DIRECTOR’S NOTES The theme of our current season at WCT is Our Stories Live. These stories are presented in a diversity of styles and genres, from comedy to musical to drama, but each one has a particular story to tell about who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. From the hijinks of The Birds and the Bees, to the inspiration of GLORY, to the poignancy of Children of God, to the moving and funny Armstrong’s War, this spring at WCT is full of opportunities for us to both celebrate and reflect on who we are as a country, and as people. With GLORY, we’re especially thrilled to tell the story of these incredible women from the 1930s who represent the millions of women of their generation who paved the way for the future through their perseverance, ambition, and sense of play. Too often we consider these stories as dusty pages in an old book—seeing them come to life on the stage not only pays tribute to their success, it allows us to identify with their joys, their struggles, and their determination. In developing the show we have been incredibly inspired by this Canadian story—we hope you will feel the same. And there’s nothing more exciting for us than to be able to present a world premiere – you are the first audiences to lay eyes on a show that will be produced for years to come, carrying the name of Kamloops along with it. Your support for the variety of stories we tell at WCT is what makes us stronger as a community. We thank you for your support, and we hope you enjoy the show. Go Rivulettes! James MacDonald Director, GLORY Artistic Director, Western Canada Theatre

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES I’ve always thought the worlds of team sports and theatre were very similar: The camaraderie, the support, and the united goal that is reached by working together as a fierce ensemble of players. The Rivulettes were pioneers in the world of hockey. They fought to play a game they loved, a fight that continues to this day. This play is inspired by their story. It could never be their story, as I never met them and there are only so many facts you can build into a play before it becomes a documentary. What I’ve created for you, with the help of so many others, is a story that will let you experience a time, a country, a game, and the lives of five simple, yet extraordinary, human beings who left a huge legacy. They have all inspired me with their courage, their determination, and their honesty. I hope this play inspires you. We must continue to fight for glory in desperate times, against adversity and prejudice and racism. I am so grateful to be a part of this fierce ensemble of players, led by our own fearless coach, and to share this story with you.

TRACEY POWER’S GLORY: RESONANCE AND SWING Tracey Power’s GLORY reconstructs the personal and professional lives of a quartet of talented and determined women and their male coach who take their Ontario hockey team, The Preston Rivulettes, to national fame during a six-year period in the Depression of the 1930’s. The play runs the gamut of meanings inherent in the title: the Rivulettes earn praise and renown, give thanks, are in their glory when they are on the ice, and enhance hockey’s fame. GLORY – “a play that swings” – also resonates on multiple levels, from music and choreography through thematic concerns. Swing dancing emulates the fast-paced movement of hockey. The historically accurate choreography sets the tempo of the abundant on-ice action. But Power’s merging of swing and hockey also reminds us that the art of theatre and the sport of hockey have much in common, beyond movement: for instance, each performance is unique and ephemeral, requires talent and stamina in return for relatively brief moments of glory, and is dependent on an audience to be completed. It is not surprising, then, that the players “come out swinging” on ice. The Preston Rivulettes’ brand of hockey is very physical out of necessity: they need to play extra hard to prove themselves. They literally fight to draw the large crowds and sponsorship necessary to stay in the game. Metaphorically, the four female characters have to “come out swinging” off-ice, too. They must contend with sexism and stereotyping of 1930’s society. Perceptions that the only women who play hockey are lesbians and marriage and parenting must put an end to women’s careers are barriers they confront. Not only are they fighting to continue their own careers; they are also struggling to secure the role of women’s hockey for future generations. Electro-swing, the music that infuses the play, is an effective choice, not only for its vibrancy but also because unites time periods. The lively cadenced swing and jazz music popular in the 1930’s both embeds the play in its setting and sets a tempo appropriate to the rhythm of hockey. When modern, often computer-generated, forms are overlaid on swing, the resulting hybrid bridges past and present. In fact, Power’s depiction of Canada in the 1930’s may swing audiences’ minds to current events. Canada’s severely restricted immigration policy and the anti-Semitism that sparked Toronto’s Christie Pits riots provide historical context in GLORY. Precarious employment and insecure funding for women’s sports necessitate that the team toil tirelessly to fund their way to the championships. The threat of a world war takes its toll on the personal and professional lives of the team members. While the details may be different, these issues are likely to resonate with Canadians in 2018. In the end, GLORY briefly but cleverly swings directly to the 21st Century to remind us that, through the sustained efforts of collectives like the Preston Rivulettes, improvements in sports for women and in Canadian society in general have occurred. Tracey Power’s “play that swings” is sharp, compelling, relevant, and inspiring – as good theatre (and hockey) should be. Ginny Ratsoy Associate Professor of English Thompson Rivers University

SUPPORT WCT • MAKE AN IMPACT

While you know Western Canada Theatre is one of the premier arts organizations in BC, do you know that it is also a registered charity? Box office sales account for only 25% of the income. WCT relies on its generous supporters to meet its ambitions while keeping live theatre accessible. Your support helps bring the vision of exciting writers, actors, directors and designers to life and inspire the audiences of today and future generations.
