WELCOME On behalf of all of us at WCT, welcome to our 43rd season of live, professional theatre. As Elf says, It’s great to be here! This season, our plays celebrate the passionate, the brave, the brilliant, and the delightfully ridiculous. There are two world premieres, two toe-tapping, leap-from-your-seat musicals, and shows that have played to acclaim across Canada. It’s great to be at the theatre—it’s a place of imagination, of sharing time with friends and family, and of celebrating our city and community. Kamloops has been my home for two years now, and like many of us, I feel so lucky to live in this wonderful part of the world. It is my honour and joy to help tell stories that bring us together, teach us something about ourselves, and make us smile, cry, sing and cheer. We are also proud of our work in developing new Canadian and Indigenous stories that speak to us here at home and carry the name of Kamloops across the country. We invite you to join us on the journey this season, and to be as proud of Western Canada Theatre as we are—it belongs to all of us.

MADE IN ITALY He’s Back!
Farren Timoteo returns with MA DE I N ITALY—a raucous coming-of-age story about an Italian teenager growing up in Jasper in the 1970s, caught between two worlds and determined to make his mark. Filled with great songs (Italian and Disco!) and smart comedy, this is a not-to-be-missed tale about a kid with the heart of Rocky Balboa and the moves (and hair) of John Travolta.

Yo u t h o u g h t y o u k n e w y o u r f a m i l y… A comic clash of wits, will, and personality. Two very different sisters, one a Kamloopsian, meet at their childhood home to pack their cantankerous mother off to a retirement community. An old flame comes to visit bearing wine, charm… and a big surprise. A quirky new comedy about sibling rivalry and how to live life to the fullest.
The Man… The Music… The Legend... The rocking, rolling story of Buddy Holly’s meteoric rise to fame as the world’s top recording artist, from the moment in 1957 when That’ll Be the Day hit the airwaves, until his tragic death less than two years later on “The Day the Music Died”. The show features over 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest hits, including Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Everyday, Not Fade Away, and Raining In My Heart, plus Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba and The Big Bopper’s Chantilly Lace!
How do you discover yourself when Columbus already did? Come along on a hilarious road trip to Kamloopa,
one of the largest powwows in the world, with two sisters and a rambunctious trickster. Facing the world head on, the sisters navigate through twists and corkscrew turns on their journey to embrace what it means to honour who they are and where they come from. This world premiere is a raucous comedy about courage, identity, and reclaiming the power of your ancestry. Strong Language Advisory. This political, feminist, and daring comedy contains mature topics and profanity.

Unity forged in battle.
This remarkable story of bravery, romance, and sacrifice follows a group of Canadian soldiers convalescing in a field hospital after facing the horrors of Vimy Ridge. The soldiers battle with their memories of the past, as a young nurse from Nova Scotia tends to their wounds both obvious and concealed in this striking WWI drama from Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen.
WCT Artistic Director James MacDonald directed the highly praised premiere of Vimy and is proud to revise it here in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. “A victory of a play”—Globe and Mail
SAGEBRUSH
November 29 to December 12, 2018 Embrace your inner Elf!
ELF The Musical is the zany tale of Buddy, who as an orphan baby was mistakenly transported to the North Pole in Santa’s bag of gifts. The would-be elf grows up in Santa’s workshop unaware he is human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities force him to face the truth about his origins. Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help a cynical urban world remember the true meaning of Christmas. “ELF is happy enough for families and plenty smart for adults!” —Variety

From the world-renowned creative team behind the Mom’s the Word series comes a new chapter in their stories of family and fracas. Their kids are grown, their marriages have “evolved,” and their bodies are backfiring. Life doesn’t get any prettier, but it never strays far from ludicrous or poignant as the moms continue to mine their personal history for every uproarious and embarrassing detail. Filled with insights, secrets, and ribald humour. Featuring Kamloops playwright, director, and performer Robin Nichol.
Two generations and the silence between them.

This exciting world premiere, playing for the very first time here in Kamloops, is by Bonnie Green, Associate Producer of the Stratford Festival.
A new generation of laughs.
A funny and moving one-man show by former CBC broadcaster Tetsuro Shigematsu about his rocky relationship with his emotionally reserved father, Akira. From the ashes of Hiroshima to swinging 1960s London, this acclaimed play shows how Akira’s incredible personal history has influenced two generations. Through visually striking live, cinematic vignettes, Tetsuro paints an intimate portrait of the evolving connection between father and son.
