SOME visitors to the district were left wondering what weather conditions lay ahead of them last weekend after looking to the skies.

Social media pages were filled with photos of the grey/white coloured sky, as ‘clouds’ rolled in across several parts of the district.

Amid much talk and speculation, the general consensus among locals was that it was another ‘sea mist’ occurrence.

Orford rally this weekend

WITH warm weather predicted this weekend, organisers are hoping big crowds will flock to Orford for the town’s annual vintage rally.

When it comes to all things vintage, the rally has become renowned across the district and beyond for its interesting display of engines, tractors, trucks, cars, motorcycles, tools, machinery and collectables.

According to organiser David Bartlett and his team of volunteers, this year’s event – to be staged tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday – looks set to once again be a crowd pleaser.

“The Orford Vintage Rally has earned a reputation for its extensive exhibits and attractions,” David said.

“We really do have something for everyone; whether

you’re interested in old tractors and machinery or beaut utes you’ll find it here.”

Blade shearing was first introduced to the rally last year and was such a success that it will again feature on this weekend’s program.

“There’s something about blade shearing that’s fascinating and people will have the chance at various times over the weekend to watch the experts in action and perhaps also have a try themselves,” David said.

Another feature will be an interesting range of vintage tillage machinery.

This will include a “plough from the turn of the century”, an old diverter plough, spud scufflers and old horrows.

A model boat pond has also been set up and will no doubt cause great interest, and members of the Hamilton Re-enactment Society will keep visitors

entertained as they re-create the history, customs and fighting techniques of the Medieval period with demonstrations from around 10am each day.

Last year the event attracted a crowd of more than 1000 and organisers are hopeful to see just as many this weekend.

“The weather is looking fine and this setting here at Orford is magnificent and many people comment on it while they’re here. It’s a beautiful, peaceful bush setting and the perfect location for a vintage rally.”

A small entry fee is charged for adults (with those under 16 admitted free) and catering will be provided on-site.

Due to limited internet reception in the area, the event is strictly cash only.

Gates open around 9am both days.

David Bartlett and his team of volunteers are looking forward to this weekend’s Orford Vintage Rally.

Emergency relief for those in need

WITH so many people doing it tough recently, a band of volunteers at Anglicare’s dropin centre are working hard to make life that little bit easier.

For those who are struggling to make ends meet, who are homeless or in search of a home, or those who simply need a warm place to spend a few hours and have a bite to eat, the centre’s doors are open.

“Anglicare is a state-wide organisation that supports families and individuals in need of some assistance,” Ballarat manager Kim Boyd said.

“Our food relief centre is open every weekday, except Thursday, from 10am until 12 noon.

“People with a health care card are most welcome to come in for food assistance, no appointment is needed. We can have anywhere between two and 13 people each day, with an average of around half a dozen visitors.”

The drop-in centre at Anglicare is also open during those times, with volunteers serving up toasted sandwiches and a hot cuppa.

Volunteer Ken Sharp said he enjoys time spent in the kitchen and with centre visitors.

“It’s wonderful to be able to give back to the community like this, and to know that the little bit you are doing can mean a lot to someone else,” Mr Sharp said.

“I enjoy having a chat with visitors and they also seem to like the companionship – and who doesn’t enjoy a ham and cheese toastie?”

Along with a hot cuppa and a snack, Ms

Boyd said the centre also has showers available and a pool table for use.

“Some people drop in for something to eat and a hot shower,” she said.

“We provide towels and toiletries and for those sleeping rough, whether they are couch surfing, having short-term stays or homeless this is a safe and welcoming environment.

“We can also refer people on to other agencies, such as Brophy, for additional assistance.”

The drop-in centre at Anglicare Warrnambool has been running for several years and relies on volunteers to continue its operation.

Ms Boyd said anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is most welcome to call in during opening hours and leave their contact details.

“You can never have too many volunteers,” she said.

“They are always welcome here and very much appreciated.”

Have your say at a listening post

WARRNAMBOOL council is urging residents to get involved in developing the next Council Plan and budget.

Listening posts will be held in Warrnambool today and West Warrnambool next week, giving residents the opportunity to voice their thoughts.

“We’re coming to you this year,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said.

“We’ve scheduled listening posts across the municipality and they’ll start in the late afternoon and extend into the early evening so people have an opportunity to drop in after they’ve finished work.

“We really want to hear from the community and this is a critical opportunity because we’re putting together a new four-year Council Plan.

“After council elections there is a reset on the Council Plan which is our key strategic document.

“It will guide what we do and the plan

strongly influences the Budget through which we allocate resources to deliver the commitments made in the plan.”

Cr Blain encouraged all residents to think in the medium to long-term about how they want Warrnambool to function.

What council services and programs are important to you?

“It’s your chance to have a say about the future direction of our city,” Cr Blain said.

A listening post has been scheduled for today (Friday, January 17) in Liebig Street at the mid-block crossing between Koroit and Lava streets from 4pm-6pm.

A session will also be held in West Warrnambool, at Pecten Avenue Park, between 4pm-6pm next Tuesday, January 21.

“For those who can’t make it to a listening post we’re happy to receive ideas via mail, phone call or you can share your views online at www. yoursaywarrnambool.com.au”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain encourages residents to have input into the development of the next Council Plan and budget.

Youth camp introduces young people to dairy industry

MORE than 40 young people from across Victoria and South Australia enjoyed a taste of the dairy industry at a camp in Noorat early January.

The Western District Youth Camp was held at the Noorat Showgrounds from January 6-8 and attracted a capacity 44 participants aged 8-16 from Gippsland, northern Victoria, south-east South Australia and the local community.

The camp, revived last year after a three-year hiatus, aimed to introduce a new generation of young people to the world of dairy cattle.

Organising committee member Bryan Dickson said the 2024 camp was a resounding success and this year’s event had also been fully subscribed.

Mr Dickson said there was a strong focus on education and dairy career pathways, along with animal husbandry and raising cattle.

There was also opportunities for participants to learn about showing cattle, which culminated in a handling competition.

Representatives from WestVic Dairy, DemoDAIRY Foundation and the Timboon Agriculture Project were on hand to discuss potential career opportunities and pathways in the dairy industry.

There was also talks from people who have shown and judged cattle in competitions around Australia and USA.

The camp received strong support from the industry, including major sponsors

DemoDAIRY Foundation, Genetics Australia and Jefo.

Mr Dickson said support from sponsors was essential for the success of the event to support the future of the dairy industry.

“The basic reason for running the camp is to get young people interested in dairying and agriculture in general,” Mr Dickson said.

“A lot of kids who did agricultural

programs at school became dairy farmers because of that exposure, and we want to inspire the next generation to do the same.

“Some kids who attended last year from Melbourne had never been on a farm before or had any involvement with cows and they got a lot out of it. Gone are the days when most people had a relative on a farm that they could visit.”

Most of the participants had some farming background but some were introduced to agriculture for the first time.

Mr Dickson said the camp had been fully booked, with people on a waiting list.

“It was a good number and we weren’t able to take any more, but it shows the level of interest in dairy and agriculture,” he said.

THERE was plenty of history on show on the lawns of Lake Pertobe last weekend.

The Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club Car Show once again attracted large crowds.

With clear skies overhead, visitors enjoyed the opportunity to browse the range of vehicles on display and to chat with proud owners.

The Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club, which was founded in 1973, holds monthly meetings and outings and welcomes new members.

The club is home to a group of enthusiasts who share a common interest in the restoration, preservation and collection of veteran, vintage and classic cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles and stationary engines.

All members’ vehicles are manufactured prior to 1991.

Avian influenza outbreak ends

AGRICULTURE Victoria has lifted quarantine on the last property impacted by H7 avian influenza, bringing the outbreak in Victoria to an end.

In 2024 Victoria experienced Australia’s largest avian influenza outbreak.

Between May 22 and June 24, eight commercial poultry properties in south-west Victoria had birds that tested positive for high pathogenicity H7 avian influenza.

Seven infected properties near Meredith were confirmed to have a high pathogenicity H7N3 strain of avian influenza, and one infected property near Terang was confirmed to have a high pathogenicity H7N9 strain.

Victoria’s acting chief veterinary officer Dr Cameron Bell said the two Victorian H7 strains of avian influenza were now successfully eradicated.

“Victoria’s response included undertaking extensive surveillance, with testing of 38,000 birds taking place,” Dr Bells said.

“The collaborative efforts of government, the chicken meat and egg industries, and the community have ensured that we could respond effectively to the outbreak.”

All bird owners across Victoria are reminded to maintain good biosecurity practices including keeping poultry sheds, yards, aviaries and equipment clean and excluding wild birds from feed and drinking water.

If you are a poultry farmer, backyard flock owner or bird owner, report any unexplained bird deaths to your private vet, Agriculture Victoria on 136 186 or the Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Grant applications close tonight

LOCAL community groups have until tonight to apply for funding through the 2024-25 Volunteer Grants program.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan has today urged all local organisations to apply for funding in this latest round of grants.

“These grants can assist with the purchase of essential items that make volunteering easier, safer and more enjoyable,” Mr Tehan said.

“This includes equipment, training, transport, and initiatives to promote volunteering, increase awareness and inspire greater participation.

“Volunteers are crucial to the fabric of our communities, supporting the operations of social, educational, sporting, cultural, and environmental groups and activities.”

He believes volunteers are the backbone of every community.

“By continuing to support one other and work together, we are creating a stronger and safer Wannon,” Mr Tehan added. Grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are available to assist community organisations in supporting the valuable work of volunteers.

Expressions of interest will close at 5pm tonight (Friday, January 17).

Interested groups are urged to contact Mr Tehan’s office today on 1300 131 692.

Yoga festival adds to events calendar

A NEW festival will call Warrnambool “Om” in June.

The inaugural Warrnambool Yoga Festival invites people of all ages and ability levels to sample a variety of yoga styles and wellbeing workshops over the course of a weekend.

After successfully running yoga festivals in Bendigo and on the Bass Coast, event organiser Rosie Richards said she was excited to be coming to Warrnambool.

“I am thrilled to extend a heartfelt invitation to all local yogis, wellness practitioners and community members to be part of this special event,” Ms Richards said.

“This festival is more than just a gathering. It’s a chance for our community to come together, share experiences, and ignite our collective passion for wellness.

“We are seeking local instructors, wellness experts and businesses who would love to contribute by leading classes, offering talks, or showcasing their products and services at our event exhibitors’ space.”

Whether you’re a seasoned yoga teacher, a passionate wellness advocate, or someone who runs a business that aligns with our mission of health and wellness, all are welcome to join.

“Having seen the incredible impact of yoga festivals in communities like Bendigo and Bass Coast, where they sparked new collaborations and a sense of collective community consciousness, I know this event will bring something truly special to this local area.

“It’s not just about yoga; it’s about

A new yoga festival, scheduled for June, will add to Warrnambool’s growing events calendar.

connecting with one another, learning from each other and creating a space where we can all grow together.”

The event is supported by the Warrnambool City Council, with mayor Cr Ben Blain welcoming the new addition to the city’s events calendar.

“A big part of our events strategy is about attracting destination events that people travel to attend, especially during the off-peak season, and the

Warrnambool Yoga Festival aligns with this perfectly,” he said.

“As Victoria’s largest coastal city outside of Port Phillip Bay, we are the ideal place for a yoga festival.

“Warrnambool combines the fresh sea air and natural beauty of the coast with the facilities and amenities needed for great events.”

According to the mayor, the event organisers have a large and loyal

following and he was looking forward to welcoming everyone to Warrnambool in June.

“And for locals with an interest in yoga, this is an amazing opportunity coming to your doorstep,” he said.

The Warrnambool Yoga Festival will run from June 7-8.

Country Week victory for Gold

Warrnambool Moyne Gold under 17 team

WARRNAMBOOL Moyne Gold has taken out the under 17 Country Week title for 2024/25.

After a successful round of matches throughout the week, Gold faced South West in last week’s grand final. Gold won the toss and sent their opponents in to bat at Reid Oval on Friday. Thomas Bellman showed great versatility with the ball, taking 5/9 from eight overs and proving a challenge for the South West batsmen. South West finished its 40 overs with a score of 9/138. In reply, Warrnambool Moyne Gold chased down the total in 34 overs to reach 4/139.

Openers Cooper Herry (16) and Ryan Mottram (47) were strong at the crease. They were ably supported by team-mates Mitchell McCosh, with an unbeaten 34 runs from 63 deliveries, Josh Slater (22) and captain Charlie James who hit seven from 15 balls.

Along with Bellman, other wicket takers for Warrnambool Moyne Gold were Ryan Mottram 1/17, Cooper Herry 1/12 and Charlie James 1/28.
