DIRECTOR’S NOTES “A magnificent love poem to his mother”... that perhaps best describes Michel Tremblay’s great autobiographical play – For The Pleasure of Seeing Her Again. Written when he was 55 years of age and already well established among the world’s greatest living playwrights, Tremblay’s homage to his indomitable mother was greeted with rapturous praise. And in the more than a decade since it was first produced in English by Montreal’s Centaur Theatre, translated with enormous sensitivity by Linda Gaboriau, it has received numerous productions all over the world. Audiences and critics alike have been entranced by Tremblay’s “simple women”, his working class mother whose boundless love of family, stories, and theatre transcend time and place. She effortlessly joins the theatrical pantheon of mythic female figures, yet in Tremblay’s loving hands she always remains simply ‘Nana’. Tremblay has always been inspired by the passionate woman he lost at a tragically young age. We see her in the tough, brave and uncompromisingly unsentimental women in Les Belles Soeurs and in the plain spoken Saskatchewan girl in his novel The Fat Woman Next Door is Pregnant. In For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, however, Tremblay strips away the veil of fiction and presents us with his personal memories of his mother, told directly to us by his autobiographical ‘Narrator’. She dances in front of us, as vibrant in memory as she must have been dominating the Tremblay family kitchen in 1950’s Montreal. It is a privilege to bring this uniquely personal piece of theatre to you...particularly as it means creating a production with two of Canada’s most talented actors – Margo Kane and Lorne Cardinal. Inspired by the plays’ reference to Nana’s Cree background, our production is the first to bring the play to life from this particular perspective. He is probably the most-produced playwright in the nation and arguably the most important playwright in the history of the country. His first widely produced play, Les Belles-soeurs (The Sisters In-Law), opened the floodgates of theatre, both francophone and anglophone. It introduced a theatre that could not be mistaken as anything but Canadian. His plays have been adapted and translated

into over 22 languages (including Yiddish, Haitian Creole, Dutch, Lithuanian, Hindi and Japanese) and have seen huge success in Europe, the Americas and the MiddleEast. He has also written fourteen novels and three books of autobiographical sketches. Tremblay has received many top honours and honorary doctorates, including a Governor General's Award (1999). More recently, in 2000, For The Pleasure of Seeing Her Again won a Chalmers Award and a Dora Mavor Moore Award. Michel Tremblay divides his time between homes in Montreal and Key West. Linda Gaboriau Translator At WCT: The Orphan Muses (1995) Other Translations: Linda Gaboriau is renowned for her translations of some 100 plays and novels. Her translations of plays by Quebec's most prominent playwrights have been published and produced across Canada and abroad. Et Cetera: A native of Boston, Gaboriau moved to Montreal in 1963 to pursue education in French language and literature at McGill University. She worked as a freelance journalist for CBC and the Montreal Gazette, pursued a career in Canadian and Quebec theatre and, since the 2000s, has been serving as the founding director of the Banff International Literary Translation Centre. Gaboriau was married to Montreal city councillor Nick Auf der Maur, who died in 1998, and is the mother of rock musician Melissa Auf der Maur. She lives in Montreal with Hervé de Fontenay, her partner of 28 years. They have one son, Yves de Fontenay, who is a young architect.

FROM LES BELLE-SOEURS TO FOR THE PLEASURE OF SEEING HER AGAIN

Kamloopsians’ exposure to local productions of Michel Tremblay’s work has been small. However, we are about to have it doubled with Western Canada Theatre’s production of For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, and the two works that have been produced locally couldn’t be more reflective of the playwright’s prolific career. My research suggests that the TRU Actors Workshop production of Les Belles-Soeurs in 2007 was our first local experience of the writer Gaetan Charlebois pronounced in the Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia “arguably the most important playwright in the history of the country.” A look at these two important plays reveals the reflexive paths writers’ careers can sometimes take. Born in 1942 in working- class Montreal to a father who was a printer and a mother whom, through the magic of theatre, you are about to meet (although she died before he received recognition in 1964 for his first play, Le train, in a Radio-Canada competition), Tremblay shocked Montreal in 1968 and forever changed Quebec theatre with Les Belles-Soeurs. Celebrating working class women, employing the joual that was actually spoken in Quebec, and questioning religion and other controlling forces in the province, it is seen as a hallmark of Quebec’s nationalist movement. Although it wasn’t until 1973 that the play had its English-language premiere (in Toronto), its impact on English-speaking theatre was almost as significant. Subsequently, Tremblay’s work, translated into over twenty-five languages, would be seen on stages the world over. Tremblay would receive a host of provincial and national awards, including the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, as well as the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France in 1994; become the most popular contemporary playwright in Scotland; and create an enormous body of work, including novels and film scripts. If Les Belles- Soeurs signaled his theatrical fame, For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again marked another seminal stage in Tremblay’s career. Premiering in French in Montreal in 1998, the play, which had its first English-language production (also in Montreal) in a record-breaking two months, was both a departure and a return. Most of his earlier works could be classified as semi-autobiographical: they have domestic surfaces – working-class Montreal settings, characters composites of people with whom he grew up – with powerful political, social, and sexual subtexts. Encore un fois, si vous permettez was Tremblay’s first memoir: he stepped further into his own life experiences by re-imagining his relationship with his mother, specifically her instrumental role in shaping him as a writer. For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again has its genesis in Tremblay’s beginnings in another way: it was created to mark the thirtieth anniversary of Les Belles-Soeurs. My title above refers to the relationship between these two plays, but it also acknowledges something specific to the Western Canada Theatre production of For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again. Margo Kane, who plays Nana, established a theatre company called Full Circle First Nation Performance in 1992; Tremblay’s Cree grandmother passed on her love of story to her daughter, who, in turn, passed it on to her son.
