Please join us for one hike or all three with Dave Gallup who is a naturalist, historian, and amateur astronomer. Dave has been doing natural history and historic field trips for thirty years in New England. Born and raised in the wilds of Northern Michigan, Dave came to New England in the early 1960’s. Since then, he has been extremely active leading field trips for many nature organizations, schools and colleges throughout Western Massachusetts. Dave has been President of the Springfield Naturalists Club, a nature club dedicated to educating people and sharing with them the joys of nature, for the past 20 years.

Monument Mountain Hike By climbing Monument Mountain and viewing colossal white granite, breaching the landscape like a whale, you will soon discover Herman Melville’s inspiration for “Moby Dick. Other famous authors and poets, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Oliver Wendell Holmes, would come to this area for inspiration as well. If you would like, bring some of their works or your favorite poems to share. A moderately strenuous hike up the trail leads to the summit’s captivating view of the valleys below. Following lunch, we will descend the mountain, and you will have the afternoon to explore, on your own, nearby Stockbridge with its famous Red Lion Inn and Norman Rockwell Museum. *Senior discount does not apply Instructor: Dave Gallup Dates: Saturday, 1 session September 25 Time: 9:00 – 4:00 p.m. Fee: $19

Lost Towns of the Quabbin: Natural History Join Dave Gallup as we step back to the 19th century and discover the once thriving community of Dana – one of the four towns lost when the area was flooded to form the Quabbin Reservoir, en route to Quabbin Cemetary, where we will examine artifacts from the four lost towns (Enfield, Prescott, Greenwich, and Dana), before moving on to Hardwick, a town resembling Dana as it was in the early 1900’s. On this two mile walk (four miles round trip) you will journey on an old road through the open forest, with stops along the way to reflect upon the history and wildlife of the region. Once at Dana Commons, you will inspect the fascinating cellar holes, stone walls, sidewalks, and streets of a town frozen in time. Dave has many surprises, including rare photographs of the beautiful Dana homes that

stood there one hundred years ago, before being dismantled to make way for the reservoir project. Bring your lunch, beverage and camera. Due to ecological concerns, this hike is limited to 25 participants. Sign up early! This trip will fill fast! *Senior discount does not apply Instructor: Dave Gallup Dates: Saturday, 1 session, October 9 Time: 9:00 - 4:00 p.m. Tuition: $19

Hiking the Holyoke Range Join us for a hike through the Holyoke Range. We will be hiking the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail to the top of Mt. Norwotuck, the highest peak on the range. Along the way we will talk about the geology and the forest. After lunch on the summit of Norwotuck, we will hike to the “Horse Caves. Here we will trace the steps of Daniel Shays (Shays Rebellion c. 1787). Legend proclaims that Shays escaped to the horse caves on the range after an ill-fated attempt to raid the Springfield Armory. From the horse caves, we will connect to the Robert Frost Trail on our hike back to the Visitor’s Center. We suggest that participants look up Shay’s Rebellion on the internet at www.encarta.msn. com and bring your favorite Robert Frost poem to read. Please wear sturdy footwear and bring a snack/lunch and water. This is a 3 mile moderately strenuous hike. *Senior discount does not apply Instructor: Dave, Gallup Dates: Saturday, 1 session, November 20 Time: 9:00 – 3:00 p.m. Fee: $19 Please note that we offer a reduced price for registrants over 55 years of age.
