WELCOME The second half of the 20th Century was the most transformative time in human history, with rapid advances in technology, communication, human interaction, and pop culture. Our current world was shaped by these trends, with emergent civil rights and shifts in political ideologies, as well as the styles of music, film, and television that we currently enjoy. BOOM is about the generation before mine, but its references and personas are very familiar. I’ve always been fascinated by patterns of history, and especially the historical forces that have shaped the modern world. Understanding where we’ve been is the only way to really understand where we’re going. As a creator and in his astonishing performance, Rick Miller has the power to immerse us in the era, not as a dry historical recall, but with all of its passion, vibrancy, and transformational change. Through imagery, impersonation, and indelible music, we are taken on a journey of the mind and soul. Many of you will be touched by the memories, and many of you will learn things for the first time by seeing and hearing the past come to life with visceral energy – isn’t that the foundation of great theatre? BOOM has been embraced by hundreds of thousands of people around the world, with over 400 performances. I’ve never known a performer as dynamic as Rick, who captivates the stage with magnetic charm while dazzling us with his virtuous and versatile performance. It’s truly one of the most remarkable, engaging performances you will ever see. Enjoy!

KAYLEE HARWOOD & SUSINN McFARLEN in The Sound of Music (2019), Directed by JAMES MacDONALD Set by HANS SAEFKOW; Costumes by MARIAN TRUSCOTT; Lighting by JOHN WEBBER | Photo by BARBARA ZIMONICK

WRITER’S NOTES

“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” – Aldous Huxley (1959) I’m a storyteller, not a historian. Historical facts only interest me inasmuch as they help tell a story, for stories are how we learn from our mistakes – and from each other. BOOM is a collage of stories that I’ve been documenting about the generation that immediately preceded me: stories of the famous and the not-so-famous; stories of the living and the no-longer-living. Each story in itself might be worthy of a full play, but in this case I’ve chosen to paint them into a larger picture. My hope is that by spiraling through 25 tumultuous years (1945 to 1969), we can all gain perspective not only on who we were, but who we are now and where we’re going. Think of BOOM as a living, breathing time capsule. It starts with a ‘boom’, it ends with a ‘boom’. I hope it stirs up your own stories, so that we can share them together in the lobby after the show. Explosively yours, Rick Miller

PRODUCTION HISTORY

Originally commissioned by the Stratford Festival in 2011, BOOM is produced by Kidoons and WYRD Productions. The show was developed from 2012-14 in a series of workshops at Ex Machina’s La Caserne in Quebec City. A January 2014 work-in-progress run was presented by Theatre Calgary in association with the High Performance Rodeo. Its Canadian premiere was with Mirvish Productions in Toronto in 2015. It has been performed over 400 times in North America, Europe, and Asia. BOOM is the first part in a Trilogy of shows that now includes BOOM X (premiered 2019) and BOOM YZ (premiered 2021), collectively spanning 75 years of history, culture and politics, from 1945-2020.

COME BOOGIE WITH US Boogie the Bridge returns this year on Sunday, April 24, when runners meet in McDonald Park on the North Shore to run or walk various distances. This year marks the first Boogie event since 2019, with in-person Boogies having been cancelled due to the pandemic in the past two years. This beloved annual celebration has raised more than $1 million for charity since its inception more than two decades ago. WCT is proud and honoured to once again partner with Boogie the Bridge as the Charity of Choice for its 25th Anniversary. We share the values of founder Jo Berry, and the Boogie team, promoting camaraderie, sense of community, and good physical and mental health in our city. As a visionary leader in our community, Jo reminds us constantly about how the benefits of RunClub and Boogie are not just about running goals, but about the improvement of our physical, mental, and spiritual health. As the Charity of Choice, funds raised through Boogie are designated to support WCT’s Youth Education Programs, including a new program working with Indigenous youth. Though some of these plans were put on hold by the pandemic, our Stage One Theatre School has been in full activity, inspiring communication, confidence, and collaborative skills in young people, and giving them a sense of play and imagination through a difficult year. Registration is open online at boogiethebridge.com, with varying course options, including one-kilometre kids’ Mini-Boogie, five-kilometre, 10-kilometre, and half-marathon. We encourage our community and our audience to get out and run or walk at Boogie this April – we’ll be there with our WCT team!

ART IN PUBLIC SPACES

AT THE SAGEBRUSH THEATRE

Brought to you by

You may have noticed the Sagebrush Theatre lobby looking more like an art gallery this year. We are thrilled to partner with the Kamloops Arts Council to welcome visual art to the Sagebrush lobby as part of the Art in Public Spaces program. Collaborations like this are so important to us as a way to connect with other arts organizations in our community, and support Kamloops and area artists who operate in realms other than theatre. We are fortunate to have such a vibrant cultural scene in our own backyard, and when we work together it only gets better. Be sure to check out the wonderful array of visual art from local artists before and after the performance. Visit kamloopsarts.ca to learn more about this incredible program and how to purchase available artwork.

WCT GOES “EMERALD” We’ve been up to something new over the past month, and there’s still a chance for you to get in on the fun, help us build our big spring family musical, and pave a yellow brick road to sustainability. There’s also a chance to win some free tickets. Each season, we look forward to our big musical production. It’s a great chance for families to come together and get carried away in some theatrical magic. Often, these shows have a large cast of talented performers surrounded by stunning set pieces and beautiful costumes. The scale is big, and the “wows” are many. We have missed out on this tradition for a couple of years, and it’s so exciting to be coming back this spring with The Wizard of Oz. As we return, we cannot ignore the fact that we are returning to an ever-changing world, where the evidence and impact of environmental shifts cannot be ignored. As an organization with a strong connection to the community and interest in its health and prosperity, we realize that we have a responsibilty to be an element of positive change. One way that we can advance is in the sustainability and environmental impact of the productions that we create. Some call it “going green,” but since we will be in the land of Oz this season, we’re calling it “going emerald.” Here’s what Artistic Director James MacDonald Evan, Morgan, and Jessica check on some of the donations received so far for the has to say about the initiative: “Go Emerald” recycling drive. This is very serious business. “I chose The Wizard of Oz this season because it is the perfect show to gather and celebrate our community. When Set Designer Narda McCarroll and I began working on the design concept for The Wizard of Oz, we were dedicated to finding new, innovative ways to be more sustainable, and looked at how we could repurpose common objects and materials that are available within our community, while maintaining the stunning visuals and high production values that our audiences are used to. The support of our community is the lifeblood of Western Canada Theatre. For over 46 years you have been there for WCT, and this is an entirely new way for you to support WCT, to support sustainability, and to participate in the creative process. In every one of our productions, our community is on our stage. This time it will be literal – your discarded rakes, bicycles, yogurt containers, and umbrellas will be re-used in building an imaginative, creative, magical world, and you won’t even recognize them.” The response has already been great, and we are amassing piles of donations in our collection area at the Pavilion Theatre. Volunteers have been busily sorting, construction is underway, and many of the items have already found their new purpose. Everytime someone brings in a donation they get entered into a weekly draw for tickets to see The Wizard of Oz, and we already have several lucky winners. It’s been a treat to connect and visit when people bring in their donations. As we mentioned, this is a big show, and we need lots of stuff, so there’s still a chance for you to participate. Donations are accepted until March 11th. Find all the details, drop-off times and items needed at wctlive.ca/emerald. Please have a look before coming in. The list is also on the next page. We look forward to catching up with you there and - of course - in May at The Wizard of Oz.
