WELCOME
As we wrap up our unconventional 2021/22 Season, we reflect on a year that has brought home the resilience, power, and strength of communities that come together in crisis. I first spoke with Laura Michel about Echoes of the Homesick Heart when I arrived in Kamloops six years ago. As I immersed myself in the history and circumstances of this region, I was struck by this play that is so close to the community from which it has emerged, capturing voices from a diversity of ages and backgrounds across the Secwépemc Nation. Laura has become a vital member of the WCT community, and her dedicated work to share the real-life stories of many Secwépemc people, in hopes of preserving the Secwépemc language, is something we are honoured to support. Kamloops was in the world’s spotlight last year as the devastating revelations about the former Kamloops Indian Residential School came to national prominence. One of the many terrible intended effects of the residential school system was the attempted eradication of Indigenous languages across many Nations throughout Canada. When the first apology for the Residential School system came from the Canadian Government in 2014, I recall speaking to an Indigenous Elder who described his time at one of the schools. When he arrived at the school, torn from his family at age 6, he was admonished by a priest for speaking his language, and told that from then on, he could only speak English—but he’d never been away from his language and culture, and as he said, “I didn’t know any other language.” The preservation of language is intrinsically tied to the preservation of culture. It is incumbent on us as artists, and as a community, to work towards a society that is not only better aware of the past and the present but is also celebratory of the diversity represented by the revitalization of Indigenous culture. Perhaps this play will help us all take a small step in that direction.

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES
LAURA MICHEL Playwright
My name is Laura Michel from Cstalen (Adams Lake). I would like to acknowledge that this premiere is being presented on the traditional unceded territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc within Secwepemcúl’ecw. Echoes of the Homesick Heart is a story of hope, survival, and overcoming the genocidal actions of the Residential School system. This play celebrates the resilience of Indigenous families, communities, and culture. First and foremost, I’d like to pay respect to the Elders and Survivors of our communities. This project would not have come to fruition without the loving and caring support of many people along the way. I would like to express endless gratitude to the participants of the interviews that were the basis for this script, whether they participated officially or anecdotally—your contributions were foundational to give me the essential tools to bring this story to the stage. I would like to acknowledge Western Canada Theatre for their unwavering belief in the legacy of this project and my vision for its development. I’d like to recognize TRU CURA (Thompson Rivers University—Community University Research Alliance), Canada Council for the Arts, and First Peoples Cultural Council for financially supporting the development phase of this script. I would like to show respect to the Elders, language speakers, and language teachers, who tirelessly strive to reclaim and revitalize our language—your dedication and perseverance without whom we would be lost. I wish to honour my Aunt, Dr Kathryn Michel, who lead the charge working with our Elders towards the creation of the Secwépemc Immersion School, Chief Atahm. I would like to show respect to the sacred knowledge of the elders that guided me and inspired me throughout this journey.

Continued from previous page My mentors Marie Clements, Valerie Planche, and Andrew Kushnir helped guide me through this playwrighting process and helped me to become a better artist and writer. I would like to recognize my Kye7es and Sle7es Anna and Joe Michel, Lucy and Les Williams, and all survivors of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, for their determination and legacy of Secwepemctsin. I would like to show deep gratitude to Sle7e Lawrence Michel for gifting the feather story in this script. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for their unending support throughout this process and indeed all my endeavors through life. This play is for my children, who carry with them the hopes and dreams of the future. Supporting the Secwépemc Voices of the Future The impact of this new play doesn’t stop with what you see on stage. Playwright Laura Michel is committed to giving back to the community and supporting Secwépemc language speakers and learners. To honour the intent of this work, Laura will be establishing a bursary program, starting in Fall 2023, to offer financial support to postsecondary students with an intent to study Secwépemc language. Stay tuned for more details on this bursary program at wctlive.ca. If you have questions or would like to learn more, please contact Laura Michel at sandrake.consulting@gmail.com. —
DIRECTOR’S NOTES In reading notes by Laura Michel, playwright of Echoes of the Homesick Heart, you will notice her abundant offers of gratitude. She thanks the organizations that have supported this project since its outset, she thanks individuals who helped bring it to fruition and, most importantly, she thanks the people whose original interviews created the foundation for the script. It is my honour to direct this play and, in so doing, offer thanks every day to Laura herself, without whom, none of this would have happened. People often assume that a new play springs fully formed from the playwright’s brain onto the page before merrily making its way onto the stage a few weeks later. They assume wrong. Context: on our second day of rehearsal, Laura told us that some of her original interview subjects who were young teenagers at the time have now started families of their own. Seven years of her life have gone into this work and, in the meantime, a new generation of future Secwépemcstin speakers has emerged. With the premiere of Echoes of the Homesick Heart, Laura Michel looks fearlessly to the future, while cradling the unspeakable trauma of the past with her words and heart. I salute her courage and compassion with these words in the Straits Salish spoken by my ancestors and, hopefully, by my own descendents: Táchel-lh le7 Kwel táchel-lh Yós-lh se7 u7 táchel. Elánnexw-lh e kw chelá7ngen le7
We were here, We are here now, We will always be here, We are listening to the ancestors
Hóy7sxwq’e to Laura, to James and WCT, for placing your trust in me. Hóy7sxwq’e to my mentors Lori Marchand and Popólxmot for their guidance. And hóy7sxwq’e to a wonderful ally and partner in dramaturgy, Andrew Kushnir. Eric Coates Director —
