ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES Working on a show like Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story is a great joy as a director. To spend time in the company of the music of Buddy Holly and his contemporaries is inspiring; to hear it played every day by an amazingly talented group of actor/singer/musicians is a gift. Theatre artists are some of the most dedicated, hard-working professionals you will ever meet – this show is an opportunity to see them at their virtuosic best.
Buddy is the most successful “jukebox musical” of all time, and its success gave rise to a whole new genre of shows paying tribute to classic musical artists, including Million Dollar Quartet. These shows tap into a certain nostalgia, but their real appeal lies in allowing us to identify with the youth and spirit of these gifted musicians. Great theatre tells us a story with which we can identify, and there’s a little Buddy Holly in all of us – optimistic, irrepressible, naïve, ambitious. Buddy Holly rose fast and packed an astonishing amount of achievement in his all-too-short career. He was a visionary and revolutionary in his own quiet way, demonstrated through his songwriting, his innovative production techniques, and his performance style. His popularity crossed generations due to his honest, aw-shucks appeal, but he was also recognized by the music community for his experimental genius and for his prolific output. Buddy was also one of the first artists to truly break down the barriers between genres in rock and roll, accepted in the African-American community as readily as he was in the southern U.S., a feat unheard of at the time. This is largely because he incorporated the influences of African-American music and created his own songs, as opposed to the outright theft practiced by many of his contemporaries. It’s a pleasure for me to continue to be part of a highly successful collaboration between Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, Ontario, and Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops. Though separated by thousands of kilometres across our great country, we are united in creative ambition and wonderful, supportive audiences. Aside from being an opportunity to share resources and talent, it’s a unique collaboration forged out of the desire to bring outstanding Canadian artists together to play on a national stage – to the enjoyment of all of us! Rave on!

BUDDY QUOTE “To guys of my age at the time, if you were the least bit interested in music, Buddy was the one… Elvis was fantastic, but because Buddy had glasses and looked a bit like a bank clerk, you could say to yourself, “Well, it’s not just for guys who look like Elvis.’” - Keith Richards

BUDDY HOL Charles Hardin Holley, better known as Buddy Holly,
was born September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. The Holleys were a musical family, and as a young boy, Holly learned to play the violin, piano and guitar, becoming a gifted instrumentalist. In the fall of 1949 he met Bob Montgomery at Hutchison Jr. High School. They shared a common interest in music and soon teamed up to perform as the duo “Buddy and Bob.” Initially influenced by bluegrass music, they sang harmony duets at local clubs and high school talent shows. Holly’s big break came when they opened for Bill Haley and his Comets at a local rock show. As a result of this performance, Holly was offered a contract with Decca Records to work alone. However, early success as a solo artist eluded him. Holly formed his own band, “The Crickets,” and began making records at Norman Petty’s studios in Clovis, New Mexico. Among the songs they recorded was “That’ll be the Day,” which takes its title from a phrase that John Wayne’s character repeatedly says in the movie The Searchers. Holly’s music was sophisticated for its day, including the use of instruments considered novel for rock and roll, such as the celesta (heard on “Everyday”). Holly was an influential lead and rhythm guitarist, notably on songs such as “Peggy Sue” and “Not Fade Away.” While Holly could pump out boy-loves-girl songs with the best of his contemporaries, in other songs, he featured more sophisticated lyrics and more complex harmonies and melodies than had been previously shown in the genre. Many of his songs feature a unique vocal ‘hiccup’ technique, a clipped ‘uh’ sound used to emphasize certain words in any given song, especially the rockers. For an example, at the start of the raucous number “Rave On”: “We-UH-ell, the little things you say and do, make me want to be with you-UH-ou…” Holly also managed to bridge some of the racial divide that punctuated rock, notably winning over an all-black audience when accidentally booked for New York’s Apollo Theater. After the release of several highly successful songs, in March of 1958 he and the Crickets toured the United Kingdom. In the audience were teenagers John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who later cited Holly as a primary influence BUDDY QUOTE (the band’s name, The Beatles, was chosen partly in homage to Holly’s “John (Lennon) and I started to write Crickets). because of Buddy Holly. It was like,

LLY’S STYLE
Buddy Holly and the Crickets - Redferns
“
Buddy played the music I love, the music I grew up on—countrywestern, rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues—three separate strands of music that he intertwined and infused into one genre, one brand. Buddy wrote songs that had beautiful melodies and imaginative verses. And he sang great. He sang in more than few voices. He was the archetype—everything I wasn’t and wanted to be… He looked older than 22. Something about him seemed permanent, and he filled me with conviction. - Bob Dylan
“
BUDDY QUOTE “Of all the music heroes of the time, Buddy Holly was the most accessible, and he was the real thing… He was one of us” - Eric Clapton

Krystle draws on the eraʼs dynamic and inspirational music that filled the life and home of this trailblazer of the civil rights movement. BUDDY QUOTE “In 16 crowded months, Holly had created a blueprint for enlightened rock stardom that every newcomer with any pretence at self-respect still aspires to follow. He was the first rock ‘n’ roller both talented and strong-minded enough to insist on the artistic control his musical heirs now take for granted. He was the first not only to write his own songs but also to arrange them, directing his backup musicians to his own exacting standards. He was the first to understand and experiment with studio technology, achieving effects with echo, double-tracking and overdubbing on primitive Ampex recorders which have never been bettered.” - Philip Norman, The Telegraph, 2015 27
