WELCOME I was at a dinner party a few years ago (remember those?) when a friend told me about how much he and his wife were enjoying the TV series Kim’s Convenience. I asked if he’d ever seen the play, and he responded “Kim’s Convenience was a play?” I decided to program it on the spot. Kim’s Convenience is a play with big heart and humour, as befits its origins. Ins Choi was working as an actor when he wrote the story based on his personal experiences working in a friend’s store (“convenience” stores are ubiquitous in Toronto, where Ins grew up), and he has described the play as a “love letter” to all first-generation immigrants. The play itself is a success story not unlike the immigrant experience – its first production was small, with very few resources, and through hard work and commitment it has become one of the most successful Canadian plays of all time. Like all great comedies, Kim’s Convenience tells a story that is grounded in a humorous approach to serious issues. The playwright successfully navigates cultural and family tensions while creating characters with whom we can all identify, no matter our backgrounds or experiences. That it is such a personal story for the playwright is evident in the dead-on accuracy of these characters, brought wonderfully to life in this production by a talented cast. Kim’s Convenience is one of the previously scheduled plays that we decided to bring back after our cancelled live theatre season last year, and it’s a perfect place for all of us to be – out of our living rooms and away from our TVs, sharing a laugh over this warm, lively comedy in the company of friends. Enjoy!. Enjoy!

Thank you for being here. It’s a bigger decision now to be here. Unless this note is also published online, you’re only reading this cuz you’re in a theatre safely gathered as a group to hear a story. In this case, it’s a story about an Asian-Canadian family. I had a conversation with a friend a while ago about how to combat the rise of Asian hate crimes. We concluded that in tandem with reactively condemning such abhorent behaviours, the proactive part was continuing to write stories and mentor younger Asian-Canadian storytellers. Through stories we see into the lives of others wholly different from ourselves and realize how similar we all are. Through stories we are entertained as a group and comforted to know we’re not alone, both in our struggles and what we find funny. Through stories, chasms can be bridged, truths can be heard and reconciliation is possible, strengthening our country for the next generation to surpass our dreams and efforts. Thank you for being here to hear this story.
INS CHOI, Playwright
WRITER’S NOTES
I’m deeply grateful to Ashlie Corcoran and the Arts Club for their leadership, for all the tenacious administration required in bringing this play to the stage during these times. And to Kaitlin Williams, Soran Nakai, the stage management team, the designers, and the cast, thank you for providing this essential sevice. With much love and joy, Ins

WCT PRESENTS... Most shows we bring you at Western Canada Theatre are WCT Productions, which means they were built and rehearsed right here at WCT. We secure the rights to a play, hire artists, arrange for travel, and purchase materials, all through our offices at the Pavilion Theatre. Whether it is an existing play (The Sound of Music, Elf: The Musical), or a world premiere (GLORY, the upcoming Echoes of the Homesick Heart), these productions are unique and exclusive to Kamloops. It is possible that the production is such a success that it may go on tour, or another company will decide to “pick up” the production. Rather than starting from scratch, they will use some of the existing cast members, design elements, and direction from our production. We also feature Co-Productions, where we pool resources with other companies to create a production—with rehearsal, construction, casting, performances, and other elements taking place in both Kamloops and partner cities. These co-productions are great way to share resources and give artists a chance to work with companies across the country (The world premiere of Serving Elizabeth, with Thousand Islands Playouse in Gananoque, ON). These differ from tours because they usually only involve two or three companies. In the case of this production of Kim’s Convenience, you have a WCT Presentation (similar to Trace and BOOM). In this situation, another company has produced, built, and rehearsed a show that is ready for touring, and we’re able to host that production on our stages. Productions like these have been specifically chosen because they fit in with the artistic vision for our season. There are many different companies and promoters that use the Sagebrush and Pavilion Theatres to present touring shows and productions, but unless they are clearly marketed as part of our season, they are not WCT presentations. Kim’s Convenience originated as a small Fringe festival show, and grew to the point where it was produced by Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto, toured Canada, and eventually ended up being adapted into a hit television show that ran for five seasons on CBC and Netflix. In 2018, Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre mounted a new production. It was a huge hit and won rave reviews. In 2020, the Arts Club, also in Vancouver, decided to pick up that production and adapt it for larger stages and touring. The show began it’s Lower Mainland tour, which ended up being cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Just this month, the production was revived and is coming to us off a successful run at the Arts Club’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. We are so happy to finally be hosting this team, and we know you’ll absolutely love it. The Arts Club, the largest not-for-profit urban theatre company in Canada, is the principal gathering place for the theatrical arts in British Columbia. Comprising three unique venues across Vancouver, the Arts Club welcomes more than a quarter million guests annually, tours provincially and nationally, and engages students and artists alike through educational and professional programs. Above all, the Arts Club is dedicated to the advancement of local artists telling stories from around the globe and, in particular, those of our region. From this, we believe that culture expands, an understanding of differences is nurtured, and art bursts forth. Pacific Theatre creates art that rigorously explores the spiritual aspects of the human experience from our unique, and intimate alley theatre space. With a focus on developing new work, producing challenging and moving stories for adults, and nurturing emerging artists, we use theatre to examine the big questions that tear us apart and tie us together. Now in our 39th season, we cherish our ‘small but mighty’ reputation, striving always to expand our welcome to artists and audiences alike.
Welcome back to the store! We are so glad you are here.

DIRECTORS’ NOTE
This production marks our third opportunity to direct Kim’s Convenience, and our love for this story grows stronger every time. We are grateful to the Arts Club for giving us the chance to return to it after our tour in 2020 was shut down unceremoniously by COVID-19.
Throughout our time working on Kim’s Convenience, we have been struck by its message of grace, reconciliation, and redemption across different generations of a Korean-Canadian family. Kim’s Convenience is a story of a family struggling with the pain of the past and how to move forward. The tension of obligations in conflict with one’s dreams, the prodigal child who seeks reconciliation, the uncertainty of how it SORAN NAKAI, Assistant Director will all turn out. The story of this family is small, but the themes and struggles are universal, as is their hope. No matter what brokenness in which we may find ourselves, love is a force that calls forth restoration. This production began around the corner from the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage at Pacific Theatre’s much smaller alley stage in 2018. We have endeavoured to preserve our original production’s heart, intimacy, and truthful performances while continuing to dig deeper into Appa’s story and what it means for all Canadians today. Many people have seen Kim’s Convenience and remarked, “That is my story—that’s my dad—that’s my family.” If this is also your experience, we hope we have Proudly presents honoured your story. We hope you laugh and delight in seeing a piece of your history on Enneamuse: stage. Together, we hope you feel at home Suffering and Wholeness and maybe even return—okseeyou! Kaitlin and Soran
