ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Welcome

to the final play of our 2017-18 season, with its theme of Our Stories Live. In Armstrong’s War, Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Colleen Murphy explores a conflict whose effect on our society has been profound, yet largely invisible: our part in the ongoing Afghanistan War. There are few really excellent depictions of stories based on this engagement; we are honoured to present one of the standouts in this work of Ms. Murphy, a celebrated Canadian making her WCT debut. This is also a very personal story about trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet its humanity emerges through its sense of humour and resilience. Though Michael and Halley are tremendously different, we can all see ourselves in their fight. We are also looking forward to our exciting 2018-19 season, designed for fun, families, and exploration. We start the season with a bang in the Pavilion with the world premiere of Kim Harvey’s road comedy, Kamloopa. In October, we will mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War in the Sagebrush Theatre with Vern Thiessen’s searing and romantic play Vimy. For the holiday season, we’ll celebrate with an all-new made-in-Kamloops spectacular, great for the whole family: Elf: the Broadway Musical. We’ll then once again heat up January with the world premiere of a terrific new quirky family comedy called Meet My Sister. Keeping the energy hot, we’ll add some rock and roll zing to your February with Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story. We wrap up the Sagebrush with the hilarious Mom’s the Word: Nest 1/2 Empty. And in May, we close our season with the beautiful and poignant Empire of the Son. We’ll also be presenting local groups in various forms in the Pavilion throughout the year, including cabaret, concerts, comedy, and theatre for young audiences. We look forward to having you join us next season. James MacDonald Artistic Director, Western Canada Theatre

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

This play

contains all of my favourite things about theatre. It has characters with big hearts – the kind that holds both sadness and joy and bathes them in hope. It asks BIG questions – the unanswerable but wrestle-worthy kind, like “What is courage?” and “What would you do if…?”. And, it tells a story. For me this is the real magic of theatre – an opportunity to spend an hour or two inside the life of another person; to experience their hopes and their fears; to understand their challenges and their dreams. Halley and Michael have big hearts, and they ask big questions, of each other and of us. Having the courage to share their personal story allows them to find friendship, understanding, healing, and hope. I’ve always believed that sharing our stories is an integral part of being human and is how we come closer to true understanding – of ourselves, of each other, and of this world we live in. Whether you recognize the stories you witness onstage as being like your own, or you are, for a fleeting moment, living inside someone else’s story for the first time, there is much to be gained that benefits us all. Thank you for being here, in the theatre, holding this space for stories to continue to be told. It matters. With gratitude, Heather Cant Director, Armstrong’s War
