We’re thrilled to welcome back the profoundly talented Rick Miller for the second year in a row, and to welcome you to another fantastic time in the theatre!

Rick brings us the gifts of an astonishingly talented and versatile performer, and he is also a brilliant writer and storyteller. BOOM X manages that rare double in the theatre: a show that manages to be tremendously entertaining while also engaging our thoughts and our hearts.

As a former student of history, I carry the belief that we need to remember our past in order to understand the present and to plan for the future. And as a member of GenX, I feel that we are the generation that looks ahead and behind with equal measure.

GenX is a sandwich generation, squeezed between the raucous energy of the Baby Boomers and the purposeful world-changing Millennials. We are the philosopher generation, a generation of reflection, looking to correct the mistakes of the past with a wary eye on the future—neither world-beaters nor revolutionaries.

The music, literature, theatre, and art that emerged from the GenX period is deceptively nuanced and transitional. We are not a bossy generation—our art tends to ask the questions, leaving it for other generations to find the answers. Our defining popular music, “grunge”, is poetic, catchy, and edgy. And because our art is reflective of the generations before and after us, BOOM X has an appeal to all generations.

Rick captures the spirit of GenX in tone and story, helping us to both relive and reflect upon the importance of a transitional time, and launching us into where we are now. We’re so thankful to have him back with us.

Enjoy.

NOTES

“I want to hear some small moment from your life that proves you’re really alive.”

– Douglas Coupland, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture (1991)

We all search for meaning, in one way or another. We want our little lives to be part of a bigger picture, which is why some of us are drawn to storytelling—the great connective tissue of the human race. This is the 2nd in a trilogy of shows designed to tell a big-picture story: 75 years of history in this corner of our planet. If BOOM was the story of my parents’ generation, BOOM X is the story of my own generation, dubbed “Generation X”. What that means, and whom it represents, is up for debate. What is not up for debate is that we’re a relatively small demographic, on the thin edge between hordes of “Baby Boomers” and “Millennials”. This precarious position, though, gives GenXers a unique perspective, one that can hopefully keep building bridges and breaking through walls.

BOOM X, at its core, is a search for identity: of a person, a country and a generation. No matter how young you are, or where you come from, I hope you find yourself reflected in one of its many shiny surfaces.

Explosively Yours, RICK MILLER

PRODUCTION HISTORY

BOOM X was commissioned by Theatre Calgary in 2017, and is produced by Kidoons and WYRD Productions, in association with The 20K Collective. It was developed over a series of workshops at Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity and Ex Machina’s La Caserne in Quebec City: March 2017 (Banff writer’s residency), Feb 2018 (Quebec workshop), March 2018 (Banff residency), and Nov 2018 (Quebec workshop). A work-in-progress performance was held on March 24 at the Harvie Theatre in Banff. The world premiere was held at the Theatre Calgary’s Max Bell Theatre on January 18, 2019.

An accomplished director, editor, and visual artist, Nicolas Dostie studied Media Arts and Technology with a focus on television. With the arrival of the digital era in 2002, he became interested in large-scale architectural projection, and helped design the multimedia for the highly visual spectacle Cavalia. His design career then pushed him more and more into the worlds of theatre and circus. He worked for Ex Machina and Robert Lepage, on Le projet Andersen, the Jeux de Cartes series, 887 and Kodō, and with BOOM X. His work as co-designer has garnered several award nominations across Canada. Considered one of the pioneers in architectural projection, Nicolas has worked on the 2014 Sochi Olympics (with Pixmob), and the Cirque du Soleil productions Delirium, the Michael Jackson world tour, and Varekai. He currently teaches at CEGEP La Pocatière, passing on his knowledge to a younger generation.

Recent work includes branding and projections media design for BOOM X and BOOM YZ, for which she was nominated alongside Rick Miller and Nicolas Dostie for the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Projection or Video Design. Irina is the multimedia designer for Jungle Book, Frankenstein, and upcoming projects Andersen Fairy Tales and Rose Red. As a web and video production artist, Irina is the designer and production editor of the Kidoons Network animated series.

Bruno Matte was born in Quebec City and graduated from Cegep Limoilou in 2005 in audiovisual design. A music enthusiast, he began his professional career as a lighting designer for concerts. He began working with local artists, then moved to international acts ranging from Richard Séguin to Charlotte Cardin to Cypress Hill to Daniel Lanois. In an effort to expand his creative research, Bruno began working on several bold theatre productions. Whether with Ex Machina or Kidoons, he found ways to seamlessly integrate lighting with video, under very rigorous technical constraints. His spatial design exploration continued in the world of dance, where he has worked with several La Rotonde choreographers on productions such as Alan Lake and Le fils d’Adrien dance. Bruno regularly designs for the circus, which seems a natural fulfilment of his experience in music, theatre and movement. In productions ranging from Flip Fabrique or Machine de Cirque, the complexity of the work allows him to keep refining his craft. He now works as a production manager.

FLYING SOLO

One-person shows, or solo performances, occur every single day between people as their essence lies in one person telling a story to an audience for the sake of entertainment. These solo performances include all types of art such as comedy acts, novel adaptations, vaudeville, poetry, music, and dance.

The more theatrical version of solo performances arose in the mid-19th century, where audiences would watch one person upon a stage perform for everyone. One-person performances became more than just simple storytelling to a group, but an extravagant event where many others would come to watch or listen to an artist perform their piece.

These shows engage the audience as they are in awe of the performers ability to rely on themselves to remember and recite a show, normally the full length of a play. In BOOM X, you will see the performer, Rick Miller, share his knowledge and storytelling with the audience, performing over 100 different characters all without the assistance of other performers onstage. Rick has made a career of cutting edge solo performances. BOOM X is the second of three shows in a trilogy, which includes BOOM (part of WCT’s 2021/22 season) and BOOM YZ. He also took the world by storm with MacHomer, in which he performed Shakespeare’s MacBeth in the voices of 50 characters from The Simpsons. Of course–as with any stage production–the virtuosity of the performer on stage is enhanced and made possible by teams of designers and crew members behind the scenes. You may remember some other one-person shows at WCT, including Made in Italy, Shirley Valentine, Never Shoot a Stampede Queen, and Letters from Wingfield Farm, to name a few. The final show of WCT’s 2022/23 Season, Every Brilliant Thing, relies less on intricate characterisations and more on creative, long-form storytelling. The actor in this intimate performance will bring you into their world and create a unique relationship with the audience to weave a hilarious but heart-wrenching story that will leave a lasting impression.

ARE

READY TO BOOGIE?

The 2023 Boogie the Bridge will take place on April 23 as runners meet in Riverside Park to run or walk various distances in support of WCT’s Youth Education Programs. The annual event has raised more than $1 million for charity since its inception more than two decades ago.

WCT is proud and honoured to once again partner with Boogie the Bridge as the Charity of Choice for the 26th event. We share the values of founder Jo Berry, and the Boogie team, promoting camaraderie, a sense of community, and good physical and mental health in our city.

Jo is a visionary leader in our city and she reminds us constantly about how the benefits of RunClub and Boogie are not just about running goals, but about the improvement of our physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Funds raised through Boogie are designated to support WCT’s Youth Education Programs, including a new program working with Indigenous youth. With a dedicated home at the new Kelson Hall facility in downtown Kamloops, our Stage One Theatre School will give more young people a unique opportunity to reap the life enhancing benefits from participating in the performing arts.

We encourage our community and our audience to get out and run or walk Boogie in April–we’ll be out with our WCT team! Join us to inspire young people to explore their creativity and share their natural gifts of imagination and expression.

Registration is open online at boogiethebridge.com, with varying course options: one-kilometre, kids’ Mini-Boogie, five-kilometre, 10-kilometre, and half-marathon.
