THE immediate future of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Festival was secured yesterday with a state government pledge of $200,000 over two years.
Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora made the announcement while in Warrnambool late yesterday afternoon, saying she was thrilled to see such an important sporting event on the local calendar receive funding.
“Victoria is the nation’s sporting capital and we’re backing even more of the sporting drawcards that support communities, businesses and athletes while delivering thousands of visitors to destinations (such as Warrnambool) across the state,” Ms Ermacora said.
“More sporting events means a win for sports fans and for local jobs, drawing visitors and delivering more benefits to regional businesses across accommodation, hospitality, tourism and retail.”
Ms Ermacora said this week’s funding allocation provides security over two years and reflects the strength and importance of the Melbourne to Warrnambool (M2W) events in recent years.
‘It’s a historic event with a big future.”
The M2W was first held in 1895 and is the world’s second oldest one-day cycling race.
It is also the longest cycling race in the southern hemisphere.
The festival also includes the Port Campbell to Warrnambool community handicap race for club cyclists, the men’s M2W from Avalon Airport and the ‘Women’s Warrnie’ from Colac.
Organisers anticipate 340 athletes will enter next year’s event, attracting more than 2,600 spectators en route.

WITH the Dragonboat season just around the corner, members of the Warrnambool club, the South C Dragons, are preparing for a busy weekend. This weekend will see a team manager and six breast cancer survivor paddlers from the club travel to Hobart to take part in the ‘Pink Power Paddle.’
Abreast Hobart, will also be supported by Dragons Abreast Australia (and Tasmania).
The theme for the event will be ‘pink and sparkly’ which will help raise awareness of breast cancer research.
Once breast cancer treatment has been completed, dragon boat training can help people with mental health, general well-being and exercise in an inclusive
environment.
The South C Dragons will also be well represented in Ballarat this weekend, with crews heading to Lake Wendouree to compete in the Dragon Boat Victoria regatta.
This will be a test of stamina for the crews, who compete not only in the usual 200 metre races but also one kilometre events.

TRAIN travel to and from Melbourne looks set to “improve” for locals following this week’s announcement of new and extended services.
During a visit to Warrnambool on Tuesday morning, Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams announced that a new V/Line timetable would deliver a range of new travel options for regional passengers on one of Victoria’s busiest lines.
The timetable will take effect from Sunday, December 1 and will deliver 68 new weekend services for Geelong line passengers and the introduction of a fourth weekend service on the Warrnambool line.
Passengers will also see the introduction of VLocity trains on the Warrnambool line for the first time starting next Friday, November 1.
In reply to concerns that the new trains would see a reduction in the number of available seats for passengers, Ms Williams remained confident that the new trains – and the added weekend service – would be welcomed.
“Logistically, these platforms are not long enough for six-carriage VLocity trains but we are confident these new trains will provide a more comfortable ride and will be more easily accessible for the community,” Ms Williams said.
According to Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora, these new trains will deliver more modern, reliable and accessible journeys.
“New VLocity trains for the first time on the Warrnambool line, coupled with an extra service on weekends, is a big improvement for people across the south west,” Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora said.
“These trains will be comfortable, efficient and will also provide greater accessibility for all.”
The new services are part of the government’s election promise to deliver up to 200 extra weekend services, which are being rolled out progressively across the regional network.
The introduction of VLocity services follows the completion of the Geelong and Warrnambool line upgrades.
These upgrades included the replacement of around 70,000 sleepers between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool, the duplication of eight kilometres of track,
and the removal or upgrade of 67 level crossings.
“The government’s regional fare cap has transformed the way people travel around the state, with more than 33 million train trips taken across the network and more than $90 million saved since it was introduced last year,” the Minister said.

A UNIQUE fundraising initiative involving tomato seeds has grown into a $6000 donation for the Warrnambool Community Garden.
The surprise donation, announced at the 15-year anniversary celebration by Perry and Rose Cho, will significantly boost the Sprouts Club program.
This program introduces children to gardening and cooking with fresh produce.
Last weekend saw the first open day held for the garden in over five years and attracted more than 500 visitors.
The large crowds enjoyed an afternoon of music and art while making their way through the gardens.
The Sprouts Club kid’s garden has seen significant renewal this year.
A nature-based mural by artists Sheridan and Jimmi Buscombe has been added, alongside an extension of six water-efficient wicking beds forming a ‘Community Court’ with the support of Perry and Rose Cho and Foodcube.
A ribbon cutting officially opened the area, followed by an announcement of the additional major donation.
Perry Cho, the mastermind behind the tomato seed sale, said they had always wanted to find a creative way to support the garden that aligned with its purpose and would benefit the next generation of young growers.
“The enthusiasm for varieties like ‘Cowboy’ and ‘Rebel Starfighter Prime’ exceeded all expectations, showing how passionate our community is about gardening and sustainability,” Mr Cho said.
“This initiative raised an impressive initial sum, with additional donations from current and past partners of Sinclair Wilson.”
The funds will provide gardening resources to empower young children to plant, grow and harvest food.
Sprouts Club coordinator Heather Ryan expressed her gratitude for last weekend’s donation.
“This generous donation means so much to our volunteer-run program, and we’re all absolutely delighted with the news,” Ms Ryan said.
“We are incredibly thankful to Perry and Rose, as well as the community, for their support.”
The renovated all-abilities nursery, designed to suit a wider range of people to garden more comfortably, also benefited from Perry and Rose Cho’s donation with four Foodcubes installed on-site.
This was opened by Felicity Melican, trustee of the A.L. Lane Foundation and Lisa McLeod, executive officer of the Fletcher Jones Family Foundation.
Over the past 15 years the site has transformed from a weed-infested parcel of unused land into a community hub full of life through the work of dedicated volunteers.
year-anniversary
“Last Saturday’s celebration was a wonderful day and it was wonderful to see so many community members there to celebrate this special milestone with us and to see how the garden has developed over the years,” committee member and event organiser, Jeff Rollinson said.
“And what made the day even more special, I believe, was to see some of the founding members from the garden’s first five years, back to see how much it has grown and developed.”
As the garden enters its next chapter, it is seeking members and volunteers for roles ranging from gardening helpers to event coordinators.
This presents a unique opportunity for community members to directly shape the future of this vital local resource.

SOCIAL housing properties across Warrnambool currently lie vacant amid a housing crisis across the state.
Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell this week spoke of her concerns over the number of empty houses sitting dormant at a time when hundreds of people, including families, are struggling to find accommodation.
“Concerned residents across the south west coast have alerted me to vacant public housing in this area,” Ms Britnell said.
“We are in the middle of a housing crisis, where people urgently need a roof over their heads.
“It is cruel to have people waiting on social housing lists when houses sit empty for years on end.”
Ms Britnell claims the crisis has been orchestrated and driven by “appalling project management and out of control waste.”
“The government cannot manage money, it cannot managing housing and now Victorians are paying the price,” she said.
Ms Britnell also added that the state government began its ‘Big Housing Build’ in 2020 with a promise of 12,000 new homes, however the Auditor General reported that as of March 2024, the government had already spent $2.9 billion of its planned $5.6 billion dollars, only to see a net decrease in homes.
“Official figures have confirmed between June 2023 and December 2023 total public housing supply in fact decreased by 446 homes,” Ms Britnell said.
“Then in July this year, the government approved tenders to demolish over 600 homes by September 2025 before it builds new stock. This has led to public housing across the state lying vacant.”
NOMINATIONS for the 2025 Warrnambool Citizen of the Year Awards are now open.
Held annually, the awards recognise the people and events that make Warrnambool a great place to live and visit.
Categories include Warrnambool Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (aged 16-30), Community Event of the Year and Local Achiever.
Warrnambool City Council chief executive officer Andrew Mason encouraged everyone to think about who they feel deserves wider recognition for their contributions to Warrnambool, and to nominate them for an award.
“Behind every great community initiative, event, group or club, there are passionate, determined and community-minded people who make it happen,” Mr Mason said.
“People who give their time, effort and expertise to make the lives of others that much better.
“These awards are about publicly thanking these people for the contributions they make to the community.
“Taking a few minutes to nominate someone for an award is a great way to show your appreciation for everything that they do.”
The awards will be presented in early 2025.
Nominations will close on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
In January this year musician and disability advocate Tom Richardson was named Warrnambool Citizen of the Year and deputy convener of the Warrnambool Community Garden and founder of Fruit Rescue Courtney Mathew was named Young Citizen of the Year.
Warrnambool theatre stalwart Ailiche Goddard-Clegg was the recipient of the Local Achiever Award and the F Project’s Fabric of Life Festival was the Community Event of the Year.

AS the warmer weather approaches, our thoughts turn to staying cool – and that includes time spent travelling. Before heading off, particularly on longer journeys, make sure you do a
quick check to ensure your vehicle is running at its best.
Check water and oil and also make sure your tyres are roadworthy and the pressures are set to those recommended by manufacturers – if in doubt, speak with your local tyre experts who have the
knowledge and experience to ensure a safe ride.
And when it comes to your vehicle’s air conditioning (AC), there are some things you can do to get the most out of its system.
Your AC relies on your car’s engine to work efficiently; the faster the engine turns, the better your system will work.
The opposite is also true. If you’re not diving around, the AC will take more out of our car in order to work at its best.
Instead of forcing your AC system to go into overdrive the minute you turn your car on, put the rear windows down, start driving and let the fan start working.
Driving around for 30 seconds or so can force all the hot air out of your vehicle’s interior, placing less pressure on the AC to provide quick relief to not only yourself but also your passengers.
Choosing the lowest temperature and using your fan properly should prove more cost-efficient.
While some believe the lower the temperature the more work the AC has to do, this may in fact be the other way around.
Your typical AC system cools the air down to a certain temperature (one that’s usually lower than you may think).
If you choose a higher temperature, the AC will need to heat the air instead; burning more fuel as it works.
The recirculation and fresh air modes on your vehicle’s heating and AC system are designed to regulate the air quality and comfort of your vehicle’s interior.
Knowing when to use them can help you stay comfortable and save some wear and tear on your AC system.
Selecting recirculation mode closes an air duct in the front of the car so that the air from outside doesn’t come inside.
Recirculating the air, particularly on a hot day, puts less stress on your car’s ‘blower motor’ and air compressor, improving the efficiency.
It is recommended that recirculation mode should only be used when the air conditioner is on.
This mode is also useful when you need to cool down a hot car quickly.
Recirculating cooled air, rather than bringing in fresh air from outside, can cool your vehicle quicker.
Recirculating mode can also help to keep out unpleasant odours – which can be helpful at such times as driving behind a large truck, through a tunnel, or when behind a diesel vehicle.
So make sure you get your air-con checked and vehicle serviced before you head away, don’t leave
WITH the fire season fast approaching, residents are being urged to take extra care when burning off.
Having responded to three or four callouts over the past week alone where property owners have lit a fire only to have it get out of control, or reignite days later, has prompted calls for residents to remain vigilant.
While some recent rains have been welcomed by farmers across the district, the ground remains extremely dry, providing added fuel for fire.
“A lot of people are now burning off, clearing their properties before the real hot weather arrives, and we’re certainly not saying don’t do that, but please remain vigilant and don’t get complacent,” brigade captain with the Koroit Fire Brigade Steve Giblin said.
“Don’t light and leave; make sure you have plenty of water nearby in case the fire gets away and always keep an eye on the area in the days that follow in case it reignites.
“We attended three or four call outs in almost as many days; one was a bonfire where the property owner burnt some rubbish in a small paddock only to have it reignite three days later.”
Captain Giblin said he feared some residents may notice the grass getting greener and not be aware how dry it remains underneath.
“There is no water in the mulch layer and that’s catching people out,” he said. “We haven’t had enough real soaking rain and the ground is hard and dry.”
Access to properties in the event of a fire is also of concern to brigade members.
“Some gateways are extremely tight for our trucks, with overhanging branches and other obstacles,” Captain Giblin said.
“We’d appreciate it if property owners could look around and check vehicle access; clear any debris or overhanging branches that may hinder our entry and exit.
“We want to be able to get to the fire as quickly as possible to ensure the best possible outcome.”
With around 30 volunteers, the Koroit Fire Brigade plays not only an important role within its local community but also as a vital support in to Warrnambool.
“Of our 30 volunteers, more than 20
remain active members,” Captain Giblin said.
“Koroit is fortunate to have such a strong, local brigade and our pumper continues to support Warrnambool on a regular basis.
“But we always welcome new members – some of us are starting to get a little
older so it would be great to get some more young ones on board. Like many voluntary organisations, it can be hard to get and retain young volunteers.”
Having recently re-introduced roadside burns, the brigade is planning another burn along Koroit-Woolsthorpe Road in early December.

STAYING active as you get older is not only important for physical health but also for good mental health.
Being active as we age helps to reduce the risk of many diseases, including some cancers, while also helping to maintain a healthy weight.
As we age it’s important to try to do some form of physical activity every day –whether that’s going for a brisk (or leisurely walk) or simply spending some time outdoors in the garden.
If you have health problems, make sure you consult your doctor or other health professional before starting any exercise program.
Find an activity that best suits you.
This could be swimming in a warm pool, participating in gentle water activities or even trying some weight bearing and strength activities.
Even a slight increase in daily physical activity can help improve your overall health and wellbeing.
This can help reduce symptoms such as high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and a range of joint and bone problems.
Being active can also strengthen muscles and agility and, in turn, reduce your risk of falls and injury.
Exercise will give you more energy, improve your sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, improve concentration and improve your mental health.
For people over the age of 65, it is recommended you do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week.
If you find 30 minutes too difficult, begin with just 10 minutes twice a day and increase this to 15 minutes after the first two weeks.
Try to incorporate a range of activities into your week and reduce the amount of time spent sitting.
Moderate fitness activities can include brisk walking, aerobics or water aerobics, cycling, yard work, tennis and even household chores such as mopping and dusting.
Some activities that will help improve your mobility and

AN international work placement has shown Wangoom’s Ella Titmus that there’s a wide world of animals needing veterinary care.
Ultimately Ella expects to focus on cattle when she completes her veterinary science studies at James Cook University Townsville, supported by a DemoDAIRY Foundation tertiary scholarship.
However, the course also recently led her to a placement in South Africa where she travelled with a vet around a small region bordering the Kruger National Park, attending to rhino, lion, cheetah, numerous antelope species, giraffe and lots of buffalo and wildebeest.
“It was really interesting to see the differences between all those animals and cattle,” Ella said.
“The main thing that surprised me about their management was their inability to use yards (due to animal handling stress) so every animal that had to be moved was required to be darted by the vet.”
While Ella said the placement was an opportunity of a lifetime, unfortunately she didn’t get to attend a cattle farm.
“However, the vet I was traveling with from South Africa grew up with cattle, so it was fascinating conversing with her about the industry over there,” she said.
Ella is in her fourth year of study and has started more clinical studies including bovine, equine and small animal medicine, basic surgery practicals weekly, radiography, anaesthesiology, calf pulling simulations and clinical pathology.
“This is our last year of theory and content; our final year is based around
clinical rotations and workshops which is really exciting,” Ella said.
Ella has been traveling home to do clinical placements in south west Victoria, including Cobden and Ballarat.
“It’s really exciting to finally be in a clinical setting where I can start to put my knowledge into practice,” she said.
“The area has some extraordinary vets who are a wealth of knowledge and it is an amazing opportunity to learn from them in the field.”
The DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship has been a major source of support for Ella.
“The scholarship has definitely reduced my financial stress and allowed me to travel abroad and make the most of opportunities that come my way,” she said.
“The past few years I have put the scholarship towards my HECs debt which has been an amazing help and has allowed me to afford to travel home for placements.”
Ella said she was incredibly grateful for the DemoDAIRY scholarship.

WARRNAMBOOL’S Flagstaff Hill
will come alive with all the colour, excitement, fun and activities of the early 1800s during this year’s second annual ‘Wreckfest’ celebration.
To be held on Sunday, November 3, this unique festival will take visitors back 150 years for an emersion into the lives of our forefathers – and offer a glimpse of the way they lived.
There will be working displays, old trades, cane fishing rod demonstrations and high tea in the lovely tea rooms of Flagstaff Hill. Wreckfest committee members Ken Sharpe and Glenda Peterson are excited to see the rare trades festival return to Flagstaff Hill and believe next weekend’s event will be even better than before.
“We were thrilled with the response we had last year and I’m sure we will attract just as many visitors, if not more, next weekend,” Mr Sharpe said.
“The museum and village have a unique cultural system; it portrays the story of the coast and portrays life in a shipping port back in the 1800s.”
This year’s festival will see an array of skilled artisans including knife makers, wool spinners, hand shearing, laser-cut fire pits, screen printing and glass art.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy calligraphy lessons and tarot reading sessions while live music, family entertainment and face painting will highlight the fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
And visitors to Wreckfest won’t go hungry, with amply food vendors on hand to satisfy hungry stomachs, along with some traditional lollies and plenty of games and activities for children to enjoy.
“Community events have a unique ability to bring local groups together, giving people a sense of ownership and pride in their local areas and an opportunity to celebrate and embrace local diversity,” Glenda said.
And for those who can’t make it to Flagstaff Hill on the Sunday, there’s plenty of activities also planned for the day prior – Saturday, November 2.
A silk scarf art workshop will run from 10am, a cider crafting workshop with Mike Juleff will also start at 10am and at 11am and 3.30pm Donna the Tarot Witch Lady will host palm readings.
Wreckfest will run from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, November 3.

ROBOTS are making an exciting inclusion to classroom fun at Koroit and District Primary School.
The school recently received a $3,000 grant from the Port Fairy and District Community Bank, which was used for the purchase of some brightly coloured robots.
The new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) robots encourage students to engage in coding
experiences as they explore the world through a robotic and coding lens.
With support from STEAM teacher Melanie Vesey, students are now learning how to program the robots through collaborative project-based skills.
The robots come equipped with speakers, sensors, microphones, lights and motors and are activated through an app.
These are being used by students from foundation through to year six level.

group of talented year three/four students have dribbled and shot their way through to this year’s state basketball finals, to be held in Melbourne on December 5. The young basketballers finished on top at this week’s regionals in Hamilton, earning themselves a place at the state titles (and, according to staff, believed to be for the first time in the school’s history).
In Hamilton earlier this week, Koroit tested themselves against teams from St Johns, Allansford, Hamilton College, St Mary’s and Grassmere.
POPULAR Warrnambool-based band ‘Convict Class’ has returned from its triumphant tour of the UK.
While overseas the band played to packed venues and impressed fans from all over the globe with their Aussie punk rock.
“We all had an amazing time playing at some iconic venues and making so many new friends,” band member Ben Lakey said.
Convict Class began the tour in Bristol, alongside three other Aussie bands, and received positive feedback from the event organiser and people who attended the show.
“We couldn’t believe that so many people new us and travelled from all over the UK to come watch us in Bristol,” fellow band member Shane Godfrey said.
Convict Class then headed to Belgium for a one-off gig in Kortrijk.
“This was a real experience for us and some great stories came from our adventures through France and Belgium,” Alistair Wilby said.
“We played with a band from China and met some really great people from Belgium and beyond.”
Convict Class then converged on the famous Blackpool in England and played at the Scream and Shake Horror Bar on the eve of the Rebellion Punk Music Festival.
“It was a small venue which had a capacity of 75 people situated on a mall,” Mr Wilby said.
“When we played we had 150 people inside and another 200-odd outside in the mall.
“That was one of the most memorable nights we have had and really set the tone for the coming days.”
The band then took to the stage at the Rebellion Punk Music Festival, which ran for four days from August 1, with seven indoor stages at Winter Gardens.
Over 300 bands from all over the world played with over 20,000 punks staying in Blackpool for the long weekend.
“Blackpool is a coastal city and the residents really embrace this festival with businesses having signs and posters everywhere welcoming the punks,” Shane Stenhouse said.
Convict Class performed on the final day of the festival – in front of a crowd in excess of 1,000 patrons.
“It was a pinch me moment to know that 1,000 people came to see us play and that there were people waiting outside to get in,”
Mr Stenhouse said.
“Fans that we were yet to meet from all corners of the globe singing along to our songs was very overwhelming.
“We are truly humbled by the response we received and to be given the opportunity to play at the biggest and oldest running Punk festival in the world”.
Convict Class is already planning to return to the UK in 2026.

THERE was an exciting buzz at Port Fairy Consolidated School late last week and into the weekend.
The school celebrated its 150th year in style, with large crowds of past and present families, staff, students and community members united to mark this special milestone.
Celebrations began last Friday when the school’s youngest student this year, five year-old Austin Sealey, had the honour of cutting a special birthday cake during assembly.
Austin was joined by the eldest returning former student, 99 year-old Frank Pevitt, along with Des Chapman (94) and Eric Bishop (93).
An official opening of the school’s new Ninja Warrior playground course and stage one of the school master plan also coincided with birthday celebrations.
“We thank our Parents and Friends Association (past and present) for their amazing planning and fundraising,” staff member Leah Evans said.
Visitors to the school over the weekend also had the opportunity to view a special ‘Past, Present and Our Future’ mural by artist Sherry Johnstone.
Multiple school tours, led by year six school ambassadors, were enjoyed last Saturday – along with a selection of memorabilia and archives on display in the front foyer and library.
“We would like to thank everyone who attended our celebrations, all our volunteers and celebration committee members who made this possible,” Ms Evans said.
WITH the warmer weather just around the corner, local boaters are being urged to start preparing their vessels for a return to the water.
In order to help boaters return safely two boating safety initiatives were launched earlier this week.
This includes a new partnership between Safe Transport Victoria and the maritime smartphone app DECKEE – and the seasonal Back to Basics program.
Both initiatives were recently launched at the 2024 Melbourne Boat Show at Docklands.
“Victoria’s waterways are perfect for a day of boating, fishing, jet-skiing or paddle boarding,” Minister for Outdoor Recreation
Steve Dimopoulos said.
“Downloading DECKEE and following the Back to Basics program helps vessel owners enjoy their time on the water while making sure they return home safely.”
Safe Transport Victoria’s partnership with DECKEE provides Victorian boaters with a smarter way to get information on mandatory safety equipment and waterway rules that, thanks to the GPS capabilities of
DECKEE, are relevant to their location and vessel type.
DECKEE shows weather forecasts, wave and tide information.
It also features details of boat ramps and has the capability to record a boater’s trip, allowing family and friends to see the boater’s location in real time.
Safe Transport Victoria’s seasonal Back to Basics program provides simple, yet essential tips on boat maintenance and safety equipment, teaching boaters how to achieve safe and trouble-free boating.
In 2023-24, 85 per cent of marine incidents were due to vessel disablement, commonly caused by motor breakdowns, equipment failure, or running out of fuel.
Regular maintenance is critical to preventing these issues.
Back to Basics covers all the essentials to help prevent mishaps, from routine maintenance of the engine, hull and electrical systems, to ensuring fuel levels are sufficient and lifejackets are ready for use.

WHILE the weather may not have been ideal for little athletics last week, the Warrnambool track was full of athletes keen to begin the new season.
More than 130 athletes took part in the first session of the 2024-25 season, all eager to be put through their paces in a variety of events.
Long jump, 100m and 300m were all on the program and thankfully the rain held off long enough to be able to complete all events.
The Warrnambool Little Athletics Club committee thanks all parents who attended for their patience while registrars Jess and Cindy learnt to navigate the new registration process and ensured all athletes had their patches (and necessary pins) in place.
This year the centre is looking forward to seeing its new SunSmart tees join the competition uniforms.
All uniforms will be available in the coming weeks.
Tonight (Friday, October 25) there will again be a three-event warm up program before the usual program begins.
The club is also looking forward to seeing hurdles back in action after many years.
Anyone interested in joining the family fun and fitness that little athletics brings, a two week trial membership is available on the Little Athletics Victoria website.
The club is looking forward to seeing all members back at the Brauerander Park track from 5pm tonight.

GOLFER Ben Lee took out the Ray Eccles Trophy at the East Framlingham Golf Club last weekend.
Last Saturday’s stableford competition attracted a strong field to the course.
A grade was won by Tony Kenna on 36 points, followed by Gerard Eccles 33, David Cashin 33, Murray Drake 33 and Ayden Bosse 31.
B grade was won by Ben Lee on 48 points, followed by Callum Henriksen 41, Justin Fedley 41, Glen Tracey 36 and Ray Eccles 34.
The social winner was Jim Lewis.
Nearest the pins: 3rd Ben Lee, 7th and 9th Gerard Eccles.
The eagles nest went to Ben Lee.
Next week will be an ambrose competition.
WHILE most 10-pin bowlers can only dream of scoring a perfect 300 game, David Altmann has achieved this 23 times.
David has been bowling since juniors and has competed in many tournaments, both locally and away.
He currently averages an impressive 220 in League competition and recently bowled his 23rd perfect game at the Warrnambool venue.
David’s talents in bowling alleys far and wide has seen him represent Warrnambool in both junior and adult Country Cups and he can also boast having bowled ‘a perfect 300’ in various venues all over the state.

THE new clay surface at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway will be put to the test next weekend with the opening round of season 2024/25.
Action hots up on Saturday night (November 2) when Sprintcars and Wingless Sprints make their way on to the track for what no doubt will be an exciting night for racegoers.
The much anticipated and long-awaited return to the new clay for the season-opener will give drivers and teams the chance to showcase their adaptability in front of what is anticipated to be a strong crowd.
With the cancellation of this Sunday’s second practice session, next Saturday (for some teams) will be the first opportunity to turn their wheels on the new surface.
Premier Speedway general manager Michael Parry said he was looking forward to night one of the new season.
“We had over 50 cars, with a great variety of open wheel and sedan divisions, take to the track on our practice session on October 12,” Mr Parry said.
“That was only the second run on the track so it provided
an opportunity for some good learnings for our track team ahead of the season proper.
“We haven’t had a lot of feedback from drivers to date, but I feel everyone understands it’s a new surface.”
The 2024/25 race calendar is shaping up to be an exciting one at the venue, with three race meetings before Christmas.
Saturday November 2 will see Sprintcars and Wingless Sprints on the track and Saturday, November 16 will be the 360-LS Sprintcar series and the Formula 500 Jack Willsher Cup.
December 14 will be the annual Max’s Race for Sprintcars along with the return of the V8 Dirt Modifieds and Junior Formula 500s.
After the Christmas break, action will return to the track on New Year’s Day (January 1, 2025) with Street Stocks and the final round of Sprintcar Speedweek.
Sunday, January 5 is a jam-packed program with over 100 cars expected for a ‘super Sunday night of racing.
The Pro Speedcar Week series headlines the program, and will be joined by Wingless Sprints and V8 Super Sedans.
The ARB Warrnambool International Sprintcar Carnival is a Sprintcar-only event and will be staged on Sunday, January 19.
January’s big draw crowd – the 2025 Flying Horse Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic – will take place over three days; January 24, 25 and 26.
February will see an all-Sedan spectacular on Saturday, February 8 along with the Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championship on Friday, February 21.
Race enthusiasts will be treated to a huge event on Saturday, March 15 with the staging of the Victorian Sprintcar Title, Junior Formula 500s and the Vintage Sprintcars.
March 29 is the 360-LS Victorian Sprintcar Championship along with the Super Rod Cup.
The 2024-25 race season will culminate on Sunday, April 20 with the running of the Easter Sprintcar Trail (including the final round of the Warrnambool track championship), Super Rods and the always-popular fireworks display. For season tickets head online to the Premier Speedway page.
STRONG performances in front of the wickets by AllansfordPanmure’s top order batsmen earned the Gators a round two win last weekend.
Winning the toss and electing to bat against Warrnambool, the Gators were quick to get some runs on the board.
Opener Declan Bourke hit his way to an effective 51 runs while team-mates Bailey Smith (42), Thomas Sinnott (33) and Manulak Sajan Fernando (20) were also strong.
Warrnambool’s Dinusha Jayasinghe was effective with the ball, taking 3/31 from nine overs while captain Anthony Love also took a wicket, finishing the day with 1/29 off seven.
In reply Warrnambool were restricted to 10/113 in the 41st over, with opener Jason Greer (4), Jordan Cashin (10) and Anthony Love (10) the only batsmen to reach double figures.
Simon Richardson had a great day out with the ball, taking 5/26 off nine while Archie Poumako took 3/16 off his seven overs.
Other round two winners were Mortlake over Merrivale, Koroit defeated Nirranda Titans and Hawkesdale went down to Noorat Terang.
Round three of the Warrnambool Moyne Championship division this weekend will see the Gators head to Hawkesdale, Koroit will be at home to Noorat Terang, Nirranda Titans will host Mortlake and Warrnambool will host Merrivale.
PEDRINA Park was a hive of activity last Friday night when South West Victorian Football Association hosted a special ‘Friendly Friday Under Lights’ event.
South West’s two representative squads, the under 12 and under 11 teams, enjoyed matches against Football South Australia’s Limestone Coast Development Centre.
The under 11 squads entertained the crowd with a high-scoring battle.
Limestone Coast had a strong first half, after striking early and scoring two goals from strong offensive plays.
South West rallied but was unable to shut down their opponents’ strong offensive drives, going down 4-5.
In the under 12 match, Limestone Coast also scored early in the first half.
Performances from goal keepers
Jonah Sabo and Ethan Lawrence (South West) and Jacob Schultz (LC) were the highlight of the match.
South West showed great offensive work and found the back of the net on multiple occasions and defended well to win 4-1.
Both groups have previously competed in gala days, however this was the first night game under lights –and also South West’s first hit-out for
coach Janis Vingrys at the helm of the under 12 side.
“These friendly matches are a fantastic opportunity for our two Victorian sides to test their mettle before heading to the Shepparton Cup this weekend for our final tournament campaign for 2024,” South West secretary Melissa Condo said.
“We’re very grateful for the effort made by Limestone Coast Development Centre players and families and look forward to creating a regular Friendly Friday fixture next year.”
Limestone Coast coach Nathan Koopman said he was pleased with the standards and attitudes brought
by both associations to the game, and was looking forward to more opportunities for the representative teams to compete.
South West Victorian Football Association will send representative boys and girls squads to several tournaments next year.
This will include Bendigo, the Country Leagues Football Association Country Championships, Western United, and the Shepparton FC.
The group is keen to hear from junior players interested in trialling in November to play representative football in 2025.

THE Stingers have once again showed their skills on the netball court, taking out the All Abilities shield for season 2024. Last Sunday’s final round of the Regional All Abilities Netball League saw some great netball played in high spirits. The season decider came down to the last round of the day between Stingers 1 and Ballarat Bulldogs 1 who went in to the match on equal points. It was the Stingers who prevailed on the final whistle, earning them this season’s championship shield. Special thanks to coaches Betty and Sophie, umpires Ruby and Dakota and all volunteers for their assistance. More photos on page 28.
