As you step into Level 1 you will receive your first glimpse of the stunning, grand staircase as its descends into the main foyer. Surrounded by huge floor-to-ceiling glass panels, the venue’s foyers are flooded with natural light that dances across Terrazzo lined floors, marble benchtops and accents of blackbutt timber panelling. Intentionally designed to be a main focal point of the Sydney Coliseum Theatre is the main bar located on the ground floor foyer. Framed by the curvature of the staircase, the circular bar is a true moment, featuring a spectacular LED chandelier overhead which washes the room with vivid colour. Designed thoughtfully by the award-winning team at Cox Architecture, the venue features luxurious glazed ‘nooks’ jutting out along the exterior of the building. TIM MORGAN, DESIGN DIRECTOR, COX ARCHITECTURE TALKS DESIGN HAVE THERE BEEN ANY FIRSTS FOR COX IN THE DESIGN OF THIS VENUE?

This venue will be the biggest performing arts venue that we have designed and built, holding 2,000 patrons. It is also a building that has been created, simply as a veil or curtain wrapping an operationally functional venue that heightens the curiosity and intrigue to see what’s inside. The foyer has pushed the structural design to its limits giving the illusion of the stair and balconies floating. To be a part of conceiving a building that is a celebration of the culture of Western Sydney is so exciting. We are honoured to be involved in the creation of Sydney’s newest world class Sydney Coliseum Theatre.

STRIKING ARCHITECTURE AND EXQUISITE INTERIORS

NURAISHIKIN SALLEH, PROJECT ARCHITECT, COX ARCHITECTURE EXPLAINS … WHAT DESIGN FEATURE WOULD YOU SAY MAKES SYDNEY COLISEUM THEATRE SUCH A MASTERPIECE?

The curvature and verticality of the building’s façade is an iconic structure that creates a visual impact against the surroundings and instils a grandeur impression when viewed from all angles. The façade panels are made up of precast concrete with materials sourced locally which create a building shape that is very unique and yet respond to the characteristics of the site and showcase the flair of the arts and culture that is held within. The auditorium is designed to offer a flexibility in function, from Orchestra to a rock concert or a sitting banquet. Each function requires a different setting and this auditorium has acoustic banners, roller blinds and retractable seating to specifically cater for each of them, without compromising the quality and comfort of the end user. This is a unique feature that has not been repeated anywhere in the nation.

With these key design features, Sydney Coliseum Theatre is a masterpiece for the Western Sydney, if not the entire country. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN OF THE BUILDING?

The design of the building is inspired by the freedom of expression in arts and music with the fluidity in its form, curving the façade to create intimate spaces and nooks, and the playfulness of revealing glimpses of the inside and outside through the slithers of windows. The grand staircase becomes the spine of the building connecting layers of activities and the popout windows allows visual connection between the outside public areas and the inside private areas. The multi-purpose auditorium allows the flexibility for a variety of events and shows. The curves of the timber battens embrace the audience and allows them to immerse in the entertainment of the night.
