ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to Western Canada Theatre and the third production of our Stagebrush series! We’re thrilled to present this zesty new comedy, which comes to us from one of Canada’s hottest new playwrights, Mark Crawford. Full of razor-sharp wit, snappy dialogue, insight on todays’ world, and belly-busting comedy, Mark’s plays are being produced coast to coast to rapturous applause. We’re also pleased this play continues our collaboration with Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, Ontario, a partnership we look forward to continuing next season with a fantastic musical to be announced soon! A few words about our upcoming shows: In February, coinciding with the BC Winter Games and the Winter Olympics, we’ll bring you the world premiere of Tracey Power’s GLORY, the amazing true story of the 1930’s Canadian women’s champion hockey team, the Preston Rivulettes. This exhilarating, heart-stopping production is great for anyone who loves our national game, with hockey sequences staged as you’ve never seen them before – with pulse-pounding swing dance music. We close our Sagebrush series with Corey Payette’s beautiful, dramatic, uplifting musical Children of God, which tells a story of the residential schools system. This production was originally developed here at WCT in 2016 and played last season in Vancouver and Ottawa. I saw it twice last year, and it moved me to laughter and tears both times – it is filled with moments of unforgettable theatrical magic. As part of our continuing involvement in the important dialogue around reconciliation, we will be hosting talkbacks after every performance to encourage communication and understanding. At WCT we believe that our job is to not only entertain, but to contribute to important conversations promoting equality, understanding, and community spirit. We thank our community sponsors and donors, and acknowledge the contributions from the Canada Council of the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council, and the City of Kamloops for their visionary support. Finally, you’ve probably all heard the news that our Executive Director, Lori Marchand, has taken a position in the new Indigenous Theatre Section of Canada’s National Arts Centre, starting in April. Lori has been with us for 18 years, and we can’t thank her enough for her work in building this company, as well as her service to our city. We’re excited for her and wish her well in her new adventure. We also look forward to it as an opportunity to build a new partner at the NAC! As always, we welcome your feedback - I can be reached at james@wctlive.ca. Enjoy the show, and feel free to tell your friends! James MacDonald Artistic Director, Western Canada Theatre

BEE FUN FACTS Worldwide, there are around 25,000 different types of bee species. In Canada, there are about 800 species of native bees.

TURKEY FUN FACTS Today’s domestic turkey varieties descend from a turkey variety raised in central Mexico that was imported into Europe by the Spanish in the 16th century. The English name “turkey” results from an early misidentification of the bird with an unrelated species that was imported to Europe through the country of Turkey.

• There are three kinds of bees in a hive: Queen, Worker & Drone. • Only the Queen in the hive lays eggs, around 1,500 eggs per day. • The worker bees are all female, and they do all the work for the hive: cleaning, feeding the baby bees, feeding & caring for the queen, packing pollen & nectar into cells, building & repairing honeycombs, fanning to cool the hive & guarding the hive. • The drones are male bees; their only purpose is to mate with a queen. They are not welcome to spend the winter in the hive, as they would eat precious food needed to keep the hive alive.

IN KAMLOOPS, “BC” = BEE CITY

BEE FUN FACTS

A year ago, Kamloops became the first city in BC to be designated a Bee City. There are now 9 such communities across the country registered with Bee City Canada! Being a Bee City commits businesses and community organizations to doing as much as they can to create healthy ecosystems for bees.

Why? Honey bees were introduced to North America from Europe. Today, they, along with wild pollinators, are essential to agricultural crops, contributing an estimated $470 million to the economy in British Columbia and over $2 billion in Canada. In BC, there are more than 2,300 beekeepers, with about 47,000 colonies and as many as two billion bees. Worldwide, there are signs that managed bees and wild pollinators are under stress and, in a number of cases, in decline. At the same time, the need for pollination services for many agricultural crops continues to grow. How to be involved: Plant flowers, including native varieties, and edible gardens that are bee friendly and create more green space. Keep your garden pesticide free and buy pesticide free plants. Consider asking your local garden centre or plant nursery to join the Bee Friendly Grower program. Start beekeeping: Kamloops Beekeepers offers courses, field days and membership to support local beekeepers. Their next introductory course is March 17 & 23. Information on this course and much more on beekkeeping can be found at: www.kamloopsbeekeepers.com. Sources: CBC Kamloops, BC Agriculture, Kamloops Beekeepers, Bee City Canada, onegreenplanet.org

SUPPORT WCT • MAKE AN IMPACT

While you know Western Canada Theatre is one of the premier arts organizations in BC, do you know that it is also a registered charity? Box office sales account for only 25% of the income. WCT relies on its generous supporters to meet its ambitions while keeping live theatre accessible. Your support helps bring the vision of exciting writers, actors, directors and designers to life and inspire the audiences of today and future generations.
