ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES I saw Empire of the Son a few years ago in Vancouver, and was very moved by its honest, gentle theatricality and intimate story of family dynamic. Tetsuro’s writing and performance take us on a cultural and historical journey which may be new and informative to many of us, but his portrayal of the parent/child relationship is something with which we all can identify in some way. We are honoured and proud to share this wonderful story with you. Thanks to all of you for your patience and understanding with our many moves this season due to the situation at the Sagebrush. We look forward to an outstanding season next year back in our old home, full of thrills, laughs, and terrific music. I encourage you to take a look at our season offerings listed in this program and on our website, and to chat with a WCT or KL!BO representative about our fantastic shows and subscription options including a brand new opportunity to subscribe to our Studio Series in the Pavilion. As always, I am also open to your feedback and questions at james@wctlive.ca Finally, huge thanks to the WCT staff and volunteers for the work they’ve done in bringing you our largest season to date in 2018/19. They are unsung heroes in our community. Enjoy Empire of the Son, and we look forward to seeing you in September, 2019 with The Drowning Girls!

PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES When I got the call from James MacDonald showing interest in presenting Tetsuro Shigematsu’s Empire of the Son at Western Canada Theatre, I almost fell off my seat. I had always wanted to share this story with a community that loves storytelling and had always wanted to bring this play to Kamloops. A heartfelt thank you to James and the WCT team who have made this possible, and to you, the audience, who have come out to welcome our company and be a part of our story. Donna Yamamoto

PLAYWRIGHTS’ NOTES When we first started building ‘Empire,’ I rather presumptuously urged the designers to, “make everything tour-able!” I was a bit naïve at the time regarding how things actually worked in Canadian theatre. I wasn’t aware that remounts of Canadian plays are in fact exceedingly rare. So my team gently advised me, “let’s wait for the reviews to come in shall we?” Thanks to their exceptional craftsmanship, Empire of the Son did in fact go on to tour, not once, not twice, but three times. This is more than I could have ever expected. Thank you for being here to help us celebrate such gorgeous luck. And if you’re so inclined, stick around after the show, and we can chat in the lobby. Tetsuro Shigematsu

DIRECTOR’S NOTES It was a great pleasure working with Tetsuro Shigematsu on the creation of Empire of the Son. Being involved in the making of this performance has offered up many nuanced insights into living, dying, laughter and tears – the essence of human self-reflection. I’d like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the project’s many collaborators – such is the beauty of theatre. Finally, I’d like to offer a special thank you to Bahareh, Mika, Taizo, Akira, Yoshiko and the entire Shigematsu family for sharing a story that’s at once so wonderfully singular and reassuringly universal. Richard Wolfe

ABOUT VANCOUVER ASIAN CANADIAN THEATRE

In 2013, Donna Yamamoto was appointed as Artistic Director. Thus began VACT’s rapid transformation from a community theatre to one of the most exciting diversitymandated professional theatre companies in Canada. In 2014, VACT’s co-production with The Frank Theatre of Ga Ting by Chinese Canadian playwright Minh Ly was a world premiere of a new Canadian work. In October 2015, Empire of the Son was presented as part of The Cultch’s 2015/16 season to unanimous critical praise. In the Spring of 2016, VACT premiered Dirty Old Woman’by Chinese Canadian playwright Loretta Seto, as part of The Cultch’s official season, and it enjoyed a sold-out run. Last year Loretta Seto’s play The Ones We Leave Behind was produced by VACT and premiered as part of The Cultch’s 2018/19 season. In the fall of 2016, Empire of the Son’ was remounted at The Cultch, and has been touring nationally to Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, St. John’s, Saint John, Calgary and Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Saskatoon. 7

A stylish, haunting fantasia, The Drowning Girls is full of rich images, quirky humour, and spine-chilling thrills.
