ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to Western Canada Theatre’s 36th season, and my first as Artistic Director. I’m so glad you have joined us for this hilarious production of Noises Off. Michael Frayn’s farce is truly one of the finest backstage comedies ever written. This script puts you, the audience, right in the middle of the dress rehearsal for an ill-fated, imaginary farce called Nothing On. You get to watch as the actors and director struggle valiantly to get their production ready for an audience. Then in Act 2, you are transported backstage for a sneak-peak at all of the highjinx that ensue behind the scenes. And then finally in Act 3, we get to watch the pandemonium from the audience point of view as the production is performed, not very successfully, for ticket-buyers. It is a very funny look at the “theatre biz” and all the things that could go wrong while making a play. WCT’s 2011/12 season is all about community. It’s about working with organizations in our community, showcasing performers from our community and training the emerging artists from our community. And our production of Noises Off is the perfect illustration of this. I’m very proud that this production features FOUR performers from Kamloops – Janet Michael, Kirk Smith, Christopher Weddell and Anita Wittenberg. The set was designed by Kamloops’ own Ross Nichol. And it was directed by yet another “Kamloopsian”… me! It’s a real tribute to the amount of talent we have right here in this community. I’m also excited to welcome Lindsey Angell, Thom Marriott and Robyn Wallis to the WCT stage – and to welcome back Andrew Cownden and Leon Willey, both of whom you’ll recognize from our recent production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Our design team also includes the incredible Sheila White, Adrian Muir and Paul Tedeschini. What a company! I’d like to extend a huge thank you to our partners at the Chemainus Theatre Festival on Vancouver Island. After this production closes here, it is headed to the Chemainus Theatre Festival where it will play for 6 weeks. I’m very proud that WCT’s top quality work is being showcased around the province! I hope you’ll join us for our next production, UBUNTU (The Cape Town Project), playing here at Sagebrush Theatre from March 29 – April 7. It’s a show I created in Cape Town, and features actors from South Africa alongside actors from Canada. It’s filled with movement and music, and a fantastic story. I know you’ll love it! And all here in Kamloops. That’s why, My Theatre is… Western Canada Theatre! Enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran Artistic Director PS – On a personal note… Holly and I are very excited to welcome our new son, Jack, to the family. Jack was born December 5th, here in Kamloops. Our 3 year old son Liam is enjoying his new role as a big brother. And none of us are getting any sleep…

PLAYWRIGHT Michael Frayn Playwright At WCT: Debut. Film/ TV: Copenhagen (2002); Remember Me? (1997); Screen Two (1994); Noises Off (1992); First and Last (1989); Theatre Night (1987); Galeria Oberta, Clockwise (1986); Great Railway Journeys of the World (1980); Alphabetical Order (1978); Pleasure at Her Majesty's (1976); But Seriously, It's Sheila Hancock, Beyond a Joke (1972); The Wednesday Play (1967); Second City Reports (1964) & That Was the Week That Was (1962). Et Cetera: English dramatist, columnist, reporter and translator Michael Frayn was born on September 8, 1933, in the suburbs of London. His mother, a once promising young violinist, died when Frayn was only 12, and his father, a rep for an asbestos and roofing materials firm, was forced to withdraw the young boy from the expensive private school he was used to attending in favor of a cheaper public education. Frayn, however, thrived in this new environment. Growing up in Ewell,

south London, he displayed a talent for music and poetry, and by the time he was a teenager, he knew that he wanted to be a writer of some sort. After two years National Service, during which he learned Russian, he read Philosophy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He then worked as a reporter and columnist for The Guardian and The Observer, publishing several novels. He is probably best known as the author of the farce Noises Off and the dramas Copenhagen and Democracy. His novels, such as Towards the End of the Morning, Headlong and Spies, have also been critical and commercial successes, making him one of the handful of writers in the English language to succeed in both drama and prose fiction. He has also translated a number of plays from Russian, including plays by Chekhov and Tolstoy. His works often raise philosophical questions in a humorous context. Frayn's wife is Claire Tomalin, the biographer and literary journalist.

NOISES OFF, NOTHING ON, &

THEATRICAL ASIDES

What you are seeing tonight is a classic farce, one of the best written and certainly one of the funniest! Here, before you begin laughing uncontrollably, a few theatrical asides: The playwright: Spends his youth in a London suburb, then two years of national service, learns Russian, reads Moral Sciences for a philosophy degree at Cambridge University. Afterwards a reporter and columnist for The Guardian and The Observer. Establishes a solid reputation as a satirist, begins writing plays and novels. The major plays: A thoughtful moral philosopher with a grin, in Copenhagen he stages a historical event when, in 1941, with Denmark under Nazi occupation, physicist Niels Bohr meets with the German founder of quantum physics, Werner Heisenberg. Should scientists work on nuclear weapons? In Democracy he dramatizes the shaky relationship between West German chancellor Willy Brandt and his personal assistant Gunter Guillaume, a man he must expose as an East German spy. Other writing: A successful novelist (ten, by my count, including Headlong, shortlisted for Booker Prize), philosopher (Constructions, The Human Touch), translator of Chekhov, Tolstoy and Anouilh, and scriptwriter for film and television. Origin of Noises Off: In 1970, having written one of his first plays, the farce Chinamen, about a disastrous dinner party in which all the characters, hosts and guests alike, are played by two actors, he watches a performance from the wings, notices that “it was funnier from behind than in front.” Plans to write such a play. He does: It begins as a short one-acter called Exits, for a program of plays at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1977. The director, Michael Blakemore, suggests he expand the play, also provides good ideas. Noises Off opens at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1982. Since then, many rewrites and plenty of successful productions. Frank Rich, theatre critic of The New York Times, calls it the funniest farce he has seen. Farce: Look for the standard madcap pace and quirky parade of characters in extremis—those foolish members of the (usually) middle class: the predatory lovers, conniving servants, lunatic acquaintances, even pesky inanimate objects, all obsessive, all wanting one thing very, very badly, whether it’s money, romance, revenge, a job, a friend, maybe just peace and quiet in the back of the theatre or a plate of sardines! They want it so badly that, well, anything goes, and we can expect a veritable torrent of tricks and counter-tricks, carried out via deceitful intentions, mistaken identities, sexual innuendo, and knockabout physical comedy, not to mention recalcitrant props, interfering scenery, and, yes, plenty of slamming doors. A World of Farce: It’s been said that farce treats the improbable as probable, the impossible as possible. I would add that it does this at such an incredibly frenetic pace and with such a relentless commitment to its own twisted logic, that we almost don’t notice the gaping incongruities. In the closed, mad world of farce, everything oddly seems to make sense. Could it be that this somehow reflects our own “sane” world of reality? Could it be that, just as in this screwball play-within-aplay, we actually live in a driven, conniving society, a laughable comedy of everyday chicanery and farcical sex? James Hoffman Professor of Theatre Thompson Rivers University

AQUAMARINE March’s Birthstone The name aquamarine is derived from the Roman, “aqua” meaning water and “mare” meaning sea. Aquamarines were believed to have originated f r o m the jewel caskets of sirens, washed ashore from the depths. They were also believed to protect wearers from the perils & monsters of the sea. These associations made them the sailor’s gem.
