DIRECTOR’S NOTES Mamma Mia! is a show I have wanted to direct for 17 years. I first saw it in 1999 in London. It was, of course, sold out, but I went up to the box office and asked if maybe they might have a cancellation...and they told me that the person in the line before me had just returned two tickets. I grabbed the tickets, phoned my wife, and an hour later we were sitting in the stalls. I was rapt from the beginning! I smiled, I laughed...and by the end of the show I knew it was one I simply had to do. It’s a charming story. And it is supported and enhanced by a superb musical score. I never really thought I knew ABBA music. But during the course of the show I said “I know that number....Good Lord I know that number.....Oh my gosh I know every one of these songs!” I met with the producers and begged for the rights. They told me it would be 15 years minimum before they were going to be available. And now, almost 17 years to the day after I saw that show, I’ve got the great pleasure of doing it, and doing it at one of my favourite theatres in Canada: WCT. And from here we take it to my home company, Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton. It’s a high-energy extravaganza. It’s a charming and quite often touching love story. It should make us laugh; it should make us cry; it should make us cheer. And because of this cast, this crew, and this entire production team, it should be one of the most exciting shows we’ve all seen in a long, long time! ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHTS Benny Andersson Born in 1946 in Stockholm. • 1952: Received accordion lessons from his father and grandfather. • 1964-68: Member of the Hep Stars, Sweden’s most popular rock band in the 1960’s. During this time, he began composing music. • 1972-82: ABBA. • 1982-84: Composed the music (together with Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice) for the musical Chess. • 1987: Began collaborating with Orsa Spelmän. Recorded three albums deeply rooted in Swedish folk music: Klinga Mina Klockor, November 1989 and Fiolen Min. In 2001, this collaboration led to the formation of Benny Andersson’s Orchestra, a 16-man constellation with vocalists, Helen Sjöholm and Tommy Körberg. Thus far, this has resulted in five CD albums and several summer tours. • 1990-95: Composed the music to Kristina from Duvemåla. Premiered in October 1995. • 1995: Received the title of professor from the Swedish government. Inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 2007. Appointed Honorary Doctor of the College of Humanities at Stockholm University in 2008, and at Luleå University of Technology in 2012. • Benny Andersson is married to former TV producer, Mona Nörklit. They have one child. Benny Andersson also has two children from a previous marriage and five grandchildren. Björn Ulvaeus Björn Ulvaeus was born in Gothenburg in 1945. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skiffle. By the early Sixties he was a member of a folk group, which was discovered by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson. The band, as the Hootenanny Singers, quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups. In 1966, Björn met Benny Andersson. In 1970 the pair started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show, together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. In 1971, Björn and Agnetha were married. From 1972 and a decade onwards, Björn was occupied by his work with ABBA. In 1983, Björn and Benny started writing Chess with lyricist Tim Rice, which was released as a concept album in 1984 and opened as a

musical in London’s West End in 1987 and on Broadway in 1988. For Björn and Benny’s next musical, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish and chose the Emigrants novel series by Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work, the musical Kristina från Duvemåla, which opened in 1995. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra and has involved himself in the stagings of Mamma Mia!, as well as the 2008 movie version. Stig Anderson Born in 1931, Stig Anderson achieved fame as ABBA’s manager. Originally a primary school teacher, he also performed with the wonderfully named Stig Anderson And His Mashed Creampuffs in a brief attempt at pop stardom. His real talent lay in songwriting, however, and he made his name with comic hits. He formed Polar Music with studio engineer Bengt Bernhag and achieved early success with the Hootenanny Singers, featuring Björn Ulvaeus. When Ulvaeus subsequently befriended Benny Andersson, it was Anderson who persuaded them to write together. Determined that ABBA should win the Eurovision Song Contest, Anderson suggested the title ‘Waterloo’ for one of their songs. The group duly won the 1974 contest and went on to become a bigger and bigger phenomenon, with Anderson retaining a tight control on what would eventually be Sweden’s second most profitable company (after car manufacturer Volvo). He also continued to provide lyrics for the Andersson/ Ulvaeus songwriting partnership. By the early 80s, however, Anderson’s attempts to reduce the group’s tax burden had led to some questionable business ventures and prompted a tax investigation that almost put Andersson, Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog in jail. In 1989, Anderson sold Polar Music and also set up the Polar Music prize through the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, awarded to one pop and one classical musician every year. One of his final collaborations before his death in 1997 was on ABBA: The Name Of The Game, an entertaining look behind the scenes of the ABBA phenomenon. 5

Michelle Bardach Ensemble At WCT: Julia in Children of God Elsewhere: Some of her favourite credits include Éponine in Les Misérables (Chemainus); Hope Cladwell in Urinetown (Firehall Art Centre); Jeanie in Hair (Renegade); and Kate McGowan in Titanic (Theatre Under the Stars). In 2012, she won the Ovation Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress and the Aida Broadbent Award. In the same year, Michelle was a co-producer for the full-scale musical Darling. Other: Michelle is humbled to be returning to Kamloops this year after performing as Julia in WCT’s workshop of Children of God last year. She is a graduate of the Musical Theatre Program at Capilano University, and since graduating, she has been performing in musical theatre as well as teaching. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario music education program, he currently heads the music department at Sa-hali Secondary School in Kamloops. As well as working for 5 summers as a cruise ship showband musician for Holland America, Celebrity and Cunard, he has also worked with such musicians as Jack Lavin (Powder Blues), Doug Riley (Dr. Music, Anne Murray, Bob Seger), producer Jack Richardson (The Guess Who, Bob Seger, Alice Cooper), The Rankins and Gary Guthman. Katie Kerr Sophie Sheridan At WCT: Debut. Elsewhere: Katie Kerr is a graduate of the Musical Theatre Performance program at Sheridan College, where she played the role of Wendla in Spring Awakening and originated characters in Come From Away and The Theory of Relativity, two new Canadian music theatre works. Katie has spent the last six years in Prince Edward Island as a company member of the Charlottetown Festival. She has played various roles, including Sophie in Mamma Mia!, Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables, and was part of the of the world premiere of Evangeline. Other: She is now living in Charlottetown and currently teaching drama at Holland College. Katie also plays the ukulele and is an avid singer/songwriter. A Love Letter to ABBA and MAMMA MIA! Full disclosure – the first album I ever owned was ABBA’s Greatest Hits Volume 2 – the following is a love letter. According to mammamia.com, over 60 million people have seen Mamma Mia! onstage, and as of the time of this publication, the smash jukebox “ultimate feel-good” musical is currently playing in London, Japan, Korea and on the Royal Caribbean cruise line. The show is touring in the UK, Spain and North America, and there’s an international tour set to re-commence in 2018. And now… KAMLOOPS has its very own production, built, rehearsed, and presented here! What a concept! Combine beloved ‘70’s music with a tropical storyline full of love and intrigue. What a soundtrack! ABBA was a Swedish band that reportedly learned their English translations phonetically and had huge global hits with such songs as “Dancing Queen” and “Waterloo”. Comprised of Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, theatricality was always part of their act. Remember those colourful costumes? Thank the Swedish government. You couldn’t write off your costumes as a performing artist unless you couldn’t use them every day. So flamboyancy reigned. Hallelujah. Through their most successful years, Frida and Benny were married, as were Agnetha and Björn. As their marriages dissolved, the music became more dark and they disbanded in 1982. The women went on to limited solo success; the men continued to collaborate. They are still one of the most commercially successful bands in history (and the first non-English speaking to achieve success in English speaking countries), but they had lost some of their luster by the time they picked up steam again thanks largely to 1994’s Muriel’s Wedding and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, movies that boasted extensive and brilliant ABBA soundtracks. An international re-release in 1989 led to use in these movies and two seminal Polygram albums – ABBA Gold Volume 1 and ABBA Gold Volume 2. Mamma Mia! is not ABBA’s first foray into the musical genre. Chess was another cultural phenomenon in the ‘80’s for Benny and Björn. A collaboration with Tim Rice (Cats), Chess was first a chart-topping concept album (including “One Night in Bangkok” and “I Know Him So Well”, covered by Whitney Houston and her mom Cissy) and then a West End smash hit. On Broadway...well, it closed quickly. Hollywood came calling and stirred controversy. Meryl Streep? Pierce Brosnan? Meryl had sung before on film, but double-oh seven? Really?? Colin Firth and Christine Baransky salved some wounds and it opened to mixed reviews in 2008. The men of ABBA have uncredited cameos in the film, Benny as the piano player and Björn as the Greek god. It did very well in the UK, becoming the 6th highest grossing movie in history. A sequel has been strongly hinted at. If you have the time, also watch ABBA – the Movie. So worth it. One last, random tidbit, dear, patient readers – there is an ABBA themed restaurant in Stockholm that opened this year called Tyrol where you are immersed in the Mamma Mia! experience – Hello, new top-of-my bucket list!
