WELCOME
Leonard Cohen’s songs have a quality that transcends musical and theatrical genres. His music has been interpreted by a diversity of artists for concert, dance, poetry, and even visual art. The songs themselves have been covered by countless musical artists from a dizzying array of genres and musical styles, from pop to country to hard rock. Cohen is a musical artist whose fame as a performer came late in life – until middle-age, he was best known as either a coffee house poet or as a songwriter for other artists. Our enjoyment and appreciation of his work comes from his fundamental brilliance as a lyricist and musician who portrays love, loss, and humanity with charm, expressive use of words, and witty turns of phrase. Chelsea Hotel pays tribute to Cohen’s genius with beautiful new musical arrangements and a dramatic, playful reinterpretation of his poetic storytelling. The narrative of the plot is loosely based on his lyrics, but is meant to more evocative of the feeling and emotional provocation of each individual song. The company are a dazzling array of musical and vocal talents – we were treated to their gifts at the beginning of the pandemic, when they played a highly successful virtual concert of the songs of the show from the balconies of the motel at which they were sequestered after the production was postponed. That livestream was one of the most watched theatrical offerings in Canada last year, and we’re immensely proud to have them back to share their brilliance with you. Once again, many thanks for returning to WCT this season, and thanks for your patience as we work within ever-evolving theatre capacities and arrangements. We’re so happy to have you back. Enjoy!

CREATOR’S NOTES Creating a new piece of theatre is such a rewarding and exhilarating experience. When the piece being created is brought to life through the lyrics and poetry of Leonard Cohen, creative inspiration is limitless. Much in the same way Cohen uses words to paint a poetic picture, I used his songs as inspiration to a paint a theatrical one. Thank you to all those who since 2011 have entered and believed in Chelsea Hotel. Thank you always to Steve Charles for his musical brilliance, to James MacDonald for his influence and heart, and to this incredible company who joined me for this creative journey with such trust, passion, and artistry. This is a poetic story of love, of pain, of artistic struggle that begins and ends with Cohen’s words but lives within us. Chelsea Hotel premiered at the Firehall Arts Centre, Vancouver BC in February 2012 and went on to tour and play over three hundred shows. Thank you to Marshall McMahen, Ted Roberts, and Barbara Clayden for their original designs and to Donna Spencer, Artistic Producer at the Firehall, for her incredible support of the premiere production. Every show needs a champion, and I was very lucky to find this in her. I invite you to lose yourself in our world and feel Cohen’s songs once again, for the very first time.

ARTIST PROFILE ABOUT LEONARD COHEN “For nearly half a century, the novelist, ladies’ man, and Buddhist monk built a tower of song – even though darkness was never far off” –MIKAL GILMORE, Rolling Stone,
on the occasion of Cohen’s death on November 7, 2016
Leonard Norman Cohen was born in Westmount, Montreal into a middle-class Jewish family in 1934. A singer, songwriter, poet, and novelist, Cohen explored religion, politics, isolation, depression, sexuality, loss, death, and romantic relationships in his work. Having studied English at McGill, Cohen pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s; he did not launch a music career until 1967, at the age of 33. In 1960, Cohen had moved to the Greek island of Hydra, where he began his famous affair with Marianne Ihlen, the first of a series of romances. It was there that he wrote his second novel Beautiful Losers, which was critically controversial, but didn’t pay the rent. His career as a songwriter began with Judy Collins recording “Suzanne” in 1966. With her encouragement, he began performing live himself in 1967. The following year Columbia released his debut Songs of Leonard Cohen. Journalist Mikal Gilmore explains that album’s appeal: “The record clearly established a reputation for Cohen as somebody who spoke for those who feel lost and are in search of any saving grace, whether it be religion or sex.” It was during this time that Cohen had a single-room residence at the Chelsea Hotel. Following Songs of Leonard Cohen, he produced three more albums of folk music. His 1977 record Death of a Ladies’ Man, co-written and produced by Phil Spector, was a move away from Cohen’s previous minimalist sound. In 1979, Cohen returned with the more traditional Recent Songs, which blended his acoustic style with jazz, Oriental, and Mediterranean influences. Perhaps Cohen’s most famous song, “Hallelujah”, was first released on his studio album Various Positions in 1984. I’m Your Man in 1988 marked Cohen’s turn to synthesized productions. Shortly after Cohen’s release of The Future, at a time when he seemed on top of the world, he withdrew, at the age of 58, to a Zen monastery outside of Los Angeles. Cohen returned to music in 2001 with the release of Ten New Songs, which was a major hit in Canada and Europe. Then, in 2004, Cohen discovered that his manager and close friend Kelley Lynch had been stealing from him since 1996, to the tune of $5 million, leaving him in a financially precarious position. So, at 77, Cohen launched at concert tour that sparked a remarkable comeback. Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest civilian honour. In 2011, Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize. He had two children with Suzanne Elrod (not the Suzanne of the song): Adam and Lorca.
SHOW PROFILE ALLUSION AND ILLUSION IN TRACEY POWER’S CHELSEA HOTEL Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be transported by Tracey Power’s Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen. I certainly was – but, thankfully, not in the way I imagined. As a Canadian literature specialist with a particular fondness for Mr. Cohen, I approached the script anticipating a nostalgic trip based on the biographical touchstones of Leonard’s life – his romances, his dalliances, his hit songs and lauded KAYLA NICKEL, STEVE CHARLES, BENJAMIN ELLIOTT, MARLENE GINADER and KRYSTLE DOS SANTOS in the Firehall Arts Centre Production poetry and prose in chronological of Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen order, interspersed with, say, his Directed by TRACEY POWER, Set MARSHAL McMAHEN, Costumes BARBARA CLAYDEN, Lighting TED ROBERTS | Photo by EMILY COOPER refusal in 1968 of the Governor General’s Award, on the grounds that “the poems ... forbid it [acceptance] absolutely.” I hoped for a revisiting of his memorable 1991 speech of acceptance into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, in which he concluded that the award had come at the best possible time: “at 56, hell, I’m just hitting my stride.” There’s none of that here. Think carnival mirror, rather than window. Chelsea Hotel is not a biography or a conventional tribute. It’s closer to an interpretation – but an indirect one. For instance, don’t expect it to weigh in on that naive question that, I confess, preoccupied me as an undergraduate student: what does “Suzanne” really mean? What Power has created with this evocative, allusive, and illusive piece is a transporting vehicle that is the theatrical equivalent of Leonard Cohen’s audio and narrative output, a study of the angst and loneliness of the creator/writer (in general, not Leonard Cohen specifically) and a Brechtian/ Expressionistic/Carnivalesque tour-de-force that, like Cohen’s work, hits all the right notes by going off in its own idiosyncratic direction. This play is, appropriately, more concerned with interiors than exteriors. It goes for – and achieves – a deeper truth than conventional biography.

...CONT’D. “ALLUSION AND ILLUSION IN TRACEY POWER’S CHELSEA HOTEL” Lyrics from Cohen’s 1977 “Paper Thin Hotel” form a refrain in the play – “It’s written on the walls of this hotel/ You go to heaven/ Once you’ve been to hell” – that neatly encapsulates the act of creation. As shadowy romantic figures float – to musical accompaniment – into and out of the unnamed Writer’s imagination, they tempt him away from his vocation with love, sex, and drugs. All is transitory, though, and one figure replaces another. True to memory, dream, and imagination, this is not a chronological unfolding, and some figures recur. The mood, the atmosphere, of imagination is not static; nor is it bound by realism: expect surreal, circus-like vignettes – complete with highs and lows – and expect things to change shape – to transform before your very eyes. Writing, music, and lovers are of a piece – even as they interfere with each other, Discover New Ideas, they blur, blend, and instigate each other. Like Cohen’s “Suzanne,” 1967 debut single, and so much of his subsequent work, Chelsea Hotel resists easy classification and interpretation. Fittingly, Tracey Power takes us from the realm of the mundane to an alternate reality of grit, melancholy, beauty, and joy. We are richer for the journey. – GINNY RATSOY

A SHOW WORTH WAITING FOR.
A year-and-a-half ago, in March of 2020, the cast and crew of Chelsea Hotel were gearing up for the WCT debut of this amazing show. Little did they know, their first day of rehearsal would be their last. While the cast remained in Kamloops, waiting to hear what the outcome of the new restrictions would be, the decision was made to put production on hold, and - with some ingenuity from everyone involved - a one-day concert version was live-streamed from the Riverland Motel. It ended up being one of the most watched live-streamed theatrical events in Canada that year. The set sat in storage, waiting for its chance to finally be installed on the Sagebrush stage. Nobody imagined it would be this long, but the show will finally go on (with a few changes), and we know you’ll agree that it was worth the wait. We encourage everyone to keep all of the artists, technicians, and designers, whose lives have been on hold all this time, in their hearts. As life begins to return to normal, the effects will be felt for some time, and we want them to know that we are grateful to all of them for their perseverence and heart. STEVE CHARLES, CHARLIE GALLANT, TRACEY POWER and MARLENE GINADER Perform a live-streamed concert version of Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen in front of the Riverland Motel. | DREW FACEY’s set sits, waiting in the WCT shop.
