WELCOME TO OUR 40th SEASON It’s our 40th anniversary! For 40 years this incredible company has been producing great theatre for audiences in Kamloops and across Canada. WCT has had a remarkable impact on the national theatre landscape, producing premieres of important new Canadian work, training some of Canada’s finest theatre professionals, and showcasing our work and our artists across this country. To celebrate, this season WCT productions are playing from coast to coast, from Vancouver all the way to St. John’s, with stops in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario in between! We’re also celebrating by featuring the work of some amazing Kamloops’ artists: a world premiere by Kamloops’ own Janet Michael (Habib’s Unforgettable All Night House Party), a beautiful new play set in Kamloops and performed by Kamloops mother and daughter Anita Wittenberg and Emma Tow (In a Blue Moon), and a hilarious solo show featuring WCT favourite Holly Lewis (Miss Caledonia). We’re reuniting the cast of our fast-paced favourite farce Boeing Boeing (including Kamloops’ own Kirk Smith) for the even zanier sequel Don’t Dress for Dinner. We’re also revisiting one of the most requested shows in WCT’s history, the incredibly popular (and incredibly scary) thriller I’ll Be Back Before Midnight. Plus some good ol’ country music (A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline), and a visit from Mary Poppins to celebrate the holidays! During our 40 years, WCT has become renowned for developing and showcasing First Nations voices. This year, to celebrate, our High-Wire Festival will present three new plays in development, all featuring First Nations voices and artists. Plus, we’re offering more great programming created specifically for young children, featuring the WCT/TRU Young Company. We’re so proud of WCT’s 40 Years of Great Theatre Across Canada! and so happy you could be a part of it. Thank you for joining us to celebrate this true Kamloops success story!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director Much has changed in the world since 1975: I think there was one computer in our entire school, and no one could even have conceived of the internet or its impact. A true Canadian voice was just beginning to take its place on the national stage, and small regional theatre companies were appearing on the landscape beyond the big stages of the Stratford Festival, the Shaw Festival and even the fairly new National Arts Centre. Plays like The Ecstasy of Rita Joe were appearing alongside English and American standards, asking questions truly Canadian in nature. Western Canada Theatre Company, under the intrepid leadership of Tom Kerr, his board, his staff and the dedicated artists, was a part of this revolution. That WCT is now 40 years old is a testament not only to the leaders and staff members and artists who came after, but also to this community. Kamloops and region understood the value of a vibrant arts community and supported WCT from its inception to now. Today, WCT continues to contribute to the dialogue on the Canadian experience and holds a unique place within the national landscape, helping to make Kamloops one of the most liveable cities in the country. Thank you for joining us on this journey!

Lori Marchand, General Manager 3

Kamloops Paint and Window Coverings New location: 771 Notre Dame Drive

WCT: 40 Years Plus of History “Let’s put on a show!” “Create a company!” “Build a theatre!” These are the calls to dream that made Western Canada Theatre. Visionary artistic directors have made the call and carried others along on their dream: passionate Board members, civic and corporate supporters, hardworking staff members and dedicated volunteers. The nationally recognized professional theatre company we are today began with the courage of a high-school drama teacher to dream, dedicated students with an ambition for theatre, and the persistent support of parents and teachers. Under that drama teacher, Tom Kerr (pictured right), the fledgling North Kamloops PTA Theatre Wing gave students their first performance experiences here and in local and provincial festivals, at the same time it promoted artistic pride within Kamloops. Even in its first decade in the 1960s, they achieved recognition, with Tom receiving the Best Director Award in the Canadian Finals at the Dominion Drama Festival in PEI. By 1968, the group, had evolved under the name of Western Canada Youtheatre, in recognition of the number of students from all around Western Canada who trained with the company, and included a mix of student and professional actors. It was ready to strike out into the world! In its first tour of Britain, the company presented the world premiere of Jump in London and Fragments and Chamber Music in Edinburgh. In 1973, under the banner of Western Canada Theatre Company (WCTC), they returned to present the European premiere of George Ryga’s The Ecstasy of Rita Joe at the Edinburgh Theatre, winning the prestigious Fringe First Award. The transition from amateur youth theatre to professional theatre culminated in 1975, when Western Canada Theatre Company was officially incorporated. In the early years, WCT (which dropped the second “C” in 1999) was a bit of a nomad, moving offices on a regular basis and putting on plays where space allowed. So, how exciting it was when, after much effort, the Kamloops Senior Secondary auditorium was rebuilt as Sagebrush Theatre and opened in 1978! Then, the old cattle auction house on Lorne Street began its conversion into the Pavilion Theatre, with proper offices and a black box theatre, in 1984. Through these years, Tom Kerr’s vision was carried on by new artistic directors, who each brought their own stamp to the company. First under Frank Glassen (1976 to 1979) and then, with speed, Michael Dobbin (1979 to 1983), WCT’s production offerings and subscription base expanded exponentially, and Michael introduced Stage One Theatre Company. By the time Michael left, WCT was a mainstay of Kamloops’ cultural circuit. The sense that Kamloops wouldn’t be the same without WCT continued to grow under Artistic Director David Ross, who embodied the company from 1983 until 2009. David sought projects that developed new Canadian works, with a particular focus on local stories and on the First Nations of our region, stories that touch and inspire, while entertaining us. Here are some of the more significant plays WCT commissioned and/or premiered under David: Boris Karloff Slept Here, collectively written – 1985 – First Nations/European contact in early Kamloops’ history Flyin’ Phil, by Ian Weir & Judi Bryson – 1992 – Phil Gaglardi, from local humble beginnings to political prince The McLean Boys, by Ian Weir with Judi Weir – 1996 – The local story of the outlaw First Nations/European brothers 15

We would love to hear your story of how WCT has touched your life. Did it help you choose a career, a relationship, inspire you in a life decision? The big-scale holiday musicals introduced by David Ross, with first Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and then Seussical, were resounding hits with audiences – and great fun. The new tradition continued under AD Jeremy Tow (2009 to 2011 seasons), with My Fair Lady, and continues with the present AD, Daryl Cloran, who in his time has directed three musicals, each one bigger, brighter and more exciting than the previous. This season, Daryl directs Mary Poppins, once again the biggest, brightest, most dazzling show we’ve ever done. CMYK

WCT Alumni - Where They Are Today WCT has a mandate to both nurture young talent and introduce new Canadian plays. This has allowed WCT the privilege to be at the beginning of the careers of many successful theatre artists, many of whom return to the WCT fold from time to time. Kevin Kerr remembers WCT for playing “a key role through the years in my development as a theatre artist. I admire (and have greatly benefited from) their commitment to the development of local talent and their work at maintaining those relationships ... as artists mature.” A few of our alumni: Students of Tom Kerr, Westsyde & Kam High Drama teacher and first Artistic Director of WCT: Brent Carver – Tony-award-winning actor on Broadway Keith Dinicol – a member of the acting company at the Stratford Festival Gabrielle Rose – one of Canada’s leading film and television actresses From Kamloops high schools to WCT volunteers, to apprenticeships, to first jobs and then on to the world (Jeff and Samantha, top and middle pictures): Jeff Cummings – Planning Director, Shaw Festival, Niagara-on-the-Lake Roger Lantz – Production Manager, Persephone Theatre, Saskatoon Samantha MacDonald – Associate Artistic Producer, Lunchbox Theatre, Calgary Worked at WCT early in their careers, honing their skills: Susan Ferley – Artistic Director of the Grand Theatre, London, Ontario Jeff Pitcher – Artistic Director of Theatre Newfoundland Labrador Roy Surette – Artistic and Executive Director of the Centaur Theatre, Montreal Kamloops and Vernon students who went on to form Vancouver’s influential Electric Company as co-Artistic Directors: Kim Collier – award-winning performer/producer Kevin Kerr – playwright, performer, Governor General’s Literary Award recipient for Unity (1918) (at WCT 2003) (lower picture) Jonathan Young – actor, as well as a writer and designer Inspired to enter theatre from courses at Cariboo College/UCC/TRU: Lorne Cardinal – actor, best known for the TV shows Corner Gas and Arctic Air Kevin Loring – Governor General Award-winning playwright of Where the Blood Mixes (at WCT 2012, first workshopped at WCT 2008); also an actor

WCT for Young People - wctlive.ca WCT has not forgotten its roots in youth theatre. The importance of youth education in the arts and providing children and youth opportunities to express their passion through theatre – as audience members, acting students or production interns – still persists. • Thousands of students enjoy SCHOOL MATINEES and a WCT-produced STUDY GUIDE every season; for many, it is their first introduction to live theatre. • Through WCT’S STAGE ONE THEATRE SCHOOL, children and youth find their voice and confidence, skills they take into other areas of their lives. And some of those students go on to work on professional stages, including in this season’s WCT holiday show, Mary Poppins. • Our INTERNSHIP and APPRENTICESHIP programs, as well as MENTORING, provide essential career development experience to theatre artists just launching their careers. • The new FAMILY SERIES of plays is a wonderful opportunity not only to introduce very young children to theatre but also to work with TRU theatre students. This season: THE VELVETEEN RABBIT - May 14, 2016 - more information on page 7. • Our annual HALLOWE’EN FAMILY DANCE PARTY is a free fabulous event for the whole family, with games and dancing and healthy snacks – October 31, 10am to noon - FREE 18
