Walk 4 A Cure returns

ORGANISERS are hoping to see a mass of green across the Lady Bay Resort car park on Sunday, February 16 when the ‘Walk 4 A Cure’ returns.

The Gillin Boys Foundation event is hoped to once again attract a large number of entrants.

“The more funds we can raise, the quicker we can find a cure,” organiser Christopher Gillin said.

The walk, which will start at 10am from the Lady Bay Resort car park, will move along the footpath to the Surf Club, along the beach track to the pavilion before returning to the car park.

“It’s a casual walk and people of all ages and abilities are most welcome to join us,” Christopher said.

“Entry is just $15, with children under the age of 12 free of charge.

“We’re encouraging all participants to wear a touch of green to help us create a sea of green to spread awareness of our Fight For A Cure as we walk as a group.”

At the conclusion of the walk there will be a sausage sizzle, with water also available.

“Bean Cruizin will also be there to accommodate coffee lovers and Gillin Boys Foundation merchandise will be available for purchase.”

All money raised on the day will be donated to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute to help fund its research into Duchenne.

“We will be in the Lady Bay Resort car park from 9.15am for registration, with the walk to start at 10am,” Christopher said.

“All those who preregister are encouraged to come over to our table and get their names marked off the list so we know they’ve arrived.”

Britnell questions golf club’s hefty fine

PORT Fairy Golf Club is facing fines of up to almost $120,000 after being charged with the alleged removal of protected vegetation.

According to Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell, the club received the charges on December 23 in relation to some “pulled weeds” on the community golf course.

Ms Britnell has since questioned the government’s “disproportionate behaviour” and said club members were reeling from the “heavy handed approach of the government.”

“This is a completely disproportionate response to the issue of some pulled weeds on a community golf course,” Ms Britnell said.

The matter dates to June 2023, when a Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) representative was there to negotiate the lease and photographed a pile of weeds that contained a protected species (coast bearded heath), which were removed as part of general course maintenance.

“Despite DEECA having a range of more moderate options available to them to manage this matter such as issuing an official warning or a penalty infringement notice, they have taken the action of laying criminal charges,” Ms Britnell said.

“DEECA seem to have lost all perspective.

“We have real law and order issues – such as knife attacks, stealing and criminal behaviour across the state but instead the government is focussing on some weeds on a golf course. It is poor

use of public resources.

“What are they thinking laying criminal charges just before Christmas on a country golf club?”

Ms Britnell added that she was told that there was little to no attempt by DEECA to work with the club to resolve these issues in a conciliatory manner.

The Port Fairy Golf Club board are volunteers running a community asset, for the enjoyment of the public.

They have implemented an

Environmental Management Plan (EMP) with protocols and policies to manage the mapping and identification of vegetation species on site, in particular protected species.

“They are a group of club volunteers who we would hope DEECA would support, educate and assist.”

Infrastructure grants open for farmers

WITH harvest complete across the western district, now is the time for south west farmers to apply for an on-farm drought infrastructure grant to help manage dry conditions now and into the future.

Agriculture Victoria Regional Drought Coordinator Ralph Cotter said grants of up to $5,000 are available through the On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grant program.

“The grants are mainly being used to upgrade farm water systems, install stock containment areas or to purchase grain and fodder storage infrastructure,” Mr Cotter said.

“Since opening in late October 2024, over 44 per cent of available grant funds have been committed.

“Grants can also be used for a range of other on-farm improvements, including feeding system upgrades and drought management tools such as soil moisture monitors and weather stations

“Farmers should check out the grant program guidelines for the full list of eligible infrastructure improements.”

Mr Cotter said the grant program is administered by Rural Finance on behalf of the

Victorian government. Rural Finance are available to support farmers with any questions they may have regarding the application process or eligibility.

Climate and ocean plastic in the limelight

MOYNE Shire Council will host a free screening of the film Rising Up at the Reardon Theatre in Port Fairy next Wednesday week.

The film will be followed by a Q&A session with film-maker Kal Glanznig and local environmental advocates. Rising Up explores global solutions around climate and ocean plastic, aiming to inspire and empower young people to take action.

Moyne mayor Cr Karen Foster said the annual youth survey conducted by Mission Australia highlighted that climate change and the environment was one of the top concerns for young people.

“The aim of the film was to provide a clear view of current concerns on climate and ocean plastic, along with an optimistic outlook to inspire and empower viewers to take action,” Cr Foster said.

“This screening aligns with council’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement by providing an opportunity for residents to learn about global and local responses to plastic pollution and climate change.

“The event also provides an opportunity for council to engage with the community ahead of the upcoming development of a new Environment and Sustainability Strategy. “

Cr Foster said community insights

and discussions from this screening will help inform council’s approach to future sustainability initiatives.

“Moyne Shire has a unique natural environment, from coastline to farmlands,” she said.

“This screening is a chance to reflect on how we can contribute to global solutions while protecting and preserving our local landscapes for future generations.”

A key focus of this event is also to highlight what is being done at a local level and how community members can get involved.

The panel discussion and Q&A session will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about local sustainability initiatives and explore

ways to contribute.

The session will be hosted by Kal Glanznig, with local panel members Yaraan Couzens Bundle, Colleen Hughson (Beach Patrol 3280-3284), Amelia Dumesny (Green Futures Now participant) and Ben Druitt (Fight for the Bight).

The film screening will be held o Wednesday, February 19 at the Reardon Theatre in Port Fairy.

For free tickets head to https://events. humanitix.com/rise-up-film-screeningand-panel-discussion

An Upparel recycle clothing box will be available at the screening.

Viewers are encouraged to bring any unwanted clothing, linen, shoes or hats for reuse or recycling.

Busy day at Repair Cafe

MORE than 40 kilograms of household items were repaired (and saved from landfill) at last Saturday’s Warrnambool Repair Café event.

The first event for 2025 once again proved a huge success for the repair café volunteers and visitors.

Dozens of household items were brought in to the café to be repaired or fixed by volunteers.

This included a vast array of jewellery, clothing, electrical items and others.

One of the items included a double pram with a broken folding mechanism which had rendered the pram useless.

However, volunteer ‘Bill’ took the item apart and identified the broken piece.

Volunteer ‘Gerard’ used his 3D printer to fabricate the broken part and the pram now has a new lease of life – and one very happy owner.

Other items repaired last weekend included a pair of tracksuit pants that needed hemming, a padded bicycle seat that needed stitching, re-linking two bracelets and necklace, mending a cardigan, shirt and school uniform, and fixing the handbrake on a child’s buggy.

The café area was also buzzing, with ‘Jennifer’ providing guidance to three

young volunteers, Sadie, Shamsa and Stevie.

The dynamic team were serving hot tea, coffee, cake and biscuits to visitors and volunteers throughout the morning.

Warrnambool Repair Cafe will host events on the first Saturday of the month throughout 2025, with the next event scheduled for Saturday, March 1.

The repair café can be found at the new West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House facility in Pectan Avenue.

Crowds enjoy some rare exhibits

THE Wannon Rooms at the Warrnambool Showgrounds was home to a range of interesting collectables last weekend.

The South West Region Bottle and Collectable Club’s ‘Bottle and Collectables Show’ attracted strong crowds over the weekend.

According to Bruce Lowenthal, the twoday event was a “huge success” with exhibitors travelling from far and wide to take part.

“We were extremely pleased with both the attendance numbers and the exhibitor numbers on the weekend and from all feedback received so far, everyone had a great time,” Mr Lowenthal said.

“There was some wonderful exhibits, including a magnificent display of Queen Victoria items which dated back to about the early 1840s and that was judged the best collectable display of the show.

“We also had some miniature tools which are very rare to see, and a Robur Tea display which included a ‘perfect teapot’ which was popular among visitors.”

Organisers are hoping to hold the event once again next year and are encouraging everyone, particularly the younger generation, to start their own collections.

“We strongly encourage young people to start up their own collection of things that interest them.

“Because we don’t want to lose these collections; they are all very interesting and deserve to be kept and shared.”

Visitors to last weekend’s event travelled from far and wide, with exhibitors from South Australia, New South Wales, Melbourne, Ballarat and further afield.

Don’t miss Concert on the Hill

ALL roads lead to the St Brigids Church hall on Sunday, February 16 for a very special afternoon musical matinee.

‘Concert on the Hill’ will feature a vast array of talented artists with music to suit all tastes and ages.

Mel and Trevor McKenzie, Triptych, Harpistry, Demby McKenzie and friends (supported by Martin Sullivan), will all feature throughout the afternoon.

Triptych includes Jo, Jenelle and Carli, three musical women from the Port Fairy district. With a love of harmonies, these girls weave their voices together to take audiences on a beautiful acapella journey.

A mutual love of all things harp, plus some chance meetings at The Lake School Of Celtic music, led to the beginning of this musical collaboration (Harpistry) in 2019.

Their music radiates folk melodies, original and contemporary compositions.

They recently released their first studio recording on CD, and are excited to perform in the beautiful acoustics of Crossley Church.

Harpistry comprises multi-instrumentalists Pam Bennett, Sylvie Rogers and Merran Moir.

Originally from Camperdown, Demby McKenzie is a music theatre graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts, specialising in a range of vocal styles from Music Theatre, Jazz, Classical Crossover, Celtic, Rock ‘n’ Roll & Gospel.

Demby is a co-founder of local production company “Serenata”, who most recently staged its second annual concert “Dreams” in Warrnambool, and more recently produced “Demby McKenzie and Friends” at the Theatre Royal Camperdown.

Joining Demby will be fellow founder of “Serenata”, James Philpot (piano) and guest performer Sarah Lim.

James is soon to start a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Interactive Composition) at the Victorian College of the Arts and Conservatorium.

Sarah is in the midst of planning and music directing yet another Serenata production - a Celtic Concert raising funds for a mission trip to Guatemala, set to show in April 2025.

St Brigids Church can be found at 212 Koroit-Port Fairy Road, Crossley. Bookings for the concert can be made on try booking.

Admission is just $25 per person which includes afternoon tea. The concert will run from 2pm until 4.30pm.

Improving access to the beach

WORK on the second stage of the new accessible beach access ramp at McGennans carpark began this week, and is expected to be finished by June.

Following the completion of works late last year to re-establish the dune profile after sections had become eroded over time, the second stage involves the installation of the ramp and staircase.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Blain said that the upgrade would improve access to the beach for people with a range of mobility issues.

“There are lots of people who struggle with stairs for all sorts of reasons, and that’s why an accessible beach access point was identified as a priority in our Beach Access Strategy,” Cr Blain said.

“In addition to re-establishing beach access at a site that has been closed for a few years because the existing stairs were no longer safe, this location was chosen for an all-abilities ramp because it is close to the disabled carparks in McGennans carpark and the new accessible amenities block.”

“The new ramp and stairs are designed to cope with rough ocean conditions and feature footings which go up to six metres below the beach surface,” he said.

“The structure itself is built of long-lasting materials including marine-grade stainless steel and fibre-reinforced plastic.

“And another boost is that sections of the timber decking leading to the access point, which are only about five years old, have been salvaged and will be used in other projects.”

BIG IMPACT!

Cr Blain said that the ramp and stairs would be built to endure the often harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean.

This $518,000 (ex GST) project is funded by the Warrnambool City Council and the Victorian Government via the Coastal Public Access and Risk Grants program.

Scoreboard unveiled

NORTHERN Raiders Cricket Club has officially unveiled its new electronic scoreboard.

While the scoreboard has been in use throughout the current 2024/25 season, last weekend marked the official opening of the device at the Raiders’ home ground at Purnim Recreation Reserve.

“The electronic scoreboard, at the Rodger Henderson Oval, has been well utilised this season and has been three years in the making,” club secretary Peter McDonald said.

Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, was invited to take part in the official opening.

The day also marked the 400th club game for stalwart Jeshua Ross in the division three clash with Merrivale.

Other guests to enjoy last Saturday’s celebrations included Member for Western Victoria Bev McArthur, Moyne Shire Cr Jim Doukas and Cr Myra Murrihy.

“This project isn’t just for cricket, it will also benefit the broader community,” Mr McDonald said.

“Grassmere Primary School already conducts its annual sports carnival utilising both Henderson and McDonald ovals and during the next summer holidays we intend to stage a family movie night.

“The screen is trailer-mounted for the flexibility of being moved from within both ovals, with consideration for potential outside usage.”

Birds of a feather...

THERE was plenty to chirp about at the Warrnambool Table Tennis Centre last weekend.

The centre, on Cramer Street, played host to the South West Budgerigar Society’s ‘Budgies in the Bool’ event.

According to organiser Ray Slade, the weekend attracted a large number of birds and visitors, some travelling from Melbourne and interstate.

Local children were invited to take along their feathered friends and find out who has the best pet budgie in Warrnambool.

Prizes were awarded for the chirpiest chatterbox, prettiest bird in town, friendliest budgie, sweetheart pair (budgie and owner) and best decorated cage.

Free face painting added to Saturday morning’s colourful activities for children while in the afternoon more than 268 entries were received for the show.

“The Budgerigar Society’s annual show on Saturday afternoon once again attracted some wonderful entries and we were thrilled with how the weekend went,” Mr Slade said.

“The activities concluded on Sunday with the auction of around 114 birds which was also livestreamed.”

Riders test their skills in the arena

RIDERS of all ages were able to show their show jumping prowess in Warrnambool last weekend.

The annual Shipwreck Coast Show Jumping two-day event attracted almost 180 entries to the showgrounds.

Event organiser Rod Andrews said the event was one of the best he had

been involved with in recent years.

“We were absolutely stoked with the number and quality of entries; it was honestly one of the best I’ve seen,” Mr Andrews said.

“We ran two rings on both days; the first was for seniors 80cm-135cm while the second ring was for junior riders, 30cm-80cm.

“It was terrific to be able to give some of the younger riders experience on a show jumping course; some of the riders were just three to five year-olds which was amazing.

“From all feedback received, everyone was happy with how the two days went and we’re already looking for sponsors for next year’s event.”

Port Fairy and Northern Raiders solidify their positions

PORT Fairy and Northern Raiders drew closer to the top of the table in the Sungold Premier Cricket over the weekend, while North Warrnambool earned their first win.

Round seven saw the Raiders make short work of Warrnambool after a dominant first innings of 8/277.

Jacob Fishwick top scored for Northern with a dominant 109 runs featuring 17 boundaries, while Jack Burnham (54), Ranil Rasanga (39no) and Tim Bryce (33) all made solid contributions.

Jason Greer was best for Warrnambool taking an impressive five wickets despite surrendering 64 on 14 overs as none of the bowlers could find economical stints.

Warrnambool showed fight with the bat in hand, however, putting up a feisty 10/117 despite the loss of opener Ryan Mottram after just three balls.

Zavier Mungean proved best for Warrnambool, top scoring with 26 runs.

Raiders captain James Elford proved strong with the ball, taking five wickets from 24.2 overs while giving up only 32 runs.

Jake Louth also grabbed a triple, giving up 24 runs from 18 overs.

The Raiders sent Warrnambool back in to bat, who reached 1/43 before stumps giving the Northern Raiders the win.

Port Fairy earned the win over AllansfordPanmure after both teams pushed the game to

its limits, with each batting a full 80 overs.

Allansford-Panmure won the toss and elected to bat, holding firm to finish their innings 9/242 thanks to strong showing from Shashan Silva (25), Daniel Meade (60), Patrick Mahony (77) and Shiv Kumara (29no).

Praveen Dilanka took a game-high six wickets, surrendering 28 runs off 17 overs while Henry Bensch and Vincent Huf added one apiece.

Port Fairy were sent in to bat and saw strong consistency across the board, with six batters reaching at least 28 runs.

An opening partnership of 48 positioned the home side well before a three-wicket collapse between the 33rd and 34th over on 85 runs cast doubt on the stability of the chase, but the middle and tail of the order stood tall with Aaron Williams adding 30, Praveen Dilanka adding 37 and Huf finishing top score on 51no from 45 deliveries, including four boundaries and a pair of sixes.

Shiv Kumara proved best with the ball, taking three wickets from 29 overs with 70 runs surrendered.

Reid Oval was home to a tightly fought contest between Nestles and Merrivale.

Merrivale won the toss and sent Nestles in to bat, who struggled to find form outside a solid showing from Sunjaya Chathuranga Illeperuma Arachige (30) and Michael Harricks (28no).

Joshua Stapleton was best for Merrivale with the ball, finishing 4/31 from 19 overs while Mark Jones grabbed a trio of wickets from 15 overs,

surrendering 32 and Matt Petherick finishes 2/27 from 9.3.

Merrivale took a slight edge at the conclusion of each side’s first innings, notching 10/115 thanks to Mark Jones hitting 35 and Theo Opperman’s 27.

Nestles enjoyed a strong showing from Robert Saker at 4/19 from 12 overs while Jacob Hetherington, Max Hannah and Sunjaya Chathuranga Illeperuma Arachige all claimed two scalps.

Nestles started their second innings slow with Mark Murphy falling for nought but five of the next six batters reaching double figures, headlined by 40 from the skipper Hetherington, positioned the side’s increase to 10/131.

Merrivale managed to race out to 1/22 with just three overs in their second innings, but it wasn’t enough to clinch the win.

North Warrnambool acquitted themselves well at home against Mortlake, winning the toss and electing to bat before racing out to a 206 first innings.

Bailey Jenkinson top scored with 79 while Liam Burgess added 42 and Alex Lean contributed 33.

Hamish Hobbs (3/37 from 13) and Todd Robertson (3/39 from 10.2) were the best for Mortlake with the ball, but Warrnambool’s dominance with the bat would continue with the ball.

Mortlake fell for 10/75 with just two batters reaching double figures, with Corey Rounds

finishing top score on 23. Hank Schlaghecke was best for Norths, bowling 5/28 from 15 overs.

Mortlake followed on to an improved 4/74 at stumps but the home side earned a comfortable win, with Liam Burgess posting the best second innings figures at 2/11 from seven overs. Russell’s Creek also earned a win, with a strong showing against West Warrnambool. West won the toss and chose to bat, racing away to 10/224 thanks to a top score of 56 from skipper Ben Threlfall, in addition to 45 from Joe Nyikos and 31 from Ryan Lucas.

Craig Britten was best for Russells Creek, taking five wickets from 19.4 overs with 56 runs surrendered.

Heshan De Silva was close behind at 4/59 from 25 overs, while Noah Best also added a wicket.

With the bat in their hands, Russells Creek made a comfortable 10/233 with Rukshan Weerasinghe top scoring on 43, vice-captain Craig Britten close behind on 41 and Blake Evans on 34.

Roshane Fernando claimed the most wickets for West Warrnambool at 3/43 from 13 overs while Brock Gannon (2/19) and Edward Taylor (2/45).

West Warrnambool came out to a thunderous second innings, tallying 2/71 from just nine overs thanks to seven boundaries and three sixes as Joe Douglas top scored with 34, but Russells Creek were declared winners at stumps.

Victories help championship sides secure top four spots

THE Moyne Shire Division One Championship saw AllansfordPanmure, Merrivale and Koroit all record strong victories over the weekend.

Allansford-Panmure won the toss on home soil and elected to open proceedings with the bat in hand.

The Gators got off to a fast start, finishing their first innings 9/290 thanks to contributions from Declan Bourke (30), Lachlan Rea (85), Shaun Griffin (31) and Mack Mills (61).

Warrnambool’s Nicholas Frith claimed the most wickets with 3/55 from 19 overs, followed by Bishan Karunarathne with 2/48 from 13 and Dinusha Jayasinghe 2/34 from 15.

Warrnambool’s chance at the crease proved less than ideal after all wickets fell for just 56 runs – with only Seth Wallace (13) and Jason Mungean (11) reaching double figures.

Allansford-Panmure’s Josh Parsons boasted a five-wicket haul, surrendering just 22 runs from 10 overs, while Mills, Charlie James and

James Mulheron all took a wicket while giving up six or fewer runs.

Electing to enforce the follow-on, Warrnambool returned to the crease but lost the first four wickets to Daniel Ryan inside 10 overs before falling 6-100 as the Gators cruised to victory.

Merrivale also earned a win on home soil, defeating Mortlake’s Championship side with nine wickets to spare.

Mortlake won the toss and elected to bat but fell after less than 35 overs having collected only 53 runs, with just one player recording double digit runs.

Marcus Bunney was the man to blame after taking an incredible eight wickets with only 19 runs surrendered from 17.3 overs.

Despite the strong bowling performance, Merrivale themselves struggled with the bat as the wickets fell for just 87, with Nicholas Sinnott and Bunney himself top scoring with 14 runs apiece.

But Mortlake could not find form during their second innings.

Merrivale made short work of the chase in

their second innings, with Sinnott (21no) and Rhys Wallace (12no) steering Merrivale to victory.

Meanwhile, Koroit hit the road to take on Nirranda at Port Campbell.

Koroit won the toss and sent the Titans in to bat, who performed strongly to jump out to 10/101 with contributions from Brendan McMahon (23), Christopher Haberfield (19) and Ben Oates (14no).

Koroit’s Joshua Campbell proved a nightmare for Nirranda’s batters, posting results of 5/21 from 14 overs in addition to Noah Billings (3/22 from nine) and Patrick Brady (2/25 from 15).

Koroit’s turn at the crease started in red hot form with a 98-run partnership from Patrick Sinnott and Lachlan Rooke before the fall of Rooke’s wicket on 60.

But Nirranda wrestled back control as the remainder of the batters fell having added only a further 52 runs, finishing 10/150.

Jarryd Walsh performed best with the ball in hand, claiming four wickets while giving up 35 runs through 14 overs while Nelson

Reason took two wickets from just four overs, surrendering 19 runs.

Samuel Haberfield, Bruce Alexander and Jhyce Bartlett rounded out the wicket takers. In their second innings at bat, Nirranda was unable to replicate the success of its first innings – losing a wicket before earning a run. McMahon (19) and Haberfield (16) steadied for a partnership of 33 before losing two further batters without adding to the total. Nirranda ended its innings 10/79 with Campbell again proving strong with the ball in hand – claiming four wickets while giving up only 16 runs on 13 overs.

Kurt Howard also performed well, taking a trio of wickets with 13 runs from his nine overs.

Koroit only needed 11 overs in its second innings to chase down the Titans’ total, despite losing three wickets on its way to victory with seven wickets to spare.

Each of the three victors secured spots in the top four with the Gators, Merrivale and Koroit respectively trailing only Noorat Terang at the top of the table.

Melb to Warrnie this weekend

THIS weekend will see the running of the 109th edition of Australia’s greatest one day cycling classic – and the ‘Warrny’ will celebrate its 130th year.

Cycling enthusiasts and race fans of all ages are expected to once again converge on the streets of Warrnambool to cheer along their favourite riders.

The South West TAFE Port Campbell to Warrnambool Handicap is expected to arrive in Warrnambool from noon, while the Powercor Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic will hit the streets of Warrnambool from 1.15pm.

On Sunday Australia’s best female cyclists will battle it out in the Lochard Energy Warrnambool Women’s Cycling Classic.

Warrnambool residents can expect road closures from Hopkins Bridge and Raglan Parage.

To coincide with these events, a range of fun activities have been planned for the ‘event village’ on Raglan Parade –offering fun for children on both days.

The ‘event village’ will open at 11.30am Saturday.

The Powercor Air Bucket will lift spectators high above the event village while the Powercor basketball ring will give participants the chance to win a basketball by making two from three shots.

The Noodledoof bar will be open along with a barbecue, ice creams and coffees. Watch the action on the giant screen or take along a picnic rug.

From 12 noon all the action of the race will be shown on the big screen – and watch as the South West TAFE Port Campbell Handicap battle it out on Raglan Parade.

Riders in the Powercor Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic are expected to cross the finish line from 1.30pm onwards and at 6pm the 3YBFM Legends of Cycling Dinner will feature interviews with new inductee Warrny legend Terry Stacey and former pro and PSL founder Matt Wilson.

On Sunday the event village will open at 11am - four Lochard Energy bike blenders will let spectators ride a bike while making a free smoothie.

Lochard Energy are shouting the crowd free ice creams and free coffees, as well as face painting for the kids!

Again, from 12noon, all the cycling action will be shown on the big screen and from 1.30pm riders in the Lochard Energy Warrnambool Women’s Cycling Classic are expected to cross the finish line.
