has struggled for fitness this year. But the talented Cork athlete is confident that he will be fit and ready to go for his 1,500m heat on August 3. ‘Most other athletes are probably starting to ease up now while I’m pushing harder. What I won’t have is the depth of build-up races in May and June that I would have liked,’ O ‘Lionaird told The Southern Star. ‘A lot of guys will get to the Olympics tired having raced a lot trying to chase times and

other things. But I will be fresh at the starting line, I’m training well right now and I am managing the injury fairly well. ‘It’s taken a lot longer than I would have liked but I had to make sure that the body was ready to go and was strong enough, and that I wasn’t going to set myself back long-term. ‘I consulted with the doctors here in America and my support staff back at the Irish Institute of Sport in Ireland to make sure that I got the allclear to resume hard training.

O’Lionaird is pencilled in to compete in the 61st Cork City Sports Pre-Olympic International Athletic meeting at the CIT Grounds on Tuesday July 17th, as he steps up his preparations for the Olympics. Based in America, where he trains with the Oregon Track Club Elite in Eugene, Oregon, O’Lionaird expects to run a few warm-up races in Europe in July. ‘It’s not an ideal scenario by any means. But it wasn’t an ideal scenario for me either last year, just getting the time be-

fore the World Championships, but it worked out for me there, O’Lionaird said. ‘There are a lot of fellas who have come out on fire this year, in April and May, but are they going to be able to hold that until London? Only time will tell. I am happy that, at least, I have the qualifying time in my back pocket and I can go to London really focused and fresh, and have my training geared towards that specific event. ‘I am still a young athlete and

for a while there were talks that I might have to give this year a miss to allow my body to recover from the injury and to make sure that it wasn’t going to be an injury that would ruin the rest of my career. ‘We got all the scans, the tendon healed nicely, from where we were two months ago it progressed a lot better and a lot quicker, and I am fortunate that I am able to give the Olympics my full focus now.’ • For an exclusive interview with Ciaran O’Lionaird, read page 41.

CORK will not underestimate Offaly in phase two of the AllIreland hurling qualifiers on Saturday July 7th, according to selector Ger Cunningham. ‘We won’t be underestimating Offaly, even if they were well beaten by Galway in the Leinster semi-final, because we know they are a very capable side on their day,’ Cunningham told The Southern Star. ‘What we were looking for www.southernstar.ie/News/Farming primarily was to get a home draw, and we are very pleased that we got it, because a game information and knowledge, White House and in the garSaturday, October 6, 2012 on the road could have been Gospel of the Living Tree is split den of 10 Downing Street… will pay off in the long run. To unite in their attempts to prevent closures and cutbacks in rural areas BY JACKIE KEOGH A GROUP of West Cork community activists from the Old Head of Kinsale to the Beara Peninsula have united to form an influential lobby group. The group – who met at the Westlodge Hotel in Bantry recently – say they have united in a bid to prevent the downgrading of garda stations, small schools, post offices, hospitals and the ambulance service in rural areas. The secretary of the West Cork Rural Garda Station Retention Campaign, Margaret Peters, told The Southern Star the community representatives share ‘a common concern’ over the ongoing erosion of vital services throughout West Cork. She said the ‘threat’ was serious enough to attract representatives from the Small Schools Campaign; the Garda Retention Campaign; rural transport; the ambulance services; the community hospitals; the Post Offices; the IFA and the GAA; as well as community councils; community alert groups; and the Citizens Advice Bureau. Public representatives, namely, Declan Hurley, Christopher O’Sullivan, Pat Murphy, Donnchadh Ó Seaghdha and Karen Coakley, Mayor of Skibbereen Town Council, were also in attendance. The chairman of the West Cork Rural Garda Station Retention Campaign, Con McCarthy, addressed the meeting

The Last Word

Wallis return is ruled out BY KIERAN MCCARTHY MIDELTON’S Jerry Wallis will not be making a third return to the Antrim senior hurling setup. A bizarre twist in an already unusual case saw Wallis (pictured), over the weekend, depart the scene in Antrim for the second time in June, this time leaving as a selector having resigned as manager earlier in the month. A well-placed Antrim County Board source confirmed the latest development to The Southern Star on Wednesday: ‘Jerry is no longer part of the senior management team, and he won’t be making another return. It just didn’t work out.’ Wallis, who was in his first year involved with Antrim, resigned as manager in early June after just six months in the job, after the Saffrons lost a Leinster SHC tie with Westmeath as well as Wallis’ row with RTÉ. But after the Ulster county appointed Jim Nelson as their new senior hurling manager, Wallis was in attendance for an Antrim challenge game, when they lost to Wexford in Dublin, and soon after the Antrim County Board revealed that Wallis was back on board as a selector. However, it was evident very early on in this new set-up that it wasn’t going to work, so the best solution for all parties involved saw Wallis part ways with Antrim, again.

Fishing

There’s a wide variety of locations and types of fishing in and around Skibbereen and the surrounding district, too many for these pages. However, here are three suggestions:

3

Failte Ireland has Skibbereen listed as one of the ‘top 3 cycle hub towns’ in Ireland. Bike hire and cycle maps are available in the town centre and there are a range of local cycle routes for all skill levels, with many of them off the main roads and taking in some stunning coastal and countryside scenery.

4

Are you the creative type?

Why not visit the West Cork Art Centre, in Skibbereen, a focus for many of the artists, craftspeople and writers who have made West Cork their home over the years.

Shepperton Lakes

Mackerel fishing

– great fun for young and old alike when the tide is in and the fish are around, check out Glandore Pier, Union Hall Pier or Sandy Cove (off the rocks on the road between Castletownshend and Sandy Cove beach). is a medium sized spate river about 21 miles (33kms) long and flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in West Cork. A large part of the river is managed by the River Ilen Anglers’ Club based in Skibbereen. The season for salmon and sea trout opens on February 15th and closes on September 30th for salmon and on October 12th for sea trout.

Famine graveyards at Abbeystrewry

- the Skibbereen area was one of the worst affected by the Great Famine of 1845-1852. The mass graves of between 8,000 and 10,000 famine victims at Abbeystrewry near Skibbereen are testament to the tragic consequences of the catastrophic failure of the potato crop in the area during the 1840s. Across Ireland (particularly the west of Ireland) it is estimated around one million people died as a result of the famine and thousands more emigrated.

Among the things to do at Lough Hyne, there is a nature trail walk up Knockomagh Hill, which overlooks the lake. This spectacular walk (which will get the heart pumping) takes approximately one hour and offers spectacular views of the coastline of West Cork and the surrounding islands.

’s e is Ireland Lough Hyn e reserve first Marin ust-see ’! and is a ‘m

5

Lough Hyne

- first discovered by marine biologists in 1886 is a truly magical place and should be a ‘must-see’ on any visitor’s list. Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve nestles in a fold of hills 5km south west of Skibbereen, off the Baltimore Road. This marine lake is fed from the sea by a narrow tidal channel known as ‘The Rapids’ and is home to a rich and varied range of plants and animals. We would highly recommend visiting

A day at the beach!

Two favourites with locals are Tragumna beach, a blue flag beach and Tralispean (the latter being a tricky one to find so you will need to ask for directions). Both beaches are safe and child friendly with Tragumna having a pub nearby and Tralispean a great place to have a picnic . Further afield is Barleycove which is one of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches with lovely golden sand and safe for bathing. There is also a surf school located here. Head towards Goleen and then towards Crookhaven before which you’ll see good signposting for Barleycove.

Skibbereen Heritage Centre

before going to Lough Hyne where an excellent audio-visual documentary is shown on the history, formation and folklore of the lake, plus underwater footage showing some of the plant and animal life to be found. Adults and kids alike will find this fascinating.

6

Skibbereen Heritage Centre

– as well as the Lough Hyne exhibition, the Heritage Centre is well worth a visit. Located in the award winning, beautifully restored old gasworks building, the centre also houses: l The Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition which commemorates the tragic period in the 1840s that is known in Irish history as the Great Hunger. Skibbereen, along with many areas of the west, was very badly affected losing up to a third of its population to hunger, disease and emigration l An archaeology trail of the Skibbereen area l Genealogy services. Online at www.skibbheritage.com, you will also find fully searchable databases, which include a Graveyard Survey, Loan Fund Records , Tithe Applotment Books, Estate Records and a Townlands Database.

9

Skibbereen Farmers’ Market which is held every Saturday morning in the town centre (Fairfield car park) is a real delight where you can purchase local produce such as fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, herbs, freshly baked breads and pastries, cheeses, honeys and jams as well as a whole range of craft products as well.

10

The Sky Garden at Liss Ard House & Gardens

has to be seen to be believed – just lie back and watch the clouds drift by! This James Turrell creation can be found within this magical estate of country manors, gardens, walking trails, ponds and lakes . A lso, a great place for a walk.

BALTIMORE Baltimore is slightly off the main tourist trail and is located around 13km SW of Skibbereen. A lively coastal village, there’s a range of accommodation including hotels, guesthouses and hostel plus a variety of places to eat and drink. A convenience store, church and swimming pool can be found here and across its natural harbour lie Carbery’s Hundred Isles, including the islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin and Heir which are just a short ferry ride away from Baltimore pier.

– the West Cork seas around this area attract a diversity of wildlife including minke, fin and humpback whales, common dolphins and harbour porpoises. Occasional sightings of killer whales occur, whilst Atlantic white sided dolphins, common and grey seals can be seen year round. Plus turtles, blue sharks, and basking sharks. Trips last around four hours and depart from the harbour/pier.

Aha me hearties!

Visit the Pirate Exhibition at Dún na Séad castle which was the stronghold of a piratical family for hundreds of years. Baltimore is famous for a raid in 1631 when Barbary pirates from North Africa took most of the villagers and sold them into slavery, but the exhibition reveals how the village had a very different history of piracy prior to that raid. From as early as the 13th century, the local rulers and residents of the castle, the O’Driscolls, engaged in piracy by attacking passing vessels. The exhibition is open daily from 11am – 6 pm daily. Also, don’t miss the town’s annual Pirate Festival in June.

Just watch the world go by (on land and at sea)

Sometimes on a nice summer’s day it can be a pleasure just to sit in the square and do absolutely nothing (except maybe enjoy a drop of the black stuff or a glass of wine). As you look out you’ll see yachts sailing in the bay, fishing boats returning, ferries going to and from the islands, children swimming in the harbour and sometimes even seals swimming between the piers. If you’re lucky a ‘trad band’ might even strike up as well!

Beacon walk

There is a fairly long walk which takes you around The Cove and up the winding road to The Beacon. Beacons and signal towers were erected all around the Irish coast by the British in the early 19th Century when they feared a European invasion. After the climb up to the Beacon please be careful as there can be very strong winds. However the climb is well worthwhile as the views over to Sherkin Island and out to sea are magnificent.

Ballydehob, or Béal an Dá Chab, meaning “mouth of the two river fords”, is a coastal village and can be located by following the N71 west from Skibbereen (approx 16km) Here you’ll find an array of places to eat and drink plus some interesting shops. There are stunning views of the islands of Roaring Water Bay on the drive to Ballydehob. To see what’s going on in Ballydehob visit www.southernstar.ie/Community/ Ballydehob-Schull-Goleen Danno O’Mahony

is probably the village’s most famous son and was a wrestler who famously won the NWA World title in Boston on 30 June 1935.With an incredible physique and huge strength Danno was known as the “Irish Whip” in celebration of his famous throwing technique (one of the village’s many pubs still bears that name.)He died in a tragic road accident in 1950. Be sure to visit the bronze statue erected in Danno’s honour in 2000 in the centre of the village.

21

Walk over the Viaduct

As you enter Ballydehob, you see to your left a spectacular 12-arch stone viaduct which is a relic of the West Carbery tramway and light railway. It was part of a narrow-gauge railway line that ran from Skibbereen to Schull. The line was opened in September 1886, but it never really made a profit and it was finally closed in December 1945.

Take a step back in time at Levis pub

As a rule we haven’t singled out individual pubs or bars in this guide, however we’ve broken that rule in the case of Levis. The Levis sisters ran this 150-year-old bar and grocery store for as long as anyone can remember. Both have now sadly passed away but the pub continues to welcome visitors and it has had some famous ones over the years judging by the photos on the wall). It really is a snapshot of a bygone Ireland when life was a little slower.

25

Schull (pronounced Skull) is a good

-sized village located approximately 7km west of Ballydehob. The village is situated in the shadow of nearby Mount Gabriel (407 m) and is a lively place particularly in the summer months as holidaymakers and visiting yachting crews arrive. With a wide range of places to stay, eat and drink it also has a sheltered harbour, a good range of s hops and a church. Calves Week

– if you’re a sailing enthusiast or just a keen observer then you’ll love the buzz of Calves Week. From its inception in 1884, Schull regatta was held in the middle of August, the big attraction being the fierce rivalry and epic battles between the local fleet of fishing yawls and the visitors from Baltimore, Sherkin, Cape Clear and Crookhaven. Today the competitors treat each other with a little more respect but the rivalry is still as fierce (Aug 6th to 9th).

Glandore is sometimes referred to

as one of Ireland’s prettiest seaside villages. Turn off the N71 in Leap and follow the road alongside the estuary (for around 4km). The village looks out to sea and across to Union Hall and has three pubs, a hotel and bar and safe harbour for boating and general messing around in the water

33

Relax, you’re in Glandore!

If the sun is shining then Glandore is an ideal place to sit awhile and enjoy a pint or glass of wine whilst looking out over the picturesque bay. The pubs here serve up some great food as well Glandore Regatta : July 20/21st.

34

Drombeg Stone Circle

- located 2.5 km east of Glandore, is one of the most visited megalithic sites in Ireland and well worth a visit. Of the 17 original stone pillars 13 remain standing and there are also the remains of two stone-built prehistoric huts.

Union Hall the setting for the film

‘War of the Buttons’ is just across the water from Glandore. Turn off the N71 in Leap and follow the signs which will lead you across the unique one-lane bridge over the estuary. Here you will find a useful convenience store, a cafe and several pubs, some of which serve food. A commercial fishing fleet operates out of Union Hall and you can buy fresh fish in the village. There is also a Catholic church and a playground

35

Find the Fairy Houses in Rineen Woods

– that’s right there are fairies living in these woods! This walk is a true delight for young children (and also for grown ups). Park the car overlooking the estuary, walk down into the woods along the main track and when you reach a right turn walk down it towards the water. As you walk alongside the water’s edge keep your eyes peeled for fairy houses along the way!

WHALE WATCH TRIPS are of four hours’ duration.

Ceim Hill Museum

probably the quaintest museum in the world. The farmhouse at Ceim Hill is centuries old and built in the style of many old dwellings in Ireland. Among the impressive collection are artefacts from the Megalithic and Neolithic Stone Ages and from both the Bronze and Iron Ages. There are also old Irish farming implements as well as examples of locally produced cloth such as lace and linen. There was much fighting in Cork from 1919-1921 and for history enthusiasts there is a War Of Independence exhibit.

Located 5 miles from Goleen, the Mizen Head Signal Station was built to save lives off the treacherous rocks at Ireland’s most south-westerly point. An award winning Maritime Museum and Heritage Attraction, this authentic all-weather experience is a must-see with its spectacular location on high cliffs overlooking swirling Atlantic Ocean tides. From the car park and visitor centre, the Signal Station is a ten minute walk along the path, down the 99 steps and across the Arched Bridge The Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, Ireland’s Teardrop, is visible from here (on a clear day) and was the last landfall seen by many emigrants to America and one of Marconi’s first telegraph stations. There is also a cafe here so you’re able to feed the kids. A good day out for all packed with amazing views, interactive exhibits and the history of cross atlantic telecommunications.

There are a variety of different dives to try around these waters including shore dives and some very interesting wreck dives to suit all levels.

Visit Cape, Sherkin or Heir island

Any trip to this part of the world isn’t complete without taking a trip to one or more of the beautiful, inhabited islands off the coast. The Irish speaking (Gaeltacht) island of Cape Clear, population around 130, is the most southerly inhabited land in Ireland. There is a wonderful ‘Storytelling Festival’ (Sept) held annully on Cape Clear Sherkin island is home to a historic Franciscan Friary and the ruins of an O’Driscoll clan castle, both of which date back to the 14th century. It has some lovely beaches (including Silver Strand) as well as a hotel and a pub. Heir Island has a population of around 20 and also enjoys some lovely sandy beaches as well as a restaurant, cookery school and baking school. Ferries run regularly through the summer from Baltimore pier, Cunnamore pier and from Schull harbour. Check timetables.

40

Get hooked... with some deep sea fishing

Charter boats and fishing trips run out of Union Hall, Baltimore and Schull. As the seas around this areas are warmed by the Gulf Stream a wide variety of game fish are to be found including cod, skate, pollack, blue shark, tuna, bass and many more. Don’t miss the Deep Sea Angling Festival in Baltimore, 22nd Aug to 25 August.

See a ‘Road Bowling’ match

Road bowling is played mostly in Armagh and County Cork, particularly West Cork in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a predetermined course of country roads. Big crowds of spectators often line the roads to watch, bet on the outcome and proffer advice to their favoured competitor in the course of a match or “score”. To find out whether a match is planned nearby ask locally or visit www.southernstar.ie/sport.

49

Visit an old time Threshing festival

Old time threshing days and vintage fairs can be found throughout West Cork across the summer months. They celebrate the historic traditions of rural Ireland and rural life at harvest time. You’ll find old tractors and machinery, often beautifully maintained and restored are on show as well as other attractions for the family and kids. See Southern Star newspaper for details.

Take a drive, marvel at our scenery

Our final suggestion is to simply jump in your car on a nice sunny day and enjoy the views, especially if you take the coastal roads wherever possible. Here’s a suggested route : Leap, Glandore, Union Hall, Castletownshend, Toe Head, Tragumna, Lough Hyne, Baltimore, Skibbereen, Ballydehob., Schull, Goleen and Mizen Head You could even split this route over two days...
