WELCOME At long last, welcome back. It’s great to be here with you all to kick off WCT’s 21/22 Season! We are excited to open this diverse new season with a theatrical offering unlike anything you’ve seen at WCT. Red Sky Performance is one of the foremost contemporary Indigenous performance companies in North America, renowned for works that defy expectation and genre. We’re thrilled to bring their engaging theatrical storytelling to you. Get ready to experience kinetic, high-energy storytelling at its best. The visceral energy created through movement and music provokes a powerful human, emotional response. It is one of the reasons why movement and dance are such a compelling form of theatre – the ability to reach the emotions and minds of the audience in a fully-engaged, sensory experience. The arts are such an important aspect of the development of vibrant, healthy communities – the emotional charge and lift that comes from experiencing exuberant live performance with others brings us together, and exposure to works of different disciplines can be powerfully inspiring to young people. With another seven plays and musicals, we know you’ll love the rest of our dynamic season as well. There is something for everyone – from wonderful, warm comedy to musical explorations, from family stories of Indigenous language revitalization to exhilarating journeys through time. And of course, here in the Sagebrush we wrap up with the greatest family fantasy musical of all, capping two years where we have truly learned to value that “there is no place like home.” It’s not too late to subscribe and see everything in the incredible 21/22 Season line-up! You can apply the cost of your single ticket to a season subscription and secure the best prices for all shows. Contact the Box Office to learn more – and tell them James sent you. Our WCT company, including our tremendous staff and volunteers, deserve an immense amount of gratitude for their fortitude, patience, and dedication throughout the past couple of years, so I extend my appreciation to them. And finally, of course, to all of you – professional live theatre would not exist in Kamloops without the tremendous support of our patrons, donors, and supporters. We can’t thank you enough. Enjoy!

RED SKY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE Trace is a highly kinetic contemporary dance and music work inspired by Indigenous (Anishinaabe) sky and star stories, offering a glimpse into our origin as well as our future evolution. We are traceable to the beginnings of the universe, our ancestral origins stretching across the Milky Way to the atoms burning inside of us in the here and now. Trace is a sumptuous creation that looks at all things traceable and what we leave behind as humans, as a culture, as a nation, and as an individual. Trace leads us right back to source, to origin, so the question becomes what is our origin as Indigenous peoples? As Anishinaabe? The search for origin takes us to the beginning of time where we originated in the core of a star a long time ago. As Anishinaabe, we are known as the star people. We deeply thank all of our relations and the Indigenous people of this land.

YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS!

After 19 months of our theatres being dark, we are immensely proud to be gathering our creative community to share their passion and craft with you. Thanks to your support, our stages are able to reopen. Thanks to you, our community is able to gather once again. As a donor, you are at the heart of everything WCT accomplishes, and everything we have done together to build our city and our region for the past 47 years. Your belief, appreciation, encouragement, and foresight makes what you will see tonight possible. Thank you for recognizing the value and impact of the arts in our community. Arts and cultural institutions strengthen communities. The arts opens up worlds of wonder and imagination, offering wonderful entertainment for audiences of all ages. As community builders, the arts improves mental health and wellness, fosters empathy, reflects community identity and understanding. Arts education not only ensures the audiences and artists of the future, it promotes valuable life skills for young people and improves academic performance. And if the past year has taught us anything, it is that we need moments of human connection, community gathering, and shared experience more than ever. WCT is one of Canada’s most celebrated regional theatres. It is the creative home of worldclass actors, directors, playwrights, designers, and technicians. It is a training ground for young people. Perhaps most importantly, we give voice to Canadian and Indigenous artists in our play development and production, and plays originating at WCT enrich the Canadian theatrical landscape for decades to come. We hope that when the lights go down this season, you are moved, inspired, and most of all, proud. We are able to do this because of you. Thank you.
