Celebrating Our Hometown Heroes

I really enjoy publishing our "Man Issue" each year. August is the one time of year we are able to celebrate (in print) some of the remarkable men who live and work in West Georgia. This issue always causes quite a stir around town! It's interesting to learn more about these valued members of our community, and we are always thrilled to feature some of our wonderful male friends. In This Issue

In the early morning hours of April 12, 2021, City of Carrollton Police Sgt. Rob Holloway's life was changed forever after being wounded in the head by gunfire. Remarkably, Sgt. Holloway survived, but is still recovering from his injuries over a year later. On page 10, learn more about our "Hometown Hero" Fred, with my family. I've known Dr. Fred Richards for 12 years, now. A licensed psychotherapist and hero in his own right, Fred has helped countless people in West Georgia learn how to heal their wounds and live more fulfilled lives. We consider Fred and his wife, Anne, dear members of our family. Fred and Anne, who just celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary last month, work tirelessly to spread peace, joy and hope throughout West Georgia, and we are so incredibly blessed to have them in our community. Fred was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. At the end of his chemotherapy, he will have complete bladder removal surgery. We decided to surprise our precious friend by reaching out on social media and giving the community an opportunity to share their love and support for our "Hometown Healer." The response was incredible (so much so that we had to add an additional eight pages to the magazine!), and I can just see the smile on sweet Fred's face as he reads the hundreds of well wishes from so many who love and adore him! Fred, my hope is that as you go through this challenging journey, you and Anne will feel enveloped in the abundant and everlasting love that we all have for you each and every day. A Carrollton Officer’s Story of Courage, Faith and Perseverance

arrollton Police Sgt. Rob Holloway has spent most of his life protecting and serving others. But on April 12, 2021, Sgt. Holloway was the one who needed to be saved after being shot in the head during a high-speed chase. Thankfully, the 40-year-old husband and father survived. But for anyone who knows Sgt. Holloway, it’s no surprise he made it – he’s a fighter who never gives up. It’s been a long road to recovery. But Sgt. Holloway is happy to be alive to enjoy the life he’s built in Carrollton with his wife, Stephanie, and 19-year-old son, Grady. Sgt. Holloway’s story is a reminder to be prepared for the unexpected. It’s also a reminder of the importance of faith, family and friends. Now he is sharing his story of survival to inspire others. To understand what drives him to share his story, it's important to understand why he chose a career in law enforcement in the first place.

Following a Dream Sgt. Holloway actually didn’t start his career in law enforcement. He started in sales, working for Viking SupplyNet, which sells fire sprinkler systems. He started in the warehouse and worked himself up to a sales position. While he took a job as a salesman, his passion was always law enforcement. This was due in part to growing up in a home where he was exposed to domestic violence and substance abuse. “My dad would beat my mom and was an alcoholic,” he says. “I wanted to go out there and police for that because I knew that was happening in the world.” He was 26 years old when he quit sales. “I said if I don’t quit, I will have a lot of regret in

my life,” he says. With his wife’s support, he applied for the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Carrollton Police Department in 2006. You’re not going to be able to do that here. You’re going to be confined,’” Sgt. Holloway recalls. “I said, ‘Yes sir, I’m sure. I’m completely fine with it.’” At the jail, he quickly moved from being a jailer to a booking officer. While working in the booking area in 2007, he met Carrollton Police Officer Joe Gramling. Officer Gramling learned Rob wanted to be a police officer, and the department hired him shortly after. After graduating from North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy in Austell, he began his career as a patrol officer in 2008. In 2009, he became a traffic officer responding to

minutes. Sgt. Holloway positioned officers and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspects fled. A high-speed chase began northbound on Highway 61. During the chase, the passenger in the suspects’ vehicle grabbed an AK47 and started to fire multiple rounds at officers. Despite being unable to return fire, officers stayed in pursuit and Sgt. Holloway began coordinating with other law enforcement agencies to get the vehicle off the highway. “I remember (Cpl. Wesley) Cheatwood riding behind the car, and we could see somebody moving around in the vehicle,” he recalls. He advised Cpl. Cheatwood to back off so they would have time to react if the suspects started shooting at them. Then everything went black.

A Devastating House Call It was the Monday after spring break, and Stephanie, the assistant principal at Carrollton Upper Elementary School, was getting ready to start her day. She and Sgt. Holloway had just gotten back from a trip. “We had a wonderful time,” she recalls. At about 4:30 in the morning, her alarm went off, and she could hear sirens. “We have a German shepherd, and she doesn’t like loud noises, so she was acting kind of crazy with the sirens going,” she says. “I was trying to get her out to use the restroom, and I didn’t think anything of it.” But she did check her husband’s location online and saw that he had been stationary for five minutes. “I thought he was fine, so I got on the treadmill and started doing my morning workout,” she says. It was around 5 a.m. when Stephanie received a call from Lt. Brad Easterwood, who asked her to come to the door. When she answered the door, she saw Lt. Easterwood and Lt. Greg Falls. And at that moment, she knew something was wrong. “They told me that Rob had been shot,” she says. “They asked if Grady was at home and told me to wake Grady up because they were going to drive the two of us to the hospital.” The news was devastating. “I think we were kind of in shock a little,” she says. “We were praying.” She called her husband’s mom’s best friend and asked her to tell his mom what had happened. Next,

she texted her school’s administrative team and told them she wasn’t coming into the office. “When they picked us up, we didn’t know any of the details,” she says. When they got to the hospital, COVID-19 restrictions prevented Lt. Easterwood, Lt. Falls and Grady from entering Sgt. Holloway’s room. Thankfully, Stephanie could go in and talk to him at around 6:30 a.m.

Beating the Odds “Hey Rob, you’ve been shot in the head. You’re OK. You’re being air-flighted by a helicopter.” That’s what Sgt. Holloway heard when he woke up after blacking out. The next thing he remembers is waking up in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He remembers his wife coming into the room and holding his hand. “He knew my voice, but he couldn’t see me,” Stephanie recalls. “He asked me to hold his hand. All we could do was pray, so we prayed.” She was only there five minutes before they wheeled him away for emergency surgery. According to reports, a 7.62 caliber round penetrated the

Stephanie could be with her husband at Grady from noon to 6 p.m. every day. The city of Carrollton and Mayor Betty Cason paid for her, Grady and Sgt. Holloway’s mom to stay at the Westin Plaza Hotel nearby. “We had so many people supporting us,” she says. “It was incredible.” That support included people from the school system, police department and fire department. “Our community is incredible,” Stepanie says. “I always knew Carrollton was a special place.”

Journaling the Journey On April 13, 2021, which happened to be the Holloways’ wedding anniversary, Stephanie started a CaringBridge online journal to keep the community updated about his condition. She titled the first entry “Happy anniversary, Bae!” and provided the first update on her husband’s condition. Rob is continuously improving and amazing us all … Rob had a great day. He is enjoying the “Chickfil-A sweet tea” the hospital is serving him, but he wishes he had Cran Grape juice. He is answering questions, moving both arms and legs, and still has his huge heart and his goofy sense of humor. On April 15, 2021, Grady’s Honors Night ceremony was held at Carrollton High School. Sgt. Holloway, who was still in the ICU, couldn’t be there, but law enforcement officers from all the local agencies were there to support him. The event was also streamed so he could watch from the hospital. April 15, 2021 Our school system’s superintendent, Grady’s High School Principal, and the High School Administrative Team did a beautiful job organizing the ceremony. They recognized our law enforcement family and made a beautiful tribute to Rob. They asked us to join them on stage for Grady to present his Honor Teacher award, and he gave it to me. I was so surprised and shocked. Receiving an “apple” from a student is the most humbling and rewarding experience for an educator. To receive one from my own son truly was the most fulfilling moment of my entire career.

Two days later, Grady attended his senior prom. Sgt. Holloway was at Grady for two weeks before being transferred to the Shepherd Center’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program on April 26, 2021. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, once Stephanie went into the building with Sgt. Holloway, she couldn’t leave. “It was very isolating while we were there,” she recalls. “Rob could only have one person at Shepherd with him.” On April 28, 2021, Sgt. Holloway was moved from ICU to a room on the second floor for patients with acquired brain injuries (ABIs). It was also the first day he was lifted from the bed into a chair to sit up. On May 25, 2021 – a day before Grady’s 18th birthday, Sgt. Holloway was diagnosed with meningitis and moved to the ICU. Two days later, Grady graduated from high school. May 28, 2021 – Congratulations Class of 2021! Today has been bittersweet for us. We are thrilled to celebrate Grady’s graduation and all of his many accomplishments; however, we are also devastated. We are watching from a hospital room an hour away. We are very thankful for his school’s decision to stream the event live, and we are so grateful for our family and friends who will be there to congratulate him tonight.

And just like that, the Holloways missed another important event they had been looking forward to. “We missed all of Grady’s key events for the end of the senior year in high school, so it was really hard,” Stephanie says. “But we had community members standing in for us.” One of her friends made a life-size picture cutout of Stephanie and Sgt. Holloway and their parents brought it to Grady’s graduation ceremony. “People sent me pictures or videos of Grady getting his diploma that night,” Stephanie says. “It was such a blessing. That’s what helped us make it through.”

A New Normal Senior year is a time of celebration. It’s a time to celebrate the start of a new season in life. And a big part of that is celebrating graduation day with your parents. Unfortunately, Grady’s parents weren’t able to be there. “It was hard not being able to take pictures with them,” he recalls. Not only did he have to adjust to his parents not being there for graduation, but he also had to adjust to life at home without them.

Holloway chimes in. Grady admits he had some help. “I had people constantly checking on me,” he says. “The city, my family, they all helped.” Grady’s friends were also by his side. “I have a buddy, and his parents helped me a few times,” he says. This included inviting him to dinner. Of course, this didn’t happen every night, so he had to learn how to cook. Grady’s parents raised him to be who he is today, and now he gets a chance to return the favor. “He cooks breakfast for me and Stephanie all the time, and it’s delicious,” Sgt. Holloway says. Beyond caring for the house and yard, Grady focused on taking care of himself. “I’m very big into health, fitness and nutrition,” he says. “All last year when they were gone, I really worked on myself – my body and my mind. That’s something I enjoy.”

While Sgt. Holloway was in therapy, they decorated the room. “We went to set it up like a party,” Stephanie says. “We ordered pizza and cupcakes. And Grady had on his graduation cap and gown with all of his honor cords and stole.” After setting everything up, they brought Sgt. Holloway into the room. He was in a wheelchair, but when he saw Grady standing in his graduation gown, honors medallion, honors cords, dual enrollment cords and National Honor Society stole, Sgt. Holloway did something unexpected. He stood up on his own and hugged Grady. “None of us expected him to stand up,” Stephanie says. “They had been working on standing and walking a little during physical therapy. But not him standing on his own without assistance. It was a special moment.”

A Family Reunion In mid-June of 2021, Shepherd eased COVID-19 restrictions and allowed people to visit. “His mom was able to come and stay, so we could swap,” Stephanie says. “They made one exception for Father’s Day and let Grady come into the building.” They wanted to surprise Sgt. “Carrollton PD has been really good to me,” he says. “They still continue to be good to me. The chief (Joel Richards) is very good to me, and I have several friends from the PD who always check on me.” He still goes out to lunch with them from time to time. Lt. Easterwood and Gramling, who are his best friends, also continue to support the family. Stephanie describes them as being like The Three Musketeers. “They’re together all the time,” she says. “Rob is an only child, so they’re like brothers. Throughout the whole year and a half, they’ve been there every step of the way. We’ve been blessed so much through this experience.”

Keeping the Faith If there is one lesson Sgt. Holloway has learned from his experience, it’s never give up. “My faith played a very strong role,” he recalls. “My family played a very strong role. I didn’t want to give up for my family.” He is grateful for all the support he’s received from his family, friends and the community. He also has a message for anyone who might find themselves in a

similar situation. “What’s important is our faith and having a good support system,” he says. He also believes it’s important to share your faith with others. “I got saved in 1996, and I’ve relied on God the whole time,” he says. “Why not share what God has done for me? I want to help lead people to Christ.” Sgt. Holloway and Stephanie have been asked several times to share their faith and talk about what happened. Sgt. Holloway has shared his story at 15 churches and the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office. He also spoke to a class of graduating officers at a police academy, did an interview on a local radio station and appeared on the Street Cop Training podcast twice. Stephanie created a website at www.holloway229. com to chronicle her husband’s journey. The website includes a timeline of everyone who supported the Holloways. “So much has been given, it’s hard to list everything,” Sgt. Holloway says. The Holloways are blown away by the support they’ve received, both emotionally and financially. They are also grateful for all the prayers lifted on their behalf. “Our community rallied around our family,” she says. “I’ll be forever grateful for the community’s support and the prayers that went up for us because we wouldn’t have made it without that prayer and support.” One lesson Stephanie has learned over the past year and a half is to celebrate every moment. “Take the time to love on your family while they’re there,” she says. “Your work will be there tomorrow. Your housework and yard work will all be there tomorrow.” So, what’s next for Sgt. Holloway? “I wouldn’t mind working in training,” he says. “But I’m limited on what I can do there physically.” He also wants to continue speaking at police academies and telling his story to people. “It’s not for the glory of me,” he says. “It’s for the glory of God. He saved me that night, and he can save other people.” WGW

The Carrollton community shares Dr. Fred Richards' impact on their lives

rs. Fred and Anne Richards have been staunch supporters of West Georgia Woman magazine since its inception in 2015. Fred and Anne are well respected and beloved members of the Carrollton community. Fred was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and had surgery at Northside Hospital for the removal of a tumor from his bladder on May 23. Although they had hoped the tumor removal would be all that was needed, he and his wife Anne found out the cancer had spread to the wall of his bladder. Fred is currently undergoing chemotherapy. At the end of his chemotherapy, Fred will have complete bladder removal surgery, which will take place at Northside Hospital. Fred and Anne have been through a lot the last couple of months, but Fred, who is a psychotherapist and life coach, is

still seeing clients on a limited basis. He is determined to remain positive no matter what life throws at him. Last month, I received an article about Fred from Ashlyn Ninesling. After reading the article, I knew there were probably many others in the Carrollton community who would want to share their messages of love and support for him. After sharing a social media post about our plans to surprise Fred with well wishes from the community, and reaching out to Anne to email others who may be interested in submitting, we received hundreds of submissions within only a few days! So many, that we had to add an additional eight pages to this issue. Unfortunately, that still wasn't enough, and we were unable to publish all the comments that were submitted on other social media pages that shared our post. If your

submission didn't make it in this issue, we will still make sure Fred sees every one. If you weren't able to submit your well wishes by the deadline on social media, or if you don't use social media and would like to reach out to Fred, I encourage you to send a handwritten note or card to the address at the end of this article. Thank you for taking time out of your day to submit your loving thoughts and prayers for Fred. Fred, my dear, precious friend, mentor and loving father figure, you changed my life. From Carrollton With Love “Your eyes … they show me humility and vulnerability. They could tell me a thousand stories and that would not even scratch the surface of you.” Those are the first words that Fred Richards ever said to me. I was working two jobs at the time and in school full-time. I felt the lowest I ever had in my life and had no will power to keep pushing forward. I was lost in the world, depressed, dealing with undiagnosed mental illnesses, and felt like there was no light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Fred came to me and showed me love and acceptance. A few conversations down the road, with some laughs, led us into a pool of friendship. Fred’s influence shaped my future. I continued to push through school and decided to major in psychology. This will was continuously pursued into a doctorate, because I found my meaning, my passion. Our meetings, phone calls, handwritten letters, always leave me beaming, even to this day. He saw me for who I was and for who I am still. I think of him as a guardian angel because he came to me when I needed the kindness that he showed. At the bright age of 83, Fred is still practicing at his office in Carrollton, Ga. For nearly 50 years, this wonderful human has been serving the community through therapy, volunteer work, writing for this magazine, philanthropy, art, the list could go on, and

it does! Fred and his beloved wife, Anne C. Richards, have been a pillar in the West Georgia area for many years, even at the University of West Georgia, where Anne served as faculty. From his morning latté at Gallery Row to his afternoon sessions on Tanner Street, and his evening appearances around the town, Fred never stops spreading love and kindness to everyone he comes across. He did not come up from a childhood that taught him how to be selfless and loving in the way that he expresses now. In his 2018 article in West Georgia Woman, he explained his childhood, his grief, his happiness, his humility, his trauma. Along with the lessons of this article, one part stuck out most to me, “The past is present. We are often haunted and sometimes tormented by the ghosts of experiences too painful to fully recall. What we deny or ignore, what we are afraid to befriend within us and share, shows up again and again in our troubled relationships and self-defeating behaviors. An old bumper sticker of mine said, ‘What we run from runs our lives; what we face frees us to live.’” From a psychology standpoint, this is true. To be set free and to live a life worth living, we must dig deep within ourselves to heal and be free. Fred

was able to do just that. The lessons he discussed boldness, hard work and every other positive throughout the article are: descriptor this universe has to offer. I have known and loved Fred Richards for many years … actually before I ever met him! Forty-five years ago Fred’s mother would babysit for my two sons. She also cared and nurtured many other children in our community. Every Sunday she was in charge of the nursery at Carrollton Presbyterian Church. She was so proud of Fred and his achievements. I’m sure Fred inherited some of his love and caring characteristics from his mother. On another level, I hold a deep appreciation for Fred and the support he has given to the Carroll County Child Advocacy Center which celebrates a significant milestone of 10 years. Butterfly Garden Materials Bowtie noodles Green construction paper Paint, assorted colors Paintbrush Hot glue gun Glue sticks Instructions Paint bowtie noodles that will be used for the butterflies using assorted colors. Paint seven of the bowtie noodles green for the grass – or however many you need to cover the bottom of the construction paper.

Allow to dry. Using the hot glue gun, glue the green bowtie noodles to the bottom of the piece of construction paper. Glue the assorted butterflies as desired. Using the paint and paintbrush, dot the paper underneath the butterflies in a whimsical fashion.

Materials

1 piece of white construction paper 1 piece of green construction paper 2 pink or red cupcake liners Scissors Black marker Hot glue gun Glue sticks Instructions Cut a piece of the green construction paper to resemble the shape of a leaf.

Cut a piece of the white construction paper into a 4-by-4 inch strip. In the center of the strip, draw seeds as shown in photo. Wrap the strip around itself in a cylindrical shape and glue in place. Glue each end of the cylinder to the inside of a cupcake liner. Glue the narrow end of the leaf to the top of the apple. WGW
