ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome
to our 2018-19 season!
We are proud to launch our season with Kamloopa, written and directed by a brilliant emerging creator, Kim Senklip Harvey. Ms. Harvey has provided us with a transformative experience, for the characters on the stage, the audience, and for our company. This is a process and a production like few others, with Indigenous women at the forefront of a creative team, telling a story that celebrates the power of Indigenous Matriarchy and gives voice to their experiences. As an organization, we are pleased to play a part in giving space to these formidable artists and creators. We wish to acknowledge that we are on land located in the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory within the unceded traditional lands of the Secwépemc Nation. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create, and perform on this beautiful territory and would also like to thank the Tk’emlups Indian Band for their support in creating this production. We are also pleased to collaborate with Persephone Theatre, the Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre, The Cultch in Vancouver, and the National Arts Centre Indigenous Theatre in Ottawa, ensuring that Kamloopa will enjoy a long life on many stages after its premiere here in Kamloops. Kamloopa continues to define the Pavilion space as a forum for alternative theatre projects within our established season. We look forward to continuing to program the space with edgier, more experimental content, as well as providing a venue for more intimate productions such as Made in Italy and Empire of the Son. In March of 2019 we will present our first annual spring festival of creation, featuring cabarets, guest speakers, and public performances of new plays in progress—details to be announced soon! And from the Sagebrush Theatre stage, we will continue to offer the best in comedy, musicals, and dramas to excite all audiences. There’s something for everyone in our 201819 season, because that’s who we are: Theatre that embraces our audiences with highquality productions that cross the theatrical spectrum, to entertain, educate and enrich our whole community. Up next we have Vimy, a story of courage, romance and sacrifice to honour the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I. And then we have something for the whole family: ELF the Musical, the modern Christmas classic! We thank you for your support of Western Canada Theatre over the past 43 years, and for attending this production. Enjoy.

FIRE CREATOR’S NOTES I am here because of the work of many Indigenous women. Women who have and continue to powerfully create and hold space for Indigenous voices to be heard. I am eternally grateful for their work and labour. I would like to take this opportunity to presence some of the women who I’ve had the fortune of learning from: Margo Kane Marie Clements Cathy Elliot Lori Marchand Lisa C. Ravensbergen Quelemia Sparrow Lindsay Lachance The artistic ceremony of Kamloopa is a reclamation of sovereignty over colonial systemic oppression. This is about bearing witness to the power of Indigenous women, a dignity too often denied. Kamloopa is a manifestation of my love and respect for the entire scope of our lives. With deep love, from my Ancestors to yours, welcome to the Long Lodge. Limelet, Sechanalyagh. KIM SENKLIP HARVEY Fire Creator

ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES
CRIS DERKSEN
CRIS DERKSEN Fire Igniter & Tender – Sound Designer/Composer At WCT: Debut Elsewhere: In a world where almost everything — people, music, cultures — get labelled and slotted into simple categories, Cris Derksen represents a challenge. Originally from Northern Alberta, she comes from a line of chiefs from NorthTall Cree Reserve on her father’s side and a line of strong Mennonite homesteaders on her mother’s. The Juno-nominated, classically trained cellist and composer braids the traditional and contemporary, weaving her classical background and her Indigenous ancestry together with new school electronics to create genre-defying music. Recent compositions include 2018 Banff Centre for the Arts String Quartet Residency, DORA Award for Best Sound Design 2018; Kiinalik: these sharp tools, Ka:hawai Dance Company 2018 production of Blood Tides. As a performer, Derksen has performed nationally and internationally, both solo and with some of Canada’s Finest, including Tanya Tagaq, Buffy Sainte Marie, and Naomi Klein, to name a few. THE SEVEN GRANDMOTHER TEACHINGS Hello! I’m fire igniter and tender Lindsay Lachance. I offered The Seven Grandmother Teachings as the dramaturgical framework for Kamloopa. Although versions of the teachings vary, one interpretation is that the Seven Teachings were given to Anishinaabeg to help guide us towards living a good life. In embodying and practicing the seven values of Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Truth and Humility, we live our best selves and can support those around us. As a dramaturg, I honour and presence the teachings in reimagining a women-centric approach that naturally became The Seven Grandmother Teachings. The Seven Grandmother Teachings act as the composition for script development, tools for actor training methodology and support rehearsal phases. The Teachings are pressenced throughout the process, in various situations, including asking character development questions, like “When does my character lack Humility?” “Where is my character showing respect?” We also use the teachings as a model for how to treat our collaborators, and to honour the various skills, knowledges and strengths that each individual brings to the process. The Seven Grandmother Teachings as a framework is emotional, personal, powerful, rigorous and always shifting. We are not offering a fixed model that must be applied in rigid ways, but are sharing how we developed a way of working rooted in the knowledges carried by the Indigenous women involved in building Kamloopa. Miigwetch for witnessing a part of our process. Lindsay Lachance Fire Igniter and Tender – Dramaturg
