Free entry to Flagstaff for locals

WARRNAMBOOL

residents will have free entry to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village under a new program designed to foster stronger engagement with the local community.

“Through the Flagstaff Hill Ambassador Program we’ll strengthen the connection between Flagstaff Hill and local residents and build a sense of ownership and pride,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said.

“The ambassador program encourages local people to be advocates for Flagstaff Hill.

“Our ambassadors can visit any time and if they have friends or relatives who have paid for tickets to Flaggy, the ambassadors can accompany them for free.

“We know the friends and relatives category in our visitor economy accounts for a third of Warrnambool’s domestic visitors so the ambassador program creates a great opportunity to enjoy a shared experience.”

According to Cr Blain, a visit to Flagstaff Hill remains highly regarded by visitors and the council consistently sees positive reviews on platforms such as Trip Advisor and Google Reviews.

“The ambassador program means Flagstaff Hill can be a great meeting place for social clubs and parent groups,” Cr Blain said.

“The entry is free for locals but if people would like to make use of the tearooms or have other catering requirements give the Flagstaff Hill team a call and

they’ll help with any necessary arrangements.

“To get involved, go to flagstaffhill.com where we have the terms and conditions along with an easy online process to register to become an ambassador.”

The program will use postcodes to identify locals

and the application requires a driver’s licence or other suitable identification accompanied by a utility bill.

Local post codes included are Warrnambool 3280, Bushfield 3281, Dennington 3280, Allansford 3277, Illowa 3282, Woodford 3281 and Yangery 3283.

Locals can now enjoy free entry to Flagstaff Hill. 2025D

Warm weather attracts young surfers

THE sun was shining and enthusiasm was high among participants at last weekend’s Surf School in Warrnambool.

The Warrnambool ‘Surf Grom’ program continues to attract youngsters to the beach, keen to learn how to surf and stay safe in the water this summer.

Under the watchful eye of experienced surf coaches, children between the ages of five and 12 can not only learn how to surf but can also learn basic beach safety skills such as surf survival and rescue tactics, basic first aid and different beach surf conditions.

With an emphasis on enjoyment and involvement, the program uses groupbased games to teach kids the fundamentals of surfing while ensuring they have a great time.

Rosie, April and Lenny Kelly were keen to go surfing last weekend under the watchful eye of coach, Neil Kelly. 2025D

The Southern Right Creative Festival will again feature more than 200 quilts this weekend.

Quilt show on now

WITH over 200 quilts on display, this weekend’s Southern Right Creative Festival is sure to be a popular attraction for locals and town visitors.

The festival has a long and colourful history which dates back to 2011.

In 2011 it began as the Southern Right Quilt Show to raise funds for Peter’s Project (to help establish an integrated cancer care centre in the south-west).

Between 2011 and 2017 the committee raised in excess of $65,000 and developed a reputation for its high quality displays.

Warrnambool Food Share, WRAD, Diabetes Resource Centre, Hospice in the Home, and the Francis Foundation have all benefited from past shows.

While the name may have changed in recent years, the majority of the show remains quilt-orientated; continuing the tradition of over 200 quilts on display, varying from beginner to advanced levels.

Visitors to this weekend’s festival can once again seek inspiration to create, or simply enjoy a wonderful shopping experience.

In 2019 the direction of the show was broadened and it was renamed the Southern Right Creation Festival, raising funds for a variety of community groups and causes.

The show will again be supported by various craft-related shops from across south-west Victoria, South Australia and Melbourne.

The show will run from today (Friday) through until Sunday, with doors open from 10am-4pm daily.

A small entry fee applies.

Free guided walk through botanic gardens

GARDEN enthusiasts of all ages can take advantage of a free guided walk through the heritage-listed Warrnambool Botanic Gardens.

The walk, next Thursday January 16, will be led by curator John Sheely and is an initiative of the Friends of Warrnambool Botanic Gardens (FOWBG).

“This is a unique opportunity for all those who would love to know more details about the plants, trees and built features of the gardens,” FOWBG committee member Penny Irons said.

“John is familiar with every square metre of the gardens and although the gardens are more than 150 years old, he is just the sixth curator and is about to begin his 19th year in the role.

“For those interested in coming along, we’ll meet at 10am at the Rotunda and the 45-minute walk will proceed regardless of the weather.

“Whether you’re a visitor to Warrnambool or a resident you’ll learn something new and gain a deeper appreciation of the role that botanic gardens play in a city.”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the gardens were a stunning community asset that were constantly evolving while retaining key heritage features.

“In recent years we’ve seen the addition of the Nature-based Play Space, new garden beds and the restoration of paths which improves access for everyone,” Cr Blain said.

“Whether you’re a regular visitor to the gardens or you’ve never been, I encourage you to take the opportunity to be a part of the guided walk.”

Community digs deep for others

CHRISTMAS was that little bit brighter for many families and young children across the district at Christmas thanks to the generosity of local shoppers.

In the true spirit of the festive season, Warrnambool locals and visitors to the town dug deep and donated just over seven trolley loads of toys and gifts for

families in need.

“It was absolutely amazing to see the generosity of shoppers and visitors to the centre,” Gateway Plaza manager Sarah Porter said.

Having teamed up with local organisation, MacKillop Family Services, last month’s Christmas Gift Appeal encouraged shoppers to take a tag from the Christmas tree in the Plaza and purchase an ageappropriate gift before leaving both at

centre management.

“The toys and gifts were just lovely,” Ms Porter said.

“Thanks to the generosity of the community, Christmas was special for many children and families who otherwise may have gone without.”

MacKillop Family Services in Warrnambool currently has up to 100 children in foster care at any given night throughout the year.

Spamalot marks 40 years of Holiday Actors

WARRNAMBOOL-based youth musical theatre group, Holiday Actors, is celebrating its 40th anniversary by bringing laughter to the stage.

The talented young cast is currently performing Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’ at the Lighthouse Theatre with the three remaining shows set for tonight (Friday) at 7.30pm and tomorrow at 1pm and 7.30pm.

Audiences should prepare to laugh out loud as the talented cast bring to life this hilariously epic production.

Adapted from the cult classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, ‘Spamalot’ reinvents the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table with a decidedly comedic twist.

Expect show-stopping musical numbers, eccentric characters, and the brand of irreverent humor that made Monty Python a worldwide phenomenon.

From killer rabbits to French taunters, to knights who spontaneously break into dance, ‘Spamalot’ has something for everyone (including jokes that will tickle both seasoned Monty Python fans and newcomers).

Leading the charge (and possibly galloping without a horse) is Mortlake’s Taine De Manser as King Arthur.

He is joined by Ruby Nelson as the everloyal Patsy, and Taz Reuel as the glamourous, scene-stealing Lady of the Lake.

This talented young cast is supported by an exceptional creative team, including director Riley Holcombe, assistant director Neil Phipps, vocal director Maja Pearson, choreographer Holly Allgood, assistant choreographer Alicia Linsley and musical director Beau Nieuwveld.

Together, they’re crafting a production that’s brimming with laughter, colour and unbridled fun.

Holiday Actors has been a staple of Warrnambool’s cultural life since 1985 and this milestone anniversary is as much about the community as it is about the company’s enduring passion for musical theatre.

“We wanted to choose a show that celebrates the joy of theatre and brings people together,” director Riley Holcombe said.

“And nothing does that better than Monty Python.”

Following the medieval mayhem of ‘Spamalot’, Holiday Actors will take audiences on another unforgettable journey with their May 2025 production of ‘Come From Away.’

This moving and inspiring musical will showcase the diversity of the company’s repertoire, proving their ability to deliver both comedy gold and heartfelt storytelling.

For tickets contact the Lighthouse Theatre ticket office on 5559 4999 or visit the theatre website.

Mum warns to spot drowning signs

A MUM whose toddler almost drowned last summer is urging parents to learn the signs of drowning and know what to do in an emergency.

Chloe Freeman and her sister-in-law had taken their five children to the beach at the end of 2023.

“We were setting up a sun tent for the kids when I turned around to do a head count,” Chloe said.

“I remember scanning the children, counting them one by one, and then I noticed a child face down in the water.

“At first, I thought it was another child swimming, but then I quickly realised it was my son, Lewis – I saw his body floating like a starfish.”

Chloe instantly knew her three-year-old was in trouble and raced straight into the water.

“I noticed he was trying to lift his head, though it was a very small movement,” she said.

“I ran into the water fully dressed, not knowing whether he would be alive or if it was too late. I was met by a man who helped me lift Lewy out of the water.”

“I was patting Lewy’s back to clear the water from his mouth and he was making some sort of whooping sounds, so he didn’t need resuscitation.”

Chloe’s sister-in-law called Triple Zero (000) and paramedics Nicole Becker and Melissa Kelly soon arrived.

“Lewy was hypothermic in my arms, eyes closed, shallow breathing,” Chloe said.

“In the ambulance, it took some time to stabilise Lewy’s oxygen levels before we headed to hospital.”

Lewis spent most of the day in hospital for observation but didn’t require any further treatment and was discharged that night.

“Now, just over 12 months on, Lewy is completely fine, but he is wary around water,”

Chloe said.

Chloe is a qualified Austswim swim teacher, has previously been a lifeguard and currently works as a primary school teacher.

She said what happened shows that accidents in the water can happen to anyone.

“Just because a child has had swimming lessons or because you have experience around water, doesn’t mean you’re immune to accidents,” she said.

“The key message is to remain aware of the dangers that surround your kids in the water.

“I don’t feel we were doing anything wrong, we weren’t distracted by our phones or anything like that – we were simply trying to protect our children from the sun by setting up the sunshade.”

Chloe said her message to other families is to know what drowning looks like so they can recognise the signs when it’s happening.

“Also, learn CPR – you never know when you might need to perform it,” she said.

“It’s crucial to be prepared and don’t underestimate the importance of water safety education.

“In that moment, if I had looked out and thought, ‘a child is just swimming or playing’ and had ignored the signs, Lewy would have drowned. It’s that simple.”

Ambulance Victoria Director Emergency Management Dale Armstrong said the neardrowning was a reminder to all parents to be vigilant this summer.

“Children drowning often occurs silently and without warning after accidental falls, with children aged under four most at risk,” Mr Armstrong said.

“Always supervise children near water and learn CPR, in case of an emergency.

“Read the signs around waterways to familiarise yourself with the dangers and, where possible, swim between the flags at Life Saving Victoria patrolled waterways.”

Offshore Project Proposal (OPP) now open for public comment

Amplitude Energy Ltd (formerly Cooper Energy Ltd) operates the Casino gas field which has supplied natural gas to Australians since 2006. As production from this field declines, the activities proposed under our OPP will ensure continued supply of natural gas to southeastern Australia from our existing permit areas. By using our existing infrastructure, we can minimise the environmental footprint of the development while meeting the region's energy needs.

East Coast Supply Project – Offshore Peterborough Vic, Otway Basin

The OPP covers a range of activities, including geophysical and geotechnical surveys (excluding seismic), drilling and completing production wells, and connecting these wells into existing pipeline networks. It also provides for ongoing operations, such as inspections, maintenance and repair work, and decommissioning.

The public comment process

NOPSEMA has published our draft OPP on its website for public comment. The time available for public comment and details of NOPSEMA’s process can be found on the following link or via the QR code.

Hundreds tackle Surf T Surf

CLEAR skies and cooler weather made for near-perfect conditions for almost 800 entrants in this year’s Surf T Surf in Warrnambool.

Last weekend’s event saw an incredible 348 runners tackle the 10 kilometre course, while a further 170 entered the six kilometre run.

The six kilometre walk attracted a field of 73 entrants while close to 175

participants enjoyed the three kilometre ‘lap of the lake’ course.

What initially began as an idea from a group of local footballers has since grown to one of the biggest community run/walk events in the district – much to the delight of organisers.

The 10km course takes runners all around the heart of the city, giving participants the chance to run down the centre of Liebig Street and surrounds.

THE East Framlingham Golf Course proved challenging for players in the first round of the Corangamite Veterans Golfers Association 2025 competition earlier this month.

Forty-four players contested the January 6 event on what was a challenging but well-prepared course.

Street stocks, SPRINTcars ~ speedweek

McHugh seals the deal

IN front of a huge crowd at Premier Speedway on New Year’s Day, Australian champion Lockie McHugh secured the 2024/25 Brandt Sprintcar Speedweek title.

With a fourth-placed finish in the 35 lap A-Main, McHugh ended his Speedweek campaign with a top five finish in all five events (including two wins, a fifth, a second and a fourth).

But it was Warrnambool local Jamie Veal’s time to shine at the Bool on January 1, taking the chequered flag in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Premier for the fifth and final round of Sprintcar Speedweek.

In what was a night of thrills and spills, Veal raced his new Maxim chassis across the line, leading home impressive newcomer Jordan Rae in second and Missouri’s Garet Williamson third.

Veal was forced to bolt a new Maxim together after destroying a car in the A-Main at Avalon.

He came from the second row of the grid in what was an impressive display of driving to take the flag.

The top 10 finishes in the A-Main were: Veal, Rae, Williamson, McHugh, Marcus Dumesny, Ryan Jones, Jack Lee, Brendan Quinn, Brendan Guerin and Jordyn Charge.

Super Sunday at Premier

KALEB Currie has taken out the final round of Pro Speedcar Week, taking the chequered flag at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway last weekend.

While crowd numbers may have been down a little, those who spent last Sunday night trackside were treated to some great racing.

With over 100 cars competing across various divisions, the fields contained a host of interstate drivers who were keen to do battle against the Victorians, with series finals for both the Speedcars and Wingless Sprints on the program.

Sunday’s Pro Speedcar Week round saw Currie take the win ahead of second-placed Dylan Menz with Luke Storer finishing third.

Wingless Sprints Summer Slam Series round results saw Tyson Martin take the win on Sunday, followed by Kirby Hillyer in second and Ryan Furler third.

Super Sedans driver Brock Atkins also took the win in his division, with Trent Wilson second and Callum Harper third.

Action will return to the Premier Speedway track on Sunday, January 19 for the ARB Warrnambool International Sprintcar Carnival.

Hampden announces junior netball coaches

HAMPDEN Football Netball League has announced its junior Association Championship netball coaches for 2025.

The league will participate in the Western Zone Association Championship qualifiers in Warrnambool on June 1 before moving onto the state titles on June 29.

Experienced Koroit Open coach

Danielle McInerney will head the under 17 squad once again, after leading them to

a semi-final berth at the 2024 state titles.

The under 15 squad will be guided by North Warrnambool open coach

Maddison Vardy, who enters the role with an extensive coaching background in both junior and senior programs.

Experienced mentors Leah Kermeen and Josie Ellerton will be the co-coaches of the under 15 reserves squad.

Koroit legend Kate Dobson has been appointed the under 13 coach for the second successive year and will be assisted by Marie-Clare Smedts.

Dobson and Smedts have worked with one another at the Koroit Saints for the past few seasons and have built a strong coaching relationship.

Hamilton Kangaroos mentor Nat O’Dea will also be involved in the HFNL Associations Championships program for a consecutive year, re-appointed as under 13 reserves coach.

She will be assisted by Lianna Harrison.

HFNL head of netball Dot Jenkins said the league was absolutely thrilled that several of its club coaches had put up

their hands to support the players for the 2025 campaign.

“The leagues’ strength is enhanced by the club coaches, and we value the time and commitment our coaches give to the association championships,” Jenkins said.

“Having proficient netball coaches with a deep understanding of the game’s rules, techniques and tactics enhances the development of the players.”

The HFNL Open coach will be announced sometime this month.

The B2-Main of the wingless sprints saw Q79 Bryce Bayfield come to grief on lap three, ending his night at Premier.
