WcT’S aRTiSTic DiREcToR’S MESSaGE 2 Pianos 4 Hands is one of the most successful Canadian shows ever created. It has toured around the world and recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary. It is a success because of its great piano playing, its great script, and its incredibly talented performers, but mainly it is a success because we can all relate to these guys. We have all had a dream, whether it’s to be a concert pianist or an NHL star. And we’ve all had to deal with practicing when we didn’t want to, going to lesson after lesson and dealing with teachers and coaches that inspired or intimidated us. It is so easy to see ourselves (or our children!) in these incredible characters that Richard and Ted have created. Here are some amazing facts about the show… Since its humble Toronto premiere, 2 Pianos 4 Hands has had nearly 4,000 performances at 175 different theatres throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia/New Zealand and South Africa playing to approximately 2 million people. The production has played Off-Broadway and in London’s West End. To date, 2 Pianos 4 Hands has been translated into four languages — French, Japanese, German and Finnish. Every playwright, director and performer that creates a new theatre production hopes that it will have a long, fruitful life and be seen by audiences everywhere. 2 Pianos 4 Hands is one of those rare shows that actually accomplished that. It’s a true Canadian theatre success story. And tonight you’ll get a chance to experience the virtuosic piano playing, humour and heartfelt storytelling of this incredible production right here on our Sagebrush stage. It is a great pleasure to welcome my friend Richard Greenblatt here to WCT to direct this production and to welcome Tom Frey, Richard Carsey and the whole 2 Pianos 4 Hands team to our stage. Many thanks to Colin at Marquis Entertainment for moving mountains (or at least, moving grand pianos over mountains) to make this production possible. We’re so proud to partner with the Kamloops Symphony to bring this incredible Canadian theatrical sensation to you. Enjoy the show!

Daryl Cloran Artistic Director PS - I hope you’ll join us for the rest of our amazing season. Next up is The 39 Steps, a zany combination of Hitchcock thriller and hilarious comedy! It’s a ton of fun!

kSo’S MuSic DiREcToR’S MESSaGE Recently I attended the Western Canada Theatre production of Liberation Days on a Thursday and on Saturday, the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts. Both were wonderful events! Liberation Days was exquisitely cast, designed and performed. The Kamloops Symphony presents equally exciting and moving performances. The two organizations have evolved and matured together and create an artistic environment that the City of Kamloops and the region enjoy and value. When Daryl and Lori asked if the Kamloops Symphony would like to be co-presenters of 2 Pianos 4 Hands, it took very little thought to agree. The presentation is theatrical, but the concept and subject matter is musical, so it is a logical collaboration. 2 Pianos 4 Hands has been performed around the world and is one of the most successful Canadian plays ever created. The story of two young pianists following a dream is a common tale in the musical arts, and the final humbling realization that greatness may be out of reach is also not unknown. What creates the interest is the growth of the dream, the growth of the artists and the need to deal with life as the growth takes place. The performers and the story are brilliant. Italians like Mozart are also perennially popular. But what of instrumental music? Every string player has, during their developing years, come across Corelli (1653-1713), every brass player has played Gabrieli (1554-1612), and every woodwind player has played some Vivaldi (16781741). Choirs sing Montiverdi (1567-1643), Palestrina (1525-1594) and Gesualdo (1566-1613) and pianists play Scarlatti (1660-1725). There is also the fact that the finest stringed instruments ever made were created in Italy. Guarneri del Gesu

independence and importance of secular interests were shown in the continued growth of vernacular literature: Dante’s Divine Comedy (1307), Boccaccio’s Decameron (1353) and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (1386) were some of the great literary landmarks of the fourteenth century. These publications heralded the arrival of Ars Nova, a treatise written by the French composer and poet, Philippe de Vitry. The term was so apt that it has come to be used to denote the musical style which prevailed in France through the first half of the fourteenth century. Italian con’t on page 21

kSo & WcT PRoFiLE:

LoRRaiNE aND WiLF FRoESE Kamloops Symphony and WCT share some of the same incredible donors and subscribers, such as Lorraine and Wilf Froese, whose years of support have enriched both our companies and community. Your family is very involved in the arts. Why was it important to raise your children to have an appreciation for the arts? Arts is important for a full-rounded person. To be able to express yourself is cool. We made music with our kids, and that had a big impact. Music and theatre with them, they got into them. Our older son was in Oliver and Anne of Green Gables. When you participate in the arts, you have that special connection. You have a deeper experience when you go to see a play or music, whether you continue on in the arts or not. What are some of your favourite memories of theatre and concerts? We really enjoyed the Beethoven Festival [that KSO presented last season]. To focus on a specific composer, to delve a little deeper, that was neat. Jeans ‘n Classics was great, too, because people who do not normally come to the symphony were there. We also really enjoyed the WCT musicals where the community auditioned, such as the open call for Oliver and Anne of Green Gables. Les Misérables was great too. We just love the variety and types of plays WCT chooses, and the sets are amazing. What are the benefits of donating to, subscribing with or sponsoring WCT and KSO? You’re helping to create a vibrant community. As a sponsor you are able to know that there is something for everybody in our town. Anything else? We’re looking forward to the new venue that everyone has been talking about for years and years—a new performing arts centre, that will specifically be a centre for music and theatre.

Mozart composed his first piano solo at age five, and could actually write music before he could write words. 19

2 Pianos 4 Hands

aND iTS MuSicaLLy coMEDic/ DRaMaTic STyLE Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt’s 2 Pianos 4Hands, which has been performed nearly 4,000 times in 175 countries since it premiered in 1996 at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre, has become a classic of Canadian theatre. This seems an appropriate time to explore the characteristics of Canadian musical theatre. The Kamloops Symphony—Western Canada Theatre co-presentation of 2 Pianos 4 Hands is in tune with WCT’s focus this season on the integration of music into theatre; the 2014-15 season began with Closer Than Ever and will end with another Canadian blend of music and theatre, Are We Cool Now? I confess to having previously made steps toward defining Canadian musical theatre on these pages, although not since 2006, with Paul Ledoux and John Roby’s Hot Flashes. Let’s call that consistency and continuity, shall we? Although some of the play’s content reflects its Canadian origins, 2 Pianos 4 Hands does not tempt one to analyze it in terms of the Canadian identity, psyche, or zeitgeist. However, it is in the style of Dykstra and Greenblatt’s work that we see commonalities with other Canadian works. First, its small cast lends to intimacy and immediacy. Like Hot Flashes in 2006 and John Gray’s Billy Bishop Goes to War, which WCT produced in 2011, the play is driven more by plot than by spectacle. While budgetary as well as artistic considerations may play a role in such decisions, a “less is more” approach focuses the audience on the performers rather than the decoration. As well, both 2 Pianos 4Hands and Billy Bishop Goes to War make deft use of the intensity that results when two fine actors take on several roles. The effect can be mesmerizing. What John Gray told me in interview about his approach to music applies to most of the Canadian musical theatre works that have graced WCT’s stages. “The songs,” he said, “are a natural extension of the storytelling, as opposed to a number set up by a scene.” For musical plays that go back to the 1980s, such as Paul Ledoux and David Young’s Fire and Love is Strange and the other above-mentioned WCT productions, this is true. In 2 Pianos 4 Hands, the music, which runs the gamut from classical to pop, is supremely winning. It is also integral to the story of the progression of the friendship of two young boys into adulthood centered around their relationship with the piano, enhancing the combined pathos and hilarity that have made the play stand the test of time. What Paul Ledoux told me in interview about Canadian music in theatre also applies to 2 Pianos 4 Hands: “The Canadian documentary tradition has had an impact on the kind of stories we tell and how we tell them.” That Dykstra and Greenblatt based this play on their own experiences as pianists not only places it in the Canadian musical theatre tradition, but it also gives it that “ring of truth” that adds to the power of its intimate setting, stimulating music, and hilarious, gripping plot with which it is hard not to identify. PRoDucTioN hiSToRy In 1994 Ted and Richard formed Talking Fingers to write and workshop their new script 2 Pianos 4 Hands. The play was subsequently programmed as part of Tarragon Theatre’s 1995-96 season in Toronto, and premiered in April 1996 to rave reviews and sold-out houses. Talking Fingers and Tarragon Theatre shared the 1996 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Production, and Ted and Richard received the prestigious Chalmers Award–Canada’s National Playwriting Award–that same year. Immediately following the close of the premiere run in Toronto, Ted and Richard embarked on a national tour. They travelled from coast to coast with the show, stopping back at the Tarragon for a second run in the fall of 1996, and concluding in Vancouver in September of 1997 at the Vancouver Playhouse. In October of 1997, backed by a team of producers including David and Ed Mirvish, 2 Pianos 4 Hands opened Off Broadway at The Promenade Theatre. The production was widely acclaimed, and ran for six months before transferring to the Kennedy Centre in Washington in the spring of 1998. Ted and Richard returned to Toronto later that summer and again played to sold-out houses, this time at the historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, with Mirvish Productions. The show had its European premiere at the Birmingham Rep in the spring of 1999, a production that transferred later that fall to the Comedy Theatre in the West End of London.

Our cars sing a happier tune. And it’s all because of our environmental leadership – with innovations like a nitrogen-based spraypainting system that uses up to 35% less (water-based) paint and gives a smoother, brighter finish. Improved quality and a cleaner environment. That’s music to anyone’s ears.
