WHAT IS GRADING?

The Recreational Gymnastics program has been designed to teach young aspiring gymnasts the fundamental skills for Gymnastics. These fundamental skills taught within the program help support gymnasts in preparation for greater skill development or if they wish to move into a competitive program at SGAC. The grading process has been re-designed to teach SGAC recreational athletes the progression skills and fundamental skills in gymnastics across all competitive disciplines that are held at SGAC, including:
• Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG)
• Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG)
• Acrobatics (ACRO)
• Trampolining (TRP)
• Team Gym (TG)
Over the course of the year we ensure we teach a wide range of skills in the recreational space so students can receive wellrounded exposure and knowledge on the disciplines, techniques and apparatus below:
Acrobatic Floor Handstand Bars Trampoline
Vault Parallel bars Strength Flexibility Synchro mini trampoline
Beams Double mini trampoline
Each term the recreational athletes will focus on fundamental skills on each apparatus listed on the lesson plan. They will focus on 6 skills on each apparatus within a 2-week period. The following two weeks the athletes will be given the opportunity to master these 6 skills. The fifth week the athletes will be assessed on these 6 skills. The process will then start again, that means every 5 weeks they will be assessed on 6 new skills.
In Summary:
Week 1 - Learn
Week 2 - Learn
Week 3 - Refine
Week 4 - Refine
Week 5 – Test
Within a year, the athletes will have the opportunity to learn 48 core fundamental/ progression skills across the apparatus above. This allows a clear pathway and opportunity for your child to move to the next level.
Your child will also be assessed on their behavioural skills - such as listening, following instructions, self-confidence and sportsmanship. Below is an example of progression skills that lead into a fundamental skill - Handstand

When your child achieves a progression skill during grading, the skill will be marked "Attained" on your child's profile. This information can be located and viewed on the member portal. Once your child achieves all 48 progression skills set for them in their current program, they will be eligible to move up to a new level. Grading FAQ’s
How many times can a skill be attempted?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240722223704-5d1048ad406096178e0fe054c1ae6818/v1/367c21ff8d77d5351d4f10be6cc0a3e4.jpeg)
A student who believes they can do better than their previous attempt can ask to try again, and we will give them that opportunity, unless the coach assesses that the individual needs to spend more time training and improving their underlying skills before they will reach the required standard.
What happens if grading is on a public holiday or closure date?
The grading will be postponed and rescheduled in a more appropriate week and we will communicate this to all members.
What happens if my child is absent on grading day?
If your child is absent on grading weeks then we will still monitor their progress and consider their development. Your child’s progressed is being monitored each week/class by our coaches, as well as through the internal Recreational GymSport Competition and talent ID team amongst our competitive coaches. Formal grading classes are not the only way to progress.
If you would like your child assessed for a competitive program, please visit the SGAC website and submit your enquiry under the competitive discipline of interest here.
What is the Recreation GymSport Competition?
It is an inhouse competition that allows your child to compete against other SGAC recreational gymnasts who are in the same program and at the same level. It will give your child the opportunity to showcase the skills they have learnt within the program in a safe and fun environment.
In-between grading weeks the athletes will learn routines using the skills they have practiced throughout the year in preparation for the GymSport competition. All athletes who take part will receive a participation medal and overall placings in each level will be announced.
It is important that all athletes attend this competition regardless of how long they have been in the gymnastics program. The coaches will be right by your child’s side when they perform their routines and will support them one on one. The coaches will also be there to encourage and call out the next skill in the routine should the athlete forget “in the moment”. Coaches will also spot/assist any child not yet capable of completing a skill on their own.
