WELCOME

Music plays such an evocative role in stirring our minds, our hearts, and our senses. Sometimes it’s a distinct conjuring of a specific place or event, that is either personally familiar or calls up a distant past. Sometimes it’s a feeling that stirs our emotions, or a less-specific feeling that hits us deep in our souls. Hey Viola! is the story of a person, of an era, and of a struggle to overcome injustice as well as the incomprehensible and inhuman dismissal of AfricanCanadian (and African-American) identity and equality. Viola’s journey through the 20th century was reflected in the music of its time and creators—angry, joyous, resilient, and determined. That our world ever treated (or continues to treat) anyone as a second-class citizen based on the colour of their skin is an eternal injustice that we can never truly erase, especially if we do not acknowledge and learn from the past. We share Viola’s story not just because she was so remarkable in her life and her achievements, but also because she was so normal—a bright, ambitious, happy woman whose simple desire to be treated equally in a commonplace, ordinary moment changed her life irrevocably. Her sacrifice, like those of tens of thousands of others, has made ours a better world. Yet there are still so many steps to take towards eradicating the scourge of injustice and racism—perhaps this will help us all take a few steps forward.

James MacDonald, Artistic Director

CREATORS’ NOTES When we set out on our journey to “get to know”, Viola Irene Desmond, not only did we discover the intelligence, the strength, and the courage of this incredible woman, we also found similar attributes in the music written KRYSTLE DOS SANTOS, during her lifetime. We were lucky to get to know her Creator & Performer through scholars and historians, but most valuably through the words and memories of her sister, Wanda Robson, whose book Sister to Courage, is a beautiful tribute to Viola and her family. Without Wanda, Hey Viola! would be missing something very personal. We feel so honoured to be able to help share Viola’s story, which is still far too relevant in today’s world. She’s an inspiration on so many levels. As Canadians, we have to recognize that this is not a unique story in our history, but one that reflects an imperfect culture, past and present, and is one of many examples of how we can always strive TRACEY POWER, to be better. We hope to share Viola’s story across the Creator & Director country, giving more Canadians a chance to get to know this incredible human being. This run is part of a tour that includes New Westminster, West Vancouver, Edmonton, Gananoque, Hudson, and Charlottetown. It is the not knowing that fueled the passion to create this show, and why it now exists. Thank you to James MacDonald and Western Canada Theatre for their new play development and premiere production support, Jessica Schneider and the Anvil Centre who, along with Musical TheatreWorks and WCT, against all odds premiered this show in the fall of 2020. And to all those who have been champions along the way. Huge thanks to our team of profound artistic souls: Sereana Malani, Angela Beaulieu, Steve Charles, Mary Ancheta, Chris Davis, Jen Lewin, Jillian White, CS Fergusson, Drew Facey, and Maddy Henry. Enjoy!
