In designing West HQ’s Sydney Coliseum Theatre appointed Cox Architecture to bring to life our vision of an iconic, unique, landmark building in Greater Western Sydney, and all of Australia.
Led by Design Director Tim Morgan, Project Architect Nuraishikin Salleh and Interior Designer Brooke Lloyd, the team at Cox Architecture took inspiration from the freedom of movement in arts and music to create Sydney’s next great theatre.
The unique curvaceous exterior of Sydney Coliseum Theatre presents you with glimpses of the building from various approaches exposing only snippets of what it is and what is within.
The flowing façade metaphorically references the theatre curtain drawn across the set that will be revealed once inside. The slot windows allow patrons and public to peak in, whetting their appetites for what awaits them behind the curtain.
The beauty of the building is discovered as you view it from various angles and amplifies the anticipation of the theatrical experience, intended to be an experience that begins before you walk through the doors.
The theatre’s statement entry, the Grand Staircase, is the visual connection between the 3 level foyer and is inspired by the romance and golden ages of theatre. The serpentine curves gently reveal and eventually wrap around the main bar within the ground foyer whilst also becoming an anchor to the chandelier that hangs above.
The bespoke chandelier created by Cox and engineered and built by Australian manufacturer Yellow Goat, represents the magical moment when a performance begins, and celebrates the many starring moments that the Sydney Coliseum stage will present. Revealing different lighted perspectives from every angle, the chandelier is simultaneously both a dramatic and inspiring celebration of the theatre’s many future personalities and performances and of the audiences who will be entertained within her walls.
Thousands of crystals suspended by over 240 individual strands have been designed to appear as if they’ve been frozen in mid-air, capturing a special moment forever, and the feeling of anticipation, elation, and wonder seen in a star filled night sky.
The Crystal Bridge is an important architectural feature, created to be a doorway and “curtain” to slowly reveal the magnificent foyer ahead. The floor to ceiling glass walls create a brilliant site both for those walking across it and outsiders looking in from the street.
The crescendo to this unique space is the LED screen-lined floor that provides moments of colour and excitement for the performance to come.
Interior Designer Brooke Lloyd has sought to heighten the emotional journey of the building with materials that begin with a light pallet of dark grey terrazzo tiles within the foyers and transcend into a very dark, inky palette within the auditorium which allows the audience to be drawn into the magic of the stage.
The blackbutt timber panelling that lines the curved walls of the auditorium is another device used to drive all focus towards the entertainment on the stage.
The truly spectacular design of Sydney Coliseum Theatre required a spectacularly talented team of builders and specialist trades to bring the vision to life. Construction partner Hansen Yuncken first broke ground in October 2017 navigating the challenges that only a design comprising of hundreds of complex curves could bring.
With over a century in operation, a Master Builder’s Association NSW Award for site safety under their belt and past projects including 50 Flinders Street in Melbourne and the New Royal Adelaide Hospital, Hansen Yuncken came well equipped to lead our ambitious project.
Led by Project Manager Vanja Krumpacnik, the team employed market leading technology practises such as Drone visual capture and 4D sequencing to not only construct the venue, but do so with the highest of safety standards.
“As the years have gone by, we’ve grown to take on bigger and more complex projects,” he explains. “We’re trying to be a leader in the construction sector by using new technologies which allows us to provide transparency to our stakeholders, clients and consultants regarding quality and safety processes on site. We also have a rich history; we’ve been around for 100 years and whilst we’re changing with the times in terms of techniques and technologies, our core principles and values have stayed the same.”
Drone footage was pivotal in capturing:
– Visual confirmation to both consultants and subcontractors requiring critical information for final designs and shop drawings
– Visual Inspections from heights of the fly tower and roof steel, linkbridge connecting the eastern foyer of West HQ with the entrance to Sydney Coliseum Theatre
– Concrete pours and reinforcement placement.
The obvious benefit of such technology is the elimination, where possible, of visual inspections conducted at heights and thus, removing workers from high risk activity.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the West HQ team to deliver this world class project. It’s been a privilege to have such a knowledgeable, engaging and collaborative client – it’s been an incredibly rewarding process.”

Creating a world class theatrical venue from the ground up has provided West HQ with a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of venue design and theatre technology.
With a goal to deliver a theatrical soundscape and a performance experience at a new standard, West HQ appointed theatre tech leaders L’Acoustics and Jands to supply the first permanent L-ISA Hyperreal theatre installation in the Southern Hemisphere.
The “hyperreal” frontal scene sound system includes a 65 speaker system that heightens a sense of proximity and connection between artist and audience creating a multi-dimensional sound experience.
L-ISA technology offers a new way to design, process, mix, and experience multidimensional sound that overcomes the pitfalls of audio radiating from the “wrong” location.
Accurate localization of sound sources brings a vibrancy and immediacy that until now has been lacking in live amplified audio. L-ISA matches what audiences hear to what they see, giving listeners the sonic equivalent of direct eye contact: sound that is extremely clear, natural, and highly intelligible, ultimately creating a direct and deeper connection between performer and spectator.
From symphony to rock and all genres in between we can’t wait to immerse our guests in a next-level sound experience at Sydney Coliseum Theatre.
In designing Sydney Coliseum Theatre, another very unique challenge was set – how do we create Sydney’s next great theatre, but also deliver a multi-function venue capable of both world-class artistic performances and major corporate events?
Embracing this challenge, the architectural and design teams set out to create a fully retractable seating system that could present as a premium grade lyric theatre. The brief sought for Sydney Coliseum’s seating to be versatile, multi-mode, stylish in its presentation, impeccably manufactured, efficient to operate and provide a level of patron comfort in keeping with the theatre’s premium experience goals.
The final seating contract was awarded to Belgium’s Jezet Seating, in collaboration with their Australian partner K-5. Having previously designed and produced the impressive 2,360 seat, fully-retractable systems within the Grinn Centre, Russia, and award-winning platforms for the Le Theatre National Belgium, AFAS Live Netherlands and Whitney Museum New York, Jezet came well equipped to meet the Sydney Coliseum Theatre’s requirements.
Premium black fabric, custom specified seating foam, timber hand rests and brass detailing were chosen in keeping with the dark and intimate interior of Sydney Coliseum’s main auditorium. The final seats were designed to be comfortable for any length of performance, stylish, sleek and minimalistic whilst delivering on the flexible technology-first design mandate.
But it is what sits below the 1,000 retractable and removable seats that sets them apart. The precision engineered Jezet system enables the three stall seating banks to retract on laser guided rollers in less than 5 minutes per bank. The venue’s entire stalls seating area can be transformed from a premium lyric theatre to a spacious open floored area for conferences, corporate functions or standing rock concerts in less than 90 minutes. It is this feature that makes the Sydney Coliseum Theatre one of the most versatile of its kind in the world.
Throughout the project, Jezet & K-5 have shown their impressive capability in all areas – design engineering, manufacture, installation and commissioning.
Ultimately, in any theatre, the proof is in the performance. We invite all our guests to “take your seats” for what we consider will be one of the best and most innovative theatrical experiences in the southern hemisphere. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
