HOW CAN YOU BUY KILLARNEY? Legendary tenor Joseph Locke frequently put the poser in song but, of course, the simple answer is that you just couldn’t put a price on a place many consider the most beautiful in the world. Killarney... Beauty’s Home... Heaven’s Reflex... call it what you will but it will always be the jewel in Ireland’s tourism crown, a town fabled in song, story and verse that has drawn gasps of sheer admiration from millions of visitors down through the generations. But Killarney, of course, is about much more than natural beauty. A bustling shopping town, a culinary capital with a rousing pub and entertainment scene and a very unique atmosphere that sets it apart, it’s no wonder that it is officially ranked Ireland’s top visitor destination and one of the Top 25 must-visit locations in Europe.

Killarney is really and truly a golfer’s playground with a variety of challenging and beautiful attractions to spoil enthusiasts but the two championship courses at the local golf and fishing club are among the very best in the country. The pristine but testing Killeen course has hosted the prestigious Irish Open on no less than four occasions (1991/92, 2010/11) and the adjacent 18-hole Mahony’s Point is a real favourite with locals and thousands of visitors every year. Then there’s the 16-hole Lackabane, 18 holes at Beaufort Golf Club and the 9-hole courses at the Castlerosse and the Ross Golf Club. Spoilt for choice? You bet you are.

Festival mania

Killarney will play host to a feast of festivals this Summer with several high-profile, top quality entertainment events on the menu to ensure visitors and locals, of all ages, are well catered for. Highlights will include the Killarney Festival of Music and Food in June, the colourful, Fourth of July festival and the Killarney FolkFest in late July. To add to the excitement, three horseracing festivals are planned, the Ireland BikeFest will roar into life on May 29-June 1, the Killarney BeerFest will take place in June as will the midsummer Killarney Walking Festival. See the What’s On guide on P13.

Playing around

Magnet of Muckross

It’s far and away the biggest single visitor magnet in Killarney – and it’s easy to see why. The main feature is a 19th century Victorian mansion, visited by Queen Victoria in 1861, and daily tours of the elegantly furnished, stately home are hugely popular. The surrounding gardens are renowned for their beauty and the House is also home to a number of skilled weavers, bookbinders and potters setting about their daily tasks in their workshops.

Down on the farm

No visit to Muckross is complete without spending an hour or three exploring the three traditional working farms where you can step back in time and watch, at close quarters, cows being milked, butter being churned, soda bread being prepared for the oven by the Bean an Tí, turf being saved and chores tended to in the traditional stone cottages. And that’s not all – a 1910 style schoolhouse offers a great glimpse to another era and there’s a great petting farm to keep children amused.

Three in one deal

So where, exactly, are the lakes? It’s one of the most frequent questions asked by visitors but the answer is not so simple. The fact is they’re everywhere. Killarney is surrounded by three spectacular attractions – the Upper Lake, Lower Lake (Lough Lein) and Middle Lake (Muckross Lake) – and access can be gained from several areas. The best viewing point is where the three lakes converge – the Meeting of the Waters – which is a 15-minute walk or a short cycle from the historic Dinis Cottage.

7

“The Gap Trip” is one of those experiences everyone should have on their bucket list of things to do before they die. It involves a bus, boat and pony and trap trip through the very heart of Killarney’s beautiful landscape. Guests will be escorted by expert guides through the stunning Gap of Dunloe after boarding traditional boats at Ross Castle to wind their way through the lakes, passing under Old Weir Bridge at the Meeting of the Waters. Set aside the best part of a day for the experience – it will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

A view for a lady

One of the most incredible panoramic views in the world awaits visitors to Ladies View which boasts an unrivalled vista overlooking the lakes, mountains, islands and woodlands. Located 19km from Killarney town centre, it was named after Queen Victoria’s ladies-inwaiting who were almost left speechless when they stopped to admire the view during the Royal visit in 1861.

9

8

Bridging the Gap

11

The height of beauty

As landmarks go, it’s hard to surpass the imposing and historic 15th century Ross Castle which towers over Killarney’s Lough Lein and is one of the must-visit sites for visitors to Killarney. Once the stronghold of the O’Donoghue Ross chieftains, the ruin offers a fascinating insight to the past. While there, take the short stroll to see the pre-historic coppermines and, if you’re brave enough, check out the dark and mysterious bat cave.

The faint-hearted can enjoy the tranquility of the gently tumbling cascade from the base of Torc Waterfall but those with a little more energy are guaranteed that it would be well worth their while to climb the steps to the top to see the splendour of this extremely popular port of call. The waterfall, located 7km from town, is approximately 20m high and is certainly at its most dramatic after a period of rainfall.

Clip-clop happiness

You just can’t visit Killarney without enjoying a trip on a jaunting car. Taking in the spectacular surroundings, the clip-clop of the horses’ hooves providing the musical accompaniment, it really is a great way to while away an hour or so with colourful jarveys available in the town centre and at Muckross House. Ross Castle and Knockreer are the top destinations in town while a trot around the park awaits in Muckross. And don’t for one moment assume the stories told by the jarveys are tall tales. They are telling the absolute truth. We promise.

12 o

Castles in the air

Pause for thought

Muckross Abbey, a 15th century Franciscan friary within the Muckross demesne, is now in ruins but it is steeped in history. Its location, beside a fabulously located old graveyard, makes it a great place to pause for quiet reflection away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

13

Peak fitness

Killarney offers visitors a golden opportunity to look at the world from the top of the country as it is home to Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohill, which stands at 1,038m. It is part of the legendary MacGillycuddy’s Reeks which encompasses a total of 20km and is in huge demand with climbers and walkers. Other challenging climbs include Beenkeragh (1,110m), Caher (1,001m) and Cnoc na Péiste (988m). For safety reasons, please ensure you let someone know what time you are embarking on the climb and what time you expect to return and make sure you carry a fully-charged mobile phone with you.

Fancy a spot of retail therapy? Then you’ve come to the right place. Killarney is a shopper’s paradise with a super range of fashion houses, gift stores, arts and crafts outlets, art galleries, souvenir stores and shopping centres. One of the great traditions of summertime in Killarney is late night shopping, with visitors enjoying a relaxed after-dinner visit to the town centre outlets, many of which remain open until 10pm or later.

Warm welcome

Killarney is blessed with an incredible selection of five-star and family-friendly hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, hostels and caravan and camping facilities. The hotels love to showcase their facilities and a visit for afternoon tea, a quick lunch, evening dinner or a relaxing drink should be high on the agenda.

The Black Valley

A narrow but awe-inspiring and rugged mountain pass, a short drive, a leisurely cycle or a considerable walk from the town centre, the Gap of Dunloe should be very close to the top of your must-do priority list. Surrounded by mountains and lakes and a real paradise for rock climbing enthusiasts, the 11km trek through the Black Valley starts at Kate Kearney’s Cottage. If you don’t walk or cycle the route, there is no shortage of pony and trap and pony rides available at the cottage. Set most of a day aside for this trip – but don’t go home without doing it.

Killarney is immensely proud of its links with Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, the Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican, who is credited with saving the lives of an estimated 6,500 Jews and prisoners of war in Rome during World War II. Follow the O’Flaherty trail in Killarney, see the house in which he was reared, the school he attended, the street murals in his memory, the road named after him and the striking life-sized bronze statue erected in his honour which is set in a mini plaza with information displays charting his remarkable life and times.

On yer bike

The old reliable bicycle is a great way to see and enjoy Killarney with several established cycle paths to tempt you while the National Park and all other attractions are pedal-power friendly. There are even dedicated paths for cyclists on most of the main roads and there are several renta-bike depots in and around the town, many offering a free guide map.

Living on a prayer

Rising spectacularly into the Killarney skyline, the landmark St Mary’s Cathedral is the stand-out visual feature of Killarney town centre. God’s own skyscraper was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin who was commissioned in 1840 to create the Gothic-style structural masterpiece and the foundation stone was laid two years later, with the tower and spire added some years after that. It is the cathedral of the sprawling Diocese of Kerry and the home church of the Bishop of Kerry.

First is Fossa

Always seeking new ways to improve the overall Killarney holiday experience, an exciting new walking and cycling route, to eventually feature a looped trip around the entire National Park, is currently being developed. The first phase, now complete, is the Fossa Way that winds from St Mary’s Cathedral, through the park and onto the village of Fossa, with astonishing views of the lakes, mountains, woodlands and the local golf courses along the way. Well worth a ramble.

Ride on

If horse riding or pony trekking is your fancy then you won’t be disappointed by what Killarney has to offer. Guided rides through the National Park are available for one, two or three-hour sessions while, at Muckross and the Gap of Dunloe, pony rides are immensely popular.

If your preference is for a short walk that’s not too taxing or strenuous, check out the town centre River Walk in Knockreer where you can stroll at your leisure, alongside the lovely River Deenagh and in the shadows of rows of mature trees. It can lead to Ross Castle – if the mood takes you – or you can simply complete one of the short internal loops that will have you back at the entrance gate faster than you can say ‘How beautiful’.

Saturday, July 4 will be the highlight of the year in Killarney for over 10,000 people that will flock to town to compete in the annual Ring of Kerry charity cycle. Much of the toil involved in the demanding 180km route will fade as soon as participants settle in to chat with their fellow cyclists and enjoy the views and the camaraderie. There will be a real party atmosphere when they arrive back to town later that evening. To make that weekend even more special, the Munster football championship final is scheduled to take place in Killarney the next day.

Well worth seeing

One of Killarney’s hidden secrets is an age-old holy well located in the town centre which is only familiar to an older generation of locals. Located at the rear of the town hall, cures for a variety of ailments have been associated with St Mary’s Well since 1302 and it was originally part of an ancient religious complex, extending to where St Mary’s Church of Ireland now stands. There is an annual tradition of reciting the Rosary at the well on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption.

40

Shooting for stars

With 37 senior titles, Kerry is the home of the most successful footballing county in the history of the GAA so no trip to Killarney should be undertaken without a visit to Fitzgerald Stadium – where all the magic is conjured up. It’s little more than a five-minute leisurely stroll from the town centre and the splendid facilities are well worth seeing. The home grounds of local clubs, Dr Crokes and Legion, are very close by too so, if you’re in luck, you might catch a glimpse of Colm Cooper or James O’Donoghue.

Fun of the fair

No visit to Killarney at the height of the holiday season can be complete without a visit to the town centre funfair which has been part of the local summertime offering for several decades. Test your head for heights on the big wheel, your driving skills in the dodgems or your nerve on one of the white-knuckle rides on site.

42

Laneways to the past

The old laneways in the town centre are well worth a ramble for anyone with even a passing interest in local history or culture. Although most of the buildings have been extensively modernised, many of the original architectural features still remain, with some cobblestone surfaces, solid stonework and feature overhead arches. A leisurely stroll back in time.

Wishing on a legend

Local legend has it that a great monk, by the name of Brother McCudda, dedicated his life to prayer and slept, on his knees, for 200 years in a place of tranquility at Knockeer, wit hin the National Park. Marks clearly visible on a flat flag stone at the site, in a little grove of bluebells, are said to be imp mature trees surrounded by rints of his knees and his chin. It’s within easy walkin wild of town so check locally for g distance directions. And don’t forget to make a wish.

Magic of the streets

Killarney, as the premier tourist destination in the country, is always a magnet for buskers of all abilities...and none...but they create a wonderful Mardi Gras atmosphere on the streets at night. Singers, guitar players, dancers, pipers, stunt men, magicians and downright chancers line the streets and the fun is at its best late in the evening with so many people milling about at their leisure. And feel free to join in.

Top Five Day Trips from Killarney The Ring of Kerry

You shouldn’t spend a weekend in Killarney without touring all or part of the spectacular Ring of Kerry – one of the most iconic scenic day trips in the world. It’s best advised to set aside a full day to give yourself sufficient time to take in and enjoy the sheer, rugged beauty of the circular 180km route which you can drive at your leisure or, if you prefer, board a bus in Killarney for an organised, guided tour. Popular stop-off points along the way include the Blue Flag beaches at Rossbeigh and Derrynane, the picturesque village of Sneem, the historic Staigue Fort, Daniel O’Connell’s historic homestead in Derrynane House, Moll’s Gap and Ladies View.

The Skellig Experience

Made famous, more recently, as one of the locations for the new Star Wars movie, Skellig Michael has a magnet-like lure for those that appreciate history, culture and the sheer beauty of the wilderness. A short boat trip will offer you an up close and personal experience in the shadow of the spectacular rock that rises majestically out of the Atlantic. The Unesco World Heritage Site is part of the Skellig Ring trip and Iveragh Peninsula which is a magnificent looped drive connecting Valentia Island, the fishing village of Portmagee and Ballinskelligs. The Skellig Experience Visitor Centre is also worth a call.

A Day at the Beach

With Killarney as your base, you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a quality beach where you can sunbathe, stroll at your leisure or simply sit and watch the world go by.

Rossbeigh Beach, in Glenbeigh, is a real favourite with locals given that it is a just a short drive away but the breath-taking beach at Inch – where many scenes from the iconic Ryan’s Daughter were filmed – is also very highly recommended. For those that enjoy water sports, a trip to Derrynane or Ballinskelligs might be in line while the small beach at Kells – just off the main Ring of Kerry route – is another great option.

The Gap of Dunloe

A trip through the incredible Gap of Dunloe should be very high on your list of priorities when in Killarney. You can opt to set off on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or on pony and trap but whatever your preferred mode of transport, make sure you don’t miss out. A stunningly unique mountain pass, a very narrow roadway weaves up through the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks The Skelligs. mountains where the incredible geological features were all created by glaciers during the last ice age. Thousands of years ago, when the glaciers melted, they deposited the large rocks they were carrying and these are still clearly visible throughout the Gap.

The Dingle Peninsula

The Dingle Peninsula stretches 48km into the Atlantic from the south-west coast and it is dominated by the Slieve Mish range to Mount Brandon, Ireland’s second highest peak. The breathtaking coastline consists of steep sea-cliffs, sandy beaches, walking routes and sea angling hotspots with a huge number of talented knitters, jewellers, potters, weavers and other craftspersons dotted along the route. The bustling town of Dingle is worth spending an hour or two in and while there you can enjoy a boat trip to see Fungi, one of the world’s most famous and friendliest dolphins.
