WELCOME | BIENVENUDXS

Clean/Espejos is the perfect production to launch our Courage Series at the Pavilion Theatre, especially following on the heels of our recent A Broad’s Way Festival events marking International Women’s Day. This is an original and brave exploration of the experiences of two very different women whose lives parallel in unexpected and intriguing ways. It is also theatrically adventurous and unique in its presentation and in its structure, brought to life by two extraordinary performers and a brilliant creative team. We look forward to continuing to curate productions in our Pavilion Theatre that explore topical and sometimes challenging social issues. We are also excited to bring you theatrical experiences that may involve languages or cultures that are not often seen on our stages, but whose presence is long overdue. Building bridges of understanding between disparate people by cultivating empathy is at the heart of great theatre. We’re so proud and humbled to be able to work with the team at Neworld Theatre. Neworld’s exhilarating, dynamic productions have been enjoyed by audiences across Canada and internationally, and it’s a pleasure to share their work with you. Enjoy! PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES MENSAJE DE LA DRAMATURGA Christine Quintana - Playwright | Dramaturga Translation isn’t simple. It’s interpretation. There’s what a sentence says, what it means, and how it feels. There are many points of departure and moments of transformation. And the truth: the translation will never truly replicate the original. The sentence was something – and now it’s something else. Paula and I, over years of emails and WhatsApp voice memos and GoogleDocs, have worked together to articulate the inner worlds of Adriana and Sarah and bring them to life in two languages. Paula, a consummate translator, is fluent in both. Whereas my intermediate Spanish gives me facility to understand what a sentence says, but not always what it means. It’s an exercise in trust. And then we face the inherent cultural inheritances of language – “I’m sorry,” the hallmark Canadian phrase which tumbles from Sarah’s lips dozens of times in the script, translates to “lo siento” – which as Alexandra pointed out in workshop, translates back to “I feel you. It moves me.” Something, into something else. Every interaction we have with one another is an act of translation. The herculean task of answering the question “how are you?” The subtext we interpret when someone answers “I’m fine.” The act of presenting ourselves to one another, and the ways in which we interpret and understand each other, is an immense act of trust. The trust to be understood, and to understand, knowing there will always be something lost in translation even if we’re speaking the same language, about the same things. What I mean when I say to you, “I’m glad you’re here” and “thank you for coming” is as much your interpretation as my intention. But I trust you. Me conmueve”. I trust you.

A CONVERSATION WITH DIRECTORS |

CHELSEA HABERLIN

Chelsea: So, for these Directors’ notes, we thought we’d talk about why we decided to have two directors. Daniela: Well, an obvious reason is language. The bilingualism already required two people. C: Because you speak Spanish and English and I, alas, only speak English. D: But also the more that we got to know each other, it felt that, conceptually, it would also be a really good idea because this play needs two types of brains. C: There is nothing obvious about how to stage a play like this. It requires a diversity of skill sets. I am more classically trained. Text based work. D: And I was trained almost the opposite that the script is almost the last thing that arrives. That actually images and concepts come first. And that out of those images and concepts, you create the work. It’s a little backwards, but for this play, having those two skill sets work really well because there’s so much of both of those things that just having one brain to have to think about all that would be a lot. So, it turned out that our skills were complementary in being able to put those two things together. Because I find either plays are heavily rooted in text or highly conceptual. This play’s both. Therefore, both of us are needed. C: Well said. I think another part of it is that because of the surtitles and the sort of importance of design in the storytelling to literally understand what’s occurring, design is key. And so to have two sets of eyes watching actors and surtitles and design elements, I think is really helpful in a piece like this. D: As a director, often you’re having to check in with yourself and your own choices, but to be able to whisper next to you and be like, “Is this working? How is this reading for you?” And have a more collaborative process of arriving at decisions is extremely satisfying versus doing it on your own. C: I also wanted to say that we have made a point of not speaking definitively about what we think this play is about, which is one of the reasons to do the Directors’ notes about process and collaboration rather than what this play is about. It’s important to us that everyone have the opportunity to bring what they want to the question: What is this play about? It doesn’t actually really matter what it’s about for me. D: Yeah. In a way we didn’t want to influence your thoughts or perceptions about what this play is supposed to be. But leave it quite open ended because I think, hopefully, we’ve given you enough to draw your own conclusions. And as we’ve shared this piece with others, we’ve found that everybody seems to latch onto different aspects of how this play is speaking to them, which is the power of theater. That’s the whole point. How boring it would be to just take one thing out of a play that’s the same for everyone. C: We hope we’re giving you something to snack on. D: To gnaw on. C: More than snack. To gnaw on. D: Happy gnawing audience.

UNA CONVERSACIÓN CON LAS DIRECTORAS

& DANIELA ATIENCIA

D: Para masticar. C: Más que saborear. Masticar. D: Mastiquen a gusto, público.
