A note from the Director Every once in a while I read a script and just know right away that WCT should produce it. Made in Italy is one of those scripts. It’s a story I think will resonate
with everyone – Salvatore’s struggle to make the right choices for his family,
Francesco’s quest to find where he truly belongs – these questions of identity,
family and belonging are ones we all face. And while this is a story inspired by
Farren’s own family, I have no doubt we will all see elements of ourselves (and
our own families) in this show. Plus, this production is such a fabulous showcase for Farren – not only does he get to play countless different characters, but he
also gets to sing some fantastic songs and show off his disco skills!
I’m very proud that we are producing the world premiere of this fantastic new script here at WCT.
Later this season, this production will travel to Edmonton to play at the Citadel Theatre, one of
Canada’s largest regional theatres. Edmonton is home to a number of the artists involved in this
production – Farren, our choreographer, Laura Krewski, and our set designer, Cory Sincennes –
and soon to be, me! This fall, Holly and I, and our two sons, are moving to Edmonton, where I will become the new Artistic Director of the Citadel. We are excited about the opportunities ahead but will certainly miss the great people of Kamloops. I can’t thank you enough for all the support you have shown me and Western Canada Theatre over the past 6 years – it has meant the world to me. But you’re not rid of me quite so easily! I’ll be back later this season to direct both Comedy
of Errors and The Cure for Death by Lightning – I look forward to seeing you then.
And speaking of great artists from Edmonton, a huge welcome to Western Canada Theatre’s
new Artistic Director, James Macdonald! James is a great director and a great guy and will be a fantastic fit here at WCT. I have no doubt you’re going to love him, and I look forward to seeing the fantastic things he does here at WCT! Sincerely,
Daryl

A note from the PLAYWRIGHT My Italian grandparents had two dining rooms in their home. One was in the
kitchen, right next to the stove. It existed simply for low-key, everyday eating. The other bigger one was reserved for much larger meals. The kind that
brought the entire family together. The sort that attracted local priests, nuns,
and neighbours to the Timoteo household. This dining room showcased a long, beautiful wooden table over a rich gold carpet against the backdrop of a fine wooden cabinet with pricey china inside. This was the most treasured place
in their home, and my grandmother had one very strict rule about that room:
I was never, under any circumstances, allowed to enter it, unless she was hosting a dinner party. I diligently obeyed this rule. I thoroughly understood its sacred meaning. And, as a result of its
forbidden quality, those moments when the embargo lifted and we entered into it for an evening of amazing food and raucous merriment remain as some of the most cherished memories of my life. The Italian culture recognizes that there is great joy to be had in coming together and sharing.
Sharing food, sharing customs, sharing wisdom, and sharing stories. I learned as a young person where I fit into that tradition of sharing. I’m a storyteller. I recall performing a stand-up comedy act
in high school exclusively about my Italian family, garnering nicknames like “The Italian” with some of my friends, fooling me into thinking I’d taken ownership of my culture. But, it wasn’t until I was
an adult that I really started to learn about where I’d come from. Hearing my grandfather’s stories
of Italy before he immigrated, my father’s stories of growing up with a culture that Canadians didn’t understand and, finally, experiencing my family’s country of origin for myself. This play is inspired
by them; though not a biographical account of their stories, it attempts to celebrate the spirit of their
journey by embracing what my culture values most… sharing it. To do this correctly, you understand, we’ll have to go to the most sacred of places. The dining room. The big one. Farren Timoteo
