Transferring Credit: You have questions. We have answers. Let’s face it, you’ve worked hard to earn college credits, so naturally you will want to know how previous courses will transfer toward your bachelor’s degree. While credit acceptance is governed by Western’s credit policies, the majority of students are pleased to learn that most, if not all, of their previous coursework transfers easily to Western. While Western provides transfer credit reports to all students who have earned college credit before they register for their first quarter, why wait for the good news? You can review the following online tools at any time to determine how many credits Western will accept in transfer, and, most importantly, how those credits will apply toward your degree requirements at Western. Western’s Transfer Course Equivalency Guide, available at admissions.wwu.edu/transfer/cc, provides a detailed list of courses from community colleges and most public baccalaureate institutions in Washington state that Western accepts in transfer. If you have earned transfer credit from a college or university outside Washington state, reviewing the Transfer Course Equivalency Guide and Western’s Catalog for similar courses should give you a good idea of how your credits will transfer. We provide a comprehensive list of credits awarded for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge International exams on our website as well. While Western generally grants credit for baccalaureate-oriented courses completed at institutions of higher education accredited by the Regional Associations of Schools and Colleges, there are some restrictions. A summary of our transfer of credit policies is available at admissions.wwu.edu/transfer. If you have further questions after taking advantage of the resources listed above, please don’t hesitate to contact us at transfer.credit@wwu.edu or (360) 650-3440.

Prepare for a
smooth transition 1. Plan ahead
5. Follow Instructions
From applying before deadlines to ordering transcripts ahead of schedule, your application process will go much more smoothly with some advance legwork. If you intend to earn an associate degree, think of your 2- and 4-year degrees as overlapping, not sequential. With careful planning, you can use the same course for multiple purposes. A course that meets a distribution requirement for your associate degree, for example, might also serve as a necessary prerequisite for your intended major at Western.
Proofread your application, respond promptly to requests for information, and meet deadlines.
2. Prepare for Your Academic Major Whenever possible, complete major prerequisite courses before you transfer. Research the courses required for your academic area, talk with your transfer advisor, and utilize Western’s online resources for transfer students. Gaining related work or volunteer experience helps, too!
3. Complete Math and English Courses Complete college-level mathematics/symbolic reasoning and English Composition prior to submitting your application for admission to Western. Doing so strengthens your application by alleviating any concerns the Admissions Committee may have about your ability in these basic areas.
4. Write an Informative Essay You can further strengthen your application by ensuring your essay helps the Admissions Committee understand:

admissions information for
transfer Students Western is looking for curious, creative, self-directed scholars who are focused on building successful careers and strong futures for themselves and their communities. We welcome transfer students from all types of colleges and universities.
Admission Criteria Minimum requirements for transfer admission consideration include a 2.00 cumulative transferable GPA and a 2.00 in the quarters prior to application review and enrollment. Because the number of applicants exceeds available enrollment space, transfer student admission is selective. The most significant factor in the application review process is academic achievement, which includes cumulative GPA, grade trends, and completion of prerequisites for your intended major. Students who demonstrate a clear academic focus and follow major-specific advising recommendations prior to transferring generally gain a competitive edge in the admissions process. Related experiences, ongoing contributions to and/or experiences with multiculturalism, special talent, personal circumstances, and space availability are also considered. Students with fewer than 45 credits must meet freshman admission requirements. All students must demonstrate proficiency in college-level math and English.
Washington State Community College Students In general, students who earn a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) associate degree from a Washington state community college are assured transfer of 90 credits and have Western’s General University Requirements (GURs) fulfilled. Students who earn an Associate in Science – Transfer (AS-T) degree transfer 90 credits, are prepared for upper-division study in their major, and have additional GURs to complete at Western. Community college students who plan to transfer prior to completing one of these associate degrees should refer to the transfer admission section of Western’s website for a complete list of transfer courses that fulfill Western’s GURs.
International Transfer Students Many international students transfer to Western after earning an associate degree from a Washington state community college. Western has agreements with community colleges from throughout the Puget Sound that guarantee admission to international students who earn an associate degree, earn at least a “B” in two English writing courses or otherwise demonstrate English proficiency, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. International students may apply for general admission, conditional admission, or the Intensive English Program. Additional information and application instructions for these three options is available at admissions.wwu.edu/international.
Running Start Students Earning credits from a Washington state community college can be a great way to get a head start on college. Although credits transfer to Western the same for Running Start and transfer students, all Running Start students – including those who plan to complete an associate degree while in high school – are considered freshmen for admission purposes and must fulfill the requirements for freshman admission (including the submission of SAT or ACT test scores and high school transcripts).
Admission to your Major Transfer students will need to declare a major once they have reached 105 credits. While many academic programs are open to all interested students, others are competitive and may require completion of prerequisite courses, elevated GPA standards, or additional application materials. Since admission to Western does not guarantee admission to a particular major, transfer students are encouraged to make early contact with their major department. At the latest, students should connect with their major department their first quarter at Western.
