands of the Silsden goalkeeper Daniel Thorpe. Silsden almost responded immediately as a long ball over the top from Thorpe found Hollindrake through one-on-one but Socha recovered well and was able to hold him up before Mark Rogers cleared the danger. On 15 minutes West had their first clear cut chance from open play as a Matty Kay cross from the left was fired across into the path of Nic Evangelinos, his first touch brought it under control but he fired over from the edge of the area. 10 minutes later Kay almost broke the deadlock himself as he headed just over from another Steer throw-in. The first meaningful save of the game came on 26 minutes as an Evangelinos cross found Steer at the far post but his first time volley was superbly blocked at the near post by Thorpe. From the corner Woods thought he’d put West in front but his volley was cleared off the line. On 28 minutes West took the lead as a deep cross was curled to the far post from the right by Ben Steer and Evangelinos was on hand to

volley it first time back across goal inside the far post, a brilliant cross and finish. On 32 minutes the first yellow card was awarded to Joshua McNulty for a very late challenge on Lee Gavin. West continued to press and Ash Woods had an effort parried away at the near post after he’d broke into the box having turned his man. From the corner Woods had another header held by the goalkeeper but he wouldn’t be denied as on 37 minutes he made it 2-0 as he drove down the right hand side and fired his shot past the goalkeeper at the near post. It would get worse for Silsden as McNulty was then shown a second yellow card for a high two footed challenge on Lilley leaving the Cobbydalers forced to play for more than an hour with 10 men. Silsden didn’t give up and on 41 minutes Hayden Buckley-Smith was called into action holding a curled effort from the edge of the area. West should have made it three before half time as Ash Woods broke through one-on-one, his shot was blocked by Thorpe but the rebound fell to Evangelinos whose effort was cleared off the line and Matty Kay struck the crossbar with the third effort. In the second half West continued where they’d left off in the first half as they looked to increase their advantage. On 51 minutes a superb pass from Rogers released Steer down the right, the young winger found his way into the penalty area and forced another good save from Thorpe in the Silsden goal. A minute later Gary Lilley went close with his long range effort deflected just over the crossbar. From the corner Evangelinos should have made it three as he fired volleyed from 12 yards out after the cross had been dropped into his path. On 56 minutes the Lilley broke the offside trap and was again denied by the Silsden goalkeeper with a brilliant save one-on-one. Silsden were defending strongly and keen to try and hit West on the break despite the man disadvantage but Christopher Wademan was only denied a certain goal by a world class challenge from Rogers after Buckley-Smith had kicked it straight to the forward. It was a sign of their intent and on 63 minutes Silsden pulled a goal back as a West attack broke down, a Wademan latched onto a ball over the top from Captain Joe Mitchell, the forward found his way into the penalty area with Potts covering but

the striker managed to turn his marker and fire a low shot into the bottom corner seemingly going through the West goalkeeper on its way in. Suddenly it was game on and West struggled to find their rhythm as Brockley changed it up replacing Evangelinos, Lee Gavin and Steer with Jonny Poizer, Sam Dee and Rick Gleave. The last 30 minutes became nervous and tense as Silsden grew in confidence whilst West’s flowing passing football escaped them as they tried to overplay in the deteriorating conditions. On 84 minutes Silsden were reduced to nine men after Callum Jones and Kevin Ryan had exchanged shoves following a challenge from

the Silsden centre half. Callum Jones was shown a yellow card whilst the Silsden goalkeeper was also shown yellow for racing out of his goal to get involved. The decision from the referee and linesman was too much for the goalkeeper who was then dismissed for swearing at the linesman and had already removed his gloves and shirt before the referee had brandished his card. The last five minutes (plus five added for stoppages) saw little in the way of goal mouth chances for either side as Silsden continued to press for their second as West were content to allow Gary Lilley to drive the ball forward from deep to run down the clock allowing West to secure three points that lifted them to a season high 5th.

Padiham 1 West 3 …match report West registered their third consecutive win in February and stretched their unbeaten run away from home to four as they came from behind to beat Padiham. It was West's first visit to the home of the 2013 NWCFL Champions, having beaten them at home in September and they made just one change with Matt Eckersley back in the side following his Achilles injury along with Paul Socha retaining his place at left back after impressing in his debut against Silsden.

yards. West followed this with arguably their best chance of the half as Lee Gavin found himself in the six yard box un-marked two minutes later with the midfielder trying to bring down Woods cross but his touch took the ball away from goal and Padiham survived. In first half stoppage time West broke from a Padiham attack, playing Woods into the penalty but the striker fired his shot into the side netting at the near post to bring an end to a high tempo game albeit one with few chances.

West were looking to finish the month of February with a 100% record whilst Padiham were looking to put their mid-week Lancashire Trophy Semi Final penalty shoot-out loss against Lancaster City behind them and it showed from the opening minute as both sides got out of the blocks quickly. It was the home side who created the game’s first chance in the opening minute when Padiham’s Kieron Pickup fired a shot well over from long range. On 4 minutes Christopher Turner’s long range effort was fired comfortably into the hands of the West goalkeeper Hayden Buckley-Smith.

From the restart West fell behind almost instantly as Anthony Potts misplaced his clearance straight to the Padiham striker Cookson who Potts managed to force wide as he raced towards goal. However his cross/chipped shot managed to deceive Buckley-Smith in the West goal who could only tip it back into play off the bar and Kieron Pickup fired it home on the line.

Whilst West matched Padiham in the opening stages they began to take control of the game and their first chance came on seven minutes as a ball was pinged to Matty Kay in the middle just outside the penalty area; who tried to hook it into the top corner with his left foot but the shot was narrowly over. West grew in confidence and five minutes later a Callum Jones cross found Nic Evangelinos at the far post; however Michael Donlon in the Padiham goal raced out quickly and Evangelinos could only fire his shot wide of the post. On 15 minutes another cross from the right found Kay in the middle but his header, from a difficult angle with the ball going away from him, was flicked wide of the far post. West continued to press as Lee Gavin and Gary Lilley grew into the game and controlled the middle of the field with greater influence. On 24 minutes Donlon was called into his first save of the game as Ash Woods burst in the penalty area on the right hand side pulled the ball back low to Matty Kay who forced a good save by the goalkeeper with his legs. The pace of the game didn’t relent as both sides search for a goal and on 42 minutes Matty Kay went close firing just over from 30

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

The lead would last just three minutes as with almost West’s next attack they levelled when the ball was switched from the right wing to Matty Kay on the left wing and the forward curled a wonderful effort into the top corner just inside the far post to bring West level. On 52 minutes West were ahead as they broke down the left, the ball was played into Gavin on the left wing and his low cross reached Lilley at the far post who fired his shot past the onrushing Padiham goalkeeper. It was Gary Lilley’s first goal of the season and his first since scoring in a 2-2 draw with Maine Road on December 27th, 2014. The goals lifted West and on the hour mark West went close again as Evangelinos raced onto an under hit back pass to the Padiham goalkeeper, he rounded the keeper and played in Woods but was denied by an excellent save from the Donlon. On 70 minutes Woods had another effort as he found the ball on the right, outpacing the defender, cut inside to the penalty but dragged his shot wide of the near post. Two minutes later West went close again as another flowing move was denied by a superb block before Donlon again came to Padiham’s rescue diving on the ball in the goalmouth scramble. It was made 3-1 on 72 minutes as a Matty Kay cross found the head of Matt Eckersley who capped his return from injury by powering a header beyond the Padiham defense for his fourth goal of the season. From that point there

was only winner despite Padiham’s attempts to chase the game West were able to hit them on the counter with Ben Steer twice denied when put through albeit his second effort blocked on the line by a hand. Woods, who’d done everything but score, went close again as West broke from a corner, some quick passing put

Woods through but saw his shot roll inches wide of the post. Despite a late chance from a Padiham free kick West comfortably saw out the final minutes of the game to register their third consecutive win, their fourth consecutive away win and their eighth away win of the season, the most by the club in the NWCFL Premier Division.

History of Winsford United Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913 but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with under Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the glory days on Non-League football when crowds of over 3000 were the norm. In 1959 Winsford won the Cheshire Senior Cup against Ellesmere Port Town in front of a 12,000 crowd at Gresty Road. Under John Williams in the 1970’s they had the most successful period in their history winning the Cheshire League and the Challenge Cup on several occasions. In 1974 they reached the Senior Cup final again, this time against the then-mighty Macclesfield Town. The final was an epic with three replays and the Silkmen only clinching it after extra time in the fourth match. All the ties were played in front of crowds of over 3,500. The Blues won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1980 with a 4-1 victory over local rivals Witton Albion. The goalkeeper in that final was Neville Southall. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as Winsford United won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, MidCheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Winsford United have a pedigree of producing fine players who have gone on to perform at a higher level. The likes of Wayne Collins and Andy Oakes have come through the ranks, netting the club transfer fees and sell-on clauses which have been used to improve the infrastructure of the club amongst other things. A period of consolidation in the 2000’s was ended with relegation to Division Two, and with it, a change of policy to concentrate on recruiting and developing local talent. To this end Dave Twite was brought in as Manager in 2003 and three successful seasons followed, however, promotion was missed each season by just a single point. The Last Ten Seasons 2006/2007: Chris Willcock and John Flanagan took over the helm in 2006 and secured promotion. However, the duo moved on to Woodley Sports at the end of the season, taking with them the core of the side. 2007/2008, 2008/2009: This paved the way for two seasons under Joe Gibiliru and he marshalled the side to a respectable 12th place finish in the first season but the second season saw the Blues saved from relegation only in the last match of the campaign. 2009/2010: There followed an unsettled season that started with Terry Murphy in charge and then Mike Alcock and Tony Ledwards took over the reins. With relegation staring them in the face Dave Twite returned and along with Mike Alcock they saved the Blues from what had looked like certain relegation. 2010/2011: The club re-appointed former Manager Chris Willcock, who oversaw a successful start to the season, but in February there was to be a feeling of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Assistant Manager Ian Street in charge. The club finished the season in a creditable third place. A memorable night at the end of the campaign saw a 1-0 victory in the League Challenge Cup over promoted and hot favourites New Mills.

Winsford United History continued 2012/2013: There followed a season with Ian Street in charge and the end of the campaign saw the team finish in a creditable seventh place. 2013/2014: In close season Lloyd Morrison took over the reins coinciding with plenty of good news off the pitch... Winsford Town Council became the club’s main sponsor, a relationship that promised to last for many years. The season was one of the most successful for years with the club finishing 5th in the league and defeating Northwich Victoria in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. 2014/2015: However, with things on and off the pitch seemingly going so well the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC and he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. This led to an acrimonious situation between the two clubs with Mossley unable to register the players and Winsford refusing to allow their dual registration. Eventually an agreement was reached on Winsford’s terms. Eddy Haslam took over the hot seat and incredibly cobbled together a side to begin the campaign well, including runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase. However, a poor run of results saw Eddy leave by mutual consent paving the way for Rob Byrne to take charge of The Blues. There was also a satisfying end of season victory over Congleton Town in the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. 2014-2015: Rob Byrne continued as manager in the next season which saw mixed fortunes but in the end the team finished in a respectable 12th place.

2015/2016: The summer of saw a frenzy of activity off the field with much work being undertaken on the pitch in the hope of resolving the problems with flooding that blighted much of the previous season, particularly important with 1874 Northwich agreeing to stay at the Barton Stadium for a further two seasons. The new season also saw two important developments within the community with an Under-21’s team being entered in the Cheshire Under-21’s League and the welcoming under the Winsford umbrella of Winsford Wolves VIFC, a visually impaired team. Three months into the season the Blues found themselves without a manager when promotion at work led to Manager Rob Byrne reluctantly resigning the post. Although there were several high profile applicants the position was handed to long time Winsford stalwart Lee Duckworth and he took over as Player/Manager. He immediately began rebuilding the team and concentration was placed on fitness and discipline.
