ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to Western Canada Theatre’s 36th season, and my first as Artistic Director. I’m so excited to bring you this fantastic production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat. I know you’ll be blown away by this amazing cast and incredible show. It has been such a pleasure partnering with the Kamloops Thompson Honour Choir on this production and featuring forty of the region’s finest young performers! The 2011/12 season is all about community. It’s about working with organizations in our community, showcasing performers from our community and training the emerging artists from our community. This season is also a chance for WCT to shine as members of the national theatre community – showcasing our work at theatres like Theatre Calgary, the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver and the Chemainus Theatre Festival. This season is a chance for Kamloops audiences to take pride in this gem of a professional theatre that belongs to them. A chance to see everything from the finest theatrical classics, to big family musicals, to exciting new Canadian work. The productions will feature the best actors from Canada, Hollywood stars, and performers from the other side of the globe. And all here in Kamloops. That’s why, My Theatre is… Western Canada Theatre! Enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran Artistic Director PS – I hope you’ll join us for our next production - For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, starring Lorne Cardinal from TV’s Corner Gas, and multi award-wining performer Margo Kane, playing at Sagebrush from January 26 – February 4. This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Kamloops Thompson Honour Choirs’ commitment to fostering choral appreciation and excellence among the children of this community. Formed in 1975 by Mrs. Marion Owens, the School District’s music coordinator at the time, KTHC offers musically gifted children an opportunity to learn, develop skills and appreciate a vast selection of choral music. During their tenure with the choir, children learn the skills necessary to work as part of a team while developing their performance skills, music knowledge and self-confidence. The choir is sponsored in part by the Kamloops-Thompson School District as well as the Kamloops Thompson Honour Choir not-for-profit Society. Membership is by audition, first at the school level and then for the director, and there are currently 49 members comprised of students in grades 5 – 8 from throughout the Kamloops-Thompson School District. KTHC is a high calibre choral group and has represented their community honourably in different Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Victoria, and Whistler. They have received numerous awards and acknowledgements including receiving a 1st place award at the Performing Arts BC and a 2nd place award from the National Performing Arts Festival. The choir regularly competes in the Kamloops Performing Arts Festival as well as the Kiwanis Festival in Kelowna, and tours every spring. This year the KTHC is proud to add our participation in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat to our already extensive list of accomplishments. The children began learning the repertoire for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat in September and joined WCT actors in a challenging rehearsal schedule in October. The KTHC is currently directed by Mrs. Christy Gauley, a music specialist, and managed by Mrs. Leah Clare. Both are teachers in School District 73. We feel immensely privileged (as do our KTHC children and parents) for the opportunity to be involved in such a well loved professional-level musical. If you enjoyed listening to the KTHC as part of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, please join us for our annual Christmas concert at the Sagebrush Theatre, Sunday, December 11 at 6:30pm.

STARTING SMALL, STARTING POP

THE STORY OF JOSEPH

It all began with a little request. In mid-1967, Alan Doggett, head of the highly reputed Music Program at Colet Court, a prep school for boys aged 7-13 in London, asked Andrew Lloyd Webber to write a “pop cantata” which the school choir would sing at their next Easter term concert. There was a family connection at the school: Andrew’s brother had been a student at Colet. Indeed, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s family was (and remains) a musical powerhouse: his father, William Lloyd, an accomplished organist and composer, was until his death in 1982 director of the London School of Music, while his brother, Julian Lloyd, is a renowned solo cellist. Andrew himself, trained in music from an early age, was writing musical pieces by age nine. Immediately after the request, Andrew asked his good friend Tim Rice to write lyrics. The two had worked together on an earlier, unproduced musical, The Likes of Us, about Thomas John Barnardo, the UK philanthropist who established homes for destitute children, as well as on a half dozen individual pop songs. At first they explored spy themes—James Bond films were the rage then—until Tim suggested the biblical story of Joseph because, as he stated, “I’d always rather take a true story over an untrue one.” What they created in this short time span was a 20-minute cantata, a musical form perfectly suited to the exceptional abilities of Colet’s large choir and orchestra as well as its need for a religious narrative. As it was essentially a concert piece, there would be minimal need for any elaborate props or scenery. There was only one performance, on a winter afternoon in March 1968, but it went very well, so much so that a second performance was set for the following May at Central Hall, Westminster, the event now becoming truly a family affair. Andrew’s father played the organ, while brother Julian performed a recital of classical music in the first half. Although the audience consisted largely of Colet Court parents, there was one notable exception: Derek Jewell, music critic for the Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a highly favourable review: “Throughout its twenty-minute duration it bristles with wonderfully singable tunes. It entertains. It communicates instantly, as all good pop should.” A third performance took place that November, now at St. Paul’s Cathedral, with an expanded number of songs (“Potiphar” appeared for the first time), all of which was recorded and resulted in a Decca album; soon after this there was a management contract for Andrew and Tim to continue their creative work—with Joseph and other works such as Jesus Christ Superstar. Superstar, also appearing earlier on an album, as a rock opera, opened successfully on Broadway in 1971. Two years later, after numerous expansions on stage and in recordings, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, now full-size, opened in London’s West End. It began its Canadian run at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto in 1992 with Donny Osmond playing Joseph. Since then, Joseph has had a remarkable number of productions, put on by over 20,000 groups—professional, school, and amateur—according to Webber’s Really Useful Group, his management company. Audiences in many countries have loved its simple, uplifting story, its goodnatured humour, its pastiche of upbeat music styles, and yes, the sheer colour of the fabled world it depicts, all dressed up and shining like that amazing dreamcoat!
